A new Mg-Mg-bonded compound stabilized by a doubly reduced [alpha]-diimine ligand ([[K[(THF).sub.3]].sub.2][LMg-MgL] (L = [[(2,6-[super i][Pr.sub.2][C.sub.6][H.sub.3])NC(Me)].sub.2.sup.2-])) is prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory analysis. The Mg-Mg bond length is shown to be 2.9370(18) [Angstrom].

The synthesis and molecular structure of the second compound with a ZN-Zn bond, RZn-ZnR (R=[{2,6-Pr(super i)(sub 2)C6H3)N(Me)C}(sub 2)CH]), is reported. The NLMO/NPA Zn-Zn bond order of 0.87 and the electron occupancy of the Zn-Zn bonding orbital of 1.9542 are supportive of the intriguing Zn-Zn single bond.

The synthesis and the molecular structure of metallocene-complexed dibismuthene, Cp(sub 2)Zr(BiR)(sub 2) [Cp = C(sub 5)H(sub 5); R = C(sub 6)H(sub 3)-2,6-Mes(sub 2)] is reported. This dark reddish/brown compound that is air- and moisture sensitive, is prepared by sodium metal reduction of Cp(sub 2)ZrCl(sub 2) with RBiCl(sub 2)(super 5).

A series of dinuclear alkaline earth metal (Ae) structures Na2[(CHNH)2Ae–Ae(CHNH)2] (1–5) and (CHNH)2Ae–Ae(CHNH)2(6–10) containing Ae–Ae bonds were optimized using density functional theory (DFT) and hybrid Hatree-Fock/DFT methods. The geometric and NBO analyses indicate that there are covalent Ae–Ae bonds in these α-diimine-stabilized structures, which have been further investigated by NBO second-order interaction and bond dissociation energetic examinations. The article reports on the synthesis of a metallocene-complexed dibismuthene. Although zirconocene dichloride may be best known as a critical component in homogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalytic systems, zirconocene derivatives also show promise in disparate processes, such as nitrogen fixation, where, notably, dinitrogen interacts side-on with zirconium. While similar side-on zirconocene-coordinated diphosphene derivatives have been described, the corresponding zirconocene-complexed heavier dipnictenes like diarsene, distibene, or dibismuthene are unknown.

The article presents information on the chemistry of Zn-Zn bonds. The characterization of various compounds is desirable for the exploration of Zn-Zn bond chemistry. Compounds with homonuclear metal-metal bonds of the heavier group 12 metals, cadmium and mercury, are well-known. Alkali or alkaline earth metal reduction of metal halides, complexed by sterically demanding ligands, has proven to be a fruitful synthetic approach to compounds containing main group metal-metal bonds and main group metal-transition metal bonds.
