Ultraviolet reflection-absorption spectroscopy of C6H6 molecules is reported.

A study of benzene dissociation in a benzene/argon mixture that is subjected to a pulsed glow discharge has been conducted. Diagnostics experiments were performed to determine the destruction mechanism involved in the observable dissociation reaction. The results of the study indicate that the destruction of benzene is primarily due to the excitation transfer from the metastable states of argon to benzene during the discharge's afterglow.

Time-resolved photographic, photoacoustic and absorbance measurements were performed to analyze nanosecond KrF excimer laser ablation of several benzene solutions. Time-resolved absorbance increased during the excitation pulse due to the absorption of excitation photons by benzyl radicals. The results indicate a concentration-dependent ablation mechanism whereby the ablation mechanism of the benzene derivative solutions switches from photochemical to photothermal as the solution concentration decreases.

Measurements were made on the metal axial acceleration and interface velocity of impedance-matching salt crystals using Fabry-Perot laser interferometry by detonating triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB)-based charges. The ultrafine TATB became the bases for the investigation of the von Neumann spike state, reaction rates and the reaction product equation of state in the ignition and growth detonation reactive flow model. The data derived were found consistent with other estimates for carbon-rich explosives, which took account of the carbon condensation processes.

The benzene ring vibrational motion in poly(phenylenevinylene) is analyzed by using [super 1]H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. A simple model of the out-of-plane phenylene oscillation that has given rise to the change in the dipolar splitting of the [super 1]H NMR line shape is used for obtaining the oscillation angle of the benzene ring as a function of temperature.

A study of the parameters involved in the spatial distribution of the optical intensity in the vicinity of the probe end using photosensitive azobenzene-containing films is put forth. The results are analyzed as illumination parameters, such as laser beam, exposure time and illumination geometry, as well as the average tip-to-sample distance and tip geometry.

The formation of a surface relief grating (SRG) on polymer films containing azobenzene moieties during exposure with counter-rotating circularly polarized light of lambda (sub write) =488nm by probing the diffracting efficiency of a second low power laser is studied. The observations made are found similar to the trends suggested by finite element calculations.
