A series of (thioalkyl)-closo-carborane ligands are synthesized with varying alkyl chain lengths and isomeric carbonates. A series of novel, brightly colored platinum(II)-trpy complexes containing these ligands are also prepared and fully characterized by means of multinuclear (super 1)H, (super 13)C, (super 11)B, and (super 195)Pt) 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS and for the 1,7-carborane derivative, X-ray crystallography.

A range of novel, dinuclear organoplatinum(II) compounds of nicotinic acid, isonicotinic acid, and nicotinamide have been prepared.

The first known metallacycles known have been synthesized through the oxidative addition of tin-sulfur, tin-selenium, tin-tellurium and germanium-tellurium bonds to platinum(II). The syntheses were carried out under a nitrogen atmosphere using standard Schlenk procedures. Their physical properties were then studied through 1H, 119Sn and 195Pt nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. These complexes have catalytic properties and undergo unique distribution reactions. The order of reactivity of the group 14-group 16 bonds is Sn-Te, Ge-Te >> Sn-Se > Sn-S although the Ge-Se and Ge-S bonds were inert.

A study was conducted on the mechanisms of oxidative addition reaction. Photochemical and thermal cleaving of chemical bonds in several group 14, 16 and 17 substrates were achieved through nitrogen-donor ligand oxidative addition to organoplatinum(II) complexes. The ligands electronic and steric attributes were found to enhance platinum(II) complex reactivity and platinum(IV) stability.

The mass spectroscopy technique and X-ray analysis were used to research the cis-hydroxyplatination process of dimethyl maleate. The aqueous acid cleavage of the CH(CO2Me)CH(OH)(CO2Me) group forms the hydration product of dimethyl meleate. The Pt-OH bond of cis-Pt(OH)(Me)(PPh3)2 undergoes syn addition to the C=C bond of dimethyl maleate to give the Pt-C bonded complex cis-PtMe{CH(CO2Me)CH(OH)(CO2Me)}-(PPh3)2.

The preparation of sigma-carbon bonded complexes of platinum(II) and palladium(II) containing 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane (9S3) was described. The X-ray crystal structure of Pt(C6H5)2(9S3) showed that the platinum atom is bound to two sulfur atoms of bidentate 9S3 and to two cis-phenyl groups. The organoplatinum(IV)and organopalladium(IV) complexes of 9S3 show no tendency to form organometal(II) complexes, demonstrating the ability of endodentate 9S3 to stabilize octahedral or pseudooctahedral geometries.

The synthesis and properties of dinuclear complexes of platinum is described. Dinuclear complexes of platinum indicate anticancer activity in biological networks. Usually, these complexes has two platinum centers that are bridged by a single diamine ligand. The present complex is double-bonded via two bridging ligands. The results of the experiment are in concordance with the theoretical measurements of the platinum complex.

Research describes three DNA metallointercalators containing a carborane entity. DNA-binding studies suggest that the platinum(II) complexes of the metallointercalators is involved in the intercalative interaction. The preparation of the intercalators involves the treatment of the platinum(II) complex with the 1,2-carborane monothiol derivatives or the 1,7-carbonae ligand.

Research describes a series of sigma-phenylplatinum(II) complexes possessing a carboxylic acid functionality incorporated by using pyridine monocarboxylic acid ligands. Data indicate that these compounds do not efficiently function as tectons because of the presence of only one carboxylic acid moiety.

Carboranes are an important class of electron-delocalized icosahedral carbon-boron clusters with unique physical and chemical properties, which can offer various functions to polymers including enhanced heat-resistance, tuned electronic properties and hydrophobicity, special ability of dihydrogen bond formation, and thermal neutron capture. Carborane-containing polymers have been synthesized mainly by means of step-growth polymerizations of disubstituted carborane monomers, with chain-growth polymerizations of monosubstituted carborane monomers including ATRP, RAFT, and ROMP only utilized recently. Carborane-containing polymers may find application as harsh-environment resistant materials, ceramic precursors, fluorescent materials with tuned emissive properties, novel optoelectronic devices, potential BNCT agents, and drug carriers with low cytotoxicity. We show that changing the number and position of nitrogen atoms in the heteroatomic core of a pyrazolopyrimidine acetamide is sufficient to induce complex binding to wild type human TSPO. Only compounds with this complex binding profile lacked intrinsic effect on glioblastoma proliferation but positively modulated the antiproliferative effects of a synthetic TSPO ligand. To the best of our knowledge this is the first demonstration of allosteric-like interaction at the wild type human TSPO.

Relative to other polycyclic frameworks (1-3), a carborane cage (4 and Cs·5) exerts a significant biological effect as an inhibitor of the purinergic P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) which allows one to target depression in vivo and thus demonstrate, for the first time, that a carborane has the capacity to modify CNS activity.
