Spin-crossover (SCO) coordination cages are at the forefront of research for their potential in crafting next-generation molecular devices. However, due to the scarcity of SCO hosts and their own limited cavities, the interplay between the SCO host and the multiple guests binding has remained elusive. In this contribution, we present a family of pseudo-octahedral coordination cages (M 6 L 4 , M = Zn II , Co II , Fe II , and Ni II ) assembled from a tritopic tridentate ligand L with metal ions. The utilization of Fe II ion leads to the successful creation of the Fe 6 L 4 -type SCO cage. Host-guest studies of these M 6 L 4 cages reveal their capacity to encapsulate four adamantine-based guests. Notably, the spin transition temperature T 1/2 of Fe 6 L 4 is dependent on the multiple guests encapsulated. The inclusion of adamantine yields an unprecedented T 1/2 shift of 54 K, a record shift in guest-mediated SCO coordination cages to date. This drastic shift is ascribed to the synergistic effect of multiple guests coupled with their optimal fit within the host. Through a straightforward thermodynamic cycle, the binding affinities of the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states are separated from their apparent binding constant. This result indicates that the LS state has a stronger binding affinity for the multiple guests than the HS state. Exploring the SCO thermodynamics of host-guest complexes allows us to examine the optimal fit of multiple guests to the host cavity. This study reveals that the T 1/2 of the SCO host can be manipulated by the encapsulation of multiple guests, and the SCO cage is an ideal candidate for determining the multiple guest fit.

Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (Ln III ). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Chiral luminescent lanthanide-organic cages have many potential applications in enantioselective recognition, sensing, and asymmetric catalysis. However, due to the paucity of structures and their limited cavities, host-guest chemistry with lanthanide-organic cages has remained elusive so far. Herein, we report a guest-driven self-assembly and chiral induction approach for the construction of otherwise inaccessible Ln 4 L 4 -type (Ln = lanthanide ions, i.e., Eu III , Tb III ; L = ligand) tetrahedral hosts. Single crystal analyses on a series of host-guest complexes reveal remarkable guest-adaptive cavity breathing on the tetrahedral cages, reflecting the advantage of the variation tolerance on coordination geometry of the f-elements. Meanwhile, noncovalent confinement of pyrene within the lanthanide cage not only leads to diminishment of its excimer emission but also facilitates guest to host energy transfer, opening up a new sensitization window for the lanthanide luminescence on the cage. Moreover, stereoselective self-assembly of either Λ 4 - or Δ 4 - type Eu 4 L 4 cages has been realized via chiral induction with R / S -BINOL or R / S -SPOL templates, as confirmed by NMR, circular dichroism (CD), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with high dissymmetry factors ( g lum ) up to ±0.125.

One important feature of enzyme catalysis is the induced-fit conformational change after binding substrates. Herein, we report a biomimetic water-soluble molecular capsule featuring adaptive structural change toward substrate binding, which offers an ideal platform for efficient photocatalysis. The molecular capsule was coordination-assembled from three anthracene-bridged bis-TPT [TPT = 2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] ligands and six (bpy)Pd(NO 3 ) 2 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). Once substrates bind to its hydrophobic cavity, this capsule would undergo quantitative capsule-to-bowl transformation. Visible-light absorption brought about by both the anthracene units and the charge-transfer absorption on the late-formed quintuple π-π stacked host-guest complex efficiently facilitates aerobic photooxidation for the sulfide guests by visible-light irradiation under mild conditions. Desired turnover numbers and product selectivity (sulfoxide over sulfone) have been achieved by the transformable nature of the catalyst and the hydrophilicity of the sulfoxide product. Such a photocatalytic process enabled by an adaptive coordination capsule and substrates as the allosteric effector paves the way for constructing artificial systems to mimic enzyme catalysis.

Biological macromolecules always function through a collective behavior of the aggregated constituents, which usually are self-assembled together via noncovalent interactions. Likewise, artificial supramolecular assemblies, whose properties and functions are mainly derived from their primary and secondary structures, may also aggregate into high-order architectures with emergent functions not available on the individual components. Here we report the first example of an insulin-like hexamerization of lanthanide triple helicates toward a 4 nm diameter hexameric capsule via consecutive metal-directed and anion-directed assembly processes. Hierarchical chiral-sorting self-assembly endows hexamers with aggregation-induced stability and emission enhancement. Furthermore, emergent guest-encapsulation function and enantioselectivity toward terpene drugs have been realized in the late-formed central cavity of the hexamers. This study not only provides a feasible strategy for constructing sophisticated and multifunctional lanthanide-organic materials but also sheds some light on the self-assembly processes in nature.

Parastichy, the spiral arrangement of plant organs, is an example of the long-range apparent order seen in biological systems. These ordered arrangements provide scientists with both an aesthetic challenge and a mathematical inspiration. Synthetic efforts to replicate the regularity of parastichy may allow for molecular-scale control over particle arrangement processes. Here we report the packing of a supramolecular truncated cuboctahedron (TCO) into double-helical (DH) nanowires on a graphite surface with a non-natural parastichy pattern ascribed to the symmetry of the TCOs and interactions between TCOs. Such a study is expected to advance our understanding of the design inputs needed to create complex, but precisely controlled, hierarchical materials. It is also one of the few reported helical packing structures based on Platonic or Archimedean solids since the discovery of the Boerdijk-Coxeter helix. As such, it may provide experimental support for studies of packing theory at the molecular level.

Transformations within container-molecules provide a good alternative between traditional homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, as the containers themselves can be regarded as single molecular nanomicelles. We report here the designed-synthesis of a water-soluble redox-active supramolecular Pd 4 L 2 cage and its application in the encapsulation of aromatic molecules and polyoxometalates (POMs) catalysts. Compared to the previous known Pd 6 L 4 cage, our results show that replacement of two cis-blocked palladium corners with p-xylene bridges through pyridinium bonds formation between the 2,4,6-tri-4-pyridyl-1,3,5-triazine (TPT) ligands not only provides reversible redox-activities for the new Pd 4 L 2 cage, but also realizes the expansion and subdivision of its internal cavity. An increased number of guests, including polyaromatics and POMs, can be accommodated inside the Pd 4 L 2 cage. Moreover, both conversion and product selectivity (sulfoxide over sulfone) have also been much enhanced in the desulfurization reactions catalyzed by the POMs@Pd 4 L 2 host-guest complexes. We expect that further photochromic or photoredox functions are possible taking advantage of this new generation of organo-palladium cage.

Functional molecular capsules have attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of their potential applications as chemosensors, catalysis, drug carriers, and so on. We report here the coordination-directed self-assembly of a fluorescent-lantern-type molecular capsule from four tetraphenylethylene-based ditopic ligands and two square-planar palladium(II) ions. The capsule has been thoroughly characterized by UV-vis, 1D/2D NMR, electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The aggregation-induced emission performance of the capsule has been studied by tuning the ratio of mixed solvents. Moreover, with an open cavity, the fluorescence of the capsule also displays anion sensitivity, with the best turn-on responsiveness observed for HCO 3 - , demonstrating for the first time an encapsulation-induced emission property.

Luminescent supramolecular lanthanide edifices have many potential applications in biology, environments, and materials science. However, it is still a big challenge to improve the luminescent performance of multinuclear lanthanide assemblies in contrast to their mononuclear counterparts. Herein, we demonstrate that combination of intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) sensitization and coordination-driven self-assembly gives birth to bright Eu III tetrahedral cages with a record emission quantum yield of 23.1%. The ILCT sensitization mechanism has been unambiguously confirmed by both time-dependent density functional theory calculation and femtosecond transient absorption studies. Meanwhile, dual-responsive sensing toward both anions and cations has been demonstrated making use of the ILCT transition on the ligand. Without introduction of additional recognition units, high sensitivity and selectivity are revealed for the cage in both turn-off luminescent sensing toward I - and turn-on sensing toward Cu 2+ . This study offers important design principles for the future development of luminescent lanthanide molecular materials.

Lanthanide-containing molecules have many potential applications in material science and biology, that is, luminescent sensing/labling, MRI, magnetic refrigeration, and catalysis among others. Coordination-directed self-assembly has shown great power in the designed construction of well-defined supramolecular systems. However, application of this strategy to the lanthanide edifices is challenging due to the complicated and greatly labile coordination numbers and geometries for lanthanides. Here we demonstrate a sensitive structural switching phenomenon during the stereocontrolled self-assembly of a group of Ln 2n L 3n (Ln for lanthanides, L for organic ligands, and n = 1, 2, 4) compounds. Systematic variation of the offset distances between the two chelating arms on the bis(tridentate) ligands dictated the final outcomes of the lanthanide assembly, ranging from Ln 2 L 3 helicates and Ln 4 L 6 tetrahedra to Ln 8 L 12 cubes. Remarkably, the borderline case leading to the formation of a mixture of the helicate and the tetrahedron was clearly revealed. Moreover, the concentration-dependent self-assembly of an unprecedented cubic Ln 8 L 12 complex was also confirmed. The luminescent lanthanide cubes can serve as excellent turn-off sensors in explosives detection, featuring high selectivity and sensitivity toward picric acid. All complexes were confirmed by NMR, ESI-TOF-MS, and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Our results provide valuable design principles for the coordination self-assembly of multinuclear functional lanthanide architectures.

Coordination-directed self-assembly has become a well-established technique for the construction of functional supramolecular structures. In contrast to the most often exploited transition metals, trivalent lanthanides Ln(III) have been less utilized in the design of polynuclear self-assembled structures despite the wealth of stimulating applications of these elements. In particular, stereochemical control in the assembly of lanthanide chiral cage compounds is not easy to achieve in view of the usually large lability of the Ln(III) ions. We report here the first examples of stereoselective self-assembly of chiral luminescent europium coordination tetrahedral cages and their intriguing self-sorting behavior. Two pairs of R and S ligands are designed on the basis of the pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide coordination unit, bis(tridentate) L1 and tris(tridentate) L2. Corresponding chiral Eu4(L1)6 and Eu4(L2)4 topological tetrahedral cages are independently assembled via edge- and face-capping design strategies, respectively. The chirality of the ligand is transferred during the self-assembly process to give either Δ or Λ metal stereochemistry. The self-assembled cages are characterized by NMR, high-resolution ESI-TOF-MS, and in one case by X-ray crystallography. Strict control of stereoselectivity is confirmed by CD spectroscopy and NMR enantiomeric differentiation experiments. Narcissistic self-sorting is observed in the self-assembly process when two differently shaped ligands L1 and L2 are mixed. More impressively, distinct self-sorting behavior between Eu4(L1)6 and Eu4(L2)4 coordination cages is observed for the first time when racemic mixtures of ligands are used. We envisage that chiral luminescent lanthanide tetrahedral cages could be used in chiroptical probes\sensors and enantioselective catalysis.

Metal-metal bonding interactions have been used to generate a number of unique supramolecular assemblies with fascinating functions. We presented here a new class of gold(I)-containing metallosupramolecular cages and cage-built two-dimensional (2-D) arrays of {Au8L2}n (n = 1 or ∞, L = tetrakis-dithiocarbamato-calix[4]arene, TDCC), 1-3, which are constructed from the self-assembly of deep-cavitand calix[4]arene-based supramolecular cages consisting of octanuclear Au(I) motifs. Synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction structural analyses of 1-3 revealed their quadruple-stranded helicate dimeric cage structure and the presence of 2-D arrays of cages linked together by inter- and intramolecular Au(I)···Au(I) interactions. Electronic absorption and emission studies of complexes 1-3 indicated the occurrence of a programmable self-assembly process in a concentration-dependent stepwise manner with the links built via aurophilic interactions. These novel gold(I) supramolecular cages exhibited green phosphorescence and have been shown to serve as highly selective proof-of-concept luminescent sensors toward Ag(I) cation among various competitive transition-metal ions.

The synthesis of a novel supramolecular tetrahedral assembly of K12Ga4L6 stoichiometry is reported. The newly designed chiral ligand exhibits high diastereoselective control during cluster formation, leading exclusively to a single diastereomer of the desired host. This new assembly also exhibits high stability toward oxidation or a low pH environment and is a more robust and efficient catalyst for asymmetric organic transformations of neutral substrates.

M12L24 spherical complexes incorporating 24 free pyridine rings on their interior or exterior surfaces were synthesized via the self-assembly of tridentate tris(pyridine) ligands with Pd(2+) ions. Coordination of secondary metal ions in the interior of the spherical framework was achieved through interactions of 24 Ag(+) ions with the free endo pyridine rings.

By employing functional diimine ligands coordinated dipalladium(II,II) or diplatinum(II,II) clips as corners and the coplanar 4,4'-bipyrazolate dianion (L(2-)) ligand as linker, a series of bipyrazolate-bridged metallo-macrocycles, namely, [M8L4](NO3)8 (M = Pd(dmbpy), 1; Pd(bpy), 2; Pt(bpy), 3a; Pd(phen), 4; Pt(phen), 5; Pd(15-crown-5-phen), 6; Pd(18-crown-6-phen), 8; Pd(benzo-24-crown-8-phen), 10a; Pt(15-crown-5-phen), 7a, Pt(18-crown-6-phen), 9a; Pt(benzo-24-crown-8-phen), 11a) and [M6L3](NO3)6 (M = Pt(bpy), 3b; Pt(15-crown-5-phen), 7b; Pt(18-crown-6-phen), 9b; Pd(benzo-24-crown-8-phen), 10b; Pt(benzo-24-crown-8-phen), 11b), have been synthesized through a directed self-assembly approach that involves spontaneous deprotonation of the 1H-bipyrazolyl ligands in aqueous solution. All these compounds have a crown-shaped cavity that can serve as host to solvent molecules and anions. The structures are characterized by elemental analysis, (1)H and (13)C NMR, ESI-MS, and in the cases of 1a (the BF4(-) salt of 1), 2a (the BF4(-) salt of 2), and 3b by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Photophysical properties for complexes 1 and 2 are discussed.
