Isomorphs are curves in the thermodynamic phase diagram of invariant excess entropy, structure, and dynamics, while pseudoisomorphs are curves of invariant structure and dynamics, but not of the excess entropy. The latter curves have been shown to exist in molecular models with flexible bonds [Olsen, A. E. J. Chem. Phys. 2016, 145, 241103]. We here present three force-based methods to trace out pseudoisomorphs based on a single configuration and test them on the asymmetric dumbbell and 10-bead Lennard-Jones chain models with bonds modeled as harmonic springs. The three methods are based on requiring that particle forces, center-of-mass forces, and torques, respectively, are invariant in reduced units. For each of the two investigated models we identify a method that works well for tracing out pseudoisomorphs, but these methods are not the same. Overall, we find that the more internal degrees of freedom there are in the molecule studied, the less they appear to affect the gross dynamical behavior. Moreover, the "internal" degrees of freedom (including rotation) do not significantly affect the scaling behavior of the dynamical/transport coefficients provided some 'quenching' is performed.

Isomorphs are curves in the thermodynamic phase diagram along which structure and dynamics are invariant to a good approximation. There are two main ways to trace out isomorphs, the configurational-adiabat method and the direct-isomorph-check method. Recently a new method based on the scaling properties of forces was introduced and shown to work very well for atomic systems [T. B. Schrøder, Phys. Rev. Lett. 2022, 129, 245501]. A unique feature of this method is that it only requires a single equilibrium configuration for tracing out an isomorph. We here test generalizations of this method to molecular systems and compare to simulations of three simple molecular models: the asymmetric dumbbell model of two Lennard-Jones spheres, the symmetric inverse-power-law dumbbell model, and the Lewis-Wahnström o -terphenyl model. We introduce and test two force-based and one torque-based methods, all of which require just a single configuration for tracing out an isomorph. Overall, the method based on requiring invariant center-of-mass reduced forces works best.

Polydisperse systems of particles interacting by the purely repulsive exponential (EXP) pair potential are studied in regard to how structure and dynamics vary along isotherms, isochores, and isomorphs. The sizable size polydispersities of 23%, 29%, 35%, and 40%, as well as energy polydispersity 35%, were considered. For each system an isomorph was traced out covering about one decade in density. For all systems studied, the structure and dynamics vary significantly along the isotherms and isochores but are invariant to a good approximation along the isomorphs. We conclude that the single-component EXP system's hidden scale invariance (implying isomorph invariance of structure and dynamics) is maintained even when a sizable polydispersity is introduced into the system.

Many liquids have curves (isomorphs) in their phase diagrams along which structure, dynamics, and some thermodynamic quantities are invariant in reduced units. A substantial part of their phase diagrams is thus effectively one dimensional. The shapes of these isomorphs are described by a material-dependent function of density, h(ρ), which for real liquids is well approximated by a power law, ρ(γ). However, in simulations, a power law is not adequate when density changes are large; typical models, such as Lennard-Jones liquids, show that γ(ρ) ≡ d ln h(ρ)/d ln ρ is a decreasing function of density. This article presents results from computer simulations using a new pair potential that diverges at a nonzero distance and can be tuned to give a more realistic shape of γ(ρ). Our results indicate that the finite size of molecules is an important factor to take into account when modeling liquids over a large density range.

In this paper we compare the Wolf method to the shifted forces (SF) method for efficient computer simulation of bulk systems with Coulomb forces, taking results from the Ewald summation and particle mesh Ewald methods as representing the true behavior. We find that for the Hansen-McDonald molten salt model the SF approximation overall reproduces the structural and dynamical properties as accurately as does the Wolf method. It is shown that the optimal Wolf damping parameter depends on the property in focus and that neither the potential energy nor the radial distribution function are useful measures for the convergence of the Wolf method to the Ewald summation method. The SF approximation is also tested for the SPC/Fw model of liquid water at room temperature, showing good agreement with both the Wolf and the particle mesh Ewald methods; this confirms previous findings [Fennell, C. J.; Gezelter, J. D. J. Chem. Phys.2006, 124, 234104]. Besides its conceptual simplicity, the SF approximation implies a speed-up of a factor of 2-3 compared to the Wolf method. We conclude that for the systems studied, whenever the Wolf method gives accurate results, it may be replaced by the simpler and faster SF method.

Isomorphs are curves in the phase diagram along which a number of static and dynamic quantities are invariant in reduced units (Gnan, N.; et al. J. Chem. Phys.2009, 131, 234504). A liquid has good isomorphs if and only if it is strongly correlating, i.e., if the equilibrium virial/potential energy fluctuations are more than 90% correlated in the NVT ensemble. Isomorphs were previously discussed with a focus on atomic systems. This paper generalizes isomorphs to liquids composed of rigid molecules and study the isomorphs of systems of small rigid molecules: the asymmetric dumbbell model, a symmetric inverse power-law dumbbell, and the Lewis-Wahnström o-terphenyl (OTP) model. For all model systems, the following quantities are found to a good approximation to be invariant along an isomorph: the isochoric heat capacity, the excess entropy, the reduced molecular center-of-mass self-part of the intermediate scattering function, and the reduced molecular center-of-mass radial distribution function. In agreement with theory, we also find that an instantaneous change of temperature and density from an equilibrated state point to an isomorphic state point leads to no relaxation. The isomorphs of the Lewis-Wahnström OTP model were found to be more approximative than those of the asymmetric dumbbell model; this is consistent with the OTP model being less strongly correlating. The asymmetric dumbbell and Lewis-Wahnström OTP models each have a "master isomorph"; i.e., the isomorphs have identical shape in the virial/potential energy phase diagram.

This paper reports all-atom computer simulations of five phospholipid membranes (DMPC, DPPC, DMPG, DMPS, and DMPSH) with focus on the thermal equilibrium fluctuations of volume, energy, area, thickness, and chain order. At constant temperature and pressure, volume and energy exhibit strong correlations of their slow fluctuations (defined by averaging over 0.5 ns). These quantities, on the other hand, do not correlate significantly with area, thickness, or chain order. The correlations are mainly reported for the fluid phase, but we also give some results for the ordered (gel) phase of two membranes, showing a similar picture. The cause of the observed strong correlations is identified by splitting volume and energy into contributions from tails, heads, and water, and showing that the slow volume-energy fluctuations derive from van der Waals interactions of the tail region; they are thus analogous to the similar strong correlations recently observed in computer simulations of the Lennard-Jones and other simple van der Waals type liquids (U. R. Pedersen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 2008, 100, 015701). The strong correlations reported here confirm one crucial assumption of a recent theory for nerve signal propagation proposed by Heimburg and Jackson (T. Heimburg and A. D. Jackson, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 2005, 102, 9790-9795).
