Au-Pd bimetallic model catalysts are synthesized as alloy clusters on SiO2 films and are used for a variety of reactions. The surface composition, physical structure, catalytic properties and morphology are characterized which is critical to understand the role Au plays in enhancing the catalytic properties of Pd.

Previous work has shown that lipidnanoparticles (LNP) composedof an ionizable cationic lipid, a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) lipid,distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC), cholesterol, andsmall interfering RNA (siRNA) can be efficiently manufactured employingmicrofluidic mixing techniques. Cryo-transmission electron microscopy(cryo-TEM) and molecular simulation studies indicate that these LNPsystems exhibit a nanostructured core with periodic aqueous compartmentscontaining siRNA. Here we examine first how the lipid compositioninfluences the structural properties of LNP–siRNA systems producedby microfluidic mixing and, second, whether the microfluidic mixingtechnique can be extended to macromolecules larger than siRNA. Itis shown that LNP–siRNA systems can exhibit progressively morebilayer structure as the proportion of bilayer DSPC lipid is increased,suggesting that the core of LNP–siRNA systems can exhibit acontinuum of nanostructures depending on the proportions and structuralpreferences of component lipids. Second, it is shown that the microfluidicmixing technique can also be extended to encapsulation of much largernegatively charged polymers such mRNA (1.7 kb) or plasmid DNA (6 kb).Finally, as a demonstration of the generality of the microfluidicmixing encapsulation process, it is also demonstrated that negativelycharged gold nanoparticles (5 nm diameter) can also be efficientlyencapsulated in LNP containing cationic lipids. Interestingly, thenanostructure of these gold-containing LNP reveals a “currantbun” morphology as visualized by cryo-TEM. Lithium metal is the ultimate anode choice for high energy density rechargeable lithium batteries. However, it suffers from inferior electrochemical performance and safety issues due to its high reactivity and the growth of lithium dendrites. It has long been desired to develop a materials coating on Li metal, which is pinhole-free, mechanically robust without fracture during Li metal deposition and stripping, and chemically stable against Li metal and liquid electrolytes, all while maintaining adequate ionic conductivity. However, such an ideal material coating has yet to be found. Here we report a novel synthesis method by reacting clean molten lithium foil directly with pure nitrogen gas to generate instantaneously a pinhole-free and ionically conductive α-Li3N film directly bonded onto Li metal foil. The film consists of highly textured large Li3N grains (tens of μm) with (001) crystalline planes parallel to the Li metal surface. The bonding between textured grains is strong, resulting in a mechanically robust film which does not crack even when bent to a 0.8 cm curvature radius and is found to maintain pinhole-free coverage during Li metal deposition and stripping. The measured ionic conductivity is up to 5.2 × 10–4 S cm–1, sufficient for maintaining regular current densities for controllable film thicknesses ranging from 2 to 30 μm. This Li3N coating is chemically stable, isolating the reactive metallic lithium from liquid electrolyte, prevents continuous electrolyte consumption during battery cycling, and promotes dendrite-free uniform lithium plating/stripping underneath. We demonstrated Li|Li4Ti5O12 cells with stable and flat potential profiles for 500 cycles without capacity decay or an increase in potential hysteresis.

In “one-bead-one-compound” (OBOC) combinatorial chemistry, a compound-bead library with hundreds of thousands to millions of diversities can be rapidly generated such that each bead displays only one chemical entity. The highly efficient “libraries-from-libraries” approach involves the global transformation of a peptide library into many small molecule solution-phase mixture libraries, but this approach has never been successfully applied to OBOC libraries. Here we report a novel approach that allows us to combine these two enabling technologies to efficiently generate OBOC encoded small molecule bead libraries. By using a topologically segregated bilayer bead and a “ladder-synthesis” method, we can prepare peptide libraries with the peptide on the bead surface and a series of peptide ladders in the bead interior. Various global transformation reactions can then be employed to transform the starting peptide library into a variety of peptidomimetic libraries. During the transformation reactions, the peptide ladders in the bead interior are also transformed in a predictable manner. As a result, individual compound bead can be decoded by analyzing the hydrogen fluoride-released encoding tags with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization Fourier transform mass spectrometry. Using this novel approach, a random encoded dipeptide library was prepared and subsequently transformed into polyamine and poly- N-acetylamine sublibraries. Electrical stimulation has been used clinically as an adjunct therapy to accelerate the healing of bone defects, and its mechanism requires further investigations. The complexity of the physiological microenvironment makes it challenging to study the effect of electrical signal on cells alone. Therefore, an artificial system mimicking cell microenvironment in vitro was developed to address this issue. In this work, a novel electrical stimulation system was constructed based on polypyrrole nanowires (ppyNWs) with a high aspect ratio. Synthesized ppyNWs formed a conductive network in the composited hydrogel which contained modified gelatin with methacrylate, providing a conductive cell culture matrix for bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. The dual-network conductive hydrogel had improved mechanical, electrical, and hydrophilic properties. It was able to imitate the three-dimensional structure of the cell microenvironment and allowed adjustable electrical stimulations in the following system. This hydrogel was integrated with cell culture plates, platinum electrodes, copper wires, and external power sources to construct the artificial electrical stimulation system. The optimum voltage of the electrical stimulation system was determined to be 2 V, which exhibited remarkable biocompatibility. Moreover, this system had significant promotion in cell spreading, osteogenic makers, and bone-related gene expression of stem cells. RNA-seq analysis revealed that osteogenesis was correlated to Notch, BMP/Smad, and calcium signal pathways. It was proven that this biomimetic system could regulate the osteogenesis procedure, and it provided further information about how the electrical signal regulates osteogenic differentiations.

Perovskite multiple quantum wells (MQWs) have shown great potential in the field of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the random formation of QWs with varying well widths ( n numbers) often leads to suboptimal interface defects and charge transport issues. Here, we reveal that the crystallization sequence of bromide-based perovskite MQWs is large- n QWs preceding small- n QWs. With this insight, we prevent the crystallization of subsequent small- n QWs by reducing the crystallization rate, ultimately resulting in the crystallization of only n = 5 QWs. This reduction in the crystallization rate is achieved through the chemical interaction of dual additives with perovskite constituents. Additionally, the chemical interaction effectively passivates the uncoordinated lead ions defects. Consequently, pure-phase perovskite QWs with a high photoluminescence quantum efficiency of 75% are achieved. The resulting green LEDs achieve a peak external quantum efficiency of 17.1% and a maximum luminance of 29,480 cd m -2 , which is attractive for full-color display applications of perovskites.

Lead bromide-based perovskites are promising materials as the top cells of tandem solar cells and for application in various fields requiring high voltages owing to their wide band gaps and excellent environmental resistances. However, several factors, such as the formation of bulk and surface defects, impede the performances of corresponding devices, thereby limiting the efficiencies of these devices as single-junction devices. To reduce the number of defect sites, urea is added to the formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr 3 ) perovskite material to increase its grain size. Nevertheless, urea undesirably reacts with lead(II) bromide (PbBr 2 ) in the perovskite structure, creating unfavorable impurities in the device. To solve this problem, herein, in addition to urea, we introduced formamidinium chloride (FACl) into FAPbBr 3 . Owing to the synergistic effect of urea and FACl, the FAPbBr 3 film quality effectively improved due to suppression of the generation of impurities and stabilization of film crystallinity. Consequently, the FAPbBr 3 single-junction solar cell constructed using FACl and urea as additives demonstrated a power conversion efficiency of 9.6% and an open-circuit voltage of 1.516 V with negligible hysteresis. This study provides new insights into the use of additive engineering for overcoming the energy losses caused by defects in perovskite films.

Cesium lead iodide light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are attractive for displays due to their Rec. 2020 red standard compliance. However, achieving high current efficiencies (CEs), which is important for displays, is challenging because their emission spectrum is near the tail of the photopic luminosity function. Substituting some iodine with bromine can improve CEs by enlarging the bandgap, but defects easily form in iodine-bromine mixed perovskites. Here, we successfully reduced defect formation by adding organic ammonium salts and zwitterions. The organic ammonium salts do not form low-dimensional perovskites under the hydrogen bonding interaction of zwitterions. Instead, they passivate the cesium vacancy by forming new hydrogen bonds after perovskite crystallization. This approach leads to a red perovskite LED with a high CE of 12.8 cd A -1 and a peak external quantum efficiency of 20.3%, meeting the Rec. 2020 standard. It can be extended to large-area devices (2500 mm 2 ) without a significant efficiency loss.

Multiple compounds are related to the development of liver injury, such as toxins, drugs, and environmental pollutants. Although there are reports that the T-2 toxin can cause liver injury, its toxic mechanism remains unclear, which further impedes the development of effective antidotes. In this study, CRISPR-Cas9 genome-wide screening technology was used to identify transformation-related protein 53 inducible nuclear protein 1 (trp53inp1) as a toxic target of the T-2 toxin. Mechanism studies have shown that the T-2 toxin induced pyroptosis of macrophages (J774A.1 cells) by activating the trp53inp1/NF-κB/NLRP3/GSDMD-N pathway, leading to a subacute liver injury. Also, the new drug berberine (BER) identified through virtual screening significantly alleviated the subacute liver injury by competitively binding trp53inp1 via His224; the effect was better than those of the positive control drugs N -acetylcysteine (NAC) and disulfiram (DSF). In summary, the above results indicate that trp53inp1 is a key target for T-2 toxin to induce subacute liver injury and that inhibiting macrophage pyroptosis is a new method for treating liver injury. In addition, this study provides a new method and strategy for the discovery of key disease targets and the search for effective drugs.

Mixing iodide and bromide in three-dimensional metal-halide perovskites is a facile strategy for achieving red light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, these devices often face challenges such as instability in electroluminescence spectra and low brightness due to phase segregation in mixed-halide perovskites. Here, we demonstrate spectrally stable and bright red perovskite LEDs by substituting some of the halide ions with pseudohalogen thiocyanate ions (SCN - ). We find that SCN - can occupy halogen vacancies, thereby releasing microstrain and passivating defects in the perovskite crystals. This leads to the suppression of mixed-halide phase segregation under electrical bias. As a result, the red perovskite LEDs exhibit a high brightness of >35 000 cd m -2 with stable Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.713, 0.282). This brightness surpasses that of the best-performing red perovskite LEDs, showing great promise for advancing perovskite LEDs in display and lighting applications.
