We synthesized a series of rigid ladder-type diamines from readily available bromoanilines and norbornadiene in one step using facile catalytic arene–norbornene annulation (CANAL). Polycondensation of CANAL ladder diamines with 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride led to a series of microporous polyimides with different degrees of rotational freedom around the imide linkages. CANAL-PIs exhibited good solubility in a wide range of organic solvents, high thermal stability with decomposition temperature above 450 °C, high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas of ∼200–530 m2 g–1, and abundant micropore volume with variable pore size distributions. Mechanically robust membranes can be easily formed from CANAL-PIs and gave high gas permeabilities and moderate gas-pair selectivities. A simple synthetic route to a novel sterically hindered triptycene-based diamine, 1,3,6,8-tetramethyl-2,7-diaminotriptycene (TMDAT), and its use in the preparation of high molecular weight polyimides of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-PIs) are reported. The organosoluble TMDAT-derived polyimides displayed high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas ranging between 610 and 850 m2 g–1 and demonstrated excellent thermal stability of up to 510 °C. Introduction of the rigid three-dimensional paddlewheel triptycene framework and the tetramethyl-induced restriction of the imide bond rotation resulted in highly permeable polyimides with moderate gas-pair selectivity. The best performing polyimide made from TMDAT and a triptycene-based dianhydride showed gas transport properties located between the 2008 and 2015 polymer permeability/selectivity trade-off curves with H2 and O2 permeabilities of 2858 and 575 barrer combined with H2/N2 and O2/N2 selectivities of 24 and 4.8, respectively, after 200 days of physical aging.

Mixed-matrix membranes composed of mechanically strong, solution-processable polymers and highly selective ultramicroporous fillers (pore size < 7 A) are superior candidate membrane materials for various energy-intensive gas separation applications because of their structural tunability to achieve enhanced gas permeability and gas–pair selectivity. However, their industrial implementation has been severely hindered because inefficient compatibility of the polymer matrices and crystalline fillers results in poorly performing membranes with low filler capacity and interfacial defects. The interaction of the l-lactate ion ( l-CH3CH(OH)COO(-), lact(-1)) with hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) nanoparticles (average diameter 11 nm) in the presence of bulk water at pH 5 and 25 degrees C was examined using a combination of (1) macroscopic uptake measurements, (2) in situ attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and (3) density functional theory modeling at the B3LYP/6-31+G* level. Uptake measurements indicate that increasing [ lact(-1)]aq results in an increase in lact(-1) uptake and a concomitant increase in Fe(III) release as a result of the dissolution of the hematite nanoparticles. The ATR-FTIR spectra of aqueous lact(-1) and lact(-1) adsorbed onto hematite nanoparticles at coverages ranging from 0.52 to 5.21 micromol/m2 showed significant differences in peak positions and shapes of carboxyl group stretches. On the basis of Gaussian fits of the spectra, we conclude that lact(-1) is present as both outer-sphere and inner-sphere complexes on the hematite nanoparticles. No significant dependence of the extent of lact(-1) adsorption on background electrolyte concentration was found, suggesting that the dominant adsorption mode for lact(-1) is inner sphere under these conditions. On the basis of quantum chemical modeling, we suggest that inner-sphere complexes of lact(-1) adsorbed on hematite nanoparticles occur dominantly as monodentate, mononuclear complexes with the hydroxyl functional group pointing away from the Fe(III) center.
