Abstract

We carried out a statistical study of equatorial dipolarization fronts (DFs) detected by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission during the full 2017 Earth's magnetotail season. We found that two DF classes are distinguished: class I (74.4%) corresponds to the standard DF properties and energy dissipation and a new class II (25.6%). This new class includes the six DF discussed in Alqeeq et al. (2022, ) and corresponds to a bump of the magnetic field associated with a minimum in the ion and electron pressures and a reversal of the energy conversion process. The possible origin of this second class is discussed. Both DF classes show that the energy conversion process in the spacecraft frame is driven by the diamagnetic current dominated by the ion pressure gradient. In the fluid frame, it is driven by the electron pressure gradient. In addition, we have shown that the energy conversion processes are not homogeneous at the electron scale mostly due to the variations of the electric fields for both DF classes., QC 20231031

Abstract

We report a unique conjugate observation of fast flows and associated current sheet disturbances in the near-Earth magnetotail by MMS (Magnetospheric Multiscale) and Cluster preceding a positive bay onset of a small substorm at similar to 14:10 UT, September 8, 2018. MMS and Cluster were located both at X similar to -14 R-E. A dipolarization front (DF) of a localized fast flow was detected by Cluster and MMS, separated in the dawn-dusk direction by similar to 4 R-E,R- almost simultaneously. Adiabatic electron acceleration signatures revealed from the comparison of the energy spectra confirm that both spacecraft encounter the same DF. We analyzed the change in the current sheet structure based on multi-scale multi-point data analysis. The current sheet thickened during the passage of DF, yet, temporally thinned subsequently associated with another flow enhancement centered more on the dawnward side of the initial flow. MMS and Cluster observed intense perpendicular and parallel current in the off-equatorial region mainly during this interval of the current sheet thinning. Maximum field-aligned currents both at MMS and Cluster are directed tailward. Detailed analysis of MMS data showed that the intense field-aligned currents consisted of multiple small-scale intense current layers accompanied by enhanced Hall-currents in the dawn-dusk flow-shear region. We suggest that the current sheet thinning is related to the flow bouncing process and/or to the expansion/activation of reconnection. Based on these mesoscale and small-scale multipoint observations, 3D evolution of the flow and current-sheet disturbances was inferred preceding the development of a substorm current wedge.

Abstract

Kink-like flapping motions of current sheets are commonly observed in the magnetotail. Such oscillations have periods of a few minutes down to a few seconds and they propagate toward the flanks of the plasma sheet. Here, we report a short-period (T approximate to 25 s) flapping event of a thin current sheet observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft in the dusk-side plasma sheet following a fast Earthward plasma flow. We characterize the flapping structure using the multi-spacecraft spatiotemporal derivative and timing methods, and we find that the wave-like structure is propagating along the average current direction with a phase velocity comparable to the ion velocity. We show that the wavelength of the oscillating current sheet scales with its thickness as expected for a drift-kink mode. The decoupling of the ion bulk motion from the electron bulk motion suggests that the current sheet is thin. We discuss the presence of the lower hybrid waves associated with gradients of density as a broadening process of the thin current sheet.

Abstract

Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in collisionless space plasma environment, and plasma waves relevant to the kinetic interactions can have a significant impact on the multiscale behavior of reconnection. Here, we present Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations during an encounter of an X line of symmetric magnetic reconnection in the magnetotail. The X line is characterized by reversals of ion and electron jets and electromagnetic fields, agyrotropic electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs), and an electron-scale current sheet. MMS observe large-amplitude nonlinear upper-hybrid (UH) waves on both sides of the neutral line, and the wave amplitudes have highly localized distribution along the normal direction. The inbound meandering electrons drive the UH waves, releasing the free energy stored from the reconnection electric field along the meandering trajectories. The interaction between the meandering electrons and the UH waves may modify the balance of the reconnection electric field around the X line. Plain Language Summary The electron-scale kinetic physics in the electron diffusion region (EDR) controls how magnetic field lines break and reconnect. Electron crescent, an indicator of EDR, can drive high-frequency electrostatic waves around EDR. For the first time, the upper-hybrid (UH) waves are observed on both sides of the X line and we show the direct association between the UH waves and the reconnection electric field. The strong wave-electron interaction can change the electron-scale dynamics and may modify the reconnection electric field. Abstract

Decomposing the electric field (E) into the contributions from generalized Ohm's law provides key insight into both nonlinear and dissipative dynamics across the full range of scales within a plasma. Using high-resolution, multispacecraft measurements of three intervals in Earth's magnetosheath from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, the influence of the magnetohydrodynamic, Hall, electron pressure, and electron inertia terms from Ohm's law, as well as the impact of a finite electron mass, on the turbulent E spectrum are examined observationally for the first time. The magnetohydrodynamic, Hall, and electron pressure terms are the dominant contributions to E over the accessible length scales, which extend to scales smaller than the electron gyroradius at the greatest extent, with the Hall and electron pressure terms dominating at sub-ion scales. The strength of the nonideal electron pressure contribution is stronger than expected from linear kinetic Alfven waves and a partial antialignment with the Hall electric field is present, linked to the relative importance of electron diamagnetic currents in the turbulence. The relative contribution of linear and nonlinear electric fields scale with the turbulent fluctuation amplitude, with nonlinear contributions playing the dominant role in shaping E for the intervals examined in this study. Overall, the sum of the Ohm's law terms and measured E agree to within similar to 20% across the observable scales. These results both confirm general expectations about the behavior of E in turbulent plasmas and highlight features that should be explored further theoretically., QC 20210412

18. MMS Observations of Intense Whistler Waves Within Earth's Supercritical Bow Shock : Source Mechanism and Impact on Shock Structure and Plasma Transport

Abstract

The properties of whistler waves near lower-hybrid frequencies within Earth's quasi-perpendicular bow shock are examined using data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. These waves appear as right-hand polarized wave packets propagating upstream obliquely to the magnetic field and shock normal with phase speeds from a few hundred up to 1,600 km/s. The wavelengths are near the ion inertial length scale (lambda similar to 0.3-1.3 lambda(i)). Detailed analysis finds characteristics consistent with the modified two-stream instability mechanism driven by the reflected ion and electron drift. Correlations between wave and electron anisotropy variations reveal that the whistlers are affecting electron dynamics and thus their perpendicular and parallel temperatures. The electron signatures are explainable via the interaction of magnetized electrons in the whistler induced nonmonotonic magnetic fields. These waves have intense magnetic fields (delta B/B-circle similar to 0.1-1) and carry sizable currents that are a significant fraction of the thermal current (|J/J(vte)|similar to 0.1-0.5). The whistler-induced currents and the electron anisotropies are sufficiently large to respectively excite high-frequency (HF) electrostatic (>100 Hz) and HF whistler waves (f similar to 0.1-0.5f(ce)). Energy dissipationJ center dot Efrom whistlers at 30 Hz and below range from a few thousandths to few hundredths of mu W/m(3). Comparisons reveal that plasma energy is converted to wave energy in the foot, whereas wave energy gets dissipated into the plasma in the ramp, where irreversible heating occurs. These observed features are indicative of an intricate coupling between small-scale interaction processes and larger-scale structure transpiring within the layer. Abstract

In the magnetosheath, intense whistler mode waves, called "Lion roars," are often detected in troughs of magnetic field intensity in mirror mode structures. Using data obtained by the four Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft, we show that reversals of gradient of magnetic field intensity along the magnetic field correspond to reversals of the field-aligned component of Poynting flux of whistler mode waves in the troughs. Such a characteristic is consistent with the idea that the whistler mode waves are effectively generated near the local minima of magnetic field intensity because of the smallest cyclotron resonance velocity and propagate toward regions of larger magnetic field intensity along the magnetic field lines on both sides. We use the reversal of the Poynting flux as an indicator of wave source regions. In these regions, we find that pancake or an outer edge of butterfly electron distributions above similar to 100 eV are good candidates for wave generation. Unclear correlations of phase difference and amplitude variations of whistler mode waves in cases of similar to 40 km spacecraft separation indicate that a simple plane wave approximation with a constant amplitude is not valid at this spatial scale that is much smaller than the ion gyroradius. The whistler mode waves consist of small coherent wave packets from multiple sources with spatial scales smaller than tens of electron gyroradii transverse to the background magnetic field in a mirror mode structure., QC 20200702
