Organic materials can tune the optical properties in layered (2D) hybrid perovskites, although their impact on photophysics is often overlooked. Here, we use transient absorption spectroscopy to probe the Dion-Jacobson (DJ) and Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) 2D perovskite phases. We show the formation of charge transfer excitons in DJ phases, resulting in a photoinduced Stark effect which is shown to be dependent on the spacer size. By using electroabsorption spectroscopy, we quantify the strength of the photoinduced electric field, while temperature-dependent measurements demonstrate new features in the transient spectra of RP phases at low temperatures resulting from the quantum-confined Stark effect. This study reveals the impact of spacer size and perovskite phase configuration on charge transfer excitons in 2D perovskites of interest to their advanced material design.

Beyond the common supramolecular helical polymers in solutions, controlling single-crystal helical self-assembly with precisely defined chirality and architectures has been challenging. Here, we report that simply merging static homochiral amino acids with dynamic chiral disulfides can produce a class of building blocks featuring supramolecular helical single-crystal self-assembly with unusual stereodivergency. Analysis of 20 single-crystal structures of 1,2-dithiolanes gives an atom-precision understanding of the chirality transfer from the molecular to supramolecular level, featuring homochiral and heterochiral helical supramolecular self-assembly in the solid state. The underlying structure-assembly relationship reveals that the synergistic interplay of intermolecular H-bonds and the 1,2-dithiolane ring with adaptive chirality plays a key role in determining the assembly pathway, also involving the effects of residue groups, substituents, molecular stacking, and solvents. The confinement effect in the solid state can stabilize the dynamic stereochemistry of disulfide bonds and selectively result in specific conformers that can minimize the energy of global supramolecular systems. We envision that these results represent a starting point to use dynamic chiral disulfide as a functional entity in supramolecular chemistry and may inspire a new class of supramolecular helical polymers with dynamic functions.

Molecular machines offer many opportunities for the development of responsive materials and introduce autonomous motion in molecular systems. While basic molecular switches and motors carry out one type of motion upon being exposed to an external stimulus, the development of molecular systems capable of performing coupled motions is essential for the development of more advanced molecular machinery. Overcrowded alkene-based rotary molecular motors are an ideal basis for the design of such systems as they undergo a controlled rotation initiated by light allowing for excellent spatio-temporal precision. Here, we present an example of a Pd complex of a second-generation rotary motor whose Pd center undergoes a coupled oscillatory motion relative to the motor core upon rotation of the motor. We have studied this phenomenon by UV-vis, NMR, and density functional theory calculations to support our conclusions. With this demonstration of a coupled rotation-oscillation motion powered by a light-driven molecular motor, we provide a solid basis for the development of more advanced molecular machines integrating different types of motion in their operation.

Surface and bulk molecular modulators are the key to improving the efficiency and stability of hybrid perovskite solar cells. However, due to their low concentration, heterogeneous environments, and low sample mass, it remains challenging to characterize their structure and dynamics at the atomic level, as required to establish structure-activity relationships. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has revealed a wealth of information on the atomic-level structure of hybrid perovskites, but the inherent insensitivity of NMR severely limits its utility to characterize thin-film samples. Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) can enhance NMR sensitivity by orders of magnitude, but DNP methods for perovskite materials have so far been limited. Here, we determined the factors that limit the efficiency of DNP NMR for perovskite samples by systematically studying layered hybrid perovskite analogues. We find that the fast-relaxing dynamic cation is the major impediment to higher DNP efficiency, while microwave absorption and particle morphology play a secondary role. We then show that the former can be mitigated by deuteration, enabling 1 H DNP enhancement factors of up to 100, which can be harnessed to enhance signals from dopants or additives present in very low concentrations. Specifically, using this new DNP methodology at a high magnetic field and with small sample volumes, we have recorded the NMR spectrum of the 20 nm (6 μg) passivating layer on a single perovskite thin film, revealing a two-dimensional (2D) layered perovskite structure at the surface that resembles the n = 1 homologue but which has greater disorder than in bulk layered perovskites.

Controlling supramolecular polymerization by external stimuli holds great potential toward the development of responsive soft materials and manipulating self-assembly at the nanoscale. Photochemical switching offers the prospect of regulating the structure and properties of systems in a noninvasive and reversible manner with spatial and temporal control. In addition, this approach will enhance our understanding of supramolecular polymerization mechanisms; however, the control of molecular assembly by light remains challenging. Here we present photoresponsive stiff-stilbene-based bis-urea monomers whose trans isomers readily form supramolecular polymers in a wide range of organic solvents, enabling fast light-triggered depolymerization-polymerization and reversible gel formation. Due to the stability of the cis isomers and the high photostationary states (PSS) of the cis - trans isomerization, precise control over supramolecular polymerization and in situ gelation could be achieved with short response times. A detailed study on the temperature-dependent and photoinduced supramolecular polymerization in organic solvents revealed a kinetically controlled nucleation-elongation mechanism. By application of a Volta phase plate to enhance the phase-contrast method in cryo-EM, unprecedented for nonaqueous solutions, uniform nanofibers were observed in organic solvents.

Unidirectional molecular rotation based on alternating photochemical and thermal isomerizations of overcrowded alkenes is well established, but rotary cycles based purely on photochemical isomerizations are rare. Herein we report three new second-generation molecular motors featuring a phosphorus center in the lower half, which engenders a unique element of axial chirality. These motors exhibit unusual behavior, in that all four diastereomeric states can interconvert solely photochemically. Kinetic analysis and modeling reveal that the behavior of the new motors is consistent with all-photochemical unidirectional rotation. Furthermore, X-ray crystal structures of all four diastereomeric states of two of these new motors were obtained, which constitute the first achievements of crystallographic characterization of the full 360° rotational cycle of overcrowded-alkene-based molecular motors. Finally, the axial phosphorus stereoelement in the phosphine motor can be thermally inverted, and this epimerization enables a "shortcut" of the traditional rotational cycle of these compounds.

The synthesis and characterization of a series of light-driven third-generation molecular motors featuring various structural modifications at the central aromatic core are presented. We explore a number of substitution patterns, such as 1,2-dimethoxybenzene, naphthyl, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, 1,1':2',1″-terphenyl, 4,4″-dimethoxy-1,1':2',1″-terphenyl, and 1,2-dicarbomethoxybenzene, considered essential for designing future responsive systems. In many cases, the synthetic routes for both synthetic intermediates and motors reported here are modular, allowing for their post-functionalization. The structural modifications introduced in the core of the motors result in improved solubility and a bathochromic shift of the absorption maxima. These features, in combination with a structural design that presents remote functionalization of the stator with respect to the fluorene rotors, make these novel motors particularly promising as light-responsive actuators in covalent and supramolecular materials.

The visible-light-driven rotation of an overcrowded alkene-based molecular motor strut in a dual-function metal-organic framework (MOF) is reported. Two types of functional linkers, a palladium-porphyrin photosensitizer and a bispyridine-derived molecular motor, were used to construct the framework capable of harvesting low-energy green light to power the rotary motion. The molecular motor was introduced in the framework using the postsynthetic solvent-assisted linker exchange (SALE) method, and the structure of the material was confirmed by powder (PXRD) and single-crystal X-ray (SC-XRD) diffraction. The large decrease in the phosphorescence lifetime and intensity of the porphyrin in the MOFs upon introduction of the molecular motor pillars confirms efficient triplet-to-triplet energy transfer between the porphyrin linkers and the molecular motor. Near-infrared Raman spectroscopy revealed that the visible light-driven rotation of the molecular motor proceeds in the solid state at rates similar to those observed in solution.

A novel protocol for the regio- and stereoselective iodofluorination of internal and terminal alkynes using 1,3-diiodo-5,5,-dimethylhydantoin and HF-based reagents is disclosed. This approach is used to prepare a fluorinated tamoxifen derivative in two steps from commercially available starting materials. A facile method enabling controlled regioselective double iodofluorination of terminal alkynes is also presented.

In this work, we describe the 18 F-labeling of α,α-difluoro-α-(aryloxy)acetic acid derivatives and demonstrate that these building blocks are amenable to post- 18 F-fluorination functionalization. Protodecarboxylation offers a new entry to 18 F-difluoromethoxyarene, and the value of this approach is further demonstrated with coupling processes leading to representative 18 F-labeled TRPV1 inhibitors and TRPV1 antagonists.

Hydrogen bonding with fluoride is a key interaction encountered when analyzing the mode of action of 5'-fluoro-5'-deoxyadenosine synthase, the only known enzyme capable of catalyzing the formation of a C-F bond from F - . Further understanding of the effect of hydrogen bonding on the structure and reactivity of complexed fluoride is therefore important for catalysis and numerous other applications, such as anion supramolecular chemistry. Herein we disclose a detailed study examining the structure of 18 novel urea-fluoride complexes in the solid state, by X-ray and neutron diffraction, and in solution phase and explore the reactivity of these complexes as a fluoride source in S N 2 chemistry. Experimental data show that the structure, coordination strength, and reactivity of the urea-fluoride complexes are tunable by modifying substituents on the urea receptor. Hammett analysis of aryl groups on the urea indicates that fluoride binding is dependent on σ p and σ m parameters with stronger binding being observed for electron-deficient urea ligands. For the first time, defined urea-fluoride complexes are used as fluoride-binding reagents for the nucleophilic substitution of a model alkyl bromide. The reaction is slower in comparison with known alcohol-fluoride complexes, but S N 2 is largely favored over E2, at a ratio surpassing all hydrogen-bonded complexes documented in the literature for the model alkyl bromide employed. Increased second-order rate constants at higher dilution support the hypothesis that the reactive species is a 1:1 urea-fluoride complex of type [UF] - (U = urea) resulting from partial dissociation of the parent compound [U 2 F] - . The dissociation processes can be quantified through a combination of UV and NMR assays, including DOSY and HOESY analyses that illuminate the complexation state and H-bonding in solution.

The synthesis of arylCF2CF2SiMe3 and their reactivity in cross-coupling reactions with aryl iodides and aryl bromides to afford a range of 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-1,2-arylethanes is reported. The use of pyridine as an alternative to phenanthroline, and the ability to carry out the reaction at 60 °C or room temperature are the key features of this Cu-Ag mediated cross-coupling methodology. The chemistry is compatible with (hetero)aryl halides, offering a platform to develop products of interest in material and medicinal chemistry.

[formula: see text] The final stages of a total synthesis of mycalamide A are described. A key step is the aldol reaction (mismatched) of imide 4 and aldehyde 5 which provided a ca. 5:4 mixture of aldols 10a and 10b, with incorrect C(7) stereochemistry. Elaboration of the 10a-10b mixture to mycalamide A required epimerization of C(7) at the stage of beta-keto imide 11. Alternatively, Swern oxidation of the 10a-10b mixture under conditions that minimize C(7) epimerization led to 7-epi-mycalamide A selectively.
