In an experiment performed on the Shenguang-III prototype laser facility, collective Thomson scattering (TS) is used to study the spatial growth of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a gas-filled Hohlraum by detecting the SBS-driven ion acoustic wave. High-quality time-resolved SBS and TS spectra are obtained simultaneously in the experiment, and these are analyzed by a steady-state code based on the ray-tracing model. The analysis indicates that ion–ion collisions may play an important role in suppressing SBS growth in the Au plasma; as a result, the SBS excited in the filled gas region is dominant. In the early phase of the laser pulse, SBS originates primarily from the high-density plasma at the edges of the interaction beam channel, which is piled up by the heating of the interaction beam. Throughout the duration of the laser pulse, the presence of the TS probe beam might mitigate SBS by perturbing the density distribution around the region overlapping with the interaction beam. Extrapolation of implosion performance between different laser energy scales is investigated for indirect drive through a semi-hydro-equivalent design. Since radiation transport is non-hydro-equivalent, the peak radiation temperature of the hohlraum and the ablation velocity of the capsule ablator are not scale-invariant when the sizes of the hohlraum and the capsule are scale-varied. A semi-hydro-equivalent design method that keeps the implosion velocity Vi, adiabat αF, and P L / R h c 2 (where PL is the laser power and Rhc is the hohlraum and capsule scale length) scale-invariant, is proposed to create hydrodynamically similar implosions. The semi-hydro-equivalent design and the scaled implosion performance are investigated for the 100 kJ Laser Facility (100 kJ-scale) and the National Ignition Facility (NIF-scale) with about 2 MJ laser energy. It is found that the one-dimensional implosion performance is approximately hydro-equivalent when Vi and αF are kept the same. Owing to the non-hydro-equivalent radiation transport, the yield-over-clean without α-particle heating (YOCnoα) is slightly lower at 100 kJ-scale than at NIF-scale for the same scaled radiation asymmetry or the same initial perturbation of the hydrodynamic instability. The overall scaled two-dimensional implosion performance is slightly lower at 100 kJ-scale. The general Lawson criterion factor scales as χ no α 2 D ∼ S 1.06 ± 0.04 (where S is the scale-variation factor) for the semi-hydro-equivalent implosion design with a moderate YOCnoα. Our study indicates that χnoα ≈ 0.379 is the minimum requirement for the 100 kJ-scale implosion to demonstrate the ability to achieve marginal ignition at NIF-scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flow pattern regime and unsteady characteristics of ventilated cavities with different headform shapes. The test model consists of a removable headform with three different forebodies (the conical, the blunt, and the hemispherical) and a common cylinder rear body. Experiments are conducted in a closed-loop cavitation tunnel. First, the flow pattern regimes on the ventilated cavity for different headforms are discussed in detail, and the dimensions of several flow patterns are measured. The results show that the cavity dimension and the regime are strongly dependent on the headform shape, and all typical flow patterns are introduced by schematic illustrations. Second, the ventilation hysteresis that happened during the flow pattern transition is pointed out. A quantitative gas leakage model is employed to explain the cause of hysteresis and flow pattern transition, and the results show the Strouhal number for different headforms is approximately ∼0.21. However, the blunt presented stronger gas leakage with a large constant parameter, K = 0.80. Finally, the unsteady characteristics of the ventilated cavity around different tested headforms are involved through descriptions of developments of the recirculating vortex and transparent cavity. In addition, an estimated cavitation number is applied to investigate the unsteady characteristics, and the maximum cavitation number and the strongest characteristic are obtained by the blunt headform due to the large drag coefficient and strong flow separation. The novel octahedral spherical hohlraum can provide an ideal and practical approach for the next generation of laser systems to support both direct and indirect drive to achieve predictable and reproducible fusion gain via multiple schemes. To demonstrate its advantage in a naturally high symmetry at a cylindrically configured laser facility, it requires to repoint the laser beams to approach as close as possible the ideal octahedral beam configuration with an injection angle (the angle between a beam and the normal direction of its laser entrance hole (LEH)) ranging from 50° to 60°. We report our investigation and experiment on the optimum repointing scheme at the SGIII facility, which uses 32 beams, with 8 beams entering each polar LEH at 49.5° and 55°, and 4 beams entering each equatorial LEH at 61.5° and 62.1°. It contains residual imbalance between the polar and equatorial beams, leading to an asymmetry dominated by the spherical harmonic Y20 mode, which can be remarkably reduced by the stronger backscatters of equatorial beams. Our experiment demonstrated the feasibility of the 32-beam optimum repointing scheme and generation of 175 eV under 86 kJ inside a 2.4-mm-radius octahedral hohlraum with 0.7-mm-radius LEHs, which provided a strong support for the later experiment on proof-of-concept of octahedral spherical hohlraum [Lan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 245001 (2021)]. 2D simulations on LEH closure agree well with the observations. A new mechanism for the generation of high intensity speckles by coupling of overlapping beams is discovered and studied in detail. Using three-dimensional simulations, the coupling of overlapping beams smoothed by phase plates and by polarization smoothing are investigated in the regime relevant to inertial confinement fusion studies. It is found that the intensity distribution of the laser beam spot can be changed by nonuniform spatial phase modulation, and the speckles formed by the phase plate can be split into smaller speckles with higher intensities, which is favorable for the generation of laser plasma instabilities. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is compared in simulations with and without coupling of the overlapping incident beams, and the results confirm the enhancement of stimulated Brillouin scattering due to this mechanism. The objective of this study was to investigate the coupled dynamics of a collapsing bubble and the motion of a nearby elastic plate at different initial distances. This was achieved using a combination of experimental and computational models. In the experiments, high-speed photography was used to record the temporal and spatial evolution of the collapse of a single bubble near an elastic boundary under normalized standoff distances γ ranging from 1.0 to 3.3. Digital image correlation was used to synchronously record the motion of the elastic plate. For the numerical simulations, taking the fluid compressibility and boundary motion into account, the immersed-boundary method was introduced to simulate the interaction between the elastic plate and bubble collapse. The results show that, with different initial distances, the dynamic behaviors of the bubble, including oscillation time, impact mode, and energy conversion, are different, and this is caused by the elastic rebound of the plate. In addition, the direction and amplitude of the deformation of the elastic plate are also influenced by the impact effects during bubble oscillation and rebound. The combined form of these impact behaviors changes with initial distance, and there are three typical impact patterns: the shock-wave effect, jet-effect, and hybrid shock-wave and jet-effect modes. In particular, when γ < 1.5, the jet effect and hybrid impact forms, which are dominated by the high-speed jet, can result in asymmetric deformation and cause greater local damage to the elastic plate. In inertial confinement fusion (ICF), overlapping of laser beams is common. Owing to the effective high laser intensity of the overlapped beams, the collective mode of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) with a shared scattered light wave is potentially important. In this work, an exact analytic solution for the convective gain coefficient of the collective SBS modes with shared scattered wave is presented for two overlapped beams based on a linear kinetic model. The effects of the crossing angle, polarization states, and finite beam overlapping volume of the two laser beams on the shared light modes are analyzed for cases with zero and nonzero wavelength difference between the two beams. It is found that all these factors have a significant influence on the shared light modes of SBS. Furthermore, the out-of-plane modes, in which the wavevectors of daughter waves lie in different planes from the two overlapped beams, are found to be important for certain polarization states and especially for obtuse crossing angles. In particular, adjusting the polarization directions of the two beams to be orthogonal to each other or tuning the wavelength difference to a sufficiently large value (of the order of nanometers) are found to be effective methods to suppress the shared light modes of SBS. The two-laser entrance hole (LEHs) spherical hohlraum energetic experiments with all 48 laser beams and two laser pulse shapes at the 100 kJ level laser facility were investigated. In this work, the time-resolved radiation temperature measured by multi-angle x-ray diodes agreed well with LARED simulations, and the peak radiation temperature was up to 260 eV with the laser power of 45 TW. Meanwhile, the backscattered laser energy fraction was less than 5% in the majority of shots, which proposed a low level of laser–plasma interaction (LPI) effect in the spherical hohlraum. However, in the shaped pulse shots with capsules, the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) of smaller incident angle lasers was significantly increased to 15%. The measured SRS spectrum and LARED simulations showed that the increase in the LPI effects caused by the ablated CH plasma was around 0.1Nc (Nc is the critical density). In summary, according to the experimental results, the x-ray conversion efficiency of the vacuum spherical hohlraum was 85%–88% in 3 ns square pulses and 89%–93% in 3.6 ns shaped pulses. In order to study the laser plasma instabilities (LPIs) in the context of some novel six-side laser-driven indirect designs like the six-cylinder-port hohlraum and the three-axis cylindrical hohlraum, where the laser beams inject in hohlraum with a large angle. LPI experiments in cylindrical hohlraum with only outer beams were designed and performed based on the current laser arrangement condition of SGIII laser facility for the first time. Stimulated Brillouin backscatter (SBS) was found to be the dominant instability with high instantaneous reflectivity in experiments. A typical feature was obtained in the time-resolved spectra of SBS, which maintained similar for different laser intensities of the interaction beam. The experimental data are analyzed by the hydrodynamic simulations combined with HLIP code, which is based on the ray-tracing model. By analysis of experimental data, it is argued that the mixture of gas and Au in the region of their interface is important to SBS, which indicates the need for the mixture model between the filled gas and the high Z plasma from hohlraum wall in the hydrodynamic simulations. Nonlinear saturation of SBS as well as the smoothed beam are also discussed here. The analog switching behavior of resistive random access memory (RRAM) is crucial for its application in neuromorphic computing. This paper investigates the switching mechanism of RRAM under sub-nanosecond and nanosecond pulse programming, with selected device materials and structures, using the kinetic Monte Carlo simulation method. The microscopic distribution of oxygen vacancies is simulated in all three spatial dimensions and in the time dimension (four-dimensional). According to the simulation results, thermal effects are a critical factor affecting the switching behavior. The thermal effects inside the HfOx switching layer can be almost completely eliminated by using sub-nanosecond pulses with low voltage, finally leading to good analog behavior. When nanosecond pulses are applied, effective heat insulation is the key to realizing analog characteristics. In general, the switching process is proposed to involve three stages. Having the lowest energy consumption, the first stage shows the greatest potential for achieving analog behavior. The use of heat-isolating structures, like capping layers and side wall materials with lower thermal conductance, could be a solution to improve the analog behavior of RRAM at the first stage when down-scaling the device size. A high voltage pulse generator is presented to drive Pockels cell. The Pockels cell behaves like a capacitor which slows the rise/fall time of the pulse and restrains the repetition rate of the generator. To drive the Pockels cell applied in quantum communication system, it requires about 1MHzrepetition rate with the rise/fall time of the pulse less than 50 ns, adjustable amplitude up to 800 V and an adjustable duration. With the assistance of self-designed transformers, the circuits is simplified that a pair of high current radio frequency (RF) MOSFET drivers are employed to switch the power MOSFETs at a high speed, and the power MOSFETs shape the final output pulse with the requirements. From the tests, the generator can produce 800 V square pulses continously at 1 MHz rate with 46 ns in risetime and 31 ns in falltime when driving a 51 pF capacitive load. Silicon single-photon detectors (SPDs) are the key devices for detecting single photons in the visible wavelength range. Here we present high detection efficiency silicon SPDs dedicated to the generation of multiphoton entanglement based on the technique of high-frequency sine wave gating. The silicon single-photon avalanche diode components are acquired by disassembling 6 commercial single-photon counting modules (SPCMs). Using the new quenching electronics, the average detection efficiency of SPDs is increased from 68.6% to 73.1% at a wavelength of 785 nm. These sine wave gating SPDs are then applied in a four-photon entanglement experiment, and the four-fold coincidence count rate is increased by 30% without degrading its visibility compared with the original SPCMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of vaccine success is introduced into an epidemic spreading model consisting of three states: susceptible, infectious, and vaccinated. Moreover, the effect of three types, namely, contact, local, and global, of infection awareness and immunization awareness is also taken into consideration. The model generalizes those considered in Pastor-Satorras and Vespignani [Phys. Rev. E 63, 066117 (2001)], Pastor-Satorras and Vespignani [Phys. Rev. E 65, 036104 (2002)], Moreno et al. [Eur. Phys. J. B 26, 521-529 (2002)], Wu et al. [Chaos 22, 013101 (2012)], and Wu et al. [Chaos 24, 023108 (2014)]. Our main results contain the following. First, the epidemic threshold is explicitly obtained. In particular, we show that, for any initial conditions, the epidemic eventually dies out regardless of what other factors are whenever some type of immunization awareness is considered, and vaccination has a perfect success. Moreover, the threshold is independent of the global type of awareness. Second, we compare the effect of contact and local types of awareness on the epidemic thresholds between heterogeneous networks and homogeneous networks. Specifically, we find that the epidemic threshold for the homogeneous network can be lower than that of the heterogeneous network in an intermediate regime for intensity of contact infection awareness while it is higher otherwise. Enhanced transmission, and specifically tunable enhanced transmission, of microwaves through a subwavelength metal aperture is of major significance for a variety of microwave applications. In this study, by placing a metamaterial resonator into a subwavelength aperture, we experimentally and numerically demonstrated a transmission enhancement of 20 dB at the first Mie resonant frequency of this metamaterial resonator. Importantly, this enhanced transmission is also thermally tunable because of the high temperature coefficient of resonant frequency of the dielectric-based metamaterial resonator. Over a temperature range from 20 °C to 90 °C, the enhanced transmission peak was adjusted from 11.6 GHz to 12.1 GHz. An SIS model based on the microscopic Markov-chain approximation is considered in this paper. It is assumed that the individual vaccination behavior depends on the contact awareness, local and global information of an epidemic. To better simulate the real situation, the vaccine failure rate is also taken into consideration. Our main conclusions are given in the following. First, we show that if the vaccine failure rate α is zero, then the epidemic eventually dies out regardless of what the network structure is or how large the effective spreading rate and the immunization response rates of an epidemic are. Second, we show that for any positive α, there exists a positive epidemic threshold depending on an adjusted network structure, which is only determined by the structure of the original network, the positive vaccine failure rate and the immunization response rate for contact awareness. Moreover, the epidemic threshold increases with respect to the strength of the immunization response rate for contact awareness. Finally, if the vaccine failure rate and the immunization response rate for contact awareness are positive, then there exists a critical vaccine failure rate αc >0 so that the disease free equilibrium (DFE) is stable (resp., unstable) if α<αc (resp., α>αc). The magnetic anisotropy is of both scientific and technological interest for magneto-optical material GdFeCo film. We characterize the magnetic anisotropy of a 20 nm GdFeCo film from 265 K to 320 K via Kerr loops and ferromagnetic resonance. With increasing temperature, both of the first-order uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and shape anisotropy increase. However, the competition between them causes a temperature-driven spin reorientation transition (SRT) and the effective perpendicular magnetic anisotropy decrease from 2.22 x 104ergs/cm³ (288K) to --1.56 x 104ergs/cm³ (317K). In this work, we study the cluster synchronization of chemically coupled and generally formulated networks which are allowed to be nonidentical. The sufficient condition for the existence of stably synchronous clusters is derived. Specifically, we only need to check the stability of the origins of m decoupled linear systems. Here, m is the number of subpopulations. Examples of nonidentical networks such as Hindmarsh-Rose (HR) neurons with various choices of parameters in different subpopulations, or HR neurons in one subpopulation and FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons in the other subpopulation are provided. We present a real-time and fully integrated quantum random number generator (QRNG) by measuring laser phase fluctuations. The QRNG scheme based on laser phase fluctuations is featured for its capability of generating ultra-high-speed random numbers. However, the speed bottleneck of a practical QRNG lies on the limited speed of randomness extraction. To close the gap between the fast randomness generation and the slow post-processing, we propose a pipeline extraction algorithm based on Toeplitz matrix hashing and implement it in a high-speed field-programmable gate array. Further, all the QRNG components are integrated into a module, including a compact and actively stabilized interferometer, high-speed data acquisition, and real-time data post-processing and transmission. Global synchronization in complex networks has attracted considerable interest in various fields. There are mainly two analytical approaches for studying such time-varying networks. The first approach is Lyapunov function-based methods. For such an approach, the connected-graph-stability (CGS) method arguably gives the best results. Nevertheless, CGS is limited to the networks with cooperative couplings. The matrix measure approach (MMA) proposed by Chen, although having a wider range of applications in the network topologies than that of CGS, works for smaller numbers of nodes in most network topologies. The approach also has a limitation with networks having partial-state coupling. Other than giving yet another MMA, we introduce a new and, in some cases, optimal coordinate transformation to study such networks. Our approach fixes all the drawbacks of CGS and MMA. In addition, by merely checking the structure of the vector field of the individual oscillator, we shall be able to determine if the system is globally synchronized. Based on the concept of matrix measures, we study global stability of synchronization in networks. Our results apply to quite general connectivity topology. In addition, a rigorous lower bound on the coupling strength for global synchronization of all oscillators is also obtained. The magnetization reversal of perpendicular exchange biased [Co/Pt]/Co60Fe40/IrMn and [Co/Pt]/Co/IrMn multilayers was investigated by time-resolved surface magneto-optical Kerr effect and Kerr microscopy. Compared with the nearly symmetric reversal of the [Co/Pt]/Co/IrMn with a smaller exchange bias field, significantly asymmetric domain evolution in the [Co/Pt]/Co60Fe40/IrMn with a larger exchange bias field was directly observed by Kerr microscopy. The asymmetric magnetization reversal is discussed in terms of the average thermally activated energy barriers as well as the dispersions of the barriers. The substitution of the interfacial Co60Fe40 layer for Co layer results in an enhancement of the interfacial exchange coupling [variant_greek_epsilon]int and absolute dispersion of interfacial exchange coupling, σ[variant_greek_epsilon]int, and consequently increases the exchange bias field and reversal asymmetry. We represent a report on the growth and structure of Cu capping layer on ultrathin Fe films on Si (111) substrate as well as its effect on magnetic anisotropy. Cu grows as forming triangular-shaped pyramids with nano-facets and in epitaxial mode with Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation. Spin reorientation transition (SRT) from out-of-plane to in-plane of Fe films is induced by Cu capping, which is believed to be mainly affected by strain change in Fe films. Based on strain relief mechanism, rapid decrease in Cu critical thickness to induce SRT with increasing Fe underlayer thickness can be interpreted quite well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report an investigation on magnetic anisotropy of Co/Si(111) films deposited at oblique incidence. An in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) with the easy axis perpendicular to the incident flux plane was observed to superimpose on sixfold magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Co films. We built a total energy model to investigate the magnetization reversal mechanism around hard axis. The simulated value of UMA is Ku=1.7×105 erg/cm3, which is consistent with Kshape=1.1×105 erg/cm3 calculated from scanning tunneling microscope image. This good agreement suggests the in-plane UMA is mainly originated from the shape of the oblique deposited Co stripes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fe single crystal film with thickness of 45 monolayer was fabricated on vicinal Si(111) substrate using ultrathin p(2×2) iron silicide as buffer layer. Scanning tunneling microscope images show that the Fe nanoclusters form chains on vicinal substrate. The first- and second-order magnetocrystalline anisotropies, uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constants of the films were obtained by fitting the ferromagnetic resonance data. The sixfold symmetry of the in-plane resonance field for Fe(111) film was changed into the superposition of a fourfold and a twofold contribution due to the effect of the vicinal substrate. Magnetic properties of irregular Fe islands grown on Si(111) substrate with Pb buffer layer by molecular beam epitaxy have been investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulation. During the simulation, the dipolar interaction energy among islands and the demagnetization energy of each island were accurately calculated in the Fourier space with the aid of cluster multiple labeling technique. The simulated results, i.e., the magnetic hysteresis loops and the temperature dependence of remanent magnetization, are in good agreement with the experimental ones measured by in situ surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (SMOKE).
