Exploring very-large-scale motions (VLSMs) in open channel flows (OCFs) is crucial for comprehensively understanding material transport and energy exchange. While previous studies focused on OCFs in ideal flumes with simple boundaries, this paper presents large eddy simulation (LES) results on the existence and scale characteristics of VLSMs in complex river morphologies with the Minjiang River in southwestern China as a case study. This research demonstrates that the OpenFOAM-based LES model is capable of accurately reconstructing the time-averaged flow field and providing instantaneous velocity data that capture VLSMs with sufficient resolution. Spectrum analysis of the streamwise fluctuating velocity shows that VLSMs are present in the straight segment of the river, with streamwise wavelengths approximately (16–22) times the water depth but are absent in the bend and confluence segments due to the suppression by secondary currents. This article validates the effectiveness of LES in examining the characteristics of VLSMs in natural rivers, thereby laying a good foundation for further studies on the impacts of such structures on sediment transport and pollutant dispersion. Accurate modelling and prediction of sediment transport in aquatic environments is essential for sustainable coastal and riverine management. Current capabilities rely on physical process-based numerical models and fine-scale sediment flux measurements. High-resolution hydroacoustic instrumentation has emerged as a promising tool for such measurements. However, challenges arise due to the inherent complexity of ultrasound scattering processes. This study introduces a numerical modelling using a point-particle approach to simulate the echoes backscattered by such instrumentation in sediment-laden flow conditions. The model considers geometric, statistical, particle cloud, and flow-induced effects on sediment velocity, concentration, and flux estimates using an acoustic concentration and velocity profiler as a reference. The model performance is assessed here under unidirectional constant flow conditions in terms of velocity, concentration, and time-resolved sediment flux estimates for a large range of the particles' advection speed and sampled volume sizes. Application to the estimation of the measurement accuracy of sediment flux in these flows is also considered, with a final error on the flux seen to be partially controlled by the residence time of particles within the sampled volumes. Seepage is one of the important factors involved in natural flow conditions, contributing to changes in flow turbulence patterns and morphological changes due to the transport of sediments. This transport of sediment particles influences the development of fluvial bedforms in any river channel. However, previous research on fluvial dynamics has not considered the influence of seepage on the flow field over the fluvial bedforms. The present experimental research aims to explore the behavioral patterns of turbulent kinetic energy, the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) budget, and quadrant analysis for flows over two-dimensional dune shaped bedforms in the absence and presence of downward seepage. Results from the study illustrate that at the measurement locations on the initial and lee side sections of a dune, the TKE increases with the introduction of downward seepage, leading to an increase in turbulence production near the bed-surface region. The flow energy under both no seepage and seepage conditions contributes mainly to the turbulent production. Turbulence diffusion and dissipation rates have been found to decline in the near-bed region of the initial and lee side sections of the dune. However, turbulent production has been found to be significantly higher in the presence of downward seepage than under the no seepage condition. Similarly, turbulent kinetic energy flux increases in the streamwise direction, while it reduces in the vertical direction at initial sections and lee side sections of the dune under seepage conditions. However, at the middle sections and crest portion of the dune, opposite behavioral patterns are observed for all the aforementioned turbulent entities. Quadrant analysis reveals that the sweep and ejection event increases while inward and outward interaction reduces in the near bed zone. Although the contribution of both sweep and ejection events increases in the presence of downward seepage, sweep events have clear dominance in the near bed region, suggesting the possibility of a higher rate and amount of sediment transportation than under the no seepage condition. Although sound has been applied to the study of sediment transport processes for a number of years, it is acknowledged that there are still problems in using the backscattered signal to measure suspended sediment parameters. In particular, when the attenuation due to the suspension becomes significant, the uncertainty associated with the variability in the scattering characteristics of the sediments in suspension can lead to inversion errors which accumulate as the sound propagates through the suspension. To study this attenuation propagation problem, numerical simulations and laboratory experiments have been used to assess the impact unpredictability in the scattering properties of the suspension has on the acoustically derived suspended sediments parameters. The results clearly show the commonly applied iterative implicit inversion can lead to calculated sediment parameters, which become increasingly erroneous with range, as the sound propagates through the suspension. To address this problem an alternative approach to the iterative implicit formulation is investigated using a recently described dual frequency inversion. This approach is not subject to the accumulation of errors and has an explicit solution. Here the dual frequency inversion is assessed and calculated suspended sediment parameters are compared with those obtained from the iterative implicit inversion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mine burial by scour was measured in real-time using cylindrical instrumented mines and rotary and two-axis pencil beam sonar. Two mines and the sonar were connected to a shore-based facility at the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory. Data on mine movement (heading, pitch, and roll), scour pit geometry, percent burial, and environmental processes responsible for scour burial including significant wave height, period, and tidal height were analyzed daily and presented on a mine burial web site. Sonar images show scour pits developing around the mines in response to storm generated significant wave heights greater than 2.0 m. Mines pitch, change heading as they roll into scour pits. A comparison of the observed mine burial and real-time predictions using a modified version of the Whitehouse equations for wave-induced scour model exhibited good agreement suggesting mine burial by scour in similar sandy environments is predictable from bathymetry, sediment type, and measured or predicted surface wave conditions. The Coastal Observatory at Martha’s Vineyard provided a unique opportunity for real-time data collection and analysis of both sediment transport events and seafloor-object interactions during storms.
