Epitaxial growth is a powerful tool for synthesizing heterostructures and integrating multiple functionalities. However, interfacial mixing can readily occur and significantly modify the properties of layered structures, particularly for those containing energy storage materials with smaller cations. Here, we show a two-step sequence involving the growth of an epitaxial LiCoO 2 cathode layer followed by the deposition of a binary transition metal oxide. Orientation-controlled epitaxial synthesis of the model solid-state-electrolyte Li 2 WO 4 and anode material Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 occurs as WO 3 and TiO 2 nucleate and react with Li ions from the underlying cathode. We demonstrate that this lithiation-assisted epitaxy approach can be used for energy materials discovery and exploring different combinations of epitaxial interfaces that can serve as well-defined model systems for mechanistic studies of energy storage and conversion processes.

Muscovite mica (001) is a widely used model surface for controlling molecular assembly and a common substrate for environmental adsorption processes. The mica (001) surface displays near-trigonal symmetry, but many molecular adsorbates-including water-exhibit unequal probabilities of alignment along its three nominally equivalent lattice directions. Buried hydroxyl groups within the muscovite structure are speculated to be responsible, but direct evidence is lacking. Here, we utilize vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy (vSFG) to characterize the orientation and hydrogen-bonding environment of near-surface hydroxyls inside mica. Multiple distinct peaks are detected in the O-H stretch region, which we attribute to Si/Al substitution in the SiO 4 tetrahedron and K + ion adsorption above the hydroxyls based on density functional theory simulations. Our findings demonstrate that vSFG can identify the absolute orientation of -OH groups and, hence, the surface termination at a mica surface, providing a means to investigate how -OH groups influence molecular adsorption and better understand mica stacking-sequences and physical behavior.

The gradual discovery of functional domains in native enamel matrix proteins has enabled the design of smart bioinspired peptides for tooth enamel mimetics and repair. In this study, we expanded upon the concept of biomineralization to design smaller amelogenin-inspired peptides with conserved functional domains for clinical translation. The synthetic peptides displayed a characteristic nanostructured scaffold reminiscent of 'nanospheres' seen in the enamel matrix and effectively controlled apatite nucleation in vitro resulting in the formation of smaller crystallites. Following application of the peptides to sectioned human molar teeth, a robust, oriented, synthetic aprismatic enamel was observed after 7 days of incubation in situ. There was a two-fold increase in the hardness and modulus of the regrown enamel-like apatite layers and an increase in the attachment of the tooth-regrown layer interface compared to control samples. Repeated peptide applications generated multiple enamel-like hydroxyapatite (HAP) layers of limited thickness produced by epitaxial growth in which c -axis oriented nanorods evolved on the surface of native enamel. We conclude that peptide analogues with active domains can effectively regulate the orientation of regenerated HAP layers to influence functional response. In calcified tissues such as bones and teeth, mineralization is regulated by an extracellular matrix, which includes non-collagenous proteins (NCP). This natural process has been adapted or mimicked to restore tissues following physical damage or demineralization by using polyanionic acids in place of NCPs, but the remineralized tissues fail to fully recover their mechanical properties. Here we show that pre-treatment with certain amphiphilic peptoids, a class of peptide-like polymers consisting of N-substituted glycines that have defined monomer sequences, enhances ordering and mineralization of collagen and induces functional remineralization of dentin lesions in vitro . In the vicinity of dentin tubules, the newly formed apatite nano-crystals are co-aligned with the c -axis parallel to the tubular periphery and recovery of tissue ultrastructure is accompanied by development of high mechanical strength. The observed effects are highly sequence-dependent with alternating polar and non-polar groups leading to positive outcomes while diblock sequences have no effect. The observations suggest aromatic groups interact with the collagen while the hydrophilic side chains bind the mineralizing constituents and highlight the potential of synthetic sequence-defined biomimetic polymers to serve as NCP mimics in tissue remineralization.

Developing hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) materials with competing textural characteristics such as surface area and pore volume in one material is difficult to accomplish, particularly for an atomically ordered graphitic carbon. Herein we describe a synthesis strategy to engineer tunable HPC materials across micro-, meso-, and macroporous length scales, allowing the fabrication of a graphitic HPC material (HPC-G) with both very high surface area (>2500 m 2 /g) and pore volume (>11 cm 3 /g), the combination of which has not been attained previously. The mesopore volume alone for these materials is up to 7.53 cm 3 /g, the highest ever reported, higher than even any porous carbon's total pore volume, which for our HPC-G material was >11 cm 3 /g. This HPC-G material was explored for use both as a supercapacitor electrode and for oil adsorption, two applications that require either high surface area or large pore volume, textural properties that are typically exclusive to one another. We accomplished these high textural characteristics by employing ice templating not only as a route for macroporous formation but as a synergistic vehicle that enabled the significant loading of the mesoporous hard template. This design scheme for HPC-G materials can be utilized in broad applications, including electrochemical systems such as batteries and supercapacitors, sorbents, and catalyst supports, particularly supports where a high degree of thermal stability is required.

Li-ion batteries (LIB) have been successfully commercialized after the identification of ethylene-carbonate (EC)-containing electrolyte that can form a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on carbon anode surface to passivate further side reactions but still enable the transportation of the Li + cation. These electrolytes are still utilized, with only minor changes, after three decades. However, the long-term cycling of LIB leads to continuous consumption of electrolyte and growth of SEI layer on the electrode surface, which limits the battery's life and performance. Herein, a new anode protection mechanism is reported in which, upon changing of the cell potential, the electrolyte components at the electrode-electrolyte interface reorganize reversibly to form a transient protective surface layers on the anode. This layer will disappear after the applied potential is removed so that no permanent SEI layer is required to protect the carbon anode. This phenomenon minimizes the need for a permanent SEI layer and prevents its continuous growth and therefore may lead to largely improved performance for LIBs.

Molecular templating and self-assembly are fundamental mechanisms for controlling the morphology of biominerals, while in synthetic two-dimensional layered materials similar levels of control over materials structure can be achieved through the epitaxial relationship with the substrate. In this study these two concepts are combined to provide an approach for the nucleation and growth of three-dimensional ordered mesophases on solid surfaces. A combined experimental and theoretical study revealed how atomic ordering of the substrate controls the structure of surfactant template and the orientation and morphology of the epitaxially grown inorganic material. This dual epitaxial relationship between the substrate, surfactant template, and inorganic mesophase gives rise to a highly ordered porous mesophase with a well-defined cubic lattice of pores. The level of control over the material's three-dimensional architecture achieved in this one-step synthesis is reminiscent of that in biomineralization.

Amelogenin protein is involved in organized apatite crystallization during enamel formation. Brushite (CaHPO 4 ·2H 2 O), one of the precursors of hydroxyapatite mineralization in vitro , has been used for fabrication of biomaterials for hard tissue repair. In order to explore its potential application in biomimetic material synthesis, we studied the influence of the enamel protein amelogenin on brushite morphology and phase transformation to monetite. Our results show that amelogenin can adsorb onto the surface of brushite, leading to the formation of layered morphology on the (010) face. Amelogenin promoted the phase transformation of brushite into monetite (CaHPO 4 ) in the dry state, presumably by interacting with crystalline water layers in brushite unit cells. Changes to the crystal morphology mediated by amelogenin continued even after the phase transformation from brushite to monetite, leading to the formation of organized platelets with an interlocked structure. This effect of amelogenin on brushite morphology and the phase transformation to monetite could provide a new approach to developing biomimetic materials., Competing Interests: Notes The authors declare no competing financial interest.

The interactions between proteins and surfaces are critical to a number of important processes including biomineralization, the biocompatibility of biomaterials, and the function of biosensors. Although many proteins exist as monomers or small oligomers, amelogenin is a unique protein that self-assembles into supramolecular structures called "nanospheres," aggregates of hundreds of monomers that are 20-60 nm in diameter. The nanosphere quaternary structure is observed in solution; however, the quaternary structure of amelogenin adsorbed onto hydroxyapatite (HAP) surfaces is not known even though it may be important to amelogenin's function in forming highly elongated and intricately assembled HAP crystallites during enamel formation. We report studies of the interactions of the enamel protein, amelogenin (rpM179), with a well-defined (100) face prepared by the synthesis of large crystals of HAP. High-resolution in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to directly observe protein adsorption onto HAP at the molecular level within an aqueous solution environment. Our study shows that the amelogenin nanospheres disassemble onto the HAP surface, breaking down into oligomeric (25-mer) subunits of the larger nanosphere. In some cases, the disassembly event is directly observed by in situ imaging for the first time. Quantification of the adsorbate amounts by size analysis led to the determination of a protein binding energy (17.1k(b)T) to a specific face of HAP (100). The kinetics of disassembly are greatly slowed in aged solutions, indicating that there are time-dependent increases in oligomer-oligomer binding interactions within the nanosphere. A small change in the sequence of amelogenin by the attachment of a histidine tag to the N-terminus of rpM179 to form rp(H)M180 results in the adsorption of a complete second layer on top of the underlying first layer. Our research elucidates how supramolecular protein structures interact and break down at surfaces and how small changes in the primary sequence of amelogenin can affect the disassembly process.

An approach to organic-inorganic interfacial structure at the atomic level is a great challenge in the studies of biomineralization. We demonstrate that atomic force microscopy (AFM) is powerful tool to discover the biomineral interface in detail. By using a model system of (100) hydroxyapatite (HAP) face and citrate, it reveals experimentally that only a side carboxylate and a surface calcium ion are involved in the binding effect during the citrate adsorption, which is against the previous understandings by using Langmuir adsorption and computer simulation. Furthermore, the adsorbed citrate molecules can use their free carboxylate and hydroxyl groups to be self-assembled on the HAP surface. AFM examination also finds that the presence of citrate molecules on the HAP crystal faces can enhance the adhesion force of the HAP surface. We suggest that the established AFM method can be used for a precise and direct understanding of biointerfaces at the atomic level.

Potential mechanisms for formation of highly organized biomineralized structures include oriented crystal growth on templates, the aggregation of nanocrystals by oriented attachment, and the assembly of inorganic nanoparticles mediated by organic molecules into aggregated structures. In the present study, the potential role of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) in facilitating the assembly of hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanoparticles into highly ordered structures was evaluated. The physical characteristics of HAP nanoparticles prepared by three different methods were analyzed after extended exposure to additives in solution. Higher order HAP architecture was detected only when the starting particles were aggregates of nanospheres with HAP cores and ACP shells. Enamel-like HAP architecture was produced when the biologic additive was 10 mM glycine or 1.25 microM amelogenin. Large platelike crystals of the type present in bone were induced when the additive was 10 mM glutamic acid. Surface ACP initially links the HAP nanoparticles in a way that allows parallel orientation of the HAP nanoparticles and then is incorporated into HAP by phase transformation to produce a more highly ordered architecture with features that are characteristic for HAP in biologic structures. These studies provide evidence for a new mechanism for assembly of biominerals in which ACP functions by linking HAP nanocrystals while they assume parallel orientations and then is incorporated by phase transformation into HAP molecules that rigidly link HAP nanocrystals in larger fused crystallites. Biologic molecules present during this process of biomineral assembly specifically regulate the assembly kinetics and determine the structural characteristics of the final HAP architecture.

The regulation mechanism of organic additives on the crystallization of inorganic crystal is fundamentally important in biomineralization. Experimentally, it was found that the amino acids glycine (Gly) and glutamic acid (Glu) could lead to the formation of rod- and plate-like hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystallites, respectively. The detailed adsorption behavior of Gly and Glu on HAP crystal faces was studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The specific adsorption sites and patterns of Gly and Glu on the (100) and (001) faces of HAP crystals were revealed at the atomic level. The amino acids adsorbed on the HAP (001) and (100) faces with their positive amino groups occupied vacant calcium sites, and their negative carboxylate groups occupied vacant P or OH sites precisely and formed an ordered adsorption layer. The atomic force microscopy pulling simulation and free energy calculation showed that Glu was much more difficult to depart from the HAP (001) face than that from the (100) face. This result indicated that Glu preferred to adsorb strongly onto the HAP (001) face, which resulted in the formation of plate-like HAP. However, Gly did not show any significantly preferential adsorption between these two HAP faces. Thus, the habits of HAP, rod-like crystallites, were not altered during the HAP crystallization in the presence of Gly. Combined with experimental results, our study demonstrated that the MD simulation of interfacial structures could improve our understanding of biological regulation in mineralization processes at the atomic level.

An additive is not exclusively retardant or promoter for a crystallization system. The kinetic studies of calcium sulfate dihydrate (CSD) crystal growth demonstrated that borax played dual roles in the reaction, which accelerated CSD formations at the low concentration levels but inhibited the crystal growth at the high ones. In situ atomic force microscopy studies revealed that borax modulated the CSD crystallization via two different pathways: promoted the secondary nucleation to increase the step density on the growing crystal faces but simultaneously retarded the spread of these growth steps by the Langmuir adsorption. These two contradictory factors were incorporated in the crystallization, and their balance was regulated by the borax concentration. Both the macroscopic and microscopic experimental data nicely displayed the crystallization model of birth and spread that was able to account for the behaviors of borax in CSD formations.
