The article discusses the present principles of latent tuberculosis (TB) infection (LTB1) diagnosis and treatment and their role in controlling the TB epidemic in high-burden countries. It cites the lack of a gold standard test for LTB1 diagnosis as a major impediment in recognizing the population at risk. It indicates that systematic trials that focus on high-risk groups in resource-limited settings can help formulate clear-cut individual national guidelines on LTB1 management in the future.
