We present the Aurore platform for ultrafast sciences. This platform is based on a unique 20 W, 1 kHz, 26 fs Ti:sapphire laser system designed for reliable operation and high intensity temporal contrast. The specific design ensures the high stability in terms of pulse duration, energy, and beam pointing necessary for extended experimental campaigns. The laser supplies 5 different beamlines, all dedicated to a specific field: attosecond science (Aurore 1), ultrafast phase transitions in solids (Aurore 2 and 3), ultrafast luminescence in solids (Aurore 4), and femtochemistry (Aurore 5). We report the use of zone plate optics as a monochromator for the spectral selection of a single high-order harmonic of a femtosecond laser generated in a rare gas medium. We show that this is a convenient way of monochromatizing the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) pulses in the photon energy range from 30 up to 70 eV while keeping the pulse duration in the femtosecond range. We measure the emission spectra with a typical energy resolution of E/ΔE=60. Comparably high transmission and diffraction efficiencies allow the record of images of different harmonics using a camera within a few seconds of acquisition time. This is our first step toward a VUV microscope with a submicrometer spatial resolution and femtosecond time resolution. Possible applications of this setup are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The efficiency and uniformity of heating induced by hard x-ray free-electron laser pulse is investigated for 0.5 μm silver foils using the X-ray Pump Probe instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source facility. Intense 8.9 keV x-ray pulses of 60 fs duration deposit energy predominantly via inner-shell ionization to create a non-equilibrium Ag solid density plasma. The x-ray pulses are focused to 14 × 17 μm² by means of beryllium lenses and by varying the total beam energy, the energy deposition is varied over a range of irradiances from 4.4 to 6.5 × 1015 W/cm². Two time-and-space resolved interferometers simultaneously probed the expansion of the front and rear sample surfaces and find evidence of a nearly symmetric expansion pointing to the uniformity of energy deposition over the full target thickness. The experimental results are compared with two different hydrodynamic simulations of the sample expansion. The agreement between experimental and theoretical results yields an estimate of the temperature evolution as a function of x-ray irradiance that varies from 8 to 10 eV for the x-ray irradiances studied. We demonstrate thin film x-ray reflectivity measurements with picosecond time resolution. Amorphous carbon films with a thickness of 46 nm were excited with laser pulses characterized by 100 fs duration, a wavelength of 800 nm, and a fluence of 70 mJ/cm2. The laser-induced stress caused a rapid expansion of the thin film followed by a relaxation of the film thickness as heat diffused into the silicon substrate. We were able to measure changes in film thickness as small as 0.2 nm. The relaxation dynamics are consistent with a model which accounts for carrier-enhanced substrate heat diffusivity. A calibrated x-ray spectrometer was used to characterize an intense 4.5 keV Kα source. Generated from the interaction of 30 J-320 fs laser pulses focused on 25 μm thick Ti foils, the conversion efficiency into Ti Kα line is estimated to (9±6)×10-5. Highly efficient collection, monochromatization and focusing were achieved using an ellipsoidally bent highly oriented pyrolytic graphite crystal. The measured 700 μm full width half maximum (FWHM) focal spot leads to a fluence of (3.0±2.1) mJ/cm2 hence paving the way to the study of intense x-ray pulse interaction with matter as demonstrated by a first simple experiment. We present results of damage studies conducted at the Free Electron LASer in Hamburg (FLASH) facility with 13.5 nm (91.8 eV) and 7 nm (177.1 eV) radiations. The laser beam was focused on a sample of 890-nm-thick amorphous carbon coated on a silicon wafer mimicking a x-ray mirror. The fluence threshold for graphitization was determined for different grazing angles above and below the critical angle. The observed angular dependence of Fth is explained by the variation in absorption depth and reflectivity. Moreover, the absorbed local dose needed for the phase transition leading to graphitization is shown to vary with the radiation wavelength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method for the detection of dust particles occurring in silane–argon gas mixture plasmas is presented. It is based on the spectral analysis of the radio-frequency current. The amplitudes of the fundamental (13.56 MHz) and second harmonics (40.68 MHz) are very sensitive to the presence of the earlier nanoparticles when their size is in the range of 2–3 nm even if their influence on the capacitive character of the impedance is negligible. This method is nonperturbative, with a temporal resolution in the microsecond range, very easy to implement, and can thus be used for industrial reactors. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. A laser-based tabletop approach to femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with photons in the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) energy range is described. The femtosecond VUV pulses are produced by high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of an amplified femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser system. Two generations of the same setup and results from photoelectron spectroscopy in the gas phase are discussed. In both generations, a toroidal grating monochromator was used to select one harmonic in the photon energy range of 20-30 eV. The first generation of the setup was used to perform photoelectron spectroscopy in the gas phase to determine the bandwidth of the source. We find that our HHG source has a bandwidth of 140 ± 40 meV. The second and current generation is optimized for femtosecond pump-probe photoelectron spectroscopy with high flux and a small spot size at the sample of the femtosecond probe pulses. The VUV radiation is focused into the interaction region with a toroidal mirror to a spot smaller than 100 × 100 μm(2) and the flux amounts to 10(10) photons/s at the sample at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. The duration of the monochromatized VUV pulses is determined to be 120 fs resulting in an overall pump-probe time resolution of 135 ± 5 fs.
