A hybrid density functional study of mechanisms was conducted for oxidatative dehydrogenation of propane on the (010) surface of V(sub 2)O(sub 5). The potential energy surface is found to have large barriers, which are lowered somewhat when the possibility of a triplet state is considered and the triplet state is stabilized by breaking of surface bonds by adsorbates and transfer of charge to the surface.

Predictions of the transition enthalpy of nanocrystalline and rutile is presented using a thermodynamic model as a function of shape, size, and degree of surface pasivation. This showed that thermochemical results can differ for various faceted or spherical nanoparticles.

The interactions of catechol and water with titanium oxide nanoparticles using ab initio molecular orbital theory and density function theory are investigated. The calculations indicate that catechol reacts with a Ti=O defect site on the surface, forms a bidentate structure favored over dissociative or molecular adsorption in the anatase surface.

Small molecules that increase the oxygen affinity of human hemoglobin may reduce sickling of red blood cells in patients with sickle cell disease. We screened 38 700 compounds using small molecule microarrays and identified 427 molecules that bind to hemoglobin. We developed a high-throughput assay for evaluating the ability of the 427 small molecules to modulate the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin. We identified a novel allosteric effector of hemoglobin, di(5-(2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-2-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)disulfide (TD-1). TD-1 induced a greater increase in oxygen affinity of human hemoglobin in solution and in red blood cells than did 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (5-HMF), N-ethylmaleimide (NEM), or diformamidine disulfide. The three-dimensional structure of hemoglobin complexed with TD-1 revealed that monomeric units of TD-1 bound covalently to β-Cys93 and β-Cys112, as well as noncovalently to the central water cavity of the hemoglobin tetramer. The binding of TD-1 to hemoglobin stabilized the relaxed state (R3-state) of hemoglobin. TD-1 increased the oxygen affinity of sickle hemoglobin and inhibited in vitro hypoxia-induced sickling of red blood cells in patients with sickle cell disease without causing hemolysis. Our study indicates that TD-1 represents a novel lead molecule for the treatment of patients with sickle cell disease.

Calcium-ion batteries (CIBs) are a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the low redox potential of calcium metal and high abundance of calcium compounds. Due to its layered structure, α-MoO 3 is regarded as a promising cathode host lattice. While studies have reported that α-MoO 3 can reversibly intercalate Ca ions, limited electrochemical activity has been noted, and its reaction mechanism remains unclear. Here, we re-examine Ca insertion into α-MoO 3 nanoparticles with a goal to improve reaction kinetics and clarify the storage mechanism. The α-MoO 3 electrodes demonstrated a specific capacity of 165 mA h g -1 centered near 2.7 V vs Ca 2+ /Ca, stable long-term cycling, and good rate performance at room temperature. This work demonstrates that, under the correct conditions, layered oxides can be a promising host material for CIBs and renews prospects for CIBs.

Perovskite oxides are an important class of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in alkaline media, despite the elusive nature of their active sites. Here, we demonstrate that the origin of the OER activity in a La 1- x Sr x CoO 3 model perovskite arises from a thin surface layer of Co hydr(oxy)oxide (CoO x H y ) that interacts with trace-level Fe species present in the electrolyte, creating dynamically stable active sites. Generation of the hydr(oxy)oxide layer is a consequence of a surface evolution process driven by the A-site dissolution and O-vacancy creation. In turn, this imparts a 10-fold improvement in stability against Co dissolution and a 3-fold increase in the activity-stability factor for CoO x H y /LSCO when compared to nanoscale Co-hydr(oxy)oxides clusters. Our results suggest new design rules for active and stable perovskite oxide-based OER materials.

The design of low-cost yet high-efficiency electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) over a wide pH range is highly challenging. We now report a hierarchical co-assembly of interacting MoS 2 and Co 9 S 8 nanosheets attached on Ni 3 S 2 nanorod arrays which are supported on nickel foam (NF). This tiered structure endows high performance toward HER and OER over a very broad pH range. By adjusting the molar ratio of the Co:Mo precursors, we have created CoMoNiS-NF- xy composites ( x: y means Co:Mo molar ratios ranging from 5:1 to 1:3) with controllable morphology and composition. The three-dimensional composites have an abundance of active sites capable of universal pH catalytic HER and OER activity. The CoMoNiS-NF-31 demonstrates the best electrocatalytic activity, giving ultralow overpotentials (113, 103, and 117 mV for HER and 166, 228, and 405 mV for OER) to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm -2 in alkaline, acidic, and neutral electrolytes, respectively. It also shows a remarkable balance between electrocatalytic activity and stability. Based on the distinguished catalytic performance of CoMoNiS-NF-31 toward HER and OER, we demonstrate a two-electrode electrolyzer performing water electrolysis over a wide pH range, with low cell voltages of 1.54, 1.45, and 1.80 V at 10 mA cm -2 in alkaline, acidic, and neutral media, respectively. First-principles calculations suggest that the high OER activity arises from electron transfer from Co 9 S 8 to MoS 2 at the interface, which alters the binding energies of adsorbed species and decreases overpotentials. Our results demonstrate that hierarchical metal sulfides can serve as highly efficient all-pH (pH = 0-14) electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Understanding ionic transport across interfaces between dissimilar materials and the intrinsic chemical stability of such interfaces is a fundamental challenge spanning many disciplines and is of particular importance for designing conductive and stable solid electrolytes for solid-state Li-ion batteries. In this work, we establish a surface science-based approach for assessing the intrinsic stability of oxide materials in contact with Li metal. Through a combination of experimental and computational insights, using Nb-doped SrTiO 3 (Nb/STO) single crystals as a model system, we were able to understand the impact of crystallographic orientation and surface morphology on the extent of the chemical reactions that take place between surface Nb, Ti, and Sr upon reaction with Li. By expanding our approach to investigate the intrinsic stability of the technologically relevant, polycrystalline Nb-doped lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Nb 0.5 O 12 ) system, we found that this material reacts with Li metal through the reduction of Nb, similar to that observed for Nb/STO. These results clearly demonstrate the feasibility of our approach to assess the intrinsic (in)stability of oxide materials for solid-state batteries and point to new strategies for understanding the performance of such systems.

The corrosion of aluminum current collectors and the oxidation of solvents at a relatively high potential have been widely investigated with an aim to stabilize the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries using such components. The corrosion behavior of aluminum current collectors was revisited using a home-build high-precision electrochemical measurement system, and the impact of electrolyte components and the surface protection layer on aluminum foil was systematically studied. The electrochemical results showed that the corrosion of aluminum foil was triggered by the electrochemical oxidation of solvent molecules, like ethylene carbonate, at a relative high potential. The organic radical cations generated from the electrochemical oxidation are energetically unstable and readily undergo a deprotonation reaction that generates protons and promotes the dissolution of Al 3+ from the aluminum foil. This new reaction mechanism can also shed light on the dissolution of transitional metal at high potentials.

Electrocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into energy-rich fuels is considered to be the most efficient approach to achieve a carbon neutral cycle. Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have recently shown a very promising catalytic performance for CO 2 reduction reaction in an ionic liquid electrolyte. Here, we report that the catalytic performance of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), a member of TMDCs, can be significantly improved by using an appropriate dopant. Our electrochemical results indicate that 5% niobium (Nb)-doped vertically aligned MoS 2 in ionic liquid exhibits 1 order of magnitude higher CO formation turnover frequency (TOF) than pristine MoS 2 at an overpotential range of 50-150 mV. The TOF of this catalyst is also 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of Ag nanoparticles over the entire range of studied overpotentials (100-650 mV). Moreover, the in situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry experiment shows the onset overpotential of 31 mV for this catalyst, which is the lowest onset potential for CO 2 reduction reaction reported so far. Our density functional theory calculations reveal that low concentrations of Nb near the Mo edge atoms can enhance the TOF of CO formation by modifying the binding energies of intermediates to MoS 2 edge atoms.

Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries have been recognized as an emerging technology for energy storage systems owing to their high theoretical specific energy. One challenge is to find an electrolyte/cathode system that is efficient, stable, and cost-effective. We present such a system based on molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanoflakes combined with an ionic liquid (IL) that work together as an effective cocatalyst for discharge and charge in a Li-O2 battery. Cyclic voltammetry results show superior catalytic performance for this cocatalyst for both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions compared to Au and Pt catalysts. It also performs remarkably well in the Li-O2 battery system with 85% round-trip efficiency and reversibility up to 50 cycles. Density functional calculations provide a mechanistic understanding of the MoS2 nanoflakes/IL system. The cocatalyst reported in this work could open the way for exploiting the unique properties of ionic liquids in Li-air batteries in combination with nanostructured MoS2 as a cathode material.

The activation of CO2 and its hydrogenation to methanol are of much interest as a way to utilize captured CO2. Here, we investigate the use of size-selected Cu4 clusters supported on Al2O3 thin films for CO2 reduction in the presence of hydrogen. The catalytic activity was measured under near-atmospheric reaction conditions with a low CO2 partial pressure, and the oxidation state of the clusters was investigated by in situ grazing incidence X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The results indicate that size-selected Cu4 clusters are the most active low-pressure catalyst for catalytic CO2 conversion to CH3OH. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Cu4 clusters have a low activation barrier for conversion of CO2 to CH3OH. This study suggests that small Cu clusters may be excellent and efficient catalysts for the recycling of released CO2.

Using the electron paramagnetic resonance technique, we have elucidated the multiple roles of water and carbonates in the overall photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to methane over titania nanoparticles. The formation of H atoms (reduction product) and (•)OH radicals (oxidation product) from water, and CO(3)(-) radical anions (oxidation product) from carbonates, was detected in CO(2)-saturated titania aqueous dispersion under UV illumination. Additionally, methoxyl, (•)OCH(3), and methyl, (•)CH(3), radicals were identified as reaction intermediates. The two-electron, one-proton reaction proposed as an initial step in the reduction of CO(2) on the surface of TiO(2) is supported by the results of first-principles calculations.

We produced millions of morphologically identical platinum catalyst nanoparticles in the form of ordered arrays epitaxially grown on (111), (100), and (110) strontium titanate substrates using electron beam lithography. The ability to design, produce, and characterize the catalyst nanoparticles allowed us to relate microscopic morphologies with macroscopic catalytic reactivities. We evaluated the activity of three different arrays containing different ratios of (111) and (100) facets for an oxygen-reduction reaction, the most important reaction for fuel cells. Increased catalytic activity of the arrays points to a possible cooperative interplay between facets with different affinities to oxygen. We suggest that the surface area of (100) facets is one of the key factors governing catalyst performance in the electrochemical reduction of oxygen molecules.

The potential of titanium dioxide nanoparticles for advanced photochemical applications has prompted a number of studies to analyze the size, phase, and morphology dependent properties. Previously we have used a thermodynamic model of nanoparticles as a function of size and shape to predict the phase stability of titanium dioxide nanoparticles, with particular attention given to the crossover of stability between the anatase and rutile phases. This work has now been extended to titanium dioxide nanoparticles in water, to examine the effects of various adsorption configurations on the equilibrium shape and the phase transition. Density functional calculations have been used to accurately determine surface energies and surface tension of low index hydrated stoichiometric surfaces of anatase and rutile, which are presented along with a brief outline of the surface structure. We have shown that morphology of TiO2 nanocrystals is affected by the presence of water, resulting in variations in the size of the (001) and (001̄) truncation facets in anatase, and a reduction in the aspect ratio of rutile nanocrystals. Our results also highlight that the consideration of hydrated nanocrystal surfaces is necessary to accurately predict the correct size dependence of the anatase to rutile phase transition.
