Research has been conducted on the supermolecules with the topologies depending on the counteranion. The preparation of these supermolecules via the self-assembly of AgX (X= CF (sub)3 SO (sub)3 (super)-, ClO (sub)4 (super)-, and NO (sub)3 (super)-) with 2-2-aminomethylpyridinedipropionitrile has been carried out and the results of their crystal structure analysis indicate different packing arrangements of the one-dimensional infinite coordination polymers.

The highly efficient synthesis of bicyclo[6.4.0]dodecene derivatives by tandem five component reactions of two molecules of alpha-bromostyrene, two molecules of propargyl bromide, and a dienophile is reported. The study leads to the development of a novel tandem Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling [4 + 4] cycloaddition reaction that allows the rapid synthesis of eight-membered carbocycles starting from alpha-bromovinyl arenes and propargyl bromides in one reaction vessel.

Luminescent silica nanotubes SNT-2 and SNT-3, which are loaded with functional dyes, are prepared by sol-gel cocondensation of functional dyes and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in a cholesterol-based organogel system. It is shown that the emission colors of silicon nanotubes (SNT) were tuned by the introduction of different functional dyes and also this new synthetic methodology can be used to utilize tunable nanometer-sized emitters for optical sensors and luminescence diodes.

The synthesis of a series of photochromic compounds incorporating a phenylquinoline unit and the photophysical and electric transport properties are described. The dyad and polymer with a quinoline unit reveal a high quantum yield due to the enforced antiparallel conformation of the dithienylethene moieties.

Three anion-dependent Ag(I) coordination complexes--specifically, [Ag2(pyim)2(NO3)2] (1), {[Ag(pyim)2]·ClO4·CH3OH·(H2O)1.25}n (2), and [Ag4(pyim)4]·(CF3SO3)4 (3)--were prepared by the reaction of the corresponding silver salts with a rigid ditopic N-terphenyl-substituted 2-(4-pyridyl)imidazole (pyim) ligand possessing an "L"-type coordination vector. Complex 1, in which the nitrate anion acts as a monodentate terminal ligand, exhibits a discrete cyclic dimer structure, whereas complex 2, incorporating a perchlorate anion with weak coordination ability, displays an anion-free one-dimensional (1D) looped chain structure resulting from the Ag sharing of consecutive cyclic dimers. When using a trifluoromethanesulfonate (triflate) as a counteranion with moderate affinity toward the metal center, the resulting complex 3 exhibits an unusual cyclic tetramer structure. In 3, the triflate anions act as bridges between adjacent cyclic tetramers via the weak interaction with the Ag(I) ions, yielding a parquet-like two-dimensional (2D) framework. All three complexes display violet-blue emission, with maxima ranging from 388 to 396 nm. Furthermore, in solution, complex 2 exhibits a substantial emission enhancement, resulting in an emission intensity nearly 2 orders of magnitude greater than those of both the free ligand and the two other Ag(I) complexes, 1 and 3. Counteranions possessing different abilities to coordinate to Ag(I) play important roles in the structural diversity and photoluminescence properties of 1-3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A variety of polyaromatic compounds bearing 1- and 2-naphthyl groups were prepared from the reactions of corresponding halides with tri(1- and 2-naphthyl)indium in good to excellent yields. Thermal, photophysical and electrochemical behaviors of carbazoles having naphthyl groups were studied. They have shown to be promising host and hole transporting materials in organic electroluminescence due to their high thermal stability, electrochemical reversibility and wide band gap.
