Abstract

International audience; Epoxy vitrimers encompass many advantages compared to traditional epoxy materials such as recyclability, repairability, and reprocessability. These properties are induced by the incorporation of dynamic reversible covalent bonds. Recently, the incorporation of aromatic disulfide bridges that are dynamic has expanded the development of new eco-friendly epoxy materials. Herein, we studied a bio-based aliphatic disulfide based on cystamine as a hardener with a vanillin-derived bio-sourced epoxy to prepare fully bio-based epoxy vitrimers. This article provides a comparative study between cystamine and an aromatic disulfide benchmark hardener issued from petrol resources. This work demonstrated that the presence of this aliphatic hardener has a significant influence not only on the reactivity, but most importantly on the resulting dynamic properties. An interesting yet counterintuitive accelerating effect of the dynamic exchanges was clearly demonstrated with only 2 to 20% of molar fraction of cystamine added to the aromatic disulfide formulation. A similar glass transition was obtained compared to the purely aromatic analogue, but relaxation times were decreased by an order of magnitude.

Abstract

Environmental science & technology 57(7), 2768 - 2778 (2023). doi:10.1021/acs.est.2c06985, Rare earth elements (REEs) are strategic metals strongly involved in low-carbon energy conversion. However, these emerging contaminants are increasingly disseminated into ecosystems, raising concern regarding their toxicity. REE-accumulating plants are crucial subjects to better understand REE transfer to the trophic chain but are also promising phytoremediation tools. In this analysis, we deciphered REE accumulation sites in the REE-accumulating fern Dryopteris erythrosora by synchrotron X-ray μfluorescence (μXRF). This technique allows a high-resolution and in situ analysis of fresh samples or frozen-hydrated cross sections of different organs of the plant. In the sporophyte, REEs were translocated from the roots to the fronds by the xylem sap and were stored within the xylem conductive system. The comparison of REE distribution and accumulation levels in the healthy and necrotic parts of the frond shed light on the differential mobility between light and heavy REEs. Furthermore, the comparison emphasized that necrotized areas were not the main REE-accumulating sites. Finally, the absence of cell-to-cell mobility of REEs in the gametophyte suggested the absence of REE-compatible transporters in photosynthetic tissues. Abstract

International audience; Thanks to the use of filters collected daily in the west of Paris, we confirm the passage of the lead-laden plume following the fire on the roof and spire of Notre-Dame Cathedral in April 2019. The measured concentrations on the filter (Pb = 1.4 μg m–3), scanning electron microscopy and Hysplit simulation, correspond to an estimate of a few hundred kilograms of lead that would have been volatilized and then oxidized in the form of micronic and submicronic aerosols. The concentrations found in the plume are, however, much lower than those found in the environment in the 1980s and 1990s but are 100 times higher than those found in times prior to and after the fire. The isotopic signature of the plume is almost identical to that of the fine Pb dust found inside the Notre-Dame building. It is different from the isotopic signature of the Parisian atmosphere before and after the fire, but it is similar to that of the atmospheric Pb legacy recorded by peat cores over the last 300 years in France. The presence of very fine lead-bearing particles makes them potentially transportable over long distances after large urban fires. Our study shows the value of daily aerosol sampling to retrospectively trace the plumes of air pollutants from industrial accidents but also from historical monument fires such as Notre-Dame in 2019.

Abstract

International audience; Functional silica nanoparticles and in particular luminescent silica nanoparticles constitute very promising candidates for many applications in the field of biotechnology, theranostics, and photonics. However, optimizing the design of such materials requires a deep understanding of their physicochemical properties. In this article are reported extended investigations on luminescent Cs2[Mo6Br14]@SiO2 nanoparticles prepared by a water-in-oil microemulsion technique. We bring here new insights into the structure of such nanoparticles and its interplay with their optical properties. The structural interactions between the cluster units and the silica matrix were investigated and are discussed in details on the basis of FE-SEM, HAADF-STEM, ICP-OES, BET, 29Si MAS NMR, and photoluminescence studies. As part of the risk evaluation before potential applications, the toxicity of the nanoparticles both on plants and on human cells was evaluated.

Abstract

International audience; The coagulation of sodium montmorillonite by inorganic salts (NaNO3, Ca(NO3)(2) and La(NO3)(3)) was studied by combining classical turbidity measurements with wide-angle-X-ray scattering (WAXS), small-angle-X-ray scattering (SAXS), and transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM). Using size-selected samples, such a combination, associated with an original quantitative treatment of TXM images, provides a true multiscale investigation of the formed structures in a spatial range extending from a few angstroms to a few micrometers. We then show that, at neutral pH and starting with fully Na-exchanged samples, coagulation proceeds via the formation of stacks of particles with a slight mismatch between layers. These stacks arrange themselves into larger porous anisotropic particles, the porosity of which depends on the valence of the cation used for coagulation experiments. Face-face coagulation is clearly dominant under those conditions, and no evidence for significant face-edge coagulation was found. These structures appear to arrange as larger clusters, the organization of which should control the mechanical properties of the flocs.

Abstract

Aqueous colloidal suspensions of clay platelets display a sol/gel transition that is not yet understood. Depending on the nature of the clay, liquid-crystalline behavior may also be observed. For example, the suspensions of beidellite display a nematic phase whereas those of montmorillonite do not. Both beidellite and montmorillonite have a "TOT" structure but the structural electric charge is located in the tetrahedral layer for the former and in the octahedral layer for the latter. We built a setup to perform SAXS experiments on complex fluids submitted to an electric field in situ. We found that the fluid nematic phase of beidellite suspensions readily aligns in the field. However, the field had no influence on the gels, showing that the orientational degrees of freedom of the platelets are effectively frozen. Moreover, strong platelet alignment was induced by the field in the isotropic phase of both clays, in a similar way, regardless of their ability to form a nematic phase. This surprising result would suggest that the orientational degrees of freedom are not directly involved in the sol/gel transition. The ability to induce orientational order in the isotropic phase of clay suspensions can be exploited to prepare materials of controlled anisotropy.

Abstract

International audience; Epidemiological studies in urban areas have linked increasing respiratory and cardiovascular pathologies with atmospheric particulate matter (PM) from anthropic activities. However, the biological fate of metal-rich PM industrial emissions in urban areas of developed countries remains understudied. Lead toxicity and bioaccessibility assessments were therefore performed on emissions from a lead recycling plant, using complementary chemical acellular tests and toxicological assays, as a function of PM size (PM10–2.5, PM2.5–1 and PM1) and origin (furnace, refining and channeled emissions). Process PM displayed differences in metal content, granulometry, and percentage of inhalable fraction as a function of their origin. Lead gastric bioaccessibility was relatively low (maximum 25%) versus previous studies; although, because of high total lead concentrations, significant metal quantities were solubilized in simulated gastrointestinal fluids. Regardless of origin, the finest PM1 particles induced the most significant pro-inflammatory response in human bronchial epithelial cells. Moreover, this biological response correlated with pro-oxidant potential assay results, suggesting some biological predictive value for acellular tests. Pulmonary effects from lead-rich PM could be driven by thiol complexation with either lead ions or directly on the particulate surface. Finally, health concern of PM was discussed on the basis of pro-inflammatory effects, accellular test results, and PM size distribution

Abstract

International audience; Bolaamphiphilic-type structures can be effective substitutes to conventional surfactants for the interaction and stabilization of colloidal interfaces in water. Different families of bolaamphiphiles were used as a growth control and stabilizing agent for the formation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The nature of polar heads and the length of hydrophobic chain are key parameters for modulating the interaction with gold surfaces. In particular, interactions between hydrophobic chains dramatically strengthen the interactions with NP surfaces leading to a reversible aggregation process. This affects not only the gold nanoparticle growth mechanism and stabilization properties but also the catalytic properties of the modified gold nanoparticles.

This reaction was carried out in solid state using a modified vibratory ball-mill with temperature control and in solution with toluene as solvent. The effect of temperature, ball mass, material, additives, and aging reaction were studied. We reported for the first time the kinetics of a mechanochemical reaction depending on the ratio ball mass/mass of the reagent. A new kinetic model has been established that corresponds well to our experimental data and allows an estimation of the global activation energy. In solution, the retro Diels–Alder reaction was observed. The reaction was second order for the formation of endo and exo and first order for the retro Diels–Alder reaction. The grinding method shows many advantages compared to solution: shorter reaction time, total reaction, and better selectivity.

Abstract

International audience; The fate of plastic waste is a pressing issue since it forms a visible and long-lived reminder of the environmental impact of consumer habits. In this study, we examine the structural changes in the lamellar arrangements of semicrystalline poly-ethylene (PE) packaging waste with the aim of understanding the physical mechanisms of embrittlement in PE exposed to the marine environment. PE microplastics and macroplastics from identifiable PE packaging were collected in the Atlantic Ocean and compared to new PE boxes. Several experimental techniques interrogate the effects of environmental exposure on their bulk and surface properties. Size exclusion chromatography determines the molecular weight distribution of the PE polymer chains and differential scanning calorimetry gives the crystallinity. Small-and wide-angle X-ray scattering examines the packing of PE chains into semicrystalline lamellae. Longitudinal acoustic mode Raman spectroscopy provides a complementary measurement of the length of PE polymer chains extending through the crystalline lamellar domains. While there is a high degree of uncertainty in the time scale for the changes, the overall picture at the molecular scale is that although PE becomes more crystalline with environmental exposure, the lamellar order present in new packing boxes is disrupted by the weathering process. This process has important implications for embrittlement and subsequent degradation.

Abstract

International audience; This work investigates the relation between the molecular composition of the organic matter (OM), hydrocarbon generation, and porosity of artificially matured mudstones from the Kimmeridge Clay formation. Anhydrous thermal maturations, geochemical characterization (gas chromatography−mass spec-trometry, gas chromatography with a thermal conductivity detector), scanning electron microscopy observations, and nitrogen adsorption measurements were carried out. The results were compared to the calculated OM porosity after maturation. Our results reveal that samples richer in phytoplanktonic OM generated more abundant oils enriched in alkanes and lighter aromatic hydrocarbons (i.e., biphenyls and naphthalenes) that are more able to fill the adjacent pores of the mineral matrix during maturation. Both the calculated and the observed OM porosity increases during maturation, but the measured rock pore volume shows a non-linear evolution related to the amount of gas generated and the ensuing ability of the rock to preserve the pores. The secondary cracking of highly oil-prone samples generated larger amounts of C 1 −C 5 gases but lower pore volumes, less well preserved. OM composition and its ability to generate oil and gas seem therefore to affect the pore volume. These variations are nevertheless small compared to the effect of thermal maturity, which remains the major process controlling the evolution of porosity. During gas generation, high C 2 −C 5 concentrations are generated compared to methane. The short thermal maturation duration of our experiments may have delayed the conversion of C 2 −C 5 hydrocarbons to methane. In addition, slight differences in the concentrations of saturated and aromatic components and markedly different pore volumes and pore size distributions exist between artificially and naturally matured rocks. The conditions of artificial maturations may thus impact the thermal transformations of OM, emphasizing the necessity to investigate the role of the artificial maturation kinetics on OM and porosity.

International audience; This work presents a straightforward strategy to introduce highly dynamic and adaptable cross-links into common epoxy resin formulations. For this, an oligomeric amine-based curing agent containing vinylogous urethane (VU) bonds was developed. This novel polyfunctional amine curing agent can be used as a drop-in solution for existing epoxy resin technologies, resulting in transparent, rigid, and, at the same time, highly reprocessable catalyst-free epoxy vitrimers. The oligomeric VU-curing agents are prepolymerized via a straightforward condensation reaction between acetoacetates extended with different classical amine monomers and epoxy hardeners. Abstract

International audience; Using an integrated transcriptomic and proteomic approach, we characterized the venom peptidome of the European red ant, Manica rubida. We identified 13 "myrmicitoxins" that share sequence similarities with previously identified ant venom peptides, one of them being identified as an EGF-like toxin likely resulting from a threonine residue modified by O-fucosylation. Furthermore, we conducted insecticidal assays of reversed-phase HPLC venom fractions on the blowfly Lucilia caesar, permitting us to identify six myrmicitoxins (i.e., U3-, U10-, U13-, U20-MYRTX-Mri1a, U10-MYRTX-Mri1b, and U10-MYRTX-Mri1c) with an insecticidal activity. Chemically synthesized U10-MYRTX-Mri1a, -Mri1b, -Mri1c, and U20-MYRTX-Mri1a irreversibly paralyzed blowflies at the highest doses tested (30-125 nmol·g-1). U13-MYRTX-Mri1a, the most potent neurotoxic peptide at 1 h, had reversible effects after 24 h (150 nmol·g-1). Finally, U3-MYRTX-Mri1a has no insecticidal activity, even at up to 55 nmol·g-1. Thus, M. rubida employs a paralytic venom rich in linear insecticidal peptides, which likely act by disrupting cell membranes.

Abstract

Azobenzene photoswitches are valuable tools for controlling properties of molecular systems with light. In particular, we have been investigating azobenzene glycoconjugates to probe carbohydrate-protein interactions and also to design photoresponsive glycomacrocycles with modulable chiroptical and physicochemical properties. To date, direct conjugation of glycosides to azobenzenes was performed by reactions providing target compounds in limited yields. We therefore sought for a more effective and reliable coupling method. In this paper, we report on a straightforward thioarylation of azobenzene derivatives with glycosyl thiols as well as other thiol substrates, increasing the scope of azobenzene conjugation. Importantly, red-shifted azoswitches that can be addressed with visible light were easily functionalized and challenging unsymmetrical conjugates were prepared in good yields via sequential or one pot procedures. In addition, we took advantage of the presence of the sulfide bridge to tune both photochromic and thermal relaxation properties of the core azobenzene via sulfur oxidation. Based on our photochemical investigations, we finally demonstrated orthogonal three-state photoswitching in mixtures containing two distinct azobenzene thioglycosides.

Abstract

International audience; Estimates of cumulative plastic inputs into the oceans are expressed in hundred million tons, whereas the total mass of microplastics afloat at sea is 3 orders of magnitude below this. This large gap is evidence of our ignorance about the fate of plastics, as well as transformations and sinks in the oceans. One of the current challenges consists of identifying and quantifying plastic particles at the microscale, the small microplastics (SMP, 25–1000 μm). The aim of the present study is to investigate SMP concentration in count and in mass at the sea surface in the North Atlantic subtropical gyre during the sea campaign Expedition 7th Continent. After isolation, SMP were characterized by micro-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Microplastic distribution was modeled by a wind-driven vertical mixing correction model taking into account individual particle properties (dimension, shape and density). We demonstrate that SMP buoyancy is significantly decreased compared to the large microplastics (LMP, 1–5 mm) and consequently more susceptible to vertical transport. The uncorrected LMP concentration in count was between 13 000 and 174 000 pieces km–2, and was between 5 and 170 times more abundant for SMP. With a wind-driven vertical mixing correction, we estimated that SMP were 300 to 70 000 times more abundant than LMP. When discussing this in terms of weight after correction, LMP concentrations were between 50 and 1000 g km–2, and SMP concentrations were between 5 and 14 000 g km–2.

Abstract

International audience; Since the advent of nanoscience, the grail of chemists is to perfectly and reproducibly elaborate nanoparticles (NPs) of fully defined size, shape, polydispersity, and surface state. It implies a total control of the experimental parameters affecting the synthesis. In the preparation of metal oxide nanoparticles using an organometallic approach, we evidenced that the mixing time between the precursor and the ligand is surprisingly a parameter of tremendous importance. Using NMR spectroscopy, wide angle X-ray scattering, and computational DFT studies, the formation of Zn-amido oligomers through an acid–base reaction between the organometallic zinc precursor and the amine ligand is demonstrated. Over time, this polymerization process plays a major role on the control of the size and shape of the ZnO nanoparticles formed through the hydrolysis reaction. Hence, nanorods are obtained for short mixing times before hydrolysis while isotropic NPs are obtained for longer times. Furthermore, mixing induces the formation of a gel with adjustable rheological properties, thus opening new opportunities for the design of processable hybrid materials.

International audience; Dendrimers are nanosized, nonlinear, hyperbranched polymers whose overall 3D shape is key for their biological activity. Poly(PhosphorHydrazone) (PPH) dendrimers capped with aza-bisphosphonate (ABP) end groups are known to have anti-inflammatory properties enabling the control of inflammatory diseases in different mouse models. Here we screen the anti-inflammatory activity of a series of PPH dendrimers bearing between 2 and 16 ABP end groups in a mouse model of arthritis and confront the biological results with atomistic simulations of the dendrimers. We show that only the PPH dendrimers capped with 10 and 12 ABP end groups can control the flare of the inflammatory disease. All-atom accelerated molecular dynamics simulations show that dendrimers with a low number of ABP end groups are directional but highly flexible/dynamic and have thereby limited efficiency in establishing multivalent interactions. The largest dendrimer appears as nondirectional, having 16 ABP end groups forming patches all over the dendrimer surface. Conversely, intermediate dendrimers having 10 or 12 ABP end groups reach the best compromise between the number of surface groups and their stable directional gathering, a real maximization of multivalency.

Abstract

International audience; The remote assessment of soil contamination remains difficult in vegetated areas. Recent advances in hyperspectral spectroscopy suggest making use of plant reflectance to monitor oil and gas leakage from industrial facilities. However, knowledge about plant response to oil contamination is still limited, so only very few imaging applications are possible at this stage. We therefore conducted a greenhouse experiment on three species long-term exposed to either oil-contaminated or water-deficient soils. Reflectance measurements were regularly performed at leaf and plant scale over 61 days of exposure. Results showed an increase of reflectance in the visible (VIS), the red-edge and the short-wave infrared (SWIR) under both oil and water-deficit stress exposure. A contrasted response in the near-infrared (NIR) was also observed among species. Spectra underwent transformations to discriminate species’ responses to the different treatments using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) with a stepwise procedure. Original and transformed spectra enabled to discriminate the plants’ responses to the different treatments without confusion after 61 days. The discriminating wavelengths were consistent with the spectral differences observed. These results suggest differential changes in plant pigments, structure and water content as a response to various stressors, and open up promising perspectives for airborne and satellite applications.; L'évaluation à distance de la contamination du sol demeure difficile en régions végétalisées. De récentes avancées en spectroscopie hyperspectrale proposes d'exploiter la réflectance des plantes pour contrôler les déversements de pétrole et de gaz provenant d'installations pétrolières. Cependant, les connaissances sur la réponse de la plante à la contamination pétrolière demeurent limitées, donc peu d'application sont envisageables à l'échelle d'images. En ce sens, nous avons conduit une expérimentation en serre sur trois espèces exposées sur le long-terme à des sols contaminés par du pétrole ou déficient en eau. Des mesures de réflectance ont été régulièrement menées à l'échelle de la feuille et de la plante pendant 61 jours d'exposition. Les résultats ont montré une augmentation de la réflectance dans le visible (VIS), le red-edge et l'infra-rouge (SWIR) suite à l'exposition au pétrole et au stress hydrique. Une réponse contrastée a également été observée dans le proche infra(rouge (NIR). Les spectres ont fait l'objet de transformations pour discriminer les réponses des espèces aux traitements, en utilisant une analyse linéaire discriminante (LDA), suivant une procédure pas-à-pas. Les spectres originaux et transformés ont été capables de discriminer les réponses aux traitements, sans confusion, après 61 jours. Les longueurs d'ondes discriminantes se sont montrées cohérentes avec les différences spectrales observées. Ces résultats supposent des changements différentiels de pigments, de structure et de contenu en eau de la végétation comme réponse aux différents agents de stress, et laissent entrevoir des perspectives prometteuses pour des applications à l'échelle aéroportée et satellitaire.

Abstract

International audience; We apply the RAFT/MADIX technique to the micellar copolymerization of acrylamide and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid sodium salt with a hydrophobic monomer, 4-tert-butylstyrene. The resulting polymers have well-controlled molecular weight distributions. In the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate, the polymerization is better controlled by an oligo-acrylamide chain transfer agent (PAm7-XA1) than by Rhodixan A1. The associative character of the polymer is maintained under RAFT polymerization conditions and chains can be extended to form block copolymers with associative segments.

Abstract

There is an increasing interest in the specific physicochemical properties of gradient copolymers at interfaces. In this work, the phase behavior and interfacial properties of amphiphilic gradient copolymers at the water/CO2 interface are explored and compared to that of diblock copolymer counterparts. It is observed that spontaneous amphiphilic block-like gradient copolymers made of N,N-dimethylacrylamide, vinyl pivalate, and vinyl acetate exhibit slightly lower cloud point pressures in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) than the corresponding diblock copolymers. Much more pronounced differences are established at the water/scCO2 interface, with larger critical aggregation concentration (CAC), much faster adsorption kinetics and equilibration, and lower surface tension for gradient copolymers. Abstract

Supplemental activator and reducing agent (SARA) ATRP is an efficient way to diminish the amount of Cu catalyst. A kinetic study of radical generation and termination in SARA ATRP was conducted to better understand and improve the “livingness” of the process. Monomer conversions and CuII/L concentrations were concurrently determined by UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy during polymerization of methyl acrylate in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or in acetonitrile (MeCN) with tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me6TREN) or tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA) as ligands. The polymerization was well controlled in DMSO with either Me6TREN or TPMA and in MeCN with Me6TREN. However, when TPMA was used in MeCN, the rate of polymerization and the generation of CuII/L accelerated exponentially even using small surface area of Cu0, rendering control over polymerization under such conditions difficult, plausibly due to excessive comproportionation. Abstract

International audience; Metal toxicity toward microorganisms is usually evaluated by determining growth inhibition. To achieve a mechanistic interpretation of such toxic effects, the intricate coupling between cell growth kinetics and metal partitioning dynamics at the cell-solution interface over time must be considered on a quantitative level. A formalism is elaborated to evaluate cell-surface-bound, internalized, and extracellular metal fractions in the limit where metal uptake kinetics is controlled by internalization under noncomplexing medium conditions. Cell growth kinetics is tackled using the continuous logistic equation modified to include growth inhibition by metal accumulation to intracellular or cell surface sites. The theory further includes metal-proton competition for adsorption at cell-surface binding sites, as well as possible variation of cell size during exposure to metal ions. The formalism elucidates the dramatic impacts of initial cell concentration on metal bioavailability and toxicity over time, in agreement with reported algae bioassays. It further highlights that appropriate definition of toxicity endpoints requires careful inspection of the ratio between exposure time scale and time scale of metal depletion from bulk solution. The latter depends on metal internalization-excretion rate constants, microorganism growth, and the extent of metal adsorption on nonspecific, transporter, and growth inhibitory sites. As an application of the theory, Cd toxicity in the algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata is interpreted from constrained modeling of cell growth kinetics and of interfacial Cd-partitioning dynamics measured under various exposure conditions.

Abstract

Thermoresponsive hydrogels were successfully prepared from poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based polymers with different architectures (linear, branched, or hyperbranched). The macromolecular architectures strongly influence the internal structure of the hydrogels, therefore modulating their thermoresponsive and rheological properties. These hydrogels were used for the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles. Significant changes in hydrogel microstructures and in average pore size due to the presence of gold nanoparticles were observed. Additionally, their presence significantly increases both the mechanical strength and the toughness of the hydrogel networks.

Abstract

International audience; CO2 geosequestration or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) by CO2 injection in hydrocarbon reservoirs is suggested as a short-term solution for limiting CO2 atmospheric accumulation. In the case of oxy-combustion CO2 capture, the main annex gas associated with CO2 is O-2 in important proportion (=7%). Even if hydrocarbon oxidation processes by O-2 are well-known in high-temperaturelow-pressure (HT-LP) conditions, scarce data are available under reservoir conditions (high-pressurelow-temperature, HP-LT). To predict the hydrocarbon evolution in the presence of O-2 in an oil-depleted reservoir, it is necessary to investigate their reactivity. As a matter of fact, a double approach combining experimentation and modeling was performed in this study. Experiments were carried out on a model compound (n-octane), by injecting O-2/N-2 gas mixtures in a HP-LT titanium reactor. In parallel, a detailed kinetic model for n-octane, generated by the software EXGAS, was applied. Several reactions were added, and some rate parameters have been adjusted to adapt the model to reservoir conditions. The modified model was validated by experiments performed at different reaction temperatures and O-2 concentrations. The consistency between experimentations and modified oxidation model is promising for the development of a tool allowing the prediction of hydrocarbon reservoir stability.

Abstract

International audience; Guanine radical detection was carried out by a new convenient and efficient method coupling electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and indirect electrooxidation of guanine in different biological environments, from the free nucleotide to several types of DNA substrates. Compared to the widely used photoirradiation method, this method appeared more selective in the choice of the electrochemical mediator. Carried out in presence of a ruthenium mediator and PBN as spin trap, this method revealed two types of EPR spectra depending of the environment of the guanine radical. Both EPR spectra show the trapping of the neutral guanine radical G(−H)• obtained after fast deprotonation of the radical cation G•+. However, they differ by the atom where the trapped radical is centered. This difference highlights the structural dependency of the environment on the nature of the radical formed. This work gave the evidence of an innovative method to detect in situ the guanine radical.

Abstract

International audience; The interfacial structure of natural rubber (NR) colloids is investigated by means of cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and electrokinetics over a broad range of KNO3 electrolyte concentrations (4-300 mM) and pH values (1-8). The asymptotic plateau value reached by NR electrophoretic mobility (mu) in the thin double layer limit supports the presence of a soft (ion- and water-permeable) polyelectrolytic type of layer located at the periphery of the NR particles. This property is confirmed by the analysis of the electron density profile obtained from cryo-TEM that evidences a similar to 2-4 nm thick corona surrounding the NR polyisoprene core. The dependence of mu on pH and salt concentration is further marked by a dramatic decrease of the point of zero electrophoretic mobility (PZM) from 3.6 to 0.8 with increasing electrolyte concentration in the range 4-300 mM. Using a recent theory for electrohydrodynamics of soft multilayered particles, this "anomalous" dependence of the PZM on electrolyte concentration is shown to be consistent with a radial organization of anionic and cationic groups across the peripheral NR structure. The NR electrokinetic response in the pH range 1-8 is indeed found to be equivalent to that of particles surrounded by a positively charged similar to 3.5 nm thick layer (mean dissociation pK similar to 4.2) supporting a thin and negatively charged outermost layer (0.6 nm in thickness, pK similar to 0.7). Altogether, the strong dependence of the PZM on electrolyte concentration suggests that the electrostatic properties of the outer peripheral region of the NR shell are mediated by lipidic residues protruding from a shell containing a significant amount of protein-like charges. This proposed NR shell interfacial structure questions previously reported NR representations according to which the shell consists of either a fully mixed lipid protein layer, or a layer of phospholipids residing exclusively beneath an outer proteic film.

Abstract

Well-defined statistical copolymers of vinyl acetate and 1-(trifluoromethyl)vinyl acetate were synthesized by RAFT/MADIX polymerization. These copolymers exhibited enhanced solubilities in supercritical CO2 compared to poly(vinyl acetate). A copolymer composition–solubility optimum was observed, which resulted from a subtle interplay between polymer–polymer interactions and entropy of mixing.

Abstract

A system far from equilibrium, where the surfactant transfer from a small drop located in the aqueous bulk to the air-water interface results in spontaneous nonlinear oscillations of surface tension, is theoretically and experimentally considered. The oscillations in this system are the result of periodically arising and terminating Marangoni instability. The surfactant under consideration is octanoic acid, the dissociated form of which is much less surface-active than the protonated form. Numerical simulations show how the system behavior can be controlled by changes in pH and ionic strength of the aqueous phase. The results of numerical simulations are in good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract

Association constants and adsorption parameters of tetraalkylammoniumdodecyl sulfate (TAADS) ion pairs in water were determined. We have analyzed water/air surface tension measurements obtained for mixtures of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and tetraalkylammonium bromide of increasing chain lengths (TMAB, TEAB, TPAB, and TBAB). To reproduce the experimental isotherms, we coupled the association equilibrium of the ion pairs to the equations proposed by Fainerman and co-workers to model the adsorption of binary mixtures of surfactants (SDS and TAADS) with different molar areas at a nonideal surface layer. The parameters found showed that the model is not convenient to describe the effect of the addition of TMAB but a clear coherency was obtained for the three longer compounds. Ranging from TEADS to TBADS increasing hydrophobic interactions give rise to a higher associability but to a lower surface activity. Self-interactions coefficients extracted by the fitting procedure confirmed the importance of attractive interactions between the ion pairs. The calculated surface coverage showed that in every case the compound mainly adsorbed at the interface was the ion pair. For TBADS strong attractive interactions result in a phase transition at very low concentration.
