A novel kind of photoinitiator based on the macrocyclic molecule pillar[6]arene (P6OC2H5) is reported. Under light irradiation, P6OC2H5 was cleaved to a linear oligomer biradical, which could efficiently initiate free-radical photopolymerization. Owing to the absence of small molecular fragment generation, the macrocyclic photoinitiator exhibited a much lower migration rate and cytotoxicity than commercial photoinitiators. This is the first time that a macrocyclic molecule has been developed as a photoinitiator based on the macrocycle fracture mechanism.

The development of the oil industry brings the critical problem of ocean pollution by oil spill or fossil fuels. The use of materials for water/oil separation is one of the effective approaches to solve this crisis. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been used  to prepare water/oil separation materials. Currently, glutaraldehyde has been employed as the cross-linking agent, which is well known to be toxic and environmentally unfriendly. Moreover, it is difficult to deal with the disposal of the Across-linked material. Here, we propose a strategy of fabricating macroporous material which was prepared by PVA and sodium silicate (Na 2 SiO 3 ) in aqueous solution. Following through with the one-step method of sol-gel reaction of hydroxyl groups with trimethoxy(octadecyl)silane, the low surface energy substance was grafted on the macroporous material and a super-hydrophobic macroporous membrane for water/oil separation was prepared. As oil sorbent, the as-prepared dried super-hydrophobic PVA/Na 2 SiO 3 porous materials (PSD6S) have the adsorption capacity of 1.8-7.0 g/g for oil uptake, which depends on the type of oil liquid. Typically, the separation efficiency of this material could reach more than 99% even after 10 times of use without the help of ambient pressure. It is noteworthy that the as-prepared samples could be easily decomposable and dissolvable completely in acidic medium at a rapid rate.

On the basis of the use of photopolymerization technology, a facile and reliable method for in situ preparation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) within PNIPAAm functional surfaces is presented as a means to achieve nonfouling, antibacterial films. The surface properties were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The antibacterial and release properties of the surfaces were tested against E. coli: at 37 °C (above the LCST of PNIPAAm), the functional films facilitated the attachment of bacteria, which were then killed by the AgNPs. Changing temperature to 4 °C (below the LCST), swollen PNIPAAm chains led the release of dead bacteria. The results showed that AgNPs/PNIPAAm hybrid surfaces offer a "smart" antibacterial capability in response to the change of environmental temperature.

Copper-doped semiconductors are designed to photoassist the alkyne-azide cycloaddition catalysis by Cu(I). Upon irradiation, injection of electrons from the semiconductor into copper oxide nanostructures produces the catalytic Cu(I) species. The new catalysts are air- and moisture-tolerant and can be readily recovered after use and reused several times.

We develop a facile method for preparing copper nanoparticles and patterned surfaces with copper stripes by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of a mixture solution containing a photoinitiator and a copper-amine coordination compound. The copper-amine compound is formed by adding diethanol amine to an ethanol solution of copper chloride. Under UV irradiation, free radicals are generated by photoinitiator decomposition. Meanwhile, the copper-amine coordination compound is rapidly reduced to copper particles because the formation of the copper-amine coordination compound prevents the production of insoluble cuprous chloride. Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) is used as a capping agent to prevent the aggregation of the as-prepared copper nanoparticles. The capping agent increases the dispersion of copper nanoparticles in the ethanol solution and affects their size and morphology. Increasing the concentration of the copper-amine coordination compound to 0.1 M directly forms a patterned surface with copper stripes on the transparent substrate. This patterned surface is formed through the combination of the heterogeneous nucleation of copper nanoparticles and photolithography. We also investigate the mechanism of photoreduction by UV-vis spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

In this letter, we have developed a facile method to enhance the stability of polyelectrolyte multilayers. We fabricate conventional polyelectrolyte multilayers of PAH/PAA through electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly and then postinfiltrate photosensitive cross-linking agent 4,4'-diazostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid disodium salt into the LbL films. After cross-linking by UV irradiation, the stability of the photo-cross-linked multilayer is highly improved as evidenced by the lack of dissolution under ultrasonication in saturated SDS aqueous solutions for 10 min. Moreover, by taking advantage of the different stability of the LbL film before and after UV irradiation, a patterned surface can be achieved.

A cyclic acetal-functionalized urethane acrylate monomer is synthesized here and polymerized in a crystalline state without the polymerization kinetics being deleteriously affected by the solid state. Depending on the processing conditions, the cyclic acetal urethane acrylate monomer exists in either a metastable liquid state or a crystalline state at ambient conditions. Due to mobility restrictions, extremely poor polymerization kinetics and functional group conversions are typically achieved in solid state polymerizations. However, the solid-state photopolymerization of a cyclic acetal urethane acrylate results in nearly identical polymerization rates and ultimately higher conversion in the crystalline state than in the liquid state under otherwise identical conditions. We conclude that the crystallization process occurs in such a manner as to template the acrylic double bonds in a structure that facilitates rapid, minimally activated propagation.

The tremendous diversity of materials properties available with polymers is due in large part to the ability to design structures from the monomeric state. The ease of use of comonomer mixtures only expands this versatility. While final polymer properties are obviously important in the selection or development of a material for a given purpose, for a number of applications, such as optical fiber coatings, photolithography and microelectronics, the additional requirement of a very rapid polymerization process may be equally critical. A class of unusually reactive mono-(meth)acrylate monomers bearing secondary functionality that includes carbonates, carbamates and oxazolidones, has been demonstrated but not fully explained. Here, the influence of an integral cyclic carbonate functional group on (meth)acrylate photopolymerization kinetics is examined in detail with respect to monomers with a wide variety of alternative secondary functionality structure as well as in comparison to conventional mono- and di-(meth)acrylates. The kinetic results from full cure studies of several cyclic carbonate-containing monomers clearly highlight specific structural variations that effectively promote monomer reactivity. Copolymerizations with tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate reflect similar dramatic kinetic effects associated with the novel monomers while partial cure homopolymerization studies reveal exceptional dark cure behavior linked to observations of uncommonly low ratios of termination to propagation rates throughout the conversion profile. Temperature effects on reaction kinetics, including both reaction rate and the individual kinetic parameters, as well as the temperature dependence of hydrogen bonding interactions specifically involving the secondary functional groups are probed as a means to understand better the fundamentally interesting and practically important behavior of these monomers.

Biocompatible carboxyethyl chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (CECS/PVA) nanofibers were successfully prepared by electrospinning of aqueous CECS/PVA solution. The composite nanofibrous membranes were subjected to detailed analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). SEM images showed that the morphology and diameter of the nanofibers were mainly affected by the weight ratio of CECS/PVA. XRD and DSC demonstrated that there was strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the molecules of CECS and PVA. The crystalline microstructure of the electrospun fibers was not well developed. The potential use of the CECS/PVA electrospun fiber mats as scaffolding materials for skin regeneration was evaluated in vitro using mouse fibroblasts (L929) as reference cell lines. Indirect cytotoxicity assessment of the fiber mats indicated that the CECS/PVA electrospun mat was nontoxic to the L929 cell. Cell culture results showed that fibrous mats were good in promoting the cell attachment and proliferation. This novel electrospun matrix would be used as potential wound dressing for skin regeneration.
