Thermoresponsive hydrogels present unique properties, such as tunable mechanical performance or changes in volume, which make them attractive for applications including wound healing dressings, drug delivery vehicles, and implants, among others. This work reports the implementation of bioinspired thermoresponsive hydrogels composed of xyloglucan (XG) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Starting from tamarind seed XG (XGt), thermoresponsive XG was obtained by enzymatic degalactosylation (DG-XG), which reduced the galactose residue content by ∼50% and imparted a reversible thermal transition. XG with native composition and comparable molar mass to DG-XG was produced by an ultrasonication treatment (XGu) for a direct comparison of behavior. The hydrogels were prepared by simple mixing of DG-XG or XGu with CNCs in water. Phase diagrams were established to identify the ratios of DG-XG or XGu to CNCs that yielded a viscous liquid, a phase-separated mixture, a simple gel, or a thermoresponsive gel. Gelation occurred at a DG-XG or XGu to CNC ratio higher than that needed for the full surface coverage of CNCs and required relatively high overall concentrations of both components (tested concentrations up to 20 g/L XG and 30 g/L CNCs). This is likely a result of the increase in effective hydrodynamic volume of CNCs due to the formation of XG-CNC complexes. Investigation of the adsorption behavior indicated that DG-XG formed a more rigid layer on CNCs compared to XGu. Rheological properties of the hydrogels were characterized, and a reversible thermal transition was found for DG-XG/CNC gels at 35 °C. This thermoresponsive behavior provides opportunities to apply this system widely, especially in the biomedical field, where the mechanical properties could be further tuned by adjusting the CNC content.

An in-depth study of metal assisted chemical etching (MACE) of p-type c-Si in HF/H 2 O 2 aqueous solutions using Pt nanoparticles as catalysts is presented. Combination of cyclic voltammetry, open circuit measurements, chronoamperometry, impedance spectroscopy, and 2D band bending modeling of the metal/semiconductor/electrolyte interfaces at the nanoscale and under different etching conditions allows gaining physical insights into this system. Additionally, in an attempt to mimic the etching conditions, the modeling has been performed with a positively biased nanoparticle buried in the Si substrate. Following these findings, the application of an external polarization during etching is introduced as a novel efficient approach for achieving straightforward control of the pore morphology by acting upon the band bending at the Si/electrolyte junction. In this way, nanostructures ranging from straight mesopores to cone-shaped macropores are obtained as the Si sample is biased from negative to positive potentials. Remarkably, macroscopic cone-shaped pores in the 1-5 μm size range with a high aspect ratio (L/W ∼ 1.6) are obtained by this method. This morphology leads to a reduction of the surface reflectance below 5% over the entire VIS-NIR domain, which outperforms macrostructures made by state of the art texturization techniques for Si solar cells.

Dietary fibers (DF) are one of the nutritional benefits of fleshy fruit consumption that is becoming a quality criterion for genetic selection by breeders. However, the AOAC total DF content determination is not readily amenable for screening large fruit collections. A new screening method of DF content in an apple collection based on the automated preparation of cell wall material as an alcohol-insoluble residue (AIR) is proposed. The yield of AIR from 27 apple genotypes was compared with DF measured according to AOAC method 985.29. Although residual protein content in AIRs did not affect DF measurement, subtraction of starch content above 3% dry weight in AIRs was needed to agree with AOAC measured DF. A fast colorimetric screening of starch in AIR was developed to detect samples needing correction. The proposed method may prove useful for the rapid determination of DF in collections of other fleshy fruit besides apple.

Prebiotics constitute emerging tools to alleviate immune pathologies. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of prebiotic exposure during perinatal and postweaning periods on immune and gut regulations. Mice were fed either a galactooligosaccharides/inulin prebiotic mix-enriched diet or a control diet during the perinatal and/or postweaning periods. Biomarkers related to gut barrier function (SCFA, heat shock proteins, zonula occludens protein-1, and mucin-2) and immune mechanisms (IgA, IgE, IgG1, IgG2a, IL-10, TGF-β, IL-4, IL-17A, and IFN-γ) were analyzed. The milk of dams fed the prebiotic diet was more concentrated in both IgA and TGF-β when prebiotics were introduced during both the perinatal and postweaning periods; IL-10, IgA, and IgG2a were increased in pups; and expression of intestinal markers was more pronounced. Postweaning exposure to prebiotics alone induced higher INF-γ and TGF-β levels, whereas IgA levels fell. Combined exposure periods (perinatal/postweaning) to prebiotics increased tolerance-related immunoglobulins in pups and reinforced gut barrier functions.

Glycosylation often mediates important biological processes through the interaction of carbohydrates with complementary proteins. Most chemical tools for the functional analysis of glycans are highly dependent upon various linkage chemistries that involve the reducing terminus of carbohydrates. However, because of ring opening, the structural integrity of the reducing sugar ring (pyranose or furanose) is lost during these techniques, resulting in derivatized carboydrates that markedly differ from the parent molecule. This paper describes a new aqueous-based, one-pot strategy that involves first converting the sugar to a C-glycoside ketone, followed by conversion to ketohydrazones or oximes. Hence, the C-glycoside ketones are tagged with fluorescence, colored, cationic or biotin-labeled groups or immobilized onto hydrazine-functionalized beads. No activating or protecting groups are required, and the chemistry is mild enough for a wide range of carbohydrates. We demonstrate the versatility of the approach to diverse glycans, including bead immobilization and lectin analysis of acarbose, an antidiabetic drug, to dabsyl-tagged enzyme substrates to screen cellulases, and for the analysis of plant cell wall hemicellulosics.
