Although polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are by far the world's largest volume plastics, only a tiny fraction of these energy-rich polyolefins are currently recycled. Depolymerization of PE to its constituent monomer, ethylene, is highly endothermic and conventionally accessible only through unselective, high-temperature pyrolysis. Here, we provide experimental demonstrations of our recently proposed tandem catalysis strategy, which uses ethylene to convert PE to propylene, the commodity monomer used to make PP. The approach combines rapid olefin metathesis with rate-limiting isomerization. Monounsaturated PE is progressively disassembled at modest temperatures via many consecutive ethenolysis events, resulting selectively in propylene. Fully saturated PE can be converted to unsaturated PE starting with a single transfer dehydrogenation to ethylene, which produces a small amount of ethane (1 equiv per dehydrogenation event). These principles are demonstrated using both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. While selectivity under batch conditions is limited at high conversion by the formation of an equilibrium mixture of olefins, high selectivity to propylene (≥94%) is achieved in a semicontinuous process due to the continuous removal of propylene from the reaction mixture.

Numerical computations comprising of Grand Canonical-Monte Carlo (GCMC) and Canonical Statistical Ensemble (NVT) Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations were used to study the diffusion and sorption characteristics primarily for methane, ethane, and ethene molecules and for their ternary mixtures at different temperatures in ZIF-8 porous material. Methane as pure component or in mixture proved to be the sorbed hydrocarbon with the higher molecular mobility at the temperature range of 273-373 K among alkanes and alkenes. In addtion, alkenes were the hydrocarbons with the higher self-diffusion coefficients compared to the respective alkanes. In the ternary mixtures ethane was preferentially sorbed in ZIF-8 at all temperatures studied. Direct comparisons of the self-diffusivity data obtained from the NVT-MD simulations with recently reported Magic Angle Spinning Pulsed Field Gradient Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MAS PFG NMR) measurements showed reasonable agreement. Furthermore, the NVT-MD self-diffusivity coefficients in conjunction with the aforementioned MAS PFG NMR experimental measurements, and sorption thermodynamic data obtained from the present GCMC simulations were utilized for the development of individual Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) predictive modeling procedures in order to provide additional quantitative and qualitative information regarding the diffusion and sorption of small alkanes, alkenes in ZIF-8. The ANNs predictions were in good agreement with the experimental measurements and with the molecular simulation data. The modeling and analysis capabilities of ANNs along with their fast computations using moderate computer resources can significantly assist the irreplaceable molecular simulation and experimental approaches to cope with complicated problems at the molecular level.

The materials are evaluated in the CO2-assisted oxidative ethane dehydrogenation, a very important reaction for the synthesis of platform chemicals. In particular, we find that Zn2.92/SSZ-13 exhibits high reactivity in the conversion of C2H6 and CO2 and high ethene selectivity. In line with the experimental results, we show that the selective character of the catalyst is due to the characteristic compositional structure of the support and its topology that can effectively confine CO2 molecules. An in-depth molecular analysis via operando studies and DFT calculations shows that the rate-limiting step of the reaction with CO2 is the second C-H bond dissociation to give C2H4. The addition of CO2 effectively reduces the energy barrier of this step, favoring desorption of C2H4 while limiting byproduct formation. Overall, this work demonstrates the breakthrough potential of catalysts made of highly dispersed zinc species on zeolites in relevant transformations.

The methane emission intensity (methane emitted/gas produced or methane emitted/methane produced) of individual unconventional oil and gas production sites in the United States has a characteristic temporal behavior, exhibiting a brief period of decrease followed by a steady increase, with intensities after 10 years of production reaching levels that are 2-10 times the 10 year production-weighted average. Temporal patterns for methane emission intensity for entire production regions are more complex. Historical production data and facility data were used with a detailed basin-wide methane emission model to simulate the collective behavior of tens of thousands of wells and associated midstream facilities. For production regions with few to no new wells being brought to production, and existing wells having reached a mature stage, as in the Barnett Shale production region in north central Texas, the methane emission intensity gradually increases, as natural gas production decreases faster than emissions decrease, following the general pattern exhibited by individual wells. In production regions that are rapidly evolving, either with large numbers of new wells being put into production or with the introduction of source-specific regulations, the behavior is more complex. In the Eagle Ford Shale, which has had both a large number of new wells and the introduction of source-specific regulations, the methane emission intensity stays within relatively narrow bounds but the distribution of sources varies. As source distributions vary, basin-wide propane-to-methane and ethane-to-methane emission ratios vary, impacting methods used in source attribution.

Previous studies demonstrated that methane can be used as an electron donor to microbially remove various oxidized contaminants in groundwater. Natural gas, which is more widely available and less expensive than purified methane, is potentially an alternative source of methane. However, natural gas commonly contains a considerable amount of ethane (C2H6) and propane (C3H8), in addition to methane. It is important that these gaseous alkanes are also utilized along with methane to avoid emissions. Here, we demonstrate that perchlorate (ClO4-), a frequently reported contaminant in groundwater, can be microbially reduced to chloride (Cl-) driven by C2H6 or C3H8 under oxygen-limiting conditions. Two independent membrane biofilm reactors (MBfRs) supplied with C2H6 and C3H8, respectively, were operated in parallel to biologically reduce ClO4-. The continuous ClO4- removal during long-term MBfR operation combined with the concurrent C2H6/C3H8 consumption and ClO4- reduction in batch tests confirms that ClO4- reduction was associated with C2H6 or C3H8 oxidation. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) were synthesized in the presence of C2H6 or C3H8 and were subsequently utilized for supporting ClO4- bio-reduction in the absence of gaseous alkanes. Analysis by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) showed that transcript abundance of bmoX (encoding alpha hydroxylase subunit of C2H6/C3H8 monooxygenase) was positively correlated to the consumption rates of C2H6/C3H8, while pcrA (encoding a catalytic subunit of perchlorate reductase) was positively correlated to the consumption of ClO4-. High-throughput sequencing targeting 16S rRNA, bmoX, and pcrA indicated that Mycobacterium was the dominant microorganism oxidizing C2H6/C3H8, while Dechloromonas may be the major perchlorate-reducing bacterium in the biofilms. These findings shed light on microbial ClO4- reduction driven by C2H6 and C3H8, facilitating the development of cost-effective strategies for ex situ groundwater remediation.

Abiotic transformation of trichloroethene (TCE) in fractured porous rock such as sandstone is challenging to characterize and quantify. The objective of this study was to estimate the pseudo first-order abiotic reaction rate coefficients in diffusion-dominated intact core microcosms. The microcosms imitated clean flow through a fracture next to a contaminated rock matrix by exchanging uncontaminated groundwater, unamended or lactate-amended, in a chamber above a TCE-infused sandstone core. Rate coefficients were assessed using a numerical model of the microcosms that were calibrated to monitoring data. Average initial rate coefficients for complete dechlorination of TCE to acetylene, ethene, and ethane were estimated as 0.019 y-1 in unamended microcosms and 0.024 y-1 in lactate-amended microcosms. Moderately higher values (0.026 y-1 for unamended and 0.035 y-1 for lactate-amended) were obtained based on 13C enrichment data. Abiotic transformation rate coefficients based on gas formation were decreased in unamended microcosms after ∼25 days, to an average of 0.0008 y-1. This was presumably due to depletion of reductive capacity (average values of 0.12 ± 0.10 μeeq/g iron and 18 ± 15 μeeq/g extractable iron). Model-derived rate coefficients and reductive capacities for the intact core microcosms aligned well with results from a previous microcosm study using crushed sandstone from the same site.

A comprehensive experimental and kinetic modeling study of the ignition delay time (IDT) characteristics of some binary blends of C1–C2 gaseous hydrocarbons such as methane/ethylene, methane/ethane, and ethane/ethylene was performed over a wide range of composition (90/10, 70/30, 50/50%), temperature (∼800–2000 K), pressure (∼1–40 bar), equivalence ratio (∼0.5–2.0), and dilution (∼75–90%). An extensive literature review was conducted, and available data were extracted to create a comprehensive database for our simulations. Based on the existing literature data, an experimental matrix was designed using the Taguchi approach (L9) in order to identify and complete the experimental matrix required to generate a comprehensive experimental IDT set necessary for the validation of a chemical kinetic model. The required high- and low-temperature IDTs were collected using low-/high-pressure shock tubes and rapid compression machines, respectively. The predictions of NUIGMech1.0 are examined versus all of the available experimental data, including those taken in the current study using the IDT simulations and a correlation technique. Moreover, the individual effect of the studied parameters, including mixture composition, pressure, equivalence ratio, and dilution on IDT, is investigated over the studied temperature range. Correlations that were developed based on NUIGMech1.0 are presented for each specific blended fuel over the conditions studied. These correlations show an acceptable performance versus the experimental data. Spatially resolved emission inventories were used with an atmospheric dispersion model to predict ambient concentrations of methane, ethane, and propane in the Eagle Ford oil and gas production region in south central Texas; predicted concentrations were compared to ground level observations. Using a base case inventory, predicted median propane/ethane concentration ratios were 106% higher (95% CI: 83% higher-226% higher) than observations, while median ethane/methane concentration ratios were 112% higher (95% CI: 17% higher-228% higher) than observations. Predicted median propane and ethane concentrations were factors of 6.9 (95% CI: 3-15.2) and 3.4 (95% CI: 1.4-9) larger than observations, respectively. Predicted median methane concentrations were 7% higher (95% CI: 39% lower-37% higher) than observations. These comparisons indicate that sources of emissions with high propane/ethane ratios (condensate tank flashing) were likely overestimated in the inventories. Because sources of propane and ethane emissions are also sources of methane emissions, the results also suggest that sources of emissions with low ethane/methane ratios (midstream sources) were underestimated. This analysis demonstrates the value of using multiple light alkanes in attributing sources of methane emissions and evaluating the performance of methane emission inventories for oil and natural gas production regions.

We use molecular simulations to study the adsorption of ethane and ethylene in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. The separation of these two compounds is a crucial step in many industrial processes, most of them related to production of ethylene. Separation methods such as fractional cryogenic distillation require large energy consumption that increases the costs of ethylene production. Here, we analyze the suitability of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks for the separation of these gases on the basis of structural and chemical features. We pay special attention to the effect exerted by other gases on the adsorption and diffusion of ethane and ethylene in the structures. We found that nitrogen has an important role in the separation process and depending on the structure, it can enhance or hinder the adsorption selectivity for ethane. The presence of gases other than nitrogen also causes an effect on the ethane/ethylene separation. A mixture containing hydrogen, oxygen, methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ethane, and ethylene in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks is also investigated. Our results identify ZIFs with rho, crg, and lta topologies as good candidates for the separation of ethane and ethylene.

Incomplete combustion during flaring can lead to production of black carbon (BC) and loss of methane and other pollutants to the atmosphere, impacting climate and air quality. However, few studies have measured flare efficiency in a real-world setting. We use airborne data of plume samples from 37 unique flares in the Bakken region of North Dakota in May 2014 to calculate emission factors for BC, methane, ethane, and combustion efficiency for methane and ethane. We find no clear relationship between emission factors and aircraft-level wind speed or between methane and BC emission factors. Observed median combustion efficiencies for methane and ethane are close to expected values for typical flares according to the US EPA (98%). However, we find that the efficiency distribution is skewed, exhibiting log-normal behavior. This suggests incomplete combustion from flares contributes almost 1/5 of the total field emissions of methane and ethane measured in the Bakken shale, more than double the expected value if 98% efficiency was representative. BC emission factors also have a skewed distribution, but we find lower emission values than previous studies. The direct observation for the first time of a heavy-tail emissions distribution from flares suggests the need to consider skewed distributions when assessing flare impacts globally.

There is a need for continued assessment of methane (CH4) emissions associated with natural gas (NG) production, especially as recent advancements in horizontal drilling combined with staged hydraulic fracturing technologies have dramatically increased NG production (we refer to these wells as "unconventional" NG wells). In this study, we measured facility-level CH4 emissions rates from the NG production sector in the Marcellus region, and compared CH4 emissions between unconventional NG (UNG) well pad sites and the relatively smaller and older "conventional" NG (CvNG) sites that consist of wells drilled vertically into permeable geologic formations. A top-down tracer-flux CH4 measurement approach utilizing mobile downwind intercepts of CH4, ethane, and tracer (nitrous oxide and acetylene) plumes was performed at 18 CvNG sites (19 individual wells) and 17 UNG sites (88 individual wells). The 17 UNG sites included four sites undergoing completion flowback (FB). The mean facility-level CH4 emission rate among UNG well pad sites in routine production (18.8 kg/h (95% confidence interval (CI) on the mean of 12.0-26.8 kg/h)) was 23 times greater than the mean CH4 emissions from CvNG sites. These differences were attributed, in part, to the large size (based on number of wells and ancillary NG production equipment) and the significantly higher production rate of UNG sites. However, CvNG sites generally had much higher production-normalized CH4 emission rates (median: 11%; range: 0.35-91%) compared to UNG sites (median: 0.13%, range: 0.01-1.2%), likely resulting from a greater prevalence of avoidable process operating conditions (e.g., unresolved equipment maintenance issues). At the regional scale, we estimate that total annual CH4 emissions from 88 500 combined CvNG well pads in Pennsylvania and West Virginia (660 Gg (95% CI: 500 to 800 Gg)) exceeded that from 3390 UNG well pads by 170 Gg, reflecting the large number of CvNG wells and the comparably large fraction of CH4 lost per unit production. The new emissions data suggest that the recently instituted Pennsylvania CH4 emissions inventory substantially underestimates measured facility-level CH4 emissions by10-40 times for five UNG sites in this study.

N-Boc (S)-proline was converted into (2S)-2-[(phenylselanyl)methyl]pyrrolidine, which was alkylated on nitrogen with 2-bromo-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethan-1-one. Reaction with vinyllithium, 6-exo-trig radical cyclization (Bu3SnH, AIBN, PhMe, 110 °C), dehydration (P2O5, H3PO4), and demethylation (BBr3) gave (+)-ipalbidine with ee >99%.

We present high time resolution airborne ethane (C2H6) and methane (CH4) measurements made in March and October 2013 as part of the Barnett Coordinated Campaign over the Barnett Shale formation in Texas. Ethane fluxes are quantified using a downwind flight strategy, a first demonstration of this approach for C2H6. Additionally, ethane-to-methane emissions ratios (C2H6:CH4) of point sources were observationally determined from simultaneous airborne C2H6 and CH4 measurements during a survey flight over the source region. Distinct C2H6:CH4 × 100% molar ratios of 0.0%, 1.8%, and 9.6%, indicative of microbial, low-C2H6 fossil, and high-C2H6 fossil sources, respectively, emerged in observations over the emissions source region of the Barnett Shale. Ethane-to-methane correlations were used in conjunction with C2H6 and CH4 fluxes to quantify the fraction of CH4 emissions derived from fossil and microbial sources. On the basis of two analyses, we find 71-85% of the observed methane emissions quantified in the Barnett Shale are derived from fossil sources. The average ethane flux observed from the studied region of the Barnett Shale was 6.6 ± 0.2 × 10(3) kg hr(-1) and consistent across six days in spring and fall of 2013.

New reactions and reagents that allow for multiple bond-forming events per synthetic operation are required to achieve structural complexity and thus value with step-, time-, cost-, and waste-economy. Here we report a new class of reagents that function like tetramethyleneethane (TME), allowing for back-to-back [4 + 2] cycloadditions, thereby amplifying the complexity-increasing benefits of Diels-Alder and metal-catalyzed cycloadditions. The parent recursive reagent, 2,3-dimethylene-4-trimethylsilylbutan-1-ol (DMTB), is readily available from the metathesis of ethylene and THP-protected 4-trimethylsilylbutyn-1-ol. DMTB and related reagents engage diverse dienophiles in an initial Diels-Alder or metal-catalyzed [4 + 2] cycloaddition, triggering a subsequent vinylogous Peterson elimination that recursively generates a new diene for a second cycloaddition. Overall, this multicomponent catalytic cascade produces in one operation carbo- and heterobicyclic building blocks for the synthesis of a variety of natural products, therapeutic leads, imaging agents, and materials. Its application to the three step synthesis of a new solvatochromic fluorophore, N-ethyl(6-N,N-dimethylaminoanthracene-2,3-dicarboximide) (6-DMA), and the photophysical characterization of this fluorophore are described.

The catalytic properties of the metal-organic framework Fe2(dobdc), containing open Fe(II) sites, include hydroxylation of phenol by pure Fe2(dobdc) and hydroxylation of ethane by its magnesium-diluted analogue, Fe0.1Mg1.9(dobdc). In earlier work, the latter reaction was proposed to occur through a redox mechanism involving the generation of an iron(IV)-oxo species, which is an intermediate that is also observed or postulated (depending on the case) in some heme and nonheme enzymes and their model complexes. In the present work, we present a detailed mechanism by which the catalytic material, Fe0.1Mg1.9(dobdc), activates the strong C-H bonds of ethane. Kohn-Sham density functional and multireference wave function calculations have been performed to characterize the electronic structure of key species. We show that the catalytic nonheme-Fe hydroxylation of the strong C-H bond of ethane proceeds by a quintet single-state σ-attack pathway after the formation of highly reactive iron-oxo intermediate. The mechanistic pathway involves three key transition states, with the highest activation barrier for the transfer of oxygen from N2O to the Fe(II) center. The uncatalyzed reaction, where nitrous oxide directly oxidizes ethane to ethanol is found to have an activation barrier of 280 kJ/mol, in contrast to 82 kJ/mol for the slowest step in the iron(IV)-oxo catalytic mechanism. The energetics of the C-H bond activation steps of ethane and methane are also compared. Dehydrogenation and dissociation pathways that can compete with the formation of ethanol were shown to involve higher barriers than the hydroxylation pathway.

The 3+1 condensation of symmetrical 16-Selena/telluratripyrranes with symmetrical selenophene-2,5-diols/tellurophene-2,5-diols in the presence of BF3-etheratre or BF3-methanol followed by oxidation with DDQ gave 5,10-porphodimethenes, whereas the process with unsymmetrical selenophene-2,5-diols/tellurophene-2,5-diols gave 5-porphomethenes. In addition, the reaction of unsymmetrical 16-Selena/telluratripyrranes with symmetrical selenophene-2,5-diols/tellurophene-2,5-diols gave the corresponding porphotrimethenes, whereas the process with unsymmetrical selenophene-2,5-diols/tellurophene-2,5-diols gave the 5,15-porphodimethenes. The structures of different products were characterized by IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR, (1)H-(1)H COSY, CHN analysis, and mass spectrometry. The binding of mercury with the calix[4]phyrins mentioned above had been observed in the decreasing order of porphodimethenesporphomethenesporphotrimethenes by UV-vis and (1)H NMR spectroscopy.

Results of mobile ground-based atmospheric measurements conducted during the Barnett Shale Coordinated Campaign in spring and fall of 2013 are presented. Methane and ethane are continuously measured downwind of facilities such as natural gas processing plants, compressor stations, and production well pads. Gaussian dispersion simulations of these methane plumes, using an iterative forward plume dispersion algorithm, are used to estimate both the source location and the emission magnitude. The distribution of emitters is peaked in the 0-5 kg/h range, with a significant tail. The ethane/methane molar enhancement ratio for this same distribution is investigated, showing a peak at ∼1.5% and a broad distribution between ∼4% and ∼17%. The regional distributions of source emissions and ethane/methane enhancement ratios are examined: the largest methane emissions appear between Fort Worth and Dallas, while the highest ethane/methane enhancement ratios occur for plumes observed in the northwestern potion of the region. Individual facilities, focusing on large emitters, are further analyzed by constraining the source location.

A new organocatalytic transfer hydrogenation strategy for the asymmetric synthesis of 1,1-diarylethanes is described. Under mild conditions, a range of 1,1-diarylethanes substituted with an o-hydroxyphenyl or indole unit could be obtained with excellent efficiency and enantioselectivity. We also extended the protocol to an unprecedented asymmetric hydroarylation of 1,1-diarylalkenes with indoles for the synthesis of a range of highly enantioenriched 1,1,1-triarylethanes bearing acyclic all-carbon quaternary stereocenters. These diaryl- and triarylethanes exhibit impressive cytotoxicity against a number of human cancer cell lines. Preliminary mechanistic studies combined with DFT calculations provided important insight into the reaction mechanism.

A projected hybrid orbital (PHO) method was described to model the covalent boundary in a hybrid quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical (QM/MM) system. The PHO approach can be used in ab initio wave function theory and in density functional theory with any basis set without introducing system-dependent parameters. In this method, a secondary basis set on the boundary atom is introduced to formulate a set of hybrid atomic orbtials. The primary basis set on the boundary atom used for the QM subsystem is projected onto the secondary basis to yield a representation that provides a good approximation to the electron-withdrawing power of the primary basis set to balance electronic interactions between QM and MM subsystems. The PHO method has been tested on a range of molecules and properties. Comparison with results obtained from QM calculations on the entire system shows that the present PHO method is a robust and balanced QM/MM scheme that preserves the structural and electronic properties of the QM region.

The amount of methane emissions released by the natural gas (NG) industry is a critical and uncertain value for various industry and policy decisions, such as for determining the climate implications of using NG over coal. Previous studies have estimated fugitive emissions rates (FER)--the fraction of produced NG (mainly methane and ethane) escaped to the atmosphere--between 1 and 9%. Most of these studies rely on few and outdated measurements, and some may represent only temporal/regional NG industry snapshots. This study estimates NG industry representative FER using global atmospheric methane and ethane measurements over three decades, and literature ranges of (i) tracer gas atmospheric lifetimes, (ii) non-NG source estimates, and (iii) fossil fuel fugitive gas hydrocarbon compositions. The modeling suggests an upper bound global average FER of 5% during 2006-2011, and a most likely FER of 2-4% since 2000, trending downward. These results do not account for highly uncertain natural hydrocarbon seepage, which could lower the FER. Further emissions reductions by the NG industry may be needed to ensure climate benefits over coal during the next few decades.

We report that N-(trimethylsilyl)imines serve in the Bis(AMidine)-catalyzed addition of bromonitromethane with a high degree of enantioselection. This allows for the production of a range of protected α-bromo nitroalkane donors (including Fmoc) for use in Umpolung Amide Synthesis (UmAS). Hence, peptide homologation with nonnatural aryl glycine amino acids is achieved in three steps from aromatic aldehydes, which are plentiful and inexpensive. Epimerization during the homologation step is circumvented by avoiding an α-amino acid intermediate.

The environmental implications of carbon nanomaterials have received much attention. Nonetheless, little is known about how carbon nanomaterials might affect the abiotic transformation of organic contaminants in aquatic environments. In this study, we observed that three functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-including a hydroxylated MWCNT (OH-MWCNT), a carboxylated MWCNT (COOH-MWCNT), and an aminated MWCNT (NH2-MWCNT)-all had strong catalytic effects on the dehydrochlorination of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TeCA) at three different pH (7, 8, and 9); notably, the most significant effects (up to 130% increase in reaction rate) were observed at pH 7, at which reaction kinetics was very slow in the absence of MWCNT. The primary mechanism was that the -NH2 group and the deprotonated -COOH and -OH groups serve as bases to catalyze the reaction. Modeling results indicate that at any given pH the transformation kinetic constants of MWCNT-adsorbed TeCA were up to 2 orders of magnitude greater than the respective kinetic constant of dissolved TeCA. The overall catalytic effects of the MWCNTs depended both on the basicity of the surface functionalities of MWCNT and on the adsorption affinities of MWCNT for TeCA. Interestingly, Suwannee River humic acid-selected as a model dissolved organic matter-had negligible effects on the dehydrochlorination kinetics, even though it is rich in surface O-functionalities. An important environmental implication is that carbon nanotubes released into the environment might significantly affect the fate of chlorinated solvents.

Establishing precise structure-activity relationships is important for the optimization of synthetic carriers for gene delivery. Sequence-defined oligomers with branched or linear shapes were synthesized to investigate the influence of topology on their biophysical properties and biological performance. Comb-like structures were synthesized consisting of an oligolysine peptide backbone modified at the ε-amino groups with four different artificial oligoamino acids, succinyl-diethylene triamine (Sdt), succinyl-triethylene tetramine (Stt), succinyl-tetraethylene pentamine (Stp), and succinyl-pentaethylene hexamine (Sph). Optionally the amino acids histidine and alanine were inserted into the oligolysine backbone to assess a possible buffer or spacer effect. After the evaluation of biophysical properties, the best performing oligomers, containing the Stp or Sph building blocks, were compared to corresponding linear oligomers where Stp or Sph are directly integrated into the linear oligolysine row. Clear differences between the comb and linear carriers were observed in the comparison of properties such as DNA complexation ability, buffer capacity, cellular association and internalization, and gene transfer. For the Stp containing structures, the comb topology mediated an increased buffer capacity at endosomal pH. For the Sph containing structures, in sharp contrast, the linear topology displayed advantageous endosomal buffering. Interestingly, for both Stp and Sph carriers, the comb in comparison to the linear topologies mediated a higher overall cellular uptake despite a lower cell association. For Stp combs, the combined advantage in both buffering and cellular uptake resulted in a strong (10- to100-fold) increase in DNA transfection efficiency. In the case of Sph carriers, comb topology mediated only moderately (maximum 4-fold) enhanced gene transfer over the linear topology.

A new one-pot protocol has been developed for the synthesis of benzophenazine, quinoxaline, and phenoxazine derivatives by the reaction of benzoxepine-4-carboxylates with benzene-1,2-diamines, ethane-1,2-diamine, and 2-aminophenols in the presence of Bi(OTf)3 (5 mol %) under mild conditions in very good yields. The present protocol opens a new way for C-C, C-N, and C-O bond-formation reactions in a single-step process. The structural assignment was confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Bond rotations are common and important in molecular studies such as drug design and enzymatic reactions. Steric hindrance and hyperconjugation are often borrowed to justify the origin of bond rotation barriers. However, there exists no consensus, even for as simple molecules as ethane, on which the effect is more significant. Here, we show that a unified view is possible. To that end, we employ two energy partition schemes from density functional theory to investigate the flexible rotation barrier of six molecules with one rotatable dihedral angle: ethane, methylamine, methanol, hydrazine, hydroxylamine, and hydrogen peroxide. Our results suggest that, even though steric and quantum effects play indispensable roles, it is the electrostatic interaction that governs the barrier height of all these different types of systems. This work not only consolidates earlier views about the role of steric and quantum effects, it also provides new insights about the origin and nature of the bond rotation barrier, which should be applicable to many different types of chemical bonds.

We have developed a nickel-catalyzed cross coupling of benzylic ammonium triflates with aryl boronic acids to afford diarylmethanes and diarylethanes. This reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions and with exceptional functional group tolerance. Further, it transforms branched benzylic ammonium salts to diarylethanes with excellent chirality transfer, offering a new strategy for the synthesis of highly enantioenriched diarylethanes from readily available chiral benzylic amines.

A central carbon–carbon (C–C) σ bond dissociation of polyphenylethane radical anions (Ph(n)E•-, n = 3–6), mesolysis, was investigated by the transient absorption measurement during pulse radiolysis of Ph(n)E in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran. The charge resonance (CR) band of 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethane radical anion (1,1,2,2-Ph4E•-) was observed in the near-infrared region immediately after an electron pulse to be attributed to the intramolecular dimer radical anion. The CR band disappeared with simultaneous formation of two absorption bands at 330 and 460 nm corresponding to diphenylmethyl radical and diphenylmethyl anion, respectively, indicating the occurrence of the mesolysis in 1,1,2,2-Ph4E•-. During pulse radiolysis of 1,1,1,2,2,2-hexaphenylethane (Ph6E), an absorption band of triphenylmethyl radical was observed at 340 nm immediately after an electron pulse. It is suggested that one electron attachment to Ph6E is followed by the subsequent rapid C–C σ bond dissociation. Formation of intramolecular dimer radical anions in Ph(n)E•- such as 1,1,2-triphenylethane (Ph3E), 1,1,1,2-tetraphenylethane (1,1,1,2-Ph4E), and 1,1,1,2,2-pentaphenylethane (Ph5E) was also studied together with the subsequent mesolysis. The mesolysis of Ph(n)E•- is discussed in terms of charge delocalization in the intramolecular dimer radical anions and the central C–C σ bond as well as bond dissociation energy of the central C–C σ bond of Ph(n)E•-.

An intramolecular Pauson-Khand type cycloaddition reaction of ene-vinylidenecyclopropanes with carbon monoxide has been established by using [Rh(COD)Cl](2) as the catalyst. The reaction was found to be highly efficient in solvents of 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane to give excellent yields of 90-99%. The reaction provides easy access to a series of fused 6,5-ring structures containing spiro-cyclopropane units that are useful for drug design and development. A mechanism of this cycloaddition process has been proposed accounting for structures of resulting products that were unambiguously assigned by X-ray diffractional analysis.

Site isolation of V active sites has been often correlated to catalytic performance for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane to propylene. In particular, catalyst selectivity seems favored by high V dispersion. The latter property is hardly attainable by traditional preparation methods, especially by impregnation except at very low V loading, which however may lead to a too high surface exposure of the acidic sites of the support. In this paper, the effect of the preparation procedure on catalyst properties has been investigated, particularly considering catalysts prepared by flame pyrolysis, a synthesis method which induced a very high V dispersion also at relatively high vanadium loading. Transmission electron microscopy also allowed us to assess V oxide dispersion depending on both the support type and the preparation method. Furthermore, the local structure of the V active sites has been deeply investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, allowing us to propose a possible structure of the active sites. The average oxidation state of surface V species was then studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), showing a role of V oxidation state on catalyst selectivity. The catalytic performance has been interpreted on the basis of V species and catalyst acidity (as measured by IR spectroscopy), another fundamental parameter that in turn results to be correlated with V dispersion on different supports. More selective catalysts were indeed characterized by the presence of weaker Brønsted acidic sites.

A novel bifunctional bis(hemiacetal ester) chain transfer agent (CTA), 1,2-bis[1-(4-cyano-4-methyl-1-oxo-4-(phenylcarbonothioylthio)butanoxy)ethoxy] ethane (CMPTBEE), appropriate for the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of methacrylate monomers, was successfully synthesized and used for the preparation of a family of 10 hydrolyzable end-linked polymer (co)networks. The family comprised three methyl methacrylate (MMA) homopolymer networks with different degrees of polymerization, 100, 150, and 200, and seven end-linked amphiphilic polymer conetworks of MMA and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) with a constant overall degree of polymerization equal to 200 but various compositions and architectures. The agreement of the experimentally measured molecular weights with the theoretically expected ones and the low molecular weight dispersities of the linear precursors to the (co)networks indicated successful control of the polymerization. All (co)networks were characterized in terms of their sol fraction and in terms of their degree of swelling in THF. The value of the former was found in the range between 4 and 50%, whereas that of the latter was around 13%. The presence of the hemiacetal ester groups allowed the hydrolysis of the most hydrophilic, DMAEMA-rich conetworks. The resistance to hydrolysis of the other (co)networks could be attributed to the large hydrophobic blocks surrounding and protecting from hydrolysis the hemiacetal ester groups of the CTA residue in the conetworks. © 2012 American Chemical Society. 45 19 7890 7899 Cited By :22

Stereospecific nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of benzylic 2-methoxyethyl ethers are reported for the preparation of enantioenriched 1,1-diarylethanes. The 2-methoxyethyl ether serves as a traceless directing group that accelerates cross-coupling. Chelation of magnesium ions is proposed to activate the benzylic C-O bond for oxidative addition.

A previously known class of porous coordination polymer (PCP) of formula [Cu(bpy-n)(2)(SiF(6))] (bpy-1 = 4,4'-bipyridine; bpy-2 = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene) has been studied to assess its selectivity toward CO(2), CH(4), N(2), and H(2)O. Gas sorption measurements reveal that [Cu(bpy-1)(2)(SiF(6))] exhibits the highest uptake for CO(2) yet seen at 298 K and 1 atm by a PCP that does not contain open metal sites. Significantly, [Cu(bpy-1)(2)(SiF(6))] does not exhibit particularly high uptake under the same conditions for CH(4), N(2), and, H(2)O, presumably because of its lack of open metal sites. Consequently, at 298 K and 1 atm [Cu(bpy-1)(2)(SiF(6))] exhibits a relative uptake of CO(2) over CH(4) of ca. 10.5:1, the highest value experimentally observed in a compound without open metal sites. [Cu(bpy-2)(2)(SiF(6))] exhibits larger pores and surface area than [Cu(bpy-1)(2)(SiF(6))] but retains a high CO(2)/CH(4) relative uptake of ca. 8:1.

The formation of hydrates from a methane–ethane-propane mixture is more complex than with single gases. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high-pressure powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), we have investigated the structural properties of natural gas hydrates crystallized in the presence of kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs), two commercial inhibitors and two biological ice inhibitors, or antifreeze proteins (AFPs). NMR analyses indicated that hydrate cage occupancy was at near saturation for controls and most inhibitor types. Some exceptions were found in systems containing a new commercial KHI (HIW85281) and a recombinant plant AFP, suggesting that these two inhibitors could impact the kinetics of cavity formation. NMR analysis confirmed that the hydrate composition varies during crystal growth by kinetic effects. Strikingly, the coexistence of both structures I (sI) and II (sII) were observed in NMR spectra and PXRD profiles. It is suggested that sI phases may form more readily from liquid water. Real time PXRD monitoring showed that sI hydrates were less stable than sII crystals, and there was a conversion to the stable phase over time. Both commercial KHIs and AFPs had an impact on hydrate metastability, but transient sI PXRD intensity profiles indicated significantly different modes of interaction with the various inhibitors and the natural gas hydrate system.

The primary objective of this study is to develop an improved first-principle-based mechanism that describes the molecular weight growth kinetics observed during ethane pyrolysis. A proper characterization of the kinetics of ethane pyrolysis is a prerequisite for any analysis of hydrocarbon pyrolysis and oxidation. Flow reactor experiments were performed with ~50/50 ethane/nitrogen mixtures with temperatures ranging from 550 to 850 °C at an absolute pressure of ~0.8 atm and a residence time of ~5 s. These conditions result in ethane conversions ranging from virtually no reaction to ~90%. Comparisons of predictions using our original mechanism to these data yielded very satisfactory results in terms of the temperature dependence of ethane conversion and prediction of the major products ethylene and hydrogen. However, there were discrepancies in some of the minor species concentrations that are involved in the molecular weight growth kinetics. We performed a series of CBS-QB3 analyses for the C(3)H(7), C(4)H(7), and C(4)H(9) potential energy surfaces to better characterize the radical addition reactions that lead to molecular weight growth. We also extended a published C(6)H(9) PES to include addition of vinyl to butadiene. The results were then used to calculate pressure-dependent rate constants for the multiple reaction pathways of these addition reactions. Inclusion of the unadjusted rate constants resulting from these analyses in the mechanism significantly improved the description of several of the species involved in molecular weight growth kinetics. We compare the predictions of this improved model to those obtained with a consensus model recently published as well as to ethane steam cracking data. We find that a particularly important reaction is that of vinyl addition to butadiene. Another important observation is that several radical addition reactions are partially equilibrated. Not only does this mean that reliable thermodynamic parameters are essential for an accurate model, but also that the reaction set describing molecular weight growth chemistry must include a final product that is sufficiently stable to shift the equilibrium toward this product despite the decrease in entropy that accompanies molecular weight growth. Another reaction, H addition to olefins, was found to inhibit molecular weight growth by leading to the production of a lower olefin plus methyl radicals.

On the basis of a density-based quantification of the steric effect [Liu, S. B. J. Chem. Phys.2007, 126, 244103], the origin of the internal rotation barrier between the eclipsed and staggered conformers of ethane is systematically investigated in this work from an information-theoretical point of view by using the Fisher information measure in conjugated spaces. Two kinds of computational approaches are considered in this work: adiabatic (with optimal structure) and vertical (with fixed geometry). The analyses are performed systematically by following, in each case, the conformeric path by changing the dihedral angle from 0 to 180° . This is calculated at the HF, MP2, B3LYP, and CCSD(T) levels of theory and with several basis sets. Selected descriptors of the densities are utilized to support the observations. Our results show that in the adiabatic case the eclipsed conformer possesses a larger steric repulsion than the staggered conformer, but in the vertical cases the staggered conformer retains a larger steric repulsion. Our results verify the plausibility for defining and computing the steric effect in the post-Hartree-Fock level of theory according to the scheme proposed by Liu.

[Ag(COD)(2)]PF(6) catalyzes the ring-opening of N-tosylaziridines and -azetidines with alcohols, amines, thiols, and related tethered 1,2-ethane dinucleophiles. Initial rate studies and DFT-based evaluation of stepwise energetics suggest an inverse relationship between the nucleophilic reactivity of a heteroatom donor and its binding affinity to cationic Ag(I).

This contribution studies the decomposition of folpet fungicide under oxidative conditions and compares the product species with those of captan fungicide, which is structurally related to folpet. Toxic products arising from folpet comprised carbon disulfide (highest emission factor of 4.9 mg g(-1) folpet), thiophosgene (14.4), phosgene (34.1), hydrogen cyanide (2.6), tetrachloroethylene (111), hexachloroethane (167), and benzonitrile (4.5). Owing to their related molecular structures, folpet emitted similar products to captan but at different yields, under the same experimental conditions. It appears that the availability of easily abstractable H atoms, in the structure of captan but not in that of folpet, defines the product distribution. In conjunction with the quantum chemical calculations, these experimental measurements afford an enhanced explanation of the formation pathways of hazardous decomposition products of these two structurally related fungicides.

An iron-mediated tandem annulation strategy has been developed for the synthesis of numerous functional indeno[1,2-c]chromenes and 5H-naphtho[1,2-c]chromenes. This work is the first to disclose an iron-mediated method through sequential electrophilic addition of a ketone to an alkyne and annulation tandem reaction. Importantly, a halide is introduced into the products by a ring-opening process among the annulation of alkynylcyclopropanes, which makes the methodology more attractive for organic synthesis.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) represents a promising approach for source zone control, but concerns over its reactive lifetime might limit application. Here, we demonstrate that dithionite (S₂O₄²⁻), a reducing agent for in situ redox manipulation, can restore the reducing capacity of passivated NZVI. Slurries of NZVI were aged in the presence (3 days) and absence (60 days) of dissolved oxygen over a range of pH values (6-8). Upon loss of reactivity toward model pollutants{1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane, hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], nitrobenzene}, aged suspensions were reacted with dithionite, and the composition and reactivity of the dithionite-treated materials were determined. NZVI aging products generally depended on pH and the presence of oxygen, whereas the amount of dithionite influenced the nature and reducing capacity of products generated from reaction with aged NZVI suspensions. Notably, air oxidation at pH ≥ 8 quickly exhausted NZVI reactivity despite preservation of significant Fe(0) in the particle core. Under these conditions, formation of a passive surface layer hindered the complete transformation of NZVI particles into iron(III) oxides, which occurred at lower pH. Reduction of this passive layer by low dithionite concentrations( 1 g/g of NZVI) restored suspension reactivity to levels equal to, and occasionally greater than, that of unaged NZVI. Multiple dithionite additions further improved pollutant removal, allowing at least a 15-fold increase in Cr(VI) removal [∼300 mg of Cr(VI)/g of NZVI] relative to that of as-received NZVI [∼20 mg of Cr(VI)/g of NZVI].

Collisional energy transfer remains an important area of uncertainty in master equation simulations. Quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations were used to examine the energy transfer probability density distribution (energy transfer kernel), which depends on translational temperature, on the nature of the collision partners, and on the initial and final total internal energies and angular momenta: P(E, J; E', J'). For this purpose, model potential energy functions were taken from the literature or were formulated for pyrazine + Ar and for ethane + Ar collisions. For each collision pair, batches of 10(5) trajectories were computed with three selected initial vibrational energies and five selected values for initial total angular momentum. Most trajectories were carried out with relative translational energy distributions at 300 K, but some were carried out at 1000 or 1200 K. In addition, some trajectories were computed for artificially "heavy" ethane, in which the H-atoms were assigned masses of 20 amu. The results were binned according to (ΔE, ΔJ), and a least-squares analysis was carried out by omitting the quasi-elastic trajectories from consideration. By trial-and-error, an empirical function was identified that fitted all 45 batches of trajectories with moderate accuracy. The results reveal significant correlations between initial and final energies and angular momenta. In particular, a strong correlation between ΔE and ΔJ depends on the smallest rotational constant in the excited polyatomic. These results show that the final rotational energy distribution is not independent of the initial distribution, showing that the plausible simplifying assumption described by Smith and Gilbert [Int. J. Chem. Kinet. 1988, 20, 307-329] and extended by Miller, Klippenstein, and Raffy [J. Phys. Chem. A 2002, 106, 4904-4913] is invalid for the systems studied.

Dissociation behavior of methane-ethane mixed gas hydrate coexisting structures I and II at constant temperatures less than 223 K was studied with use of powder X-ray diffraction and solid-state (13)C NMR techniques. The diffraction patterns at temperatures less than 203 K showed both structures I and II simultaneously convert to Ih during the dissociation, but the diffraction pattern at temperatures greater than 208 K showed different dissociation behavior between structures I and II. Although the diffraction peaks from structure II decreased during measurement at constant temperatures greater than 208 K, those from structure I increased at the initial step of dissociation and then disappeared. This anomalous behavior of the methane-ethane mixed gas hydrate coexisting structures I and II was examined by using the (13)C NMR technique. The (13)C NMR spectra revealed that the anomalous behavior results from the formation of ethane-rich structure I. The structure I hydrate formation was associated with the dissociation rate of the initial methane-ethane mixed gas hydrate.

The influence of different solvent environments on the size, shape, and characteristics of surfactant micelles of Pluronic F127 and CTAB was investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). SANS experiments were undertaken on dilute micellar surfactant solutions of F127 and CTAB that between them were exposed to liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide, liquid propane, ethane, and heptane under various pressures and temperatures. Swelling of the surfactant micelles could be directly related to the solubility of the solvents within the micelles, especially within their cores. Carbon dioxide produced the largest swelling of the Pluronic F127 micelles, compared to propane and ethane, which mirrors the solubility of the gases in the PPO core of the micelles. Conversely, the extent of swelling of the cores of CTAB micelles was greater with propane compared to carbon dioxide, which again relates to the solubility of the solvents in the alkane core of the CTAB micelles.

The Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance (FT-IR-ATR) technique has been used to detect and quantify the following volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water: 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane, 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, styrene, and tetrachloroethylene, among which the first three compounds were investigated at parts per million levels for the first time. Enhancement of the detection was made by (1) coating the ATR crystal with a hydrophobic polymer membrane, (2) optimizing the flow rate of the sample solution, (3) varying polymer membrane thickness, and (4) increasing the number of reflection bounces within the ATR crystal. Our flow rate optimization confirmed a previous finding that turbulent flow is more favorable than laminar flow in detecting the VOCs in water. However, decreases of ATR signal intensity were observed at very high turbulency due to analytes flowing too quickly through and exiting the ATR cell to be adsorbed onto the polymer membrane. The optimal membrane thickness was found to be associated with the maximum overlap between the IR evanescent wave penetration depth and the analyte diffusion depth. Consequently, there is no universal optimal flow rate and optimal polymer membrane thickness for detection of all VOCs. Doubling the number of IR reflection bounces within the ATR crystal enhanced both detection and sensitivity by about a factor of 2. Finally, it was observed that the detection limit concentrations decrease with the water solubility of the VOCs.

Halonitromethanes (HNMs) are byproducts formed through ozonation and chlorine/ chloramine disinfection processes in drinking waters that contain dissolved organic matter and bromide ions. These species occur at low concentration but have been determined to have high cytotoxicity and mutagenicity and therefore may represent a human health hazard. In this study, we have investigated the chemistry involved in the mineralization of HNMs to nonhazardous inorganic products through the application of advanced oxidation and reduction processes. We have combined measured absolute reaction rate constants for the reactions of chloronitromethane, bromonitromethane, and dichloronitromethane with the hydroxyl radical and the hydrated electron with a kinetic computer model in an attempt to elucidate the reaction pathways of these HNMs. The results are compared to measurements of stable products resulting from steady-state (60)Co gamma-irradiations of the same compounds. The model predicted the decomposition of the parent compounds and ingrowth of chloride and bromide ions with excellent accuracy, but the prediction of the total nitrate ion concentration was slightly in error, reflecting the complexity of nitrogen oxide species reactions in irradiated solution.

The kinetics of CH(4)-C(2)H(6) replacement in gas hydrates has been studied by in situ neutron diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Deuterated ethane structure type I (C(2)H(6) sI) hydrates were transformed in a closed volume into methane-ethane mixed structure type II (CH(4)-C(2)H(6) sII) hydrates at 5 MPa and various temperatures in the vicinity of 0 degrees C while followed by time-resolved neutron powder diffraction on D20 at ILL, Grenoble. The role of available surface area of the sI starting material on the formation kinetics of sII hydrates was studied. Ex situ Raman spectroscopic investigations were carried out to crosscheck the gas composition and the distribution of the gas species over the cages as a function of structure type and compared to the in situ neutron results. Raman micromapping on single hydrate grains showed compositional and structural gradients between the surface and core of the transformed hydrates. Moreover, the observed methane-ethane ratio is very far from the one expected for a formation from a constantly equilibrated gas phase. The results also prove that gas replacement in CH(4)-C(2)H(6) hydrates is a regrowth process involving the nucleation of new crystallites commencing at the surface of the parent C(2)H(6) sI hydrate with a progressively shrinking core of unreacted material. The time-resolved neutron diffraction results clearly indicate an increasing diffusion limitation of the exchange process. This diffusion limitation leads to a progressive slowing down of the exchange reaction and is likely to be responsible for the incomplete exchange of the gases.

The kinetics of the reactions of atomic chlorine with ethane and propane have been studied in a continuous supersonic flow reactor over the range 48 Kor = Tor = 167 K. Chlorine atoms were produced by microwave discharge upstream of the Laval nozzle and were probed in the vacuum ultraviolet wavelength range around 138 nm by resonance fluorescence. The reaction of Cl with ethane has been found to exhibit a positive temperature dependence, with a rate coefficient decreasing from (4.3 +/- 0.6) x 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) at 167 K to (2.9 +/- 0.3) x 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) at 48 K and deviates from true Arrhenius behavior below 120 K. In contrast, the rate coefficient for the reaction of Cl with propane has been found to have a constant value of (1.4 +/- 0.2) x 10(-10) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) over the same temperature range. The expressed uncertainties are the combined statistical (a single standard deviation from the mean) and systematic (estimated at 10%) uncertainties.

The flavoenzyme nitroalkane oxidase is a member of the acyl-CoA dehydrogenase superfamily. Nitroalkane oxidase catalyzes the oxidation of neutral nitroalkanes to nitrite and the corresponding aldehydes or ketones. Crystal structures to 2.2 A resolution or better of enzyme complexes with bound substrates and of a trapped substrate-flavin adduct are described. The D402N enzyme has no detectable activity with neutral nitroalkanes [Valley, M. P., and Fitzpatrick, P. F. (2003) J. Am. Chem. Soc. 125, 8738-8739]. The structure of the D402N enzyme crystallized in the presence of 1-nitrohexane or 1-nitrooctane shows the presence of the substrate in the binding site. The aliphatic chain of the substrate extends into a tunnel leading to the enzyme surface. The oxygens of the substrate nitro group interact both with amino acid residues and with the 2'-hydroxyl of the FAD. When nitroalkane oxidase oxidizes nitroalkanes in the presence of cyanide, an electrophilic flavin imine intermediate can be trapped [Valley, M. P., Tichy, S. E., and Fitzpatrick, P. F. (2005) J. Am. Chem. Soc. 127, 2062-2066]. The structure of the enzyme trapped with cyanide during oxidation of 1-nitrohexane shows the presence of the modified flavin. A continuous hydrogen bond network connects the nitrogen of the CN-hexyl-FAD through the FAD 2'-hydroxyl to a chain of water molecules extending to the protein surface. Together, our complementary approaches provide strong evidence that the flavin cofactor is in the appropriate oxidation state and correlates well with the putative intermediate state observed within each of the crystal structures. Consequently, these results provide important structural descriptions of several steps along the nitroalkane oxidase reaction cycle.

The aim of this study was to use supercritical ethane to selectively disperse alkanethiol-stabilized gold nanoparticles of one size from a polydisperse sample in order to recover a monodisperse fraction of the nanoparticles. A disperse sample of metal nanoparticles with diameters in the range of 1-5 nm was prepared using established techniques then further purified by Soxhlet extraction. The purified sample was subjected to supercritical ethane at a temperature of 318 K in the pressure range 50-276 bar. Particles were characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, TEM, and MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy. The results show that with increasing pressure the dispersibility of the nanoparticles increases, this effect is most pronounced for smaller nanoparticles. At the highest pressure investigated a sample of the particles was effectively stripped of all the smaller particles leaving a monodisperse sample. The relationship between dispersibility and supercritical fluid density for two different size samples of alkanethiol-stabilized gold nanoparticles was considered using the Chrastil chemical equilibrium model.

Superoxide is unreactive in deionized water, but aqueous systems containing added solvents, including H2O2 at >100 mM, show significantly increased reactivity of superoxide with oxidized organic compounds such as highly chlorinated aliphatics. The potential for solid surfaces to similarly increase the reactivity of superoxide in water was investigated. Heterogeneous birnessite (gamma-MnO2)-catalyzed decomposition of H2O2 promoted the degradation of the superoxide probe hexachloroethane (HCA) at H202 concentrations as low as 7.5 mM, while no measurable HCA degradation was found in parallel homogeneous iron(III)-EDTA-H2O2 systems at H2O2 concentrations
