The continuous upsurge in water pollution caused by harmful organic and inorganic contaminants has led to a shortage of nontoxic, clean water and effective waste management. Therefore, it is crucial to establish an eco-friendly approach using sustainable, biodegradable, and recyclable materials to treat the wastewater. In this regard, photocatalysts are highly effective for mitigating water pollution to a certain degree through an energy-efficient and greener approach. Among various photocatalysts, polymeric nanocomposites have attracted considerable consideration owing to their several advantageous characteristics like higher surface area, extended surface to volume ratio, advanced adsorption efficiency, and application for the degradation of harmful contaminants. In this comprehensive review, we have focused on the recent synthetic approaches for development of polymeric nanocomposites. Also, the application of these polymeric nanocomposites for the degradation of harmful contaminants has also been extensively summarized. In this article, we have investigated the modulation of excited-state intramolecular double proton transfer (ESIDPT) dynamics of 2,2'-bipyridine-3,3'-diol (BP(OH)2) in two crown ethers (CEs), namely, 18-Crown-6 (18C6) and 15-Crown-5 (15C5). From steady-state UV-visible measurements, we have shown that there is no significant interaction between the dienol tautomeric form of BP(OH)2 and two CEs. However, in the presence of CEs, an additional emission band (~415 nm) is generated along with the diketo tautomer band (~465 nm). In time-resolved analysis, we have observed the generation of ~260 ps rise component in the presence of 18C6. Therefore, by combining the results of steady-state and time-resolved emissions, we have proposed that the water-assisted ESIDPT route of BP(OH)2 generates a hydronium ion (H3O+) in the excited state. 18C6 binds nicely to this H3O+ ion. As a result, retarded ESIDPT dynamics is observed in 18C6. However, as 15C5 cannot bind H3O+ properly, no rise component is found. With the addition of potassium chloride (KCl), the contribution of the rise component decreases due to unavailability of free 18C6 cavity to capture the H3O+ ion generated in the excited state. Addition of calcium chloride (CaCl2) leads to complete removal of the rise component due to the inhibition of the water-assisted ESIDPT route. From wavelength-dependent behavior, we have observed that the rise component is present only at 465 nm in 18C6. We have also shown that the fibrillar morphology of glycine can be successfully probed through fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy using BP(OH)2 as an imaging agent. This article demonstrates the interaction of a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) nucleotide, adenosine-5′-monophosphate disodium (AMP) with a cationic surface active ionic liquid (SAIL) 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazoium chloride (C12mimCl), and an anionic SAIL, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium n-octylsulfate ([C4mim][C8SO4]). Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements and ¹H NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) studies indicate that substantial interaction is taking place among the DNA nucleotide (AMP) and the SAILs. Moreover, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) suggests that SAILs containing micellar assemblies are transformed into larger micellar assemblies in the presence of DNA nucleotides. Additionally, the rotational motion of two oppositely charged molecules, rhodamine 6G perchlorate (R6G) and fluorescein sodium salt (Fl-Na), have been monitored in these aggregates. The rotational motion of R6G and Fl-Na differs significantly between SAILs micelles and SAILs-AMP containing larger micellar aggregates. The effect of negatively charged DNA nucleotide (AMP) addition into the cationic and anionic SAILs is more prominent for the cationic charged molecule R6G than that of anionic probe Fl-Na due to the favorable electrostatic interaction between the AMP and cationic R6G. Moreover, the influence of the anionic DNA nucleotide on the cationic and anionic SAIL micelles is monitored through the variation of the lateral diffusion motion of oppositely charged probe molecules (R6G and Fl-Na) inside these aggregates. This variation in diffusion coefficient values also suggests that the interaction pattern of these oppositely charged probes are different within the SAILs-nucleotide containing aggregates. Therefore, both rotational and translational diffusion measurements confirm that the DNA nucleotide (AMP) renders more rigid microenvironment within the micellar solution of SAILs. This article describes the formation of stable unilamellar vesicles involving surface active ionic liquid (SAIL), 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C16mimCl), and 5-methyl salicylic acid (5mS). Turbidity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and viscosity measurements suggest that C16mimCl containing micellar aggregates are transformed to elongated micelle and finally into vesicular aggregates with the addition of 5mS. Besides, we have also investigated the photophysical aspects of a hydrophobic (coumarin 153, C153) and a hydrophilic molecule (rhodamine 6G (R6G) perchlorate) during 5mS-induced micelle to vesicle transition. The rotational motion of C153 becomes slower, whereas faster motion is observed for R6G during micelle to vesicle transition. Moreover, the fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) measurements suggest that the translational diffusion of hydrophobic probe becomes slower in C16mimCl-5mS aggregates in comparison to C16mimCl micelle. However, a reverse trend in translational diffusion motion of hydrophilic molecule has been observed in C16mimCl-5mS aggregates. Moreover, we have also found that the C16mimCl-5mS containing vesicles are transformed into micelles upon enhanced temperature, and it is further confirmed by turbidity, DLS measurements that this transition is a reversible one. Finally, temperature-induced rotational motion of C153 and R6G has been monitored in C16mimCl-5mS aggregates to get a complete scenario regarding the temperature-induced vesicle to micelle transition. In this Article, we have investigated the translational and rotational diffusion of two structurally similar but differently charged solutes (rhodamine 6G perchlorate and fluorescein sodium salt) in ethylammonium nitrate (EAN)-methanol (CH3OH) mixture to understand the effect of added ionic liquid on the motion of the solutes. EAN and CH3OH both are amphiphilic molecules and characterized by an extended hydrogen bonding network. Recently, Russina et al. found that a wide distribution of clusters exist in the CH3OH rich region (0.10 ≤ χEAN ≤ 0.15) and EAN molecules preserve their bulk-sponge-like morphology (Russina, O.; Sferrazza, A.; Caminiti, R.; Triolo, A. J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2014, 5, 1738-1742). The effect of this microheterogeneous mixture on the solute's motion shows some interesting results compared to other PIL (protic ionic liquid)-cosolvent mixtures. Analysis of the time-resolved anisotropy data with the aid of Stokes-Einstein-Debye (SED) hydrodynamic theory predicts that the reorientation time of both of the solutes appears close to the stick hydrodynamic line in the methanol rich region. The hydrogen bond accepting solutes experience specific interaction with CH3OH, and with increasing concentration of EAN, the specific interaction between the solute and solvent molecules is decreased while the decrease is more prominent in the low mole fraction of EAN due to the large size of cluster formation. The temperature dependent anisotropy measurements show that the hydrogen bonding interaction between EAN and CH3OH is increased with increasing temperature. Moreover, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) shows the dynamic heterogeneity of the mixture which is due to the segregation of the alkyl chain of the PIL. Formation of a large cluster at a low mole fraction of IL (0.10 ≤ χEAN ≤ 0.15) can be proved by the insensitivity of the translational diffusion and rotational activation energy of the solutes to the concentration of EAN. Thus, the result of the work suggests that the addition of EAN to the CH3OH affects the specific interaction between solute and solvent and, as a consequence, the translational motion as well as the rotational motion of the solutes are modulated. It is well-known that sugars protect membrane structures against fusion and leakage. Here, we have investigated the interaction between different sugars (sucrose, trehalose, and maltose) and phospholipid membrane of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phoshpocholine (DMPC) using dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and other various spectroscopic techniques. DLS measurement reveals that the addition of sugar molecule results a significant increase of the average diameter of DMPC membrane. We have also noticed that in the presence of different sugars the rotational relaxation and solvation time of coumarin 480 (C480) and coumarin 153 (C153) surrounding DMPC membrane increases, suggesting a marked reduction of the hydration behavior at the surface of phospholipid membrane. In addition, we have also investigated the effect of sugar molecules on the lateral mobility of phospholipids. Interestingly, the relative increase in rotational, solvation and lateral diffusion is more prominent for C480 than that of C153 because of their different location in lipid bilayer. It is because of preferential location of comparatively hydrophilic probe C480 in the interfacial region of the lipid bilayer. Sugars intercalate with the phospholipid headgroup through hydrogen bonding and replace smaller sized water molecules from the membrane surface. Therefore, overall, we have monitored a comparative analysis regarding the interaction of different sugar molecules (sucrose, trehalose, and maltose) with the DMPC membrane through DLS, TEM, solvation dynamics, time-resolved anisotropy, and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) measurements to explore the structural and spectroscopic aspect of lipid-sugar interaction. In this Article, we demonstrate a detailed characterization of binding interaction of berberine chloride (BBCl) with calf-thymus DNA (CT-DNA) in buffer solution as well as in two differently charged reverse micelles (RMs). The photophyscial properties of this alkaloid have been modulated within these microheterogeneous bioassemblies. The mode of binding of this alkaloid with DNA is of debate to date. However, fluorescence spectroscopic measurements, circular dichroism (CD) measurement, and temperature-dependent study unambiguously establish that BBCl partially intercalates into the DNA base pairs. The nonplanarity imposed by partial saturation in their structure causes the nonclassical types of intercalation into DNA. Besides the intercalation, electrostatic interactions also play a significant role in the binding between BBCl and DNA. DNA structure turns into a condensed form after encapsulation into RMs, which is followed by the CD spectra and microscopy study. The probe location and dynamics in the nanopool of the RMs depended on the electrostatic interaction between the charged surfactants and cationic berberine. The structural alteration of CT-DNA from B form to condensed form and the interplay of surface charge between RMs and DNA determine the interaction between the alkaloid and DNA in RMs. Time-resolved study and fluorescence anisotropy measurements successfully provide the binding interaction of BBCl in the nanopool of the RMs in the absence and in the presence of DNA. The formation of pluronic triblock copolymer (F127)-cholesterol-based niosome and its interaction with sugar (sucrose) molecules have been investigated. The morphology of F127-cholesterol -based niosome in the presence of sucrose has been successfully demonstrated using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) techniques. The DLS profiles and TEM images clearly suggest that the size of the niosome aggregates increases significantly in the presence of sucrose. In addition to structural characterization, a detailed comparative fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) study has been carried out in these F127-containing aggregates, involving coumarin 153 (C153) as donor (D) and rhodamine 6G (R6G) as an acceptor (A) to monitor the dynamic heterogeneity of the systems. Besides, time-resolved anisotropy and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy measurements have been carried out to monitor the rotational and lateral diffusion motion in these F127-cholesterol-based aggregates using C153 and R6G, respectively. During the course of FRET study, we have observed multiple time constants of FRET inside the F127-cholesterol-based niosomes in contrast with the F127 micelle. This corresponds to the presence of more than one preferential donor-acceptor (D-A) distance in niosomes than in F127 micelle. FRET has also been successfully used to probe the effect of sucrose on the morphology of F127-cholesterol-based niosome. In the presence of sucrose, the time constant of FRET further increases as the D-A distances increase in sucrose-decorated niosome. Finally, the excitation-wavelength-dependent FRET studies have indicated that as the excitation of donor molecules varies from 408 to 440 nm the contribution of the faster rise component of the acceptor enhances considerably, which clearly establishes the dynamics heterogeneity of both systems. The rotational dynamics and translationaldiffusion of a hydrophilicorganic molecule, rhodamine 6G perchlorate (R6G ClO4) insmall unilamellar vesicles formed by two different ionic surfactants,cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS),with cholesterol have been investigated using fluorescence spectroscopicmethods. Moreover, in this article the formation of vesicle usinganionic surfactant, SDS at different cholesterol-to-surfactant molarratio (expressed by Qvalue (Q=[cholesterol]/[surfactant])) has also been reported. Visual observation,dynamic light scattering (DLS) study, turbidity measurement, steadystate fluorescence anisotropy (r0) measurement,and eventually microscopic images reveal the formation of small unilamellarvesicles in aqueous solution. Also, in this study, an attempt hasbeen made to observe whether the cationic probe molecule, rhodamine6G (R6G) experiences similar or different microenvironment in cholesterol-SDSand cholesterol-CTAB assemblies with increase in cholesterol concentration.The influence of cholesterol on rotational and translational diffusionof R6G molecules has been investigated by monitoring UV–visabsorption, fluorescence, time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy, andfinally fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) measurements.In cholesterol–SDS assemblies, due to the strong electrostaticattractive interaction between the negatively charged surface of vesicleand cationic R6G molecules, the rotational and diffusion motion ofR6G becomes slower. However, in cholesterol–CTAB aggregates,the enhanced hydrophobicity and electrostatic repulsion induces themigration of R6G from vesicle bilayer to aqueous phase. The experimentalobservations suggest that the surface charge of vesicles has a strongerinfluence than the hydrophobicity of the vesicle bilayer on the rotationaland diffusion motion of R6G molecules. A unique facile process has been adopted for fast assembly of a poly( N -vinyl imidazole) cross-linked β-cyclodextrin hydrogel through microwave-assisted free radical polymerization, using N , N '-methylenebis(acrylamide) cross-linker. The copolymer possesses positive surface charge, one of the characteristic properties of an ideal hemostatic hydrogel. The functionalized imidazole-based hydrogel demonstrates rapid, superior blood coagulation kinetics under in vitro and in vivo conditions. On application to a major renal arterial hemorrhagic model, this hydrogel shows better blood clotting kinetics, leading to complete hemostasis in as few as ∼144 ± 7 s. Additionally, 350 μL of whole blood was clotted instantly, in ∼35 s, and therefore, reinforcing its hemostatic potential. The hydrogel demonstrates excellent biocompatibility, when seeded with human dermal fibroblast cells, retaining the native property of its predecessor. In addition, the hydrogel presents excellent hemocompatibility when tested with whole blood with the highest hemolytic ratio of 1.07 ± 0.05%. Moreover, it also demonstrates potential as a carrier for sustained release of an anesthetic drug, lidocaine hydrochloride monohydrate (∼83% in 24 h). The rapid hemostatic behavior of the hydrogel is coupled with its cytocompatibility and hemocompatibilty properties along with controlled drug release characteristics. These behaviors evidently demonstrate it to be an excellent alternative for a superior hemostatic material for severe hemorrhagic conditions.

We have introduced new niosome formulations using sucrose monolaurate, vitamin E and n -octanol as independent additives. Detailed characterization techniques including turbidity, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, ξ potential, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance measurements have been introduced to monitor the morphological transition of the carbohydrate-based micellar assembly into niosomal aggregates. Moreover, microheterogeneity of these niosomal aggregates has been investigated through different fluorescence spectroscopic techniques using a hydrophobic probe molecule coumarin 153 (C153). Further, it has been observed that vitamin E and octanol have an opposing effect on the rotational motion of C153 in the respective niosome assemblies. The time-resolved anisotropy studies suggest that incorporation of vitamin E and octanol into the surfactant aggregates results in slower and faster rotational motion of C153, respectively, compared to the micellar assemblies. Moreover, the ability to entrap a probe molecule by these niosomes is utilized to encapsulate and deliver the anticancer drug doxorubicin inside the mammalian cells which is monitored through fluorescence microscopic images. The interaction of graphene oxide (GO) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) in aqueous buffer solution has been investigated with various spectroscopic and imaging techniques. At single molecular resolution this interaction has been performed using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) techniques. The conformational dynamics of BSA on GO's influence have been explored by FCS and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. For the FCS studies BSA was labeled covalently by a fluorophore, Alexa Fluor 488. On the addition of GO in phosphate buffer of 10 mM at pH 7.4 the diffusion time (τD) and the hydrodynamic radius (Rh) of BSA increase due to adsorption of BSA. Conformational relaxation time components of native BSA drastically vary with the addition of GO, signifying the change of conformational dynamics of BSA after addition of GO. The adsorption isotherm also indicates significant adsorption of BSA on the GO surface. Adsorption of BSA on the GO surface has shown in direct images of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and FLIM. Fluorescence quenching study of BSA with addition of GO also indicates that there is strong interaction between BSA and GO.

In this article, we have investigated the anomalous behavior of two alcohol-water (tert-butyl alcohol (TBA)-water and ethanol-water) binary mixtures using femtosecond fluorescence upconversion technique. Recently, Gupta and Patey (Gupta, R.; Patey, G. N. J. Chem. Phys. 2012, 137, 034509(1)-034509(12)) have used four force fields to simulate TBA-water binary mixtures. Surprisingly, two of them do not identify any aggregation of TBA molecules. We have calculated average solvation time of Coumarin 480 (C480) using two different methods. Our results indicate slowdown in solvation time in the mole fraction ranges XT = 0.09-0.15, XT = 0.40-0.46 and XE = 0.06-0.08, XE = 0.20-0.25 for TBA-water and ethanol-water binary mixtures, respectively. Additionally, we have detected another anomalous region at XT ∼ 0.03. Slow solvation responses in the ranges XT = 0.40-0.46 and XE = 0.20-0.25 are probably due to the higher shear viscosity of the medium. However, XT = 0.09-0.15 and XE = 0.06-0.08 are the manifestation of aggregation induced structural transition of alcohol molecules. Hindered rotation of C480 in the ranges XT = 0.04-0.09 and XE = 0.03-0.07 corroborates our solvation dynamics results. From temperature dependent anisotropy measurements, we have shown that aggregation of alcohol molecules increases with increase in temperature.

The stable unilamellar vesicles formation, having large potential applications in biological as well as biomedical fields, has been investigated in aqueous solution composed of a zwitterionic surfactant, N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethylammonio-1-propanesulfonate (SB-16), and water-soluble cationic poly(amino acid), poly-L-lysine (PLL). Dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and other optical spectroscopic techniques revealed the transformation of SB-16 micelles in aqueous solutions into stable unilamellar vesicles above a certain concentration (0.008 to 0.1% w/v) of PLL. Solvation and rotational dynamics of coumarin 480 (C-480) give the information on hydration behavior around the headgroup regions of SB-16 micelle and SB-16/PLL vesicle. It was observed that the hydration nature around the headgroup regions of SB-16/PLL vesicular system is higher than the head group regions of micellar system. Thus, PLL permits more water molecules in the headgroup regions of vesicular system.

In this work, we have focused on the supramolecular interactions of a water-soluble host Cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) with an excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) probe 1'-hydroxy-2'-acetonaphthone (HAN) through steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. In water HAN is almost nonfluorescent in nature with a very low fluorescence quantum yield (Φ = 0.009). With gradual addition of CB[7] absorption maximum of HAN is red-shifted (292 cm(-1)) and hence confirming the formation of an inclusion complex in the ground state between HAN and CB[7]. Due to this complexation CB[7] offers a hydrophobic microenvironment to the HAN which is completely different from that of homogeneous water. Upon encapsulation into the nanocavity of CB[7], HAN exhibits a 20-fold increase in fluorescence intensity along with a 36 nm (1618 cm(-1)) hypsochromic shift in emission maxima. This hypsochromic shift is an indication about the modulation of excited state photophysical behavior of HAN due to the formation of HAN-CB[7] inclusion complex. Moreover, huge partition coefficient of HAN from water to CB[7] along with a∼ 12-fold increase in fluorescence lifetime confirm the favorable interaction between HAN and CB[7]. We have also observed the stimuli-sensitive (temperature and cationic stimuli) breathing of CB[7] cavity i.e., in the presence of different additives the portals of CB[7] open up to release HAN in water and take up the additives. Time-resolved anisotropy measurements further indicate about the probable location of HAN inside the CB[7]. The observation of a 1.7 ns component in the presence of CB[7] signifies the highly restricted rotational motion of HAN inside the cavity of CB[7] corroborates our finding.

In this article we have investigated intermolecular excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) of firefly's chromophore D-luciferin in DMSO-water binary mixtures using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The unusual behavior of DMSO-water binary mixture as reported by Bagchi et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B 2010, 114, 12875-12882) was also found using D-luciferin as intermolecular ESPT probe. The binary mixture has given evidence of its anomalous nature at low mole fractions of DMSO (below XD = 0.4) in our systematic investigation. Upon excitation of neutral D-luciferin molecule, dual fluorescence emissions (protonated and deprotonated form) are observed in DMSO-water binary mixture. A clear isoemissive point in the time-resolved area normalized emission spectra further indicates two emissive species in the excited state of D-luciferin in DMSO-water binary mixture. DMSO-water binary mixtures of different compositions are fascinating hydrogen bonding systems. Therefore, we have observed unusual changes in the fluorescence emission intensity, fluorescence quantum yield, and fluorescence lifetime of more hydrogen bonding sensitive anionic form of D-luciferin in low DMSO content of DMSO-water binary mixture.

This article presents the interaction of curcumin in the microenvironments provided by aggregation of pluronic triblock copolymer P123 into micellar and vesicular assemblies. The formation of vesicles using triblock copolymer P123 and 5-methylsalicylic acid (5 mS) has been successfully characterized by optical spectroscopy, light scattering measurement, and eventually microscopic techniques. Besides, to make a comparative study between the polymeric micelles, we have also investigated the photophysical changes of curcumin in F127 triblock copolymer micelles having variation in poly(ethylene oxide) (PPO) and poly(propylene oxide) (PEO) unit of polymer chain to that of P123. Time-dependent UV-vis measurement suggests that these polymer micelles are able to stabilize poorly water-soluble curcumin by suppressing the degradation rate in micellar nanocavity. However, experimental observations suggest that P123 micelles are more efficient than F127 to perturb excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-related nonradiative decay of curcumin. We also observed that rigid and confined microenvironment of P123/5 mS vesicles enhances emission intensity and lifetime of curcumin more compared to P123 micelles. All the observations suggest that modulation of photophysics of curcumin is responsible due to its interaction with poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(propylene oxide) unit of triblock copolymer.

The binding and rotational properties of an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorophore, 2,2'-bipyridine-3,3'-diol, BP(OH)2 has been investigated in alkyltrimethylammonium bromide containing (CnTAB, n = 12, 14, and 16) micelles and alkyltrimethylammonium bromide/cholesterol (CnTAB (n = 14 and 16)/cholesterol) forming vesicles using fluorescence-based spectroscopy techniques. The formation of thermodynamically stable unilamellar self-assemblies of alkyltrimethylammonium bromide/cholesterol are characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. Individually, aqueous solutions of all these alkyltrimethylammonium bromide form micelles after certain surfactant concentration (critical micelle concentration, cmc) of surfactant, whereas cholesterol molecules are insoluble in water. But with the variation of the cholesterol-to-surfactant molar ratio (Q = [cholesterol]/[surfactant]), uniform distribution of vesicular aggregates in aqueous solution can be obtained. The micelle-to-vesicle transition of surfactant solution upon addition of cholesterol also influences the steady state emission profile, fluorescence lifetime, and rotational dynamics of BP(OH)2 molecule. The diketo tautomer of BP(OH)2 molecule gets stabilized as the concentration of surfactant increases in aqueous solution. Fluorescence lifetime and rotational time constant of the BP(OH)2 molecule are also influenced by the variation of alkyl chain length of surfactant molecule. The emission quantum yield (Φ) is also found to be sensitive with surfactant concentration, variation in chain length of surfactants, and it saturates after the cmc of surfactants. The rigid and restricted microenvironment of vesicle bilayer enhance the lifetime and also rotational relaxation of BP(OH)2 significantly. The rotational behavior of BP(OH)2 in surfactant/cholesterol self-assemblies is also explained by using analytical parameters related to time-resolved anisotropy following two-step process and wobbling in a cone models.
