5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) exists in a wide range of sugar-rich foods and traditional Chinese medicines. The role of 5-HMF in antiviral innate immunity and its mechanism have not been reported previously. In this study, we reveal for the first time that 5-HMF upregulates the production of retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I)-mediated type I interferon (IFN) as a response to viral infection. IFN-β and IFN-stimulated chemokine gene expressions induced by the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) are upregulated in RAW264.7 cells and primary peritoneal macrophages after treatment with 5-HMF, a natural product that appears to inhibit the efficiency of viral replication. Meanwhile, 5-HMF-pretreated mice show enhanced innate antiviral immunity, increased serum levels of IFN-β, and reduced morbidity and viral loads upon infection with VSV. Thus, 5-HMF can be seen to have a positive effect on enhancing type I IFN production. Mechanistically, 5-HMF upregulates the expression of RIG-I in macrophages, resulting in an acceleration of the RIG-I signaling pathway activation. Additionally, STAT1 and STAT2 phosphorylations, along with the expression of IFN-stimulated chemokine genes induced by IFN-α/β, were also enhanced in macrophages cotreated with 5-HMF. In summary, these findings indicate that 5-HMF not only can induce type I IFN production but also can enhance IFN-JAK/STAT signaling, leading to a novel immunomodulatory mechanism against viral infection. In conclusion, our study reveals a previously unrecognized effect of 5-HMF in the antiviral innate immune response and suggests new potential of utilizing 5-HMF for controlling viral infection.

To investigate the dust source of the most polluted equipment in the open-pit mine, this paper studied the temporal-spatial distribution laws of dust migration in the vehicle transportation pavements in the open-pit mine via theoretical analysis and a field test. The results show that the dust concentration of the same horizontal distance from the pavement centerline remains roughly stable, which proves that the dust above the pavements is a continuous line source. In the horizontal direction, the maximum dust and baseline concentration reached heights of 1-3 and 20 m away from the wheels, respectively, while they are obtained at heights of 0.5 and 2.2 m away from the pavement in the vertical distance, respectively. The spatial concentration distribution of the dust clearly proves that the dust movement mode is a jumping mode. It takes 6 and 30 s after the vehicle had passed to achieve the maximum dust and baseline concentration, respectively. The dust concentration of a fully loaded vehicle is 2-3 times greater than that of a no-load vehicle. Meanwhile, the dust concentration of a sprinkling pavement is as 10% as that of an un-sprinkling pavement. The results of the migration of transportation dust and temporal-spatial distribution provide useful references for the analysis of dust source intension and pollutant diffusion in open-pit mines. Furthermore, the efficient and low-cost moisturized dust suppressant would be the future direction to develop in different mining areas.

Iris sibirica biomass (ISBM) used for cobalt (Co) pollution remediation was prepared by one-step pyrolysis and employed to remove elemental mercury (Hg0) from flue gas. Results showed that the ISBM pyrolyzed at 700 °C (ISBM700) exhibited good Hg0 removal performance (about 86%) at 150 °C. The existence of NO and O2 facilitated the removal of Hg0, while SO2 and water vapor inhibited it. Characterization analysis (including N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry) showed that ISBM700 has a relatively higher specific surface area, a quantity of lattice oxygen derived from well-dispersed amorphous-phase CoO x , and abundant oxygen functional groups. A Mars-Maessen mechanism is thought to be involved in the Hg0 removal process. The adsorbed Hg0 could be oxidized to HgO by the surface oxygen species derived from CoO x , and then, the consumed surface oxygen species can be replenished by O2. Therefore, the Co-contaminated I. sibirica biomass (CCIB) from phytoremediation could be utilized for Hg0 removal after being pyrolyzed instead of any chemical modification.

The quantitative structure–property relationship (QSPR) models for predicting the octane number (ON) of toluene primary reference fuel (TPRF; blends of n-heptane, isooctane, and toluene) was investigated. The electrotopological state (E-state) index of TPRF components was computed and weight-summed to generate the quantitative descriptor of TPRF samples. The partial least squares (PLS) technique was used to build up the regression model between the ON and weight-summed E-state index of the investigated samples. The QSPR models for the research octane number (RON) and motor octane number (MON) of TPRF were built. The prediction performance of the obtained PLS models was assessed by the external test set validation and leave-one-out cross-validation. The validation results demonstrate that the proposed PLS models are feasible for predicting the ON, both RON and MON, of TPRF. In addition, several other QSPR models for the ON of TPRF were developed by employing the stepwise regression and Scheffé polynomials methods, and the prediction performance of these models were compared with that of the PLS models. The comparison result shows that the proposed PLS models are slightly better than multiple linear regression models and Scheffé models. It is demonstrated that the combination of the E-state index and PLS is an easy-to-use and promising method for studying and forecasting the ON of TPRF.

Prostate cancer is prevalent among cancers in men. A simple method for screening of reliable biomarkers is pivotal for early detection of prostate cancer. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has been a commonly used biomarker for prostate cancer, in spite of its false-positive limitation. On the other hand, alpha-methylacyl-CoA racemase (AMACR), a metabolic enzyme, has been proven to be a highly expressed biomarker in prostate cancer cells. Therefore, a method or tool, which can detect either PSA or AMACR or both simply, cost effectively, and with high sensitivity and selectivity is desirable. We describe a novel bioconjugated, single-use biosensor capable of detecting both PSA and AMACR antigens in undiluted human serum. The preparation of the biosensor by the bioconjugation mechanism occurred within a day, which could be completed prior to actual testing. The effectiveness of the bioconjugation mechanism and the coverage of the electrode surface of the biosensor were experimentally assessed. Measurements of PSA and AMACR antigens and the specificity of the biosensor were carried out using differential pulse voltammetry. This biosensor was single-use and cost-effective and required a small quantity of test medium and relatively short preparation time, providing a very attractive biosensor for the detection of the biomarkers of prostate cancer.
