We have used quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the structure, dynamics, and phase transitions of water interacting with superhydrophilic CuO surfaces that not only possess a strong affinity for water but also a "grass-like" topography that is rough on both micro- and nanoscales. Here, we report quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) measurements on two samples differing in water content at five temperatures below 280 K. The QENS spectra show water undergoing two different types of diffusive motion near the CuO surfaces: a "slow" translational diffusion occurring on a nanosecond time scale and a faster rotational motion. Further from the surfaces, there is "fast" translational diffusion comparable in rate to that of bulk supercooled water and the rotational motion occurring in the interfacial water. Analysis of the QENS spectra supports wetting of water to the CuO blades as seen in electron microscopy images. In addition, we observe an anomalous temperature dependence of the QENS spectra on cooling from 270 to 230 K with features consistent with a liquid–liquid phase transition. We suggest that the solvent-like properties of the coexisting bulk-like water in our CuO samples are a significant factor in determining the temperature dependence of the interfacial water's dynamics. Our results are compared with those obtained from two well-studied substrate classes: (1) silicas that contain ordered cylindrical nanopores but have weaker hydrophilicity and (2) nanoparticles of other transition-metal oxides, such as TiO2, which share the strong hydrophilicity of our samples but lack their porosity. Room-temperature ionic liquids are promising candidates for applications ranging from electrolytes for energy storage devices to lubricants for food and cellulose processing to compounds for pharmaceutics, biotransformation, and biopreservation. Due to the ion complexity, many room-temperature ionic liquids readily form amorphous phases upon cooling, even at modest rates. Here, we investigate two commonly studied imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, as well as their mixtures, to demonstrate how the complex interplay between the crystalline and amorphous phases is affected by the processing conditions, such as thermal history, liquid mixing, and applied pressure. We show that quantum tunneling in the cation methyl groups, measured by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering, can be used to probe the order-disorder in room-temperature ionic liquids (crystalline vs amorphous state) that develops as a result of variable processing conditions. Dynamics of water, especially in the temperature range of the 'no man's land', remain a mystery. We present detailed study of dynamics in aqueous LiCl solution that is often considered as a model for bulk water. We employ broadband dielectric and light scattering spectroscopy in a broad frequency and temperature range. Our analysis reveals no sign of the fragile-to-strong crossover (FSC) neither in structural relaxation nor in translational motions. Our experimental results combined with a large selection of literature data lead to the clear conclusion-there is no FSC in dynamics of aqueous solutions at T ∼ 200-230 K. Instead, our analysis reveals appearance of the so-called excess wing at the high frequency tail of the structural relaxation peak. The diffusive dynamics of hydration water in lysozyme is studied byhigh-resolution incoherent quasielastic neutron scatteringspectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in a temperature range of 290 K≤T≤380 K. The hydration level of the protein powder sample is kept at h=0.35 gram of water per gram of dry protein to provide monolayer of water coverage on the protein surfaces. Two lysozyme samples, the H2O hydrated and the D2O hydrated, are measured in the experiments. The difference spectra of the two are used to extract the diffusive dynamics of the hydration water. The self-diffusion constant D of the hydration water is obtained from the analyses of the low-Q spectra. The Arrhenius plot of the inverse diffusion constant [i.e., log(1/D) versus 1/T] shows a dynamic crossover from a super-Arrhenius behavior at low temperatures to an Arrhenius behavior at high temperatures bordered at TD=345±5 K. We also observe a pronounced increase in the migration distance d of the hydration water molecules above TD. We present evidence from the neutron scattering experiment that this dynamic crossover temperature in the hydration water coincides with that of the reversible denaturation of lysozyme determined by specific heat measurements. We further performed MD simulations of hydrated lysozyme powder to offer a plausible reason for this coincidence of the crossover phenomenon with the reversible denaturation of the protein. Relaxor ferroelectrics exhibit frequency-dispersion of their dielectric permittivity peak as a function of temperature, the origin of which has been widely debated. Microscopic understanding of such behavior for polymeric ferroelectrics has presented new challenges since unlike traditional ceramic ferroelectrics, dielectric relaxation in polymers is a consequence of short-range molecular dynamics that are difficult to measure directly. Here, through careful analysis of atomic-level H-atom dynamics as determined by Quasi-elastic Neutron Scattering (QENS), we show that short-range molecular dynamics within crystalline domains cannot explain the macroscopic frequency-dispersion of dielectric properties observed in prototypical polyvinylidene-fluoride (PVDF)-based relaxor ferroelectrics. Instead, from multiscale quantitative microstructural characterization, a clear correlation between the amount of crystalline-amorphous interfaces and dielectric relaxation is observed, which indicates that such interfaces play a central role. These results provide critical insights into the role of atomic and microscopic structures towards relaxor behavior in ferroelectric polymers, which will be important for their future design. Transport of electrolytes in nanoporous carbon-based electrodes largely defines the function and performance of energy storage devices. Using molecular dynamics simulation and quasielastic neutron scattering, we investigate the microscopic dynamics of a prototypical ionic liquid electrolyte, [emim][Tf2N], under applied electric potential in carbon materials with 6.7 nm and 1.5 nm pores. The simulations demonstrate the formation of dense layers of counter-ions near the charged surfaces, which is reversible when the polarity is reversed. In the experiment, the ions immobilized near the surface manifest themselves in the elastic scattering signal. The experimentally observed ion immobilization near the wall is fully reversible as a function of the applied electric potential in the 6.7 nm, but not in the 1.5 nm nanopores. In the latter case, remarkably, the first application of the electric potential leads to apparently irreversible immobilization of cations or anions, depending on the polarity, near the carbon pore walls. This unexpectedly demonstrates that in carbon electrode materials with the small pores, which are optimal for energy storage applications, the polarity of the electrical potential applied for the first time after the introduction of an ionic liquid electrolyte may define the decoration of the small pore walls with ions for prolonged periods of time and possibly for the lifetime of the electrode.
