Research describing the characteristics of organic reactions taking place between solid particles at macroscopic level is presented. Particular attention is given to the formation of liquid phases as a result of grinding two solid elements.

The article reflects on the supervision and training of postgraduate students in Great Britain in the field of green, or sustainable chemistry leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Observation shows a shift from education to a training process in preparing PhD chemist students. To ensure that PhDs are completed in time, students and supervisors are pressured during the writing of dissertation. The increased risk associated with taking on difficult problems is also considered one of the compromises engendered by the focus on completion of a thesis in the requisite time. As postdoctoral chemists transfer from the academia to the industry, they find the need to have skills of teamwork, flexibility and critical thinking in addition to their specialist knowledge and expertise.

Electrostatic attractions are essential in any complex formation between the nanofibrils of the opposite charge for a specific application, such as microcapsule production. Here, we used cationized cellulose nanofibril (CCNF)-stabilized Pickering emulsions (PEs) as templates, and the electrostatic interactions were induced by adding oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (OCNFs) at the oil-water interface to form microcapsules (MCs). The oppositely charged cellulose nanofibrils enhanced the solidity of interfaces, allowing the encapsulation of Nile red (NR) in sunflower oil droplets. Microcapsules exhibited a low and controlled release of NR at room temperature. Furthermore, membrane emulsification was employed to scale up the preparation of microcapsules with sunflower oil (SFO) encapsulated by CCNF/OCNF complex networks.

Surface hydrophobization of cellulose nanomaterials has been used in the development of nanofiller-reinforced polymer composites and formulations based on Pickering emulsions. Despite the well-known effect of hydrophobic domains on self-assembly or association of water-soluble polymer amphiphiles, very few studies have addressed the behavior of hydrophobized cellulose nanomaterials in aqueous media. In this study, we investigate the properties of hydrophobized cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and their self-assembly and amphiphilic properties in suspensions and gels. CNCs of different hydrophobicity were synthesized from sulfated CNCs by coupling primary alkylamines of different alkyl chain lengths (6, 8, and 12 carbon atoms). The synthetic route permitted the retention of surface charge, ensuring good colloidal stability of hydrophobized CNCs in aqueous suspensions. We compare surface properties (surface charge, ζ potential), hydrophobicity (water contact angle, microenvironment probing using pyrene fluorescence emission), and surface activity (tensiometry) of different hydrophobized CNCs and hydrophilic CNCs. Association of hydrophobized CNCs driven by hydrophobic effects is confirmed by X-ray scattering (SAXS) and autofluorescent spectroscopy experiments. As a result of CNC association, CNC suspensions/gels can be produced with a wide range of rheological properties depending on the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance. In particular, sol-gel transitions for hydrophobized CNCs occur at lower concentrations than hydrophilic CNCs, and more robust gels are formed by hydrophobized CNCs. Our work illustrates that amphiphilic CNCs can complement associative polymers as modifiers of rheological properties of water-based systems.

There is a growing appreciation that engineered biointerfaces can regulate cell behaviors, or functions. Most systems aim to mimic the cell-friendly extracellular matrix environment and incorporate protein ligands; however, the understanding of how a ligand-free system can achieve this is limited. Cell scaffold materials comprised of interfused chitosan-cellulose hydrogels promote cell attachment in ligand-free systems, and we demonstrate the role of cellulose molecular weight, MW, and chitosan content and MW in controlling material properties and thus regulating cell attachment. Semi-interpenetrating network (SIPN) gels, generated from cellulose/ionic liquid/cosolvent solutions, using chitosan solutions as phase inversion solvents, were stable and obviated the need for chemical coupling. Interface properties, including surface zeta-potential, dielectric constant, surface roughness, and shear modulus, were modified by varying the chitosan degree of polymerization and solution concentration, as well as the source of cellulose, creating a family of cellulose-chitosan SIPN materials. These features, in turn, affect cell attachment onto the hydrogels and the utility of this ligand-free approach is extended by forecasting cell attachment using regression modeling to isolate the effects of individual parameters in an initially complex system. Fe(III) montmorillonite clay that was partially exchanged with hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA(+)) cations achieved increased catalytic activity for the oxidative coupling of hydrophobic organic substrates. A series of mixed-cation organoclays were produced, where the organic cation content ranged from 6 to 50% relative to the cation-exchange capacity (CEC) of the clay, and were tested for catalytic activity using different Fe(III)-mediated oxidative coupling reactions. Enhanced catalytic activity by Fe(3+)/HDTMA(+) montmorillonite for coupling hydrophobic substrates was observed, with maximum catalytic activity in the oxidative coupling of 2-naphthol observed at 6% HDTMA(+) coverage. However, maximum catalytic activity with a more hydrophobic substrate, anthrone, was achieved with 50% HDTMA(+) coverage, indicating that matching levels of organic modification to substrate hydrophobicity improves catalytic activity. The organization of the organic cations at the clay surfaces proved to be heterogeneous, as determined by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and powder X-ray diffraction. Results from molecular dynamics simulations supported the heterogeneous nature of the catalysts but also pointed toward large regions within the interlayers that may be filled with nonreactive hydrated Fe oxides resulting from the organic cation treatment. The exchangeable Fe content of the organic treated clays, as determined by AAS and ICP measurements, was observed to be higher than expected relative to that of Fe-saturated clay, substantiating this hypothesis. These findings have implications for the development of substrate-specific clay catalysts, where the composition and configuration of exchangeable cations can be matched to a particular substrate or reaction.

Dynamin I is a GTPase enzyme required for endocytosis and is an excellent target for the design of potential endocytosis inhibitors. Screening of a library of tyrphostins, in our laboratory, against the GTPase activity of dynamin I gave rise to a microM potent lead, 2-cyano-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)thioacrylamide (1, IC50 70 microM). Our initial investigations suggested that only the dimeric form of 1 displayed dynamin I GTPase inhibitory activity. Subsequent synthetic iterations were based on dimeric analogues and afforded a number of small molecules, low microM potent, inhibitors of dynamin I GTPase, in particular, symmetrical analogues with a minimum of two free phenolic -OHs: catechol-acrylamide (9) (IC50= 5.1 +/- 0.6 microM), its 3,4,5-trihydroxy congener (10) (IC50= 1.7 +/- 0.2 microM), and the corresponding 3-methyl ether (11) (IC50= 9 +/- 3 microM). Increasing the length of the central alkyl spacer from ethyl to propyl (22-24) afforded essentially identical activity with IC50's of 1.7 +/- 0.2, 1.7 +/- 0.2, and 5 +/- 1 microM, respectively. No decrease in activity was noted until the introduction of a hexyl spacer. Our studies highlight the requirement for two free amido NHs with neither the mono-N-methyl (86) nor the bis-N-methyl (87) analogues inhibiting dynamin I GTPase. A similar effect was noted for the removal of the nitrile moieties. However, modest potency was observed with the corresponding ester analogues of 9-11: ethyl ester (90), propyl ester (91), and butyl ester (92), with IC50's of 42 +/- 3, 38 +/- 2, and 61 +/- 2 microM, respectively. Our studies reveal the most potent and promising dynamin I GTPase inhibitor in this series as (22), which is also known as BisT.

[reaction: see text] A new, green, regioselective, one-step, multicomponent reaction of an aldehyde possessing a nonenolizable carbonyl function, cyclohex-2-enone (or a derivative thereof), and primary or secondary amines afforded 2-N-substituted arylmethyl anilines or 4-N,N-disubstituted arylmethyl anilines, respectively. Yields and regioselectivities were good. Evidence for a pathway involving imine and iminium intermediates is presented along with examples demonstrating amenability of the process to combinatorial chemistry.

[reaction: see text] Members of a new family of macrocycles have been synthesized in one step, from simple building blocks, by sequential Claisen-Schmidt condensations.

[reaction: see text] Novel macrocycles possessing ether linkages and 2,6-disubstituted phenolics were produced in one step and with 100% atom economy by isoaromatization of chameleon macrocyclic precursors possessing 2,6-diarylidenecyclohexanone moieties. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding of the phenolic hydrogen atoms influenced the shape of the macrocycles and dictated host-guest behavior.

[reaction: see text] Aryl alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes were synthesized, in moderate to excellent yields, with use of dimethylammonium dimethyl carbamate (DIMCARB) as a recyclable reaction medium and as a catalyst.
