We have prepared and characterized two diradicaloid systems 5a and 5b that originated from the oxidation of a 1,7-(4-(2,6-di- tert -butyl)phenol)-substituted aza-BODIPY core. The aza-BODIPY diradicaloids were characterized by a large array of experimental and computational methods. The diamagnetic closed-shell state was postulated as the ground state in solution and a solid-state with the substantial thermal population originating from both open-shell diradical and open-shell triplet states observed at room temperature. Transient absorption spectroscopy indicates fast (<10 ps) excited state deactivation pathways associated with the target compounds' diradical character in solution at room temperature. Variable-temperature 1 H NMR spectra indicate the solvent dependency of the diradical character in 5a and 5b . The diradicaloids could be stepwise reduced to the mixed-valence radical-anion and dianion states upon consequent single-electron reductions. Similarly, deprotonated 1,7-(4-(2,6-di- tert -butyl)phenol)-substituted aza-BODIPYs can be oxidized to the diradicaloid form. Both mixed-valence and dianionic forms exhibit an intense absorption in the NIR region. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations were used to explain the transformations in the UV-Vis-NIR spectra of all target compounds.

Palladium(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate (Pd(Hfacac) 2 ) is known to form adducts of bases, such as lutidine (2,6-dimethylpyridine). When treated with approximately 3 equiv of lutidine, Pd(Hfacac) 2 yields a 1:1 complex as reported in the literature, Pd( O , O -Hfacac)( C -Hfacac)(lutidine), 1 . However, when the amount of excess lutidine is increased, a new complex, 2 , is formed. A single-crystal X-ray structure of 2 proves it is a rare example of a dimeric palladium complex containing two Pd(Hfacac)(lutidine) fragments bridged by a dianionic trifluoroacetonate ligand, μ-CHC(O)CF 3 . The formation of 2 is accompanied by a white precipitate determined to be a mixture of trans -Pd(O 2 CCF 3 ) 2 (lutidine) 2 ( 3 ), confirming the fate of the missing trifluoroacetate fragment from the cleavage of the Hfacac ligand, and [lutidinium][Hfacac] ( 4 ). Subsequent experiments revealed the determinative role that water played in this reaction. A comprehensive field- and temperature-dependent examination of nuclear magnetic resonance paramagnetic relaxation enhancements (PREs) for the constitutive protons of [Co(Tpm) 2 ][BF 4 ] 2 is presented. Data for an apically substituted derivative clearly establish that bis-Tpm complexes of Co(II) undergo Jahn-Teller dynamics about the molecular threefold axis. PREs from the parent Tpm complex were used to numerically extract the electron relaxation times ( T 1e ). The Tpm complex showed field-dependent behavior, with an approximately 40% higher activation barrier than the related trispyrazolylborate (Tp) complex, based on fits to the T 1e vs T , B 0 data. Analysis of the field-dependent line widths revealed a surprisingly large contribution from susceptibility (Curie) relaxation (20-35% at the highest field), and a molecular radius (9.5 Å) that is consistent with a tightly associated counterion slowing rotation in solution. Density functional theory showed a shared vibration that is consistent with the Jahn-Teller and appears proportionately higher in energy in [Co(Tpm) 2 ] 2+ . Complete active-space self-consistent field calculations support ascribing electron relaxation to enhanced mixing of the two E g orbital sets that accompanies the tetragonal distortion and the differences in electron correlation times to the higher Jahn-Teller activation barrier in [Co(Tpm) 2 ] 2+ .

We report a systematic investigation of a series of Ag(II) and Ag(III) complexes of porphyrins and their analogues using UV-vis magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies and theoretical calculations. Ag(II) and Ag(III) octaethyl- and tetraarylporphyrins show the usual sign sequence in the Q-band region (i.e., negative to positive intensities with increasing energy) of their MCD spectra, indicative of the ΔHOMO > ΔLUMO relationship (ΔHOMO is the energy difference between Michl's a and s orbitals, and ΔLUMO is the energy difference between Michl's -a and - s pair of MOs). In contrast, Ag(II) complexes of β,β'-pyrrole-modified porphyrins (with an effective chlorin-type π-system) and Ag(III) corroles have sign reverse features in the MCD spectra of their Q-band region (ΔHOMO < ΔLUMO relationships). The Ag(III) complex of N-confused porphyrin shows the ΔHOMO > ΔLUMO relationship in the neutral state and the ΔHOMO < ΔLUMO relationship in the protonated form.

The reduction of iron(II) phthalocyanine (Pc(2-)Fe II ) or its bisaxially coordinated complexes results in the formation of the purple/red [PcFe] - , [PcFeL] - , and [PcFeX] 2- (L is neutral and X is anionic ligand) species. The X-ray structure of the [K(DME) 4 ][PcFe] complex exhibits a square-planar [PcFe] - anion. 1 H NMR spectra of the reduced species have one or two phthalocyanine broad peaks between 15 and 17 ppm. Solution magnetic moments are consistent with the presence of a single unpaired electron. A solid-state Mössbauer spectrum of [K(DME) 4 ][PcFe] is consistent with an early report [Taube, R. Pure Appl. Chem. 1974, 38, 427-438]. The solid-state EPR spectrum of the [PcFe] - anion is close to that recorded by Konarev et al. [ Dalton Trans. 2012, 41, 13841-13847]. Solution EPR spectra of reduced species have axial symmetry ( g ⊥ ∼ 2.08-2.17 and g || ∼ 1.95-1.96) and correlate well with spectra reported by Lever and Wilshire in 1978 [ Inorg. Chem. 1978, 17, 1145-1151]. The UV-vis spectra of pentacoordinated [PcFeL] - and [PcFeX] 2- anions consist of the characteristic bands around 810, 690, and 515 nm. These bands correlate well with the set of MCD pseudo A -terms and resemble transitions in the [Pc(3-)M] - and [Pc(3-)ML] - compounds. The UV-vis and MCD spectra of [PcFeL] - and [PcFeX] 2- complexes are in stark contrast to the crystallographically characterized reference [Pc(2-)Co I ] - anion, which is EPR silent, has a regular diamagnetic 1 H NMR spectrum, and has an intense Q-band at 699 nm, which correlates well with the strong MCD A -term. The DFT and TDDFT calculations are suggestive of the iron(II) center in a (d xy ) 2 (d xz , yz ) 3 (d z 2 ) 1 ( s = 1) electronic configuration that is antiferromagnetically coupled with the one-electron-reduced Pc(3-) ligand (i.e., [Pc(3-)Fe II ] - , [Pc(3-)Fe II L] - , and [Pc(3-)Fe II X] 2- ). The calculated EPR, Mössbauer, and UV-vis spectra of [PcFe] - , [PcFeL] - , and [PcFeX] 2- complexes are in excellent agreement with the experimental data, thus resolving the controversy between axial s = 1/2 like EPR and Pc(3-)-like UV-vis spectra of these compounds.

We have prepared a series of complexes of the type [Ir III (ppy) 2 (L] n + complexes ( 1-4 ), where ppy is a substituted 2-phenylpyridine and L is a chelating phosphine thioether ligand. The parent complex ( 1 ) comprises an unsubstituted phenylpyridine ligand, whereas complex 2 contains a nitro substituent on the pyridine ring, complex 3 features a diphenylamine group on the phenyl ring, and 4 has both nitro and diphenylamine groups. Crystallographic, 1 H NMR, and elemental analysis data are consistent with each of the chemical formulae. DFT (density functional theory) computational results show a complicated electronic structure with contributions from Ir, ppy, and the PS ligand. Ultrafast pump-probe data show strong contributions from the phenylpyridine moieties as well as strong panchromatic excited state absorption transitions. The data show that nitro and/or diphenylamine substituents dominate the spectroscopy of this series of compounds.

Herein we present two new ferrocene compounds Fc3 and Fc4 with, respectively, propyl and butyl zwitterionic side chains. These compounds are highly soluble in water (0.66 M for Fc3 and 2.01 M for Fc4 ). When paired with anthraquinone-2,7-disulfonate as the anolyte, these zwitterionic ferrocenes exhibit excellent performance under neutral aqueous conditions. Voltage and energy efficiencies were ca. 88%, and the Coulombic efficiency was over 99% for both high-concentration redox flow batteries. We observed a difference in stability between the lengths of the zwitterionic chains, with Fc4 showing higher stability than Fc3 , and the capacity decreased by ∼5% at the end of 20 cycles (∼1% per day). Density functional theory calculations revealed striking differences in the conformational properties between Fc3 and Fc4 , with Fc4 retaining a linear structure of the side chain in solution, while Fc3 favored both linear and curved geometries.

1 H NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the conformational analysis of ortho -phenylene foldamers in solution. However, as o -phenylenes are integrated into ever more complex systems, we are reaching the limits of what can be analyzed by 1 H- and 13 C-based NMR techniques. Here, we explore fluorine labeling of o -phenylene oligomers for analysis by 19 F NMR spectroscopy. Two series of fluorinated oligomers have been synthesized. Optimization of monomers for Suzuki coupling enables an efficient stepwise oligomer synthesis. The oligomers all adopt well-folded geometries in solution, as determined by 1 H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. 19 F NMR experiments complement these methods well. The resolved singlets of one-dimensional 19 F{ 1 H} spectra are very useful for determining relative conformer populations. The additional information from two-dimensional 19 F NMR spectra is also clearly valuable when making 1 H assignments. The comparison of 19 F isotropic shielding predictions to experimental chemical shifts is not, however, currently sufficient by itself to establish o -phenylene geometries.

A series of photochromic complexes with general formulas of [Ru(bpy) 2 (NHC-SR)] 2+ and [Ru(bpy) 2 (NHC-S(O)R)] 2+ were prepared and investigated by X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy {where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine and NHC-SR and NHC-S(O)R are chelating thioether (-SR) and chelating sulfoxide [-S(O)R] N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands}. The only differences between these complexes are the nature of the R group on the sulfur (Me vs Ph), the identity of the carbene (imidazole vs benzimidazole), and the number of linker atoms in the chelate (CH 2 vs C 2 H 4 ). A total of 13 structures are presented {four [Ru(bpy) 2 (NHC-SR)] 2+ complexes, four [Ru(bpy) 2 (NHC-S(O)R)] 2+ complexes, and five uncomplexed ligands}, and these reveal the expected coordination geometry as predicted from other spectroscopy data. The data do not provide insight into the photochemical reactivity of these compounds. These carbene ligands do impart stability with respect to ground state and excited state ligand substitution reactions. Bulk photolysis reveals that these complexes undergo efficient S → O isomerization, with quantum yields ranging from 0.24 to 0.87. The excited state reaction occurs with a time constant ranging from 570 ps to 1.9 ns. Electrochemical studies reveal an electron transfer-triggered isomerization, and voltammograms are consistent with an ECEC (electrochemical-chemical electrochemical-chemical) reaction mechanism. The carbene facilitates an unusually slow S → O isomerization and an unusally fast O → S isomerization. Temperature studies reveal a small and negative entropy of activation for the O → S isomerization, suggesting an associative transition state in which the sulfoxide simply slides along the S-O bond during isomerization. Ultrafast studies provide evidence of an active role of the carbene in the excited state dynamics of these complexes.

An organometallic complex that mimics an amino acid, also known as an amino acid isostere, can be synthesized from a functionalized bipyridine ligand and a fac -[Re(CO) 3 ] + center. The reaction of an achiral ligand and metal results in a racemic mixture of chiral-at-metal complexes. These metal species have amine and carboxy termini, a side chain type unit that can be varied, as well as the chiral metal that is analogous to the α carbon of an amino acid. The racemic mixtures can be separated into enantiomers by chiral chromatography, and the metal complexes can be incorporated into peptides by using solid-phase peptide synthesis.

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are scalable devices that employ solution-based redox active components for scalable energy storage. To maximize energy density, new highly soluble catholytes and anolytes need to be synthesized and evaluated for their electrochemical performance. To that end, we synthesized a series of imidazolium ferrocene bis(sulfonate) salts as highly soluble catholytes for RFB applications. Six salts with differing alkyl chain lengths on the imidazolium cation were synthesized, characterized, and electrochemically analyzed. While aqueous solubility was significantly improved, the reactivity of the imidazolium cation and the increased viscosities of the salt solutions in water (which increase with increasing imidazolium chain length) limit the applicability of these materials to RFB design.

The reaction of diiminoisoindoline and iminoxoisoindoline with aminoazoles results in the formation of bidentate chelates that can be considered a semihemiporphyrazine. These chelates react with BF 3 to produce fluorescent compounds that are structurally analogous to the BODIPY dyes. These difluoroboron semihemiporphyrazines (BOSHPYs) aggregate, and the type of aggregation (H or J) is determined by a single atom at the periphery of the ligand (O or N). Notably, the imine terminated compounds remain fluorescent upon aggregation.

The direct borylation of two bis(pyrazolylimino)isoindoline chelates with BF 3 and base under dry conditions results in the formation of two boron adducts. These are ring-contracted analogs of biliazine and can be considered as subbiliazines, as they have bowl-shaped structures similar to subphthalocyanine. Additionally, a new iminooxoisoindoline BF 2 complex was made from hydrolysis of the free base in the presence ofBF 3 . The electronic structures of the free bases and subbiliazines were probed by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) methods.

Though numerous applications require degradable polymers, there are surprisingly few polymer systems that combine superior stability and controllable degradability. Particularly, the degradability of a conventional degradable polymer is typically enabled by cleavable groups on the backbone, which can be attacked by stimuli in ambient conditions, causing undesirable material deterioration. Here we report a general strategy to overcome this issue: "locking" the degradability during handling and use of the polymers and "unlocking" it when degradation is needed. This strategy is demonstrated with a cyclobutane-fused lactone (CBL) polymer. The cyclobutane keeps polymer backbone intact under conditions that hydrolyze the lactone and allows the ester group to be recovered when undesirable hydrolysis occurs. When backbone degradation is needed, the degradability can be unlocked by mechanochemical activation that converts the polyCBL into a linear polyester. The rare combination of two intrinsically conflicting properties, i.e., backbone stability and accessible degradability, can make this polymer a potential option for new sustainable materials.

Synthesis of 1,11-dithia-4,8-diazacyclotetradecane ( L1 ), a constitutional isomer of the macrocyclic [14]aneN 2 S 2 series, is accompanied with reaction and method optimization. Chelation of L1 with copper(II) provided assessment of lattice packing, ring contortion, and evidence of conformational fluxionality in solution through two unique crystal structures: L1Cu(ClO4) 2 and [(L1Cu) 2 μ-Cl](ClO 4 ) 3 . Multiple synthetic approaches are presented, supplemented with reaction methodology and reagent screening to access [14]aneN 2 S 2 L1 . Reductive alkylation of bis-tosyl-cystamine was integrated into the synthetic route, eliminating the use and isolation of volatile thiols and streamlining the synthetic scale-up. Late-stage cleavage of protecting sulfonamides was addressed using reductive N-S cleavage to furnish macrocyclic freebase L1 .

Diiminoisoindoline (DII) is a crucial reagent for the synthesis of phthalocyanine as well as related macrocycles and chelates such as hemiporphyrazine and bis(iminopyridyl)isoindoline. In this report, we present the synthesis and characterization of four 1,3-diylideneisoindolines prepared via the reaction of several organic CH acids and DII. These orange or red compounds exhibit intense π → π* transitions in the UV-visible region. The redox properties and electronic structures of all new compounds were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and density functional theory (DFT). The observed electrochemistry and UV-visible transitions are in good agreement with the DFT and time-dependent DFT calculations, which indicate that the HOMO is largely centered at the O═C-C-C═O fragments, and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is more extended onto the isoindoline unit.

The synthesis of a rigid macrobicyclic N,S lactam L1 and a topologically favored in/in N,S cryptand L2 are reported with X-ray structure analysis, dynamic correlation NMR spectroscopy, and computational analysis. Lactam L1 exhibits two distinct rotameric conformations (plus their enantiomeric counterparts) at 25 °C, as confirmed via NMR spectroscopy and computational analysis. Coalescence of the resonances of L1 was observed at 115 °C, allowing for complete nuclei to frequency correlation. Combining computational investigations with experimental data, topological equilibria and relative energies/strain relating to the perturbation of the pore were determined. Due to the increased conformational strain of the N 2 S 2 template, the nitrogen lone pairs in L2 elicit a unique transannular interaction, resulting in a thermodynamically favored in/in nephroidal racemate. The combination of preferred topology, steric relief, and electronic localization of L2 induces a chiral environment imparted through the amine with a computed inversion barrier of 10.3 kcal mol -1 .

We report the crystallography, emission spectra, femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, and density functional theory computations for a series of ruthenium complexes that comprise a new class of chelating triphenylphosphine based ligands with an appended sulfoxide moiety. These ligands differ only in the presence of the para-substitutent (e.g., H, OCH 3 , CF 3 ). The results show a dramatic range in photoisomerization reactivity that is ascribed to differences in the electron density of the phosphine ligand donated to the ruthenium and the nature of the excited state.

The synthesis of two new heteroleptic Cu(I) photosensitizers (PS), [Cu(Xantphos)(NN)]PF 6 (NN = biq = 2,2'-biquinoline, dmebiq = 2,2'-biquinoline-4,4'-dimethyl ester; Xantphos = 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene), along with the associated structural, photophysical, and electrochemical properties, are described. The biquinoline diimine ligand extends the PS light absorbing properties into the visible with a maximum absorption at 455 and 505 nm for NN = biq and dmebiq, respectively, in CH 2 Cl 2 solvent. Following photoexcitation, both Cu(I) PS are emissive at low energy, albeit displaying stark differences in their excited state lifetimes (τ MLCT = 410 ± 5 (biq) and 44 ± 4 ns (dmebiq)). Cyclic voltammetry indicates a Cu-based HOMO and NN-based LUMO for both complexes, whereby the methyl ester substituents stabilize the LUMO within [Cu(Xantphos)(dmebiq)] + by ∼0.37 V compared to the unsubstituted analogue. When combined with H 2 O, N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) electron donor, and cis-[Rh(NN) 2 Cl 2 ]PF 6 (NN = Me 2 bpy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, dmebpy = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dimethyl ester) water reduction catalysts (WRC), photocatalytic H 2 evolution is only observed using the [Cu(Xantphos)(biq)] + PS. Furthermore, the choice of cis-[Rh(NN) 2 Cl 2 ] + WRC strongly affects the catalytic activity with turnover numbers (TON Rh = mol H 2 per mol Rh catalyst) of 25 ± 3, 22 ± 1, and 43 ± 3 for NN = Me 2 bpy, bpy, and dmebpy, respectively. This work illustrates how ligand modification to carefully tune the PS light absorbing, excited state, and redox-active properties, along with the WRC redox potentials, can have a profound impact on the photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer between components and the subsequent catalytic activity.

α-Amidinoazadi(benzopyrro)methenes were synthesized using the Re(CO) 3 unit as a templating agent. The products of these template reactions are six-coordinate rhenium complexes, with a facial arrangement of carbonyls, a noncoordinating anion, and a tridentate α-amidinoazadi(benzopyrro)methene ligand. The tridentate ligand shows the conversion of one diiminoisoindoline sp 2 carbon to a sp 3 carbon, which has been seen in the "helmet" and bicyclic phthalocyanines. The bidentate diiminoisoindoline fragment tilts out of the plane of coordination. Five examples of α-amidinoazadi(benzopyrro)methenes produced from these reactions using different nitrile solvents, including the nitrile activation of acetonitrile, propionitrile, butyronitrile, cyclohexanecarbonitrile, and benzonitrile.

Neutral and deprotonated anionic Ni(II), Pd(II), Cu(II), and Cu(III) complexes of tetrakis(perfluorophenyl)-N-confused porphyrin (PF-NCP) were prepared and investigated by UV-visible and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies. As in the previously reported Ni(II) adduct of tetraphenyl N-confused porphyrin, we observe sign reverse (positive to negative intensities with increasing energy) features in the MCD spectra of the neutral Ni(II), Pd(II), and Cu(II) complexes of PF-NCP, which is indicative of rare ΔHOMO < ΔLUMO relationships. Upon deprotonation of Ni(II), Pd(II), and Cu(II) complexes, these features revert to those of more typical porphyrin MCD spectra consistent with a ΔHOMO > ΔLUMO condition. The Cu(III) PF-NCP complex shows features similar to those of the deprotonated divalent metal systems. Spectroscopic features in all target complexes as well as previously published metal-free and Ni(II) NCP systems were correlated with the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations. Calculation data are consistent with the tautomeric rearrangement of the electronic structures of NCP cores playing dominant roles, with smaller contribution from the central metal ions in the observed optical and magneto-optical properties. This is true for all described NCP systems to date, as they affect the stabilization/destabilization of the N-confused porphyrin-centered Gouterman orbitals.

The 1,3,7,9-tetraferrocenylazadipyrromethene (3) and the corresponding 1,3,5,7-tetraferrocene aza-BODIPY (4) were prepared via three and four synthetic steps, respectively, starting from ferrocenecarbaldehyde using the chalcone-type synthetic methodology. The novel tetra-iron compounds have ferrocene groups directly attached to both the α- and the β-pyrrolic positions, and the shortest Fe-Fe distance determined by X-ray crystallography for 3 was found to be ∼6.98 Å. These new compounds were characterized by UV-vis, nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry methods, while metal-metal couplings in these systems were probed by electro- and spectroelectrochemistry, chemical oxidations, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Electrochemical data are suggestive of the well-separated stepwise oxidations of all four ferrocene groups in 3 and 4, while spectroelectrochemical and chemical oxidation experiments allowed for characterization of the mixed-valence forms in the target compounds. Intervalence charge-transfer band analyses indicate that the mixed-valence [3] + and [4] + complexes belong to the weakly coupled class II systems in the Robin-Day classification. This interpretation was further supported by Mössbauer spectroscopy in which two individual doublets for Fe(II) and Fe(III) centers were observed in room-temperature experiments for the mixed-valence [3] n+ and [4] n+ species (n = 1-3). The electronic structure, redox properties, and UV-vis spectra of new systems were correlated with Density Functional Theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations (TDDFT), which are suggestive of a ferrocene-centered highest occupied molecular orbital and chromophore-centered lowest unoccupied molecular orbital in 3 and 4 as well as predominant spin localization at the ferrocene fragment attached to the α-pyrrolic positions in [3] + and [4] + .

Paramagnetic resonance studies (EPR, ESEEM, ENDOR, and NMR) of a series of cobalt(II) bis-trispyrazolylmethane tetrafluoroborates are presented. The complexes studied include the parent, unsubstituted ligand (Tpm), two pyrazole-substituted derivatives (4Me and 3,5-diMe), and tris(1-pyrazolyl)ethane (Tpe), which includes a methyl group on the apical carbon atom. NMR and ENDOR establish the magnitude of 1 H hyperfine couplings, while ESEEM provides information on the coordinated 14 N. The data show that the pyrazole 3-position is more electron rich in the Tpm analogues, that the geometry about the apical atom influences the magnetic resonance, and that apical atom geometry appears more fixed in Tpm than in Tp. NMR and ENDOR establish that the BF 4 - counterion remains associated in fluid solution. In the case of the Tpm 3,5Me complex, it appears to associate in solution, in the same position it occupies in the X-ray structure.

Half-hemiporphyrazine macrocycles, which can be called "semihemiporphyrazines", were synthesized using the Re(CO) 3 unit as a templating agent. The products of these template reactions are six-coordinate rhenium complexes, with a facial arrangement of carbonyls, a halide, and a bidentate semihemiporphyrazine chelate that tilts out of the plane of coordination. Three types of semihemiporphyrazines can be produced from these reactions, depending on the alternate heterocycle to the isoindoline unit; structures including pyridine, thiazole, and benzimidazole were formed. The electronic structures of these compounds were probed using spectroscopy as well as density functional theory methods.

A large set of free-base and transition-metal 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-substituted chlorins, bacteriochlorins, and isobacteriochlorins and their pyrrole-modified analogues were investigated by combined UV-visible spectroscopy, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), density functional theory (DFT), and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) approaches and their spectral characteristics were compared to those of the parent compounds, free-base tetraphenylporphyrin 1H2 and chlorin 2H2. It was shown that the nature of the pyrroline substituents in the chlorin derivatives dictates their specific UV-vis and MCD spectroscopic signatures. In all hydroporphyrin-like cases, MCD spectroscopy suggests that the ΔHOMO is smaller than the ΔLUMO for the macrocycle-centered frontier molecular orbitals. DFT and TDDFT calculations were able to explain the large broadening of the UV-vis and MCD spectra of the chlorin diones and their derivatives compared to the other hydroporphyrins and hydroporphyrin analogues. This study contributes to the further understanding of the electronic effects of replacing a pyrrole in porphyrins by pyrrolines or other five-membered heterocycles (oxazoles and imidazoles).

The Re(CO)3 unit was used to template the formation of aza(dibenzopyrro)methene (ADBM) in the presence of pyridine or N-methylimidazole. The products of these template reactions are six-coordinate complexes, with a facial arrangement of the carbonyls, a bidentate ADBM, and a sixth ligand (pyridine or N-methylimiadozle). Three types of ADBM ligands are produced from these reactions, depending on the degree of hydrolysis; bis(imine)-terminated, bis(oxo)-terminated, and mixed-imine/oxo chelates were formed.

The synthesis of a series of β-functionalized push-pull dibenzoporphyrins was realized. These porphyrins display subtle push-pull effects, demonstrating the exceptional tunability of their electronic and electrochemical properties. The UV-vis spectra of these porphyrins show unique absorption patterns with shouldered Soret bands and extra absorptions in the Q-band region. Stronger electron-withdrawing groups display more significant bathochromic shifts of the Soret bands. The fluorescence spectra of these porphyrins show strong near-IR emission bands (600-850 nm). In particular, fluorescence quenching effect was observed for pyridyl carrying push-pull porphyrin 4c in the presence of an acid. TFA titration study of 4c using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy reveals that the fluorescence quenching can be mainly attributed to the protonation of the pyridyl groups of 4c. The versatile synthetic methods developed in this work may open a door to access a large number of functionalized organic materials that are currently unavailable. The structure-property studies provided in this work may provide useful guidelines for the design of new generations of materials in dye-sensitized solar cells, in nonlinear optical applications, as fluorescence probes, as well as sensitizers for photodynamic therapy.

A series of metallocorroles were investigated by UV-vis and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopies. The diamagnetic distorted square-pyramidal main-group corrole Ga(tpfc)py (2), the diamagnetic distorted octahedral transition-metal adduct Co(tpfc)(py)2 (3), and paramagnetic distorted octahedral transition-metal complex Fe(tpfc)(py)2 (4) [H3tpfc = tris(perfluorophenyl)corrole] were studied to investigate similarities and differences in the electronic structure and spectroscopy of the closed- and open-shell metallocorroles. Similar to the free-base H3tpfc (1), inspection of the MCD Faraday B-terms for all of the macrocycles presented in this report revealed that a ΔHOMO < ΔLUMO [ΔHOMO is the energy difference between two highest energy corrole-centered π-orbitals and ΔLUMO is the energy difference between two lowest energy corrole-centered π*-orbitals originating from ML ± 4 and ML ± 5 pairs of perimeter] condition is present for each complex, which results in an unusual sign-reversed sequence for π-π* transitions in their MCD spectra. In addition, the MCD spectra of the cobalt and the iron complexes were also complicated by a number of charge-transfer states in the visible region. Iron complex 4 also exhibits a low-energy absorption in the NIR region (1023 nm). DFT and TDDFT calculations were used to elaborate the electronic structures and provide band assignments in UV-vis and MCD spectra of the metallocorroles. DFT and TDDFT calculations predict that the orientation of the axial pyridine ligand(s) has a very minor influence on the calculated electronic structures and absorption spectra in the target systems.

The ortho-phenylenes are a simple class of foldamers, with the formation of helices driven by offset aromatic stacking interactions parallel to the helical axis. For the majority of reported o-phenylene oligomers, the perfectly folded conformer comprises perhaps 50-75% of the total population. Given the hundreds or thousands of possible conformers for even short oligomers, this distribution represents a substantial bias toward the folded state. However, "next-generation" o-phenylenes with better folding properties are needed if these structures are to be exploited as functional units within more complex architectures. Here, we report several new series of o-phenylene oligomers, varying both the nature and orientation of the substituents on every repeat unit. The conformational behavior was probed using a combination of NMR spectroscopy, DFT calculations, and X-ray crystallography. We find that increasing the electron-withdrawing character of the substituents gives oligomers with substantially improved folding properties. With moderately electron-withdrawing groups (acetoxy), we observe >90% of the perfectly folded conformer, and stronger electron withdrawing groups (triflate, cyano) give oligomers for which misfolded states are undetectable by NMR. The folding of these oligomers is only weakly solvent-dependent. General guidelines for the assessment of o-phenylene folding by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy are also discussed.

Phlorins bearing different substituents at the sp(3)-hybridized meso-position were investigated. The extent to which different substituents at this unique position can influence phlorin spectroscopic properties, structure, and stability is of interest given that such substituents are not in direct conjugation with the phlorin macrocycle. While the effect of various substituents at the sp(2)-hybridized positions has been the subject of prior investigations, the impact of different substituents at the saturated carbon atom has not been systematically examined. In this study, phlorins with different combinations of geminal methyl and phenyl substituents were prepared in yields of 24-49% via dipyrromethane + dipyrromethanedicarbinol routes, and their NMR spectra, UV-vis spectra, X-ray crystal structures, and stability toward light and air were compared. The nature of the substituents at the sp(3)-hybridized position was found to impact spectroscopic properties, structure, and stability to varying degrees. Thus, the choice of substituents at the sp(3)-hybridized meso-position provides a further option for altering phlorin properties.

3,3'-Diferrocenylazadipyrromethene (3) and corresponding difluoroboryl (azaBODIPY) complex (4) were synthesized in several steps from ferrocenecarbaldehyde, following the well-explored chalcone-type synthetic approach. The novel diiron complexes, in which ferrocene groups are directly connected to the α-pyrrolic positions were characterized by a variety of spectroscopic techniques, electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and X-ray crystallography, while their electronic structure, redox properties, and UV-vis spectra were correlated with the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations.

The new fluorescent chromophore BOPHY can be readily synthesized in two steps from commercially available reagents via the coupling of pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde with hydrazine followed by reaction with BF3. The resultant symmetric and dimeric tetracycle is composed of two BF2 units in six-membered chelate rings appended with pyrrole units on the periphery. The quantum yields of fluorescence for the unmodified compound and the tetramethyl variant are near unity, with values of 95 and 92%, respectively, in CH2Cl2. We have probed the electronic structure of this compound via cyclic voltammetry and density functional theory analysis.

N-Confused porphyrin (NCP) and its externally methylated variant (MeNCP) were investigated using UV-vis and magnetic circular dichrosim (MCD) spectroscopies. In addition to evaluating the spectroscopy of the neutral compounds, the acid/base chemistry of these macrocycles was examined by the same methods. NCP exhibits two tautomeric states depending on the polarity of the solvent, and their protonation/deprotonation chemistries also differ depending on solvent polarity. DFT and TDDFT calculations were employed to evaluate the observed spectroscopic changes. Using both experimental and calculated results, we were able to determine the sites of protonation/deprotonation for both tautomeric forms of NCP. Inspection of the MCD Faraday B terms for all of the macrocycles presented in this report showed that the ΔHOMO > ΔLUMO condition is maintained in all cases, and these observations were in good agreement with the DFT calculations.

The ortho-phenylenes are a simple class of helical oligomers and representative of the broader class of sterically congested polyphenylenes. Recent work has shown that o-phenylenes fold into well-defined helical conformations (in solution and, typically, in the solid state); however, the specific causes of this folding behavior have not been determined. Here, we report the effect of substituents on the conformational distributions of a series of o-phenylene hexamers. These experiments are complemented by dispersion-corrected DFT calculations on model oligomers (B97-D/TZV(2d,2p)). The results are consistent with a deterministic role for offset arene-arene stacking interactions on the folding behavior. On the basis of the experimental and computational results, we propose a model for o-phenylene folding with two simple rules. (1) Conformers are forbidden if they include a particular sequence of biaryl torsional states that causes excessive steric strain. These "ABA" states correspond to consecutive dihedral angles of -55°/+130°/-55° (or +55°/-130°/+55). (2) The stability of the remaining conformers is determined by offset arene-arene stacking interactions that are easily estimated as an additive function of the number of well-folded torsional states (±55°) along the backbone. For the parent, unsubstituted poly(o-phenylene), each interaction contributes roughly 0.5 kcal/mol to the helix stability (in chloroform), although their strength is sensitive to substituent effects. The behavior of the o-phenylenes as a class is discussed in the context of this model. They are analogous to α-helices, with axial aromatic stacking interactions in place of hydrogen bonding. The model predicts that the overall folding propensity should be quite sensitive to relatively small changes in the strength of the arene-arene stacking. In a broader sense, these results demonstrate that polyphenylenes may exhibit folding behavior that is amenable to simple models, and validate the use of diffusion-corrected DFT methods in predicting their three-dimensional structures.

The formal replacement of one or two pyrrole groups in meso-tetraphenylporphyrin by oxazole moieties is described, generating inter alia the bacteriochlorin-type chromophores oxazolobacteriochlorins (oxabacteriochlorins) and bisoxazolobacteriochlorins (dioxabacteriochlorins). The key step is the conversion of a β,β'-dihydroxy-functionalized pyrroline group into an oxazolone or (substituted) oxazole. Depending on the substitution pattern on the oxazole or oxazoline moieties, mono- and dioxabacteriochlorins may have chlorin- or bacteriochlorin-like spectra. The optical properties (as measured by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies) of the novel oxa- and dioxabacteriochlorins are described and contrasted against benchmark chlorins and bacteriochlorins. The conformations of a representative number of mono- and dioxabacteriochlorins, as their free bases or Zn(II) complexes, were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. They proved to be essentially planar, showing that the modulation of their optical properties is primarily due to their intrinsic electronic structures and electronic substituent effects and are not largely affected by conformational effects. The mono- and bisoxazolobacteriochlorins are a novel class of readily prepared and oxidatively stable chlorin and bacteriochlorin analogues with tunable optical spectra that, in part, reach into the NIR.

The complex [Ru(bpy)(2)(bpSO)](PF(6))(2), where bpy is 2,2'-bipydine and bpSO is 1,2-bis(phenylsulfinyl)ethane, exhibits three distinct isomers which are accessible upon metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) irradiation. This complex and its parent, [Ru(bpy)(2)(bpte)](PF(6))(2), where bpte is 1,2-bis(phenylthio)ethane, have been synthesized and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, NMR, X-ray crystallography, and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. A novel method of 2-color Pump-Repump-Probe spectroscopy has been employed to investigate all three isomers of the bis-sulfoxide complex. This method allows for observation of the isomerization dynamics of sequential isomerizations of each sulfoxide from MLCT irradiation of the S,S-bonded complex to ultimately form the O,O-bonded metastable complex. One-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) (COSY, NOESY, and TOCSY) (1)H NMR data show the thioether and ground state S,S-bonded sulfoxide complexes to be rigorously C(2) symmetric and are consistent with the crystal structures. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that the S,S to S,O isomerization occurs with an observed time constant of 56.8 (±7.4) ps. The S,O to O,O isomerization time constant was found to be 59 (±4) ps by pump-repump-probe spectroscopy. The composite S,S- to O,O-isomer quantum yield is 0.42.

The reaction of diiminoisoindoline with amine-terminated polyethers results in the formation of phthalocrown macrocycles. For n = 1 (where n is the number of ether units), a 2 + 2 condensation takes place, but for n = 2 and 3, a 1 + 1 macrocycle formation occurs. The n = 2 phthalocrown is particularly stable due to a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond, but the n = 3 ring hydrolyzes to form a 3-imino-1-oxoisoindoline derivatized crown ether species. For the n = 1 phthalocrown, we observed dynamic behavior in the (1)H NMR spectrum, and using VTNMR were able to measure a ΔG(‡) = 44.6 kJ/mol for proton exchange.

The rational syntheses of meso-tetraaryl-3-oxo-2-oxaporphyrins 5, known as porpholactones, via MnO(4)(-)-mediated oxidations of the corresponding meso-tetraaryl-2,3-dihydroxychlorins (7) is detailed. Since chlorin 7 is prepared from the parent porphyrin 1, this amounts to a 2-step replacement of a pyrrole moiety in 1 by an oxazolone moiety. The stepwise reduction of the porpholactone 5 results in the formation of chlorin analogues, meso-tetraaryl-3-hydroxy-2-oxachlorin (11) and meso-tetraaryl-2-oxachlorins (12). The reactivity of 11 with respect to nucleophilic substitution by O-, N-, and S-nucleophiles is described. The profound photophysical consequences of the formal replacement of a pyrrole with an oxazolone (porphyrin-like chromophore) or (substituted) oxazole moiety (chlorin-like chromophore with, for the parent oxazolochlorin 12, red-shifted Q(x) band with enhanced oscillator strengths) are detailed and rationalized on the basis of SAC-CI and MNDO-PSDCI molecular orbital theory calculations. The single crystal X-ray structures of the porpholactones point at a minor steric interaction between the carbonyl oxygen and the flanking phenyl group. The essentially planar structures of all chromophores in all oxidation states prove that the observed optical properties originate from the intrinsic electronic properties of the chromophores and are not subject to conformational modulation.

The formal replacement of a pyrrole moiety of meso-tetraarylporphyrin 1 by an oxazole moiety is described. The key step is the conversion of porpholactones 4 (prepared by a known two-step oxidation procedure from 1) by addition of alkyl Grignard reagent to form meso-tetraaryl-3-alkyl-2-oxachlorins 9 (alkyloxazolochlorins; alkyl = Me, Et, iPr). Hemiacetal 9 can be converted to an acetal, reduced to an ether, or converted to bis-alkyloxazolochlorins 11. The optical properties (UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy) are described. The chlorin-like optical properties of the alkyloxazolochlorins are compared to regular chlorins, such as 2,3-dihydroxychlorins and nonalkylated oxazolochlorins made by reduction from porpholactone 4. The conformations of the mono- and bis-alkylated 2-oxachlorins, as determined by single crystal X-ray diffractometry, are essentially planar, thus proving that their optical properties are largely due to their intrinsic electronic properties and not affected by conformational effects. The mono- and bis-3-alkyl-2-oxachlorins are a class of readily prepared and oxidatively stable chlorins.

Nickel N-confused tetraphenylporphyrin, 1, and nickel 2-N-methyl-N-confused tetraphenylporphyrin, 1-Me, exhibit unusual sign-reversed (positive-to-negative intensities in ascending energy) MCD spectra in the Q-type band region, suggesting a rare ΔHOMO < ΔLUMO relationship between π and π* MOs in the porphyrin core. Simple and reversible deprotonation of the external NH proton in 1 dramatically changes the electronic structure of the porphyrin core into the ΔHOMO > ΔLUMO combination characteristic for the meso-(tetraaryl)porphyrins. DFT, time-dependent DFT, and semiempirical ZINDO/S calculations on 1, 1-Me, and 1(-) confirm the experimental finding and successfully explain the MCD pattern in the target compounds., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

Triphenylene has been successfully fused to the porphyrin periphery through a convenient oxidative ring-closure reaction. Bistriphenylene-fused porphyrins and a dibenzo[fg,op]tetracene-fused porphyrin have also been obtained using a similar approach. Presented herein are the first lithium complexes of the porphyrin isomer N-confused porphyrin and its 21-N-methylated variant. In both cases, the macrocycle acts as a monoanionic ligand, and the internal C-H bond is retained upon metalation. In the presence the coordinating solvent tetrahydrofuran, pseudo-five-coordinate complexes are generated; in the absence of solvent, the axial positions remain vacant.

We report the structure, electrochemistry, and isomerization kinetics for [Ru(bpy)(biq)(OSO)](PF(6)), where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, biq is 2,2'-biquinoline, and OSO is 2-methylsulfinylbenzoate. UV-visible and infrared data are suggestive of intramolecular S-->O and O-->S isomerization of the sulfoxide. Cyclic voltammetry reveals evidence for isomerization triggered by oxidation and reduction. Of particular note is the variation of the S-->O isomerization rate constant in different solvents. The rates were found to be 3.2 (+/-0.4) s(-1) in propylene carbonate, 0.80 (+/-0.03) s(-1) in acetonitrile, and 0.26 (+/-0.01) s(-1) in dichloromethane.

The hemiporphyrazines comprise a broad class of phthalocyanine analogues where one or two of the diiminoisoindolene units are replaced with alternative rings, including pyridines, benzenes, and azoles. As a means to explore the fundamental metal chemistry of these macrocycles, we have prepared the first lithium complexes of three hemiporphyrazine variants: the common bis-pyridine ring, the bis-benzene macrocycle (also known as dicarbahemiporphyrazine), and the monobenzene variant (also known as benziphthalocyanine). The metal cation can be inserted via reaction of the free bases by using lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide, and the resulting products all form 1:1 complexes with protonation at the meso nitrogens providing charge balance. For the two carbahemiporphyrazines studied, the internal C-H bond remains intact upon metalation. Similar structures have been observed in the transition metal complexes of the carbaporphyrins. In addition, all three complexes are characterized by (7)Li solid state NMR and by cyclic voltammetry.

Although directly relevant to metal mediated biological nitrification as well as the coordination chemistry of peroxide, the metal complexes of hydroxylamines and their functionalized variants remain largely unexplored. The chelating hydroxylamine ligand N,N-bis(2-{pyrid-2-ylethyl})hydroxylamine can be readily generated via a solvent free reaction in high purity; however, the ligand is prone to decomposition which can hamper metal reaction. N,N-bis(2-{pyrid-2-ylethyl})hydroxylamine forms stable complexes with chromium(III), manganese(II), nickel(II), and cadmium(II) ions, coordinating in a side-on mode in the case of chromium and via the nitrogen in the case of the latter three metal ions. The hydroxylamine ligand can also be reduced to form N,N-bis(2-{pyrid-2-ylethyl})amine upon exposure to a stoichiometric amount of the metal salts cobalt(II) nitrate, vanadium(III) chloride, and iron(II) chloride. In the reaction with cobalt nitrate, the reduced ligand then chelates to the metal to form [N,N-bis(2-{pyrid-2-ylethyl})amine]dinitrocobalt(II). Upon reaction with vanadium(III) chloride and iron(III) chloride, the reduced ligand is isolated as the protonated free base, resulting from a metal-mediated decomposition reaction.

The reactions of ammonia, pyridine (py), N-methyl imidazole (N-MeIm), tetrahydrothiophene (tht), and piperidine (pip) with Re(CO) 3(H 2O) 3 (+), 1 ( + ), were investigated employing aqueous conditions under atmospheric dioxygen. The reaction of [ 1]Br in aqueous ammonia led to [Re(CO) 3(NH 3) 3]Br ([ 2]Br) as the only product isolated. For the aqueous reactions of [ 1]Br with py, N-MeIm, and tht, mixtures of products are formed because of competition between the bromide and added ligand, even when the ligand is present in excess. Substitution of the PF 6 (-) anion for Br (-) leads to the clean formation of [Re(CO) 3L 3][PF 6] ([ 3][PF 6]-[ 5][PF 6]) for py, N-MeIm, and tht, respectively, as the only products observed. Reaction of [ 1][PF 6] with pip produces the dimeric species, (pip)(CO) 3Re(micro-OH) 2Re(CO) 3(pip), 6. Reactions of [ 1]Br were also performed in methanol for comparison purposes. The reaction with pip in this solvent led to the analogous dimer, (pip)(CO) 3Re(micro-OMe) 2Re(CO) 3(pip), 7; however, reactions with py, N-MeIm, and tht gave Re(CO) 3L 2Br, 8- 10, respectively, as the only products. The crystal structures of compounds [ 2]Br- 10 are reported.

Three Re(I) complexes (3, 5, and 7) (Re(CO)3Cl(L)2) and three new Pt(II) complexes (4, 6, and 8) ([Pt(P(Et)3)2(L)2](OTf)2), where L = pyridine, 1 (4-Py-EDOT) or 2 (4-Py-bithiophene), were prepared and characterized. The solid-state structures of 4 and 5 were determined by X-ray crystallography. Electrochromic polymeric films of 2, 5, and 6 were prepared and characterized.

The metallation of the core-modified phthalocyanine analogue dicarbahemiporphyrazine with manganese, iron, and cobalt results in the formation of low-coordinate metal(II) complexes. All three compounds are produced by the reaction of metal carbonyls with the free base macrocycle. As in many other carbaporphyrinoids, the internal C-H bonds remain intact upon metallation, resulting in the formation of two long-range agostic-type interactions. Each metal can thus be considered as a three-coordinate ion, where two inner isoindolene nitrogens and a single axial pyridine are bound to the metal. The manganese and cobalt complexes, Mn(dchp)py and Co(dchp)py, are nearly isostructural, but the iron complex, Fe(dchpH2)py, exhibits a reduction at an iminic double bond upon metallation.

The formation of vanadium(III) complexes with nuclearity greater than two is believed to occur in aqueous solution on the basis of potentiometric, electrochemical, and/or UV-vis spectroscopy titration measurements, although structural evidence for this is limited. Upon the addition of 1-2 equiv of acetate, propionate, chloroacetate, trifluoroacetate, or bromoacetate to an aqueous, acidic solution of vanadium(III), trinuclear and tetranuclear complexes are formed. The structures of [V4(mu-OH)4(mu-OOCCF3)4(OH2)8]Cl4.7.5H2O (1), [V4(mu-OH)4(mu-OOCCH3)4(OH2)8]Cl4.CH3COOH.12H2O (2), [V4(mu-OH)4(mu-OOCCH3)4(OH2)8]Cl4.3H2O (3), [V3(mu3-O)(mu-OOCCH2Br)6(OH2)3]CF3SO3.H2O (4), [V3(mu3-O)(mu-OOCCH2CH3)6(OH2)3]Cl.2H2O (5), [V3(mu3-O)(mu-OOCCH3)6(OH2)3]Cl.3.5H2O (6), and [V3(mu3-O)(mu-OOCCH2Cl)6(OH2)3]CF3SO3.H2O (7) have been determined by X-ray diffraction. Importantly, electrospray mass spectrometry and 1H NMR measurements suggest that these complexes are not purely solid-state phenomena but are also present in solution. For the vanadium(III)/acetate and vanadium(III)/propionate systems, two paramagnetic 1H NMR signals corresponding to two distinct complexes (species A and B) are observed in the 40-55 ppm region for 0.20 mol equiv of acetate or propionate, at pD 3.44. No corresponding signals are observed for the vanadium(III)/bromoacetate and vanadium(III)/chloroacetate systems under the same conditions or for the vanadium(III)/ trifluoroacetate system using 19F NMR spectroscopy. UV-vis spectra suggest that species B are structurally analogous for the vanadium(III)/acetate and vanadium(III)/propionate systems, whereas structurally different complexes are the major species for the other systems. Diffusion coefficients of species B for the vanadium(III)/acetate and vanadium(III)/propionate systems determined by pulsed-field-gradient spin-echo NMR spectroscopy measurements are (3.0 +/- 0.1) x 10-6 and (3.23 +/- 0.01) x 10-6 cm2 s-1, respectively, and are most consistent with species B being trimeric, rather than tetranuclear, complexes.

The photophysical characterization of the two tautomers (1e and 1i) of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl N-confused free-base porphyrin, as well as the tautomer-locked 2-methyl 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl N-confused free-base porphyrin, was carried out using a combination of steady state and time-resolved optical techniques. N-Confused porphyrins, alternatively called 2-aza-21-carba-porphyrins or inverted porphyrins, are of great interest for their potential as building blocks in assemblies designed for artificial photosynthesis, and understanding their excited-state properties is paramount to future studies in multicomponent arrays. Femtosecond resolved transient absorption experiments reveal spectra that are similar to those of tetraphenylporphyrin (H2TPP) with either Soret or Q-band excitation, with an extinction coefficient for the major absorbing band of 1e that was about a factor of 5 larger than that of H2TPP. The lifetime of the S1 state was determined at a variety of absorption wavelengths for each compound and was found to be consistent with time-resolved fluorescence experiments. These experiments reveal that the externally protonated tautomer (1e) is longer lived (tau = 1.84 ns) than the internally protonated form (1i, tau = 1.47 ns) by approximately 369 ps and that the N-methyl N-confused porphyrin was shorter lived than the tautomeric forms by approximately 317 ps (DMAc) and approximately 396 ps (benzene). Steady-state fluorescence experiments on tautomers 1e and 1i and the N-methyl analogues corroborate these results, with fluorescence quantum yields (Phi(Fl)) of 0.046 (1e, DMAc) and 0.023 (1i, benzene), and 0.025 (DMAc) and 0.018 (benzene) for the N-methyl N-confused porphyrin. The lifetime and quantum yield data was interpreted in terms of structural changes that influence the rate of internal conversion. The absorption and transient absorption spectra of these porphyrins were also examined in the context of DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G(d)//B3LYP/3-21G(d) level of theory and compared to the spectra/electronic structure of H2TPP and tetraphenyl chlorin.
