The article focuses on the possible changes in the microbial etiology and prognosis of late-onset prosthetic valve endocarditis associated with hospital-acquired infections. Infectious endocarditis is a changing disease with predisposing risk factors, etiology, manifestations and therapeutics in continuous evolution. Although recognized for almost 30 years, invasive medical technology has been associated with an increasing number of cases of infectious endocarditis, and there is evidence that hospital-acquired endocarditis not associated with cardiac surgery is on the rise.
