We consider a statistical mechanical model of a generic flexible polyelectrolyte, comprised of identically charged monomers with long-range electrostatic interactions and short-range interactions quantified by a disorder field along the polymer contour sequence, which is randomly quenched. The free energy and the monomer density profile of the system for no electrolyte screening are calculated in the case of a system composed of two infinite planar bounding surfaces with an intervening oppositely charged polyelectrolyte chain. We show that the effect of the contour sequence disorder, mediated by short-range interactions, leads to an enhanced localization of the polyelectrolyte chain and a first order phase transition at a critical value of the inter-surface spacing. This phase transition results in an abrupt change of the pressure from negative to positive values, effectively eliminating polyelectrolyte mediated bridging attraction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Working at the macroscopic continuum level, we investigate effective van der Waals interactions between two layers within a multilayer assembly. By comparing the pair interactions between two layers with effective pair interactions within an assembly we assess the significant consequences of nonadditivity of van der Waals interactions. This allows us to evaluate the best numerical estimate to date for the Hamaker coefficient of van der Waals interactions in lipid-water multilamellar systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Working at the Lifshitz level, we investigate the van der Waals interactions across a series of layers with a periodic motif. We derive the complete form of the van der Waals interaction as an explicit function of the number of periodic layers. We then compare our result with an approximation based on an anisotropic-continuum representation of the stratified medium. A variational approach, based on a quadratic trial Hamiltonian is used to determine the configurational as well as the mechanical properties of a system composed of two point charges plus a neutralizing charged polymer, considered as a model of polyelectrolyte–macroion interactions. The quadratic variational ansatz used in the context of charged polymers presents a variant of the Feynman–Kleinert approach properly generalized to include polymer self-interactions. Conditions for chain localization in the field of a point charge are derived and its consequences for polymer-mediated forces between two point charges are analyzed. It is established that in three dimensions the polymer can confer long range attraction to nominally equally charged point ions. At small separations, the polymer mediated force is elastic in origin, stemming from the soft electrostatic anchoring of the chain to both point charges, but with a force constant much stronger than expected from entropic elasticity alone. At large separations, the polymer mediated interactions are of long range and are due to polymer-induced charge reversal on one of the external point charges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the pseudo-Casimir force acting between two charged surfaces confining a single polyelectrolyte chain with opposite charge. We expand the exact free energy to the second order in the local electrostatic field as well as the replicated polymer density field around the mean-field (saddle-point) solution. The quadratic terms lead to a fluctuation interaction that is partly due to the (thermal) Casimir effect for the confined electrostatic field and partly due to the pseudo-Casimir effect due to the confined replicated polymer density field. We study the intersurface separation dependence of both effects and show that the pseudo-Casimir effect leads to a long range attraction between the surfaces that decays with an anomalous algebraic exponent of ∼1.7, smaller than the standard exponent of 2 in the case of Casimir interactions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. A complete form of the van der Waals dispersion interaction between an infinitely long anisotropic semiconducting/insulating thin cylinder and an anisotropic half space is derived for all separations between the cylinder and the half space. The derivation proceeds from the theory of dispersion interactions between two anisotropic infinite half spaces as formulated in Phys. Rev. A 71, 042102 (2005). The approach is valid in the retarded as well as nonretarded regimes of the interaction and is coupled with the recently evaluated ab initio dielectric response functions of various semiconducting/insulating single wall carbon nanotubes, enables the authors to evaluate the strength of the van der Waals dispersion interaction for all orientation angles and separations between a thin cylindrical nanotube and the half space. We present a derivation of the screening length for a solution containing a charge-regulated macroion, e.g. protein, with its counterions. We show that it can be obtained directly from the second derivatives of the total free energy by taking recourse to the "uncertainty relation" of the Legendre transform, which connects the Hessians or the local curvatures of the free energy as a function of density and its Legendre transform, i.e., osmotic pressure, as a function of chemical potentials. Based on the Fowler-Guggenheim-Frumkin model of charge regulation, we then analyze the "screening resonance" and the "overscreening" of the screening properties of the charge-regulated macroion solution., (© 2024 Author(s). By using a recently formulated Legendre transform approach to the thermodynamics of charged systems, we explore the general form of the screening length in the Voorn-Overbeek-type theories, which remains valid also in the cases where the entropy of the charged component(s) is not given by the ideal gas form as in the Debye-Hückel theory. The screening length consistent with the non-electrostatic terms in the free energy ansatz for the Flory-Huggins and Voorn-Overbeek type theories, derived from the local curvature properties of the Legendre transform, has distinctly different behavior than the often invoked standard Debye screening length, though it reduces to it in some special cases.

We develop a model of interacting zwitterionic membranes with rotating surface dipoles immersed in a monovalent salt and implement it in a field theoretic formalism. In the mean-field regime of monovalent salt, the electrostatic forces between the membranes are characterized by a non-uniform trend: at large membrane separations, the interfacial dipoles on the opposing sides behave as like-charge cations and give rise to repulsive membrane interactions; at short membrane separations, the anionic field induced by the dipolar phosphate groups sets the behavior in the intermembrane region. The attraction of the cationic nitrogens in the dipolar lipid headgroups leads to the adhesion of the membrane surfaces via dipolar bridging. The underlying competition between the opposing field components of the individual dipolar charges leads to the non-uniform salt ion affinity of the zwitterionic membrane with respect to the separation distance; large inter-membrane separations imply anionic excess, while small nanometer-sized separations favor cationic excess. This complex ionic selectivity of zwitterionic membranes may have relevant repercussions on nanofiltration and nanofluidic transport techniques.

Orientational ordering driven by mechanical distortion of soft substrates plays a major role in material transformation processes such as elastocapillarity and surface anchoring. We present a theoretical model of the orientational response of anisotropic rods deposited onto a surface of a soft, elastic substrate of finite thickness. We show that anisotropic rods exhibit a continuous isotropic-nematic phase transition, driven by orientational interactions between surface deposited rods. This interaction is mediated by the deformation of the underlying elastic substrate and is quantified by the Boussinesq solution adapted to the case of slender, surface deposited rods. From the microscopic rod-rod interactions, we derive the appropriate Maier-Saupe mean-field description, which includes the Boussinesq elastic free energy contribution due to the substrate elasticity, derive the conditions for the existence of a continuous orientational ordering transition, and discuss the implication of results in the soft (bio)system context.

Based on a collective description of electrolytes composed of charge-regulated macro-ions and simple salt ions, we analyze their equilibrium charge state in the bulk and their behavior in the vicinity of an external electrified surface. The mean-field formulation of mobile macro-ions in an electrolyte bathing solution is extended to include interactions between association and dissociation sites. We demonstrate that above a critical concentration of salt, similar to the critical micelle concentration, a non-trivial distribution of charge states sets in. Such a charge state can eventually lead to a liquid-liquid phase separation based on charge regulation.

We probe the electrostatic mechanism driving adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto like-charged membranes upon the addition of tri- and tetravalent counterions to a bathing monovalent salt solution. We develop a one-loop-dressed strong coupling theory that treats the monovalent salt at the electrostatic one-loop level and the multivalent counterions within a strong-coupling approach. It is shown that the adhesive force of the multivalent counterions mediating the like-charge adsorption arises from their strong condensation at the charged membrane. The resulting interfacial counterion excess locally maximizes the screening ability of the electrolyte and minimizes the electrostatic polymer grand potential. This translates into an attractive force that pulls the polymer to the similarly charged membrane. We show that the high counterion valency enables this adsorption transition even at weakly charged membranes. Additionally, strongly charged membranes give rise to monovalent counterion-induced correlations and intensify the interfacial multivalent counterion condensation, strengthening the complexation of the polymer with the like-charged membrane, as well as triggering the orientational transition of the molecule prior to its adsorption. Finally, our theory provides two additional key features as evidenced by previous adsorption experiments: first, the critical counterion concentration for polymer adsorption decreases with the rise of the counterion valency and, second, the addition of monovalent salt enhances the screening of the membrane charges and suppresses monovalent counterion correlations close to the surface. This weakens the interfacial multivalent counterion condensation and results in the desorption of the polymer from the substrate.

Charge regulation is an important aspect of electrostatics in biological and colloidal systems, where the charges are generally not fixed but depend on the environmental variables. Here, we analyze the charge regulation mechanism in patchy inhomogeneously charged spherical particles, such as globular proteins, colloids, or viruses. Together with the multipole expansion of inhomogeneously charged spherical surfaces, the charge regulation mechanism on the level of linear approximation is shown to lead to a mixing between different multipole moments depending on their capacitance-the response function of the charge distribution with respect to the electrostatic potential. This presents an additional anomalous feature of molecular electrostatics in the presence of ionic screening. We demonstrate the influence of charge regulation on several examples of inhomogeneously charged spherical particles, showing that it leads to significant changes in their multipole moments.

We study the spatial and orientational distribution of charged nanorods (rodlike counterions) as well as the effective interaction mediated by them between two plane-parallel surfaces that carry fixed (quenched) heterogeneous charge distributions. The nanorods are assumed to have an internal charge distribution, specified by a multivalent monopolar moment and a finite quadrupolar moment, and the quenched surface charge is assumed to be randomly distributed with equal mean and variance on the two surfaces. While equally charged surfaces are known to repel within the traditional mean-field theories, the presence of multivalent counterions has been shown to cause attractive interactions between uniformly charged surfaces due to the prevalence of strong electrostatic couplings that grow rapidly with the counterion valency. We show that the combined effects due to electrostatic correlations (caused by the coupling between the mean surface field and the multivalent, monopolar, charge valency of counterions) as well as the disorder-induced interactions (caused by the coupling between the surface disorder field and the quadrupolar moment of counterions) lead to much stronger attractive interactions between two randomly charged surfaces. The interaction profile turns out to be a nonmonotonic function of the intersurface separation, displaying an attractive minimum at relatively small separations, where the ensuing attraction can exceed the maximum strong-coupling attraction (produced by multivalent monopolar counterions between uniformly charged surfaces) by more than an order of magnitude.

A generalization of the mean-field approach will be derived that will take into account the ion-ion as well as ion-surface non-electrostatic effects on an equal footing, being based on the bulk and surface equations of state in the absence of electrostatic interactions. This approach will be applied to the analysis of a single planar surface with dissociable sites with several models of the specific ion-surface non-electrostatic interactions, providing a general thermodynamic insight into the characteristics of the surface differential capacitance. The ion-surface interactions and ion-ion packing considerations at the surface will be shown to be more relevant than the bulk packing constraints for ions vicinal to the surface, as well as to set in prior to the conditions where the bulk packing constraints would become relevant.

We analyse van der Waals interactions between a pair of dielectrically anisotropic plane-layered media interacting across a dielectrically isotropic solvent medium. We develop a general formalism based on transfer matrices to investigate the van der Waals torque and force in the limit of weak birefringence and dielectric matching between the ordinary axes of the anisotropic layers and the solvent. We apply this formalism to study the following systems: (i) a pair of single anisotropic layers, (ii) a single anisotropic layer interacting with a multilayered slab consisting of alternating anisotropic and isotropic layers, and (iii) a pair of multilayered slabs each consisting of alternating anisotropic and isotropic layers, looking at the cases where the optic axes lie parallel and/or perpendicular to the plane of the layers. For the first case, the optic axes of the oppositely facing anisotropic layers of the two interacting slabs generally possess an angular mismatch, and within each multilayered slab the optic axes may either be the same or undergo constant angular increments across the anisotropic layers. In particular, we examine how the behaviors of the van der Waals torque and force can be "tuned" by adjusting the layer thicknesses, the relative angular increment within each slab, and the angular mismatch between the slabs.

We present a theoretical description of the effect of polyvalent ions on the interaction between titratable macroions. The model system consists of two point-like macroions with dissociable sites, immersed in an asymmetric ionic mixture of monovalent and polyvalent salts. We formulate a dressed ion strong coupling theory, based on the decomposition of the asymmetric ionic mixture into a weakly electrostatically coupled monovalent salt and into polyvalent ions that are strongly electrostatically coupled to the titratable macro-ions. The charge of the macroions is not considered as fixed, but is allowed to respond to local bathing solution parameters (electrostatic potential, pH of the solution, and salt concentration) through a simple charge regulation model. The approach presented, yielding an effective polyvalent-ion mediated interaction between charge-regulated macroions at various solution conditions, describes the strong coupling equivalent of the Kirkwood-Schumaker interaction.

We investigate the effective interaction between two randomly charged but otherwise net-neutral, planar dielectric slabs immersed in an asymmetric Coulomb fluid containing a mixture of mobile monovalent and multivalent ions. The presence of charge disorder on the apposed bounding surfaces of the slabs leads to substantial qualitative changes in the way they interact, as compared with the standard picture provided by the van der Waals and image-induced, ion-depletion interactions. While, the latter predict purely attractive interactions between strictly neutral slabs, we show that the combined effects from surface charge disorder, image depletion, Debye (or salt) screening, and also, in particular, their coupling with multivalent ions, give rise to a more diverse behavior for the effective interaction between net-neutral slabs at nano-scale separations. Disorder effects show large variation depending on the properly quantified strength of disorder, leading either to non-monotonic effective interaction with both repulsive and attractive branches when the surface charges are weakly disordered (small disorder variance) or to a dominating attractive interaction that is larger both in its range and magnitude than what is predicted from the van der Waals and image-induced, ion-depletion interactions, when the surfaces are strongly disordered (large disorder variance).

We present and analyze correlation functions of a main-chain polymer nematic in a continuum worm-like chain description for two types of constraints formalized by the tensorial and vectorial conservation laws, both originating in the microscopic chain integrity, i.e., the connectivity of the polymer chains. In particular, our aim is to identify the features of the correlation functions that are most susceptible to the differences between the two constraints. Besides the density and director autocorrelations in both the tensorial and vectorial cases, we calculate also the density-director correlation functions, the latter being a direct signature of the presence of a specific constraint. Its amplitude is connected to the strength of the constraint and is zero if none of the constraints are present, i.e., for a standard non-polymeric nematic. Generally, the correlation functions with the constraints differ substantially from the correlation functions in the non-polymeric case, if the constraints are strong which in practice requires long chains. Moreover, for the tensorial conservation law to be well distinguishable from the vectorial one, the chain persistence length should be much smaller than the total length of the chain, so that hairpins (chain backfolding) are numerous and the polar order is small.

We analyze a model statistical description of the polypeptide chain helix-coil transition, where we take into account the specificity of its primary sequence, as quantified by the phase space volume ratio of the number of all accessible states to the number corresponding to a helical conformation. The resulting transition phase diagram is then juxtaposed with the unusual behavior of the secondary structures in Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDPs) and a number of similarities are observed, even if the protein folding is a more complex transition than the helix-coil transition. In fact, the deficit in bulky and hydrophobic amino acids observed in IDPs, translated into larger values of phase space volume, allows us to locate the region in parameter space of the helix-coil transition that would correspond to the secondary structure transformations that are intrinsic to conformational transitions in IDPs and that is characterized by a modified phase diagram when compared to globular proteins. Here, we argue how the nature of this modified phase diagram, obtained from a model of the helix-coil transition in a solvent, would illuminate the turned-out response of IDPs to the changes in the environment conditions that follow straightforwardly from the re-entrant (cold denaturation) branch in their folding phase diagram.

We analyze van der Waals interactions between two rigid polymers with sequence-specific, anisotropic polarizabilities along the polymer backbones, so that the dipole moments fluctuate parallel to the polymer backbones. Assuming that each polymer has a quenched-in polarizability sequence which reflects, for example, the polynucleotide sequence of a double-stranded DNA molecule, we study the van der Waals interaction energy between a pair of such polymers with rod-like structure for the cases where their respective polarizability sequences are (i) distinct and (ii) identical, with both zero and non-zero correlation length of the polarizability correlator along the polymer backbones in the latter case. For identical polymers, we find a novel r(-5) scaling behavior of the van der Waals interaction energy for small inter-polymer separation r, in contradistinction to the r(-4) scaling behavior of distinct polymers, with furthermore a pronounced angular dependence favoring attraction between sufficiently aligned identical polymers. Such behavior can assist the molecular recognition between polymers.

We study the surface tension of ionic solutions at air/water and oil/water interfaces by using field-theoretical methods and including a finite proximal surface-region with ionic-specific interactions. The free energy is expanded to first-order in a loop expansion beyond the mean-field result. We calculate the excess surface tension and obtain analytical predictions that reunite the Onsager-Samaras pioneering result (which does not agree with experimental data), with the ionic specificity of the Hofmeister series. We derive analytically the surface-tension dependence on the ionic strength, ionic size, and ion-surface interaction, and show consequently that the Onsager-Samaras result is consistent with the one-loop correction beyond the mean-field result. Our theory fits well a wide range of salt concentrations for different monovalent ions using one fit parameter per electrolyte and reproduces the reverse Hofmeister series for anions at the air/water and oil/water interfaces.

We study the distribution of multivalent counterions next to a dielectric slab, bearing a quenched, random distribution of charges on one of its solution interfaces, with a given mean and variance, both in the absence and in the presence of a bathing monovalent salt solution. We use the previously derived approach based on the dressed multivalent-ion theory that combines aspects of the strong and weak coupling of multivalent and monovalent ions in a single framework. The presence of quenched charge disorder on the charged surface of the dielectric slab is shown to substantially increase the density of multivalent counterions in its vicinity. In the counterion-only model (with no monovalent salt ions), the surface disorder generates an additional logarithmic attraction potential and thus an algebraically singular counterion density profile at the surface. This behavior persists also in the presence of a monovalent salt bath and results in significant violation of the contact-value theorem, reflecting the anti-fragility effects of the disorder that drive the system towards a more "ordered" state. In the presence of an interfacial dielectric discontinuity, depleting the counterion layer at the surface, the charge disorder still generates a much enhanced counterion density further away from the surface. Likewise, the charge inversion and/or overcharging of the surface occur more strongly and at smaller bulk concentrations of multivalent counterions when the surface carries quenched charge disorder. Overall, the presence of quenched surface charge disorder leads to sizable effects in the distribution of multivalent counterions in a wide range of realistic parameters and typically within a distance of a few nanometers from the charged surface.

The competition between toroidal and rod-like conformations as possible ground states for DNA condensation is studied as a function of the stiffness, the length of the DNA, and the form of the long-range interactions between neighboring molecules, using analytical theory supported by Monte Carlo simulations. Both conformations considered are characterized by a local nematic order with hexagonal packing symmetry of neighboring DNA molecules, but differ in global configuration of the chain and the distribution of its curvature as it wraps around to form a condensate. The long-range interactions driving the DNA condensation are assumed to be of the form pertaining to the attractive depletion potential as well as the attractive counterion induced soft potential. In the stiffness-length plane we find a transition between rod-like to toroid condensate for increasing stiffness at a fixed chain length L. Strikingly, the transition line is found to have a L(1/3) dependence irrespective of the details of the long-range interactions between neighboring molecules. When realistic DNA parameters are used, our description reproduces rather well some of the experimental features observed in DNA condensates.

We present a personal view on the current state of statistical mechanics of Coulomb fluids with special emphasis on the interactions between macromolecular surfaces, concentrating on the weak and the strong coupling limits. Both are introduced for a (primitive) counterion-only system in the presence of macroscopic, uniformly charged boundaries, where they can be derived systematically. Later we show how this formalism can be generalized to the cases with additional characteristic length scales that introduce new coupling parameters into the problem. These cases most notably include asymmetric ionic mixtures with mono- and multivalent ions that couple differently to charged surfaces, ions with internal charge (multipolar) structure and finite static polarizability, where weak and strong coupling limits can be constructed by analogy with the counterion-only case and lead to important new insights into their properties that cannot be derived by any other means.

Electrostatic properties and stability of charged virus-like nano-shells are examined in ionic solutions with monovalent and multivalent ions. A theoretical model based on a thin charged spherical shell and multivalent ions within the "dressed multivalent ion" approximation, yielding their distribution across the shell and the corresponding electrostatic (osmotic) pressure acting on the shell, is compared with extensive implicit Monte-Carlo simulations. It is found to be accurate for positive or low negative surface charge densities of the shell and for sufficiently high (low) monovalent (multivalent) salt concentrations. Phase diagrams involving electrostatic pressure exhibit positive and negative values, corresponding to an outward and an inward facing force on the shell, respectively. This provides an explanation for the high sensitivity of viral shell stability and self-assembly of viral capsid shells on the ionic environment.

Inhomogeneous charge distributions have important repercussions on electrostatic interactions in systems of charged particles but are often difficult to examine theoretically. We investigate how electrostatic interactions are influenced by patchy charge distributions exhibiting certain point group symmetries. We derive a general form of the electrostatic interaction energy of two permeable, arbitrarily charged spherical shells in the Debye-Hückel approximation and apply it to the case of particles with icosahedral, octahedral, and tetrahedral inhomogeneous charge distributions. We analyze in detail how charge distribution symmetry modifies the interaction energy and find that local charge inhomogeneities reduce the repulsion of two overall equally charged particles, while sufficient orientational variation in the charge distribution can turn the minimum interaction energy into an attraction. Additionally, we show that larger patches and thus lower symmetries and wave numbers result in bigger attraction given the same variation.

We study the interaction between two neutral plane-parallel dielectric bodies in the presence of a highly asymmetric ionic fluid, containing multivalent as well as monovalent (salt) ions. Image charge interactions, due to dielectric discontinuities at the boundaries, as well as effects from ion confinement in the slit region between the surfaces are taken fully into account, leading to image-generated depletion attraction, ion correlation attraction, and steric-like repulsive interactions. We investigate these effects by employing a combination of Monte Carlo simulation methods, including explicit-ion simulations (where all electrostatic interactions are simulated explicitly) and implicit-ion simulations (where monovalent ions are replaced by an effective screened electrostatic potential between multivalent ions), as well as an approximate analytical theory. The latter incorporates strong ion-image charge correlations, which develop in the presence of high valency ions in the mixture. We show that the implicit-ion simulations and the proposed analytical theory can describe the explicit simulation results on a qualitative level, while excellent quantitative agreement can be obtained for sufficiently large monovalent salt concentrations. The resultant attractive interaction between the neutral surfaces is shown to be significant, as compared with the usual van der Waals interactions between semi-infinite dielectrics, and can thus play an important role at the nano scale.

We investigate the statistical mechanics of an inhomogeneous Coulomb fluid composed of charged particles with static polarizability. We derive the weak- and the strong-coupling approximations and evaluate the partition function in a planar dielectric slab geometry with charged boundaries. We investigate the density profiles and the disjoining pressure for both approximations. Comparison to the case of non-polarizable counterions shows that polarizability brings important differences in the counterion density distribution as well as the counterion mediated electrostatic interactions between charged dielectric interfaces.

The wrapping equilibria of one and two adsorbing cylinders are studied along a semi-flexible filament (polymer) due to the interplay between elastic rigidity and short-range adhesive energy between the cylinder and the filament. We show that statistical mechanics of the system can be solved exactly using a path integral formalism which gives access to the full effect of thermal fluctuations, going thus beyond the usual Gaussian approximations which take into account only the contributions from the minimal energy configuration and small fluctuations about this minimal energy solution. We obtain the free energy of the wrapping-unwrapping transition of the filament around the cylinders as well as the effective interaction between two wrapped cylinders due to thermal fluctuations of the elastic filament. A change of entropy due to wrapping of the filament around the adsorbing cylinders as they move closer together is identified as an additional source of interactions between them. Such entropic wrapping effects should be distinguished from the usual entropic configuration effects in semi-flexible polymers. Our results may be relevant to the problem of adsorption of oriented nano-rods on semi-flexible polymers.

Randomly charged net-neutral dielectric slabs are shown to interact across a featureless dielectric continuum with long-range electrostatic forces that scale with the statistical variance of their quenched random charge distribution and inversely with the distance between their bounding surfaces. By accounting for the whole spectrum of electromagnetic field fluctuations, we show that this long-range disorder-generated interaction extends well into the retarded regime where higher order (non-zero) Matsubara frequencies contribute significantly. This occurs even for highly clean samples with only a trace amount of charge disorder and shows that disorder effects can be important down to the nanoscale. As a result, the previously predicted non-monotonic behavior for the total force between dissimilar slabs as a function of their separation distance is substantially modified by higher order contributions, and in almost all cases of interest, we find that the equilibrium inter-surface separation is shifted to substantially larger values compared to predictions based solely on the zero-frequency component. This suggests that the ensuing non-monotonic interaction is more easily amenable to experimental detection. The presence of charge disorder in the intervening dielectric medium between the two slabs is shown to lead to an additional force that can be repulsive or attractive depending on the system parameters and can, for instance, wash out the non-monotonic behavior of the total force when the intervening slab contains a sufficiently large amount of disorder charges.

The one-dimensional Coulomb lattice fluid in a capacitor configuration is studied. The model is formally exactly soluble via a transfer operator method within a field theoretic representation of the model. The only interactions present in the model are the one-dimensional Coulomb interaction between cations and anions and the steric interaction imposed by restricting the maximal occupancy at any lattice site to one particle. Despite the simplicity of the model, a wide range of intriguing physical phenomena arise, some of which are strongly reminiscent of those seen in experiments and numerical simulations of three-dimensional ionic liquid based capacitors. Notably, we find regimes where over-screening and density oscillations are seen near the capacitor plates. The capacitance is also shown to exhibit strong oscillations as a function of applied voltage. It is also shown that the corresponding mean-field theory misses most of these effects. The analytical results are confirmed by extensive numerical simulations.

We study the effect of dielectric anisotropy of polymers on their equilibrium ordering within mean-field theory, but with a formalism that takes into account the full n-body nature of van der Waals (vdW) forces. Dielectric anisotropy within polymers is to be expected as the electronic properties of the polymer will typically be different along the polymer than across its cross section. It is therefore physically intuitive that larger charge fluctuations can be induced along the chain than perpendicular to it. We show that this dielectric anisotropy leads to n-body interactions which can induce an isotropic-nematic transition. The two body and three body components of the full vdW interaction are extracted and it is shown how the two body term behaves like the phenomenological self-aligning-pairwise nematic interaction. At the three body interaction level we see that the nematic phase that is energetically favorable is discotic, however, on the full n-body interaction level we find that the normal axial nematic phase is always the stable ordered phase. The n-body nature of our approach also shows that the key parameter driving the nematic-isotropic transition is the bare persistence length of the polymer chain.

Many theoretical studies were devoted in the past to ion-specific effects trying to interpret a large body of experimental evidence, such as surface tension at air/water interfaces and force measurements between charged objects. Although several mechanisms were suggested to explain the results, such as dispersion forces and specific surface-ion interactions, we would like to suggest another source of ion-specificity originating from the local variations of the dielectric constant due to the presence of ions in the solution. We present a mean-field model to account for the heterogeneity of the dielectric constant caused by the ions. In particular, for ions that decrease the dielectric constant we find a depletion of ions from the vicinity of charged surfaces. For a two-plate system, the same effect leads to an increase of the pressure in between two surfaces. Our results suggest that the effect of ions on the local dielectric constant should be taken into account when interpreting experiments that address ion-specific effects.

We investigate the effect of monopolar charge disorder on the classical fluctuation-induced interactions between randomly charged net-neutral dielectric slabs and discuss various generalizations of recent results [A. Naji et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 060601 (2010)] to highly inhomogeneous dielectric systems with and without statistical disorder correlations. We shall focus on the specific case of two generally dissimilar plane-parallel slabs, which interact across vacuum or an arbitrary intervening dielectric medium. Monopolar charge disorder is considered to be present on the bounding surfaces and/or in the bulk of the slabs, may be in general quenched or annealed and may possess a finite lateral correlation length reflecting possible "patchiness" of the random charge distribution. In the case of quenched disorder, the bulk disorder is shown to give rise to an additive long-range contribution to the total force, which decays as the inverse distance between the slabs and may be attractive or repulsive depending on the dielectric constants of the slabs. By contrast, the force induced by annealed disorder in general combines with the underlying van der Waals forces in a nonadditive fashion, and the net force decays as an inverse cube law at large separations. We show, however, that in the case of two dissimilar slabs, the net effect due to the interplay between the disorder-induced and the pure van der Waals interactions can lead to a variety of unusual nonmonotonic interaction profiles between the dielectric slabs. In particular, when the intervening medium has a larger dielectric constant than the two slabs, we find that the net interaction can become repulsive and exhibit a potential barrier, while the underlying van der Waals force is attractive. On the contrary, when the intervening medium has a dielectric constant between that of the two slabs, the net interaction can become attractive and exhibit a free energy minimum, while the pure van der Waals force is repulsive. Therefore, the charge disorder, if present, can drastically alter the effective interaction between net-neutral objects.

We examine the effective counterion-mediated electrostatic interaction between two like-charged dielectric cylinders immersed in a continuous dielectric medium containing neutralizing mobile counterions. We focus on the effects of image charges induced as a result of the dielectric mismatch between the cylindrical cores and the surrounding dielectric medium and investigate the counterion-mediated electrostatic interaction between the cylinders in both limits of weak and strong electrostatic couplings (corresponding, e.g., to systems with monovalent and multivalent counterions, respectively). The results are compared with extensive Monte Carlo simulations exhibiting good agreement with the limiting weak and strong coupling results in their respective regime of validity.

We reformulate the theory of strong electrostatic coupling in order to describe an asymmetric electrolyte solution of monovalent salt ions and polyvalent counterions using field-theoretical techniques and Monte Carlo simulations. The theory is based on an asymmetric treatment of the different components of the electrolyte solution. The weak coupling Debye-Hückel approach is used in order to describe the monovalent salt ions while a strong coupling approach is used to tackle the polyvalent counterions. This combined weak-strong coupling approach effectively leads to dressed interactions between polyvalent counterions and thus directly affects the correlation attraction mediated by polyvalent counterions between like-charged objects. The general theory is specifically applied to a system composed of two uniformly charged plane-parallel surfaces in the presence of salt and polyvalent counterions. In the strong coupling limit for polyvalent counterions, the comparison with Monte Carlo simulations shows good agreement for large enough values of the electrostatic coupling parameter. We delineate two limiting laws that in fact encompass all the Monte Carlo data.

We evaluate exactly the statistical integral for an inhomogeneous one-dimensional (1D) counterion-only Coulomb gas between two charged boundaries and from this compute the effective interaction, or disjoining pressure, between the bounding surfaces. Our exact results are compared to the limiting cases of weak and strong couplings which are the same for 1D and three-dimensional (3D) systems. For systems with a large number of counterions it is found that the weak-coupling (mean-field) approximation for the disjoining pressure works perfectly and that fluctuations around the mean-field in 1D are much smaller than in 3D. In the case of few counterions it works less well and strong-coupling approximation performs much better as it takes into account properly the discreteness of the counterion charges.

Recognition of spatially varying optical properties is a necessity when studying the van der Waals-London dispersion (vdW-Ld) interactions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that have surfactant coatings, tubes within tubes, andor substantial core sizes. The ideal way to address these radially dependent optical properties would be to have an analytical add-a-layer solution in cylindrical coordinates similar to the one readily available for the plane-plane geometry. However, such a formulation does not exist nor does it appear trivial to be obtained exactly. The best and most pragmatic alternative for end-users is to take the optical spectra of the many components and to use a spectral mixing formulation so as to create effective solid-cylinder spectra for use in the far-limit regime. The near-limit regime at "contact" is dominated by the optical properties of the outermost layer, and thus no spectral mixing is required. Specifically we use a combination of a parallel capacitor in the axial direction and the Bruggeman effective medium in the radial direction. We then analyze the impact of using this mixing formulation upon the effective vdW-Ld spectra and the resulting Hamaker coefficients for small and large diameter single walled CNTs (SWCNTs) in both the near- and far-limit regions. We also test the spectra of a [16,0,s+7,0,s] multiwalled CNT (MWCNT) with an effective MWCNT spectrum created by mixing its [16,0,s] and [7,0,s] SWCNT components to demonstrate nonlinear coupling effects that exist between neighboring layers. Although this paper is primarily on nanotubes, the strategies, implementation, and analysis presented are applicable and likely necessary to any system where one needs to resolve spatially varying optical properties in a particular Lifshitz formulation.

We propose a model for the liquid-liquid (L(alpha)-->L(alpha(') )) phase transition observed in osmotic pressure measurements of certain charged lamellae-forming amphiphiles. The model free energy combines mean-field electrostatic and phenomenological nonelectrostatic interactions, while the number of dissociated counterions is treated as a variable degree of freedom that is determined self-consistently. The model, therefore, joins two well-known theories: the Poisson-Boltzmann theory for ionic solutions between charged lamellae and the Langmuir-Frumkin-Davies adsorption isotherm modified to account for charged adsorbing species. Minimizing the appropriate free energy for each interlamellar spacing, we find the ionic density profiles and the resulting osmotic pressure. While in the simple Poisson-Boltzmann theory the osmotic pressure isotherms are always smooth, we observe a discontinuous liquid-liquid phase transition when the Poisson-Boltzmann theory is self-consistently augmented by the Langmuir-Frumkin-Davies adsorption. This phase transition depends on the area per amphiphilic head group, as well as on nonelectrostatic interactions of the counterions with the lamellae and interactions between counterion-bound and counterion-dissociated surfactants. Coupling the lateral phase transition in the bilayer plane with electrostatic interactions in the bulk, our results offer a qualitative explanation for the existence of the L(alpha)-->L(alpha(') ) phase transition of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDABr), but the transition's apparent absence for the chloride and the iodide homologs. More quantitative comparisons with experiment require better understanding of the microscopic basis of the phenomenological model parameters.

We investigate polyelectrolyte bridging interactions mediated by charged, flexible, polyelectrolyte chains between fixed cylindrical macroions of opposite charge in a two-dimensional hexagonal crystalline array. We show that in the asymptotic regime of small macroion density, the polyelectrolyte-mediated attraction is long range, falling off approximately linearly with the macroion array density. We investigate the polyelectrolyte free energy as a function of the macroion density and derive several analytic limiting laws valid in different regimes of the parameter space.

We formulate and evaluate the van der Waals part of the free energy due to a dielectric profile that varies continuously throughout the space between two interacting bodies. Not considering the work needed to create the inhomogeneous dielectric profile, focusing only on that part of the free energy affected by the inhomogeneity, we compare the ensuing interaction free energy with that of the original Lifshitz formulation with its step function changes at material boundaries and uniform dielectric medium. Rather than the monotonically varying attraction between like bodies given by the original formulation, the inhomogeneous continuous dielectric function leads to attractions as well as repulsions. The Lifshitz result emerges naturally in the limit of separations much larger than the thickness of the interfaces.
