The programmed assembly of nanoscale building blocks into multicomponent hierarchical structures is a powerful strategy for the bottom-up construction of functional materials. To develop this concept, our team has explored the use of molecular clusters as superatomic building blocks to fabricate new classes of materials. The library of molecular clusters is rich with exciting properties, including diverse functionalization, redox activity, and magnetic ordering, so the resulting cluster-assembled solids, which we term superatomic crystals (SACs), hold the promise of high tunability, atomic precision, and robust architectures among a diverse range of other material properties. Molecular clusters have only seldom been used as precursors for functional materials. Our team has been at the forefront of new developments in this exciting research area, and this Account focuses on our progress toward designing materials from cluster-based precursors. In particular, this Account discusses (1) the design and synthesis of molecular cluster superatomic building blocks, (2) their self-assembly into SACs, and (3) their resulting collective properties. The set of molecular clusters discussed herein is diverse, with different cluster cores and ligand arrangements to create an impressive array of solids. The cluster cores include octahedral M6E8and cubane M4E4 (M = metal; E = chalcogen), which are typically passivated by a shell of supporting ligands, a feature upon which we have expanded upon by designing and synthesizing more exotic ligands that can be used to direct solid-state assembly. Building from this library, we have designed whole families of binary SACs where the building blocks are held together through electrostatic, covalent, or van der Waals interactions. Using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) to determine the atomic structure, a remarkable range of compositional variability is accessible. We can also use this technique, in tandem with vibrational spectroscopy, to ascertain features about the constituent superatomic building blocks, such as the charge of the cluster cores, by analysis of bond distances from the SCXRD data. The combination of atomic precision and intercluster interactions in these SACs produces novel collective properties, including tunable electrical transport, crystalline thermal conductivity, and ferromagnetism. In addition, we have developed a synthetic strategy to insert redox-active guests into the superstructure of SACs via single-crystal-to-single-crystal intercalation. This intercalation process allows us to tune the optical and electrical transport properties of the superatomic crystal host. These properties are explored using a host of techniques, including Raman spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, electrical transport measurements, electronic absorption spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and frequency-domain thermoreflectance. Superatomic crystals have proven to be both robust and tunable, representing a new method of materials design and architecture. This Account demonstrates how precisely controlling the structure and properties of nanoscale building blocks is key in developing the next generation of functional materials; several examples are discussed and detailed herein. The aim of this study is to link polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surface characteristics with its wetting properties in the nanoscale. To do this using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, three series of rough PTFE surfaces were generated by annealing and compressing and next characterized by the application of the MD version of the atomic force microscopy (AFM) method. The values of specific surface areas were additionally calculated. The TIP4P/2005 water model was used to study the wetting properties of obtained PTFE samples. The simulated water contact angle (WCA) value for the most flat (but slightly rough) sample having PTFE density is equal to 106.94°, and it is close to the value suggested for a perfect PTFE surface on the basis of experimental results. Also, the changes in the WCA with PTFE compression are in the same range as experimentally reported. The obtained MD simulation results make it possible to link, for the first time, the WCA values with the surface MD–AFM root-mean-square roughness and with the PTFE density. Finally, we show that for PTFE wetting in the nanoscale, the line tension is negligible and the Bormashenko’s equation reduces to the Cassie–Baxter (CB) model. Lightweight nanocomposites reinforced with carbon nanotube (CNT) assemblies raise the prospects for a range of high-tech engineering applications. However, a correlation between their heterogeneous chemical structure and spatial organization of nanotubes should be clearly understood to maximize their performance. Here, we implement the advanced imaging capabilities of atomic force microscopy combined with near-field infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) to analyze the intricate chemical structure of CNT fiber-reinforced thermoset nanocomposites. As an example, we unravel the chemical composition of a nanothin polymer interphase exclusively from CNT assemblies and visualize in a two- and three-dimensional format with resolution of sub-30 nm. We furthermore introduce a contact frequency map colocalized with CNTs and surrounding polymer, which might correlate the local mechanical properties with polymer chemistry and the high anisotropy of CNTs. Nanoresolved chemical imaging offers possibilities for in-depth characterization of next-generation composite materials and devices based on CNT assemblies interacting with a certain chemical environment. We investigate the solvatochromic effect of a Fe-based spin-crossover (SCO) compound via ambient pressure soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (AP-XAS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). AP-XAS provides the direct evidence of the spin configuration for the Fe(II) 3d states of the SCO material upon in situ exposure to specific gas or vapor mixtures; concurrent changes in nanoscale topography and mechanical characteristics are revealed via AFM imaging and AFM-based force spectroscopy, respectively. We find that exposing the SCO material to gaseous helium promotes an effective decrease of the transition temperature of its surface layers, while the exposure to methanol vapor causes opposite surfacial and bulk solvatochromic effects. Surfacial solvatochromism is accompanied by a dramatic reduction of the surface layers stiffness. We propose a rationalization of the observed effects based on interfacial dehydration and solvation phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anionic boron cluster compounds (ABCCs) are intrinsically amphiphilic building blocks suitable for nanochemistry. ABCCs are involved in atypical weak interactions, notably dihydrogen bonding, due to their peculiar polyhedral structure, consisting of negatively charged B-H units. The most striking feature of ABCCs that differentiates them from typical surfactants is the lack of head-and-tail structure. Furthermore, their structure can be described as intrinsically amphiphilic or aquaneutral. Therefore, classical terms established to describe self-assembly of classical amphiphiles are insufficient and need to be reconsidered. The opinions and theories focused on the solution behavior of ABCCs are briefly discussed. Moreover, a comparison between ABCCs with other amphiphilic systems is made focusing on the explanation of enthalpy-driven micellization or relations between hydrophobic and chaotropic effects. Despite the unusual structure, ABCCs still show self- and coassembly properties comparable to classical amphiphiles such as ionic surfactants. They self-assemble into micelles in water according to the closed association model. The most typical features of ABCCs solution behavior is demonstrated on calorimetry, NMR spectroscopy, and tensiometry experiments. Altogether, the unique features of ABCCs makes them a valuable inclusion into the nanochemisty toolbox to develop novel nanostructures both alone and with other molecules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interaction of functional nanoparticles with cells and model biomembranes has been widely studied to evaluate the effectiveness of the particles as potential drug delivery vehicles and bioimaging labels as well as in understanding nanoparticle cytotoxicity effects. Charged nanoparticles, in particular, with tunable surface charge have been found to be effective in targeting cellular membranes as well as the subcellular matrix. However, a microscopic understanding of the underlying physical principles that govern nanoparticle binding, uptake, or diffusion on cells is lacking. Here, we report the first experimental studies of nanoparticle diffusion on model biomembranes and correlate this to the existence of nanoscale dynamics and structural heterogeneities using super-resolution stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy. Using confocal and STED microscopy coupled with fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), we provide novel insight on why these nanoparticles show enhanced binding on two-component lipid bilayers as compared to single-component membranes and how binding and diffusion is correlated to subdiffraction nanoscale dynamics and structure. The enhanced binding is also dictated, in part, by the presence of structural and dynamic heterogeneity, as revealed by STED-FCS studies, which could potentially be used to understand enhanced nanoparticle binding in raft-like domains in cell membranes. In addition, we also observe a clear correlation between the enhanced nanoparticle diffusion on membranes and the extent of membrane penetration by the nanoparticles. Our results not only have a significant impact on our understanding of nanoparticle binding and uptake as well as diffusion in cell and biomembranes, but have very strong implications for uptake mechanisms and diffusion of other biomolecules, like proteins on cell membranes and their connections to functional membrane nanoscale platform. Earthquakes are generally caused by unstable stick-slip motion of faults. This stick-slip phenomenon, along with other frictional properties of materials at the macroscale, is well-described by empirical rate and state friction (RSF) laws. Here we study stick-slip behavior for nanoscale single-asperity silica-silica contacts in atomic force microscopy experiments. The stick-slip is quasiperiodic, and both the amplitude and spatial period of stick-slip increase with normal load and decrease with the loading point (i.e., scanning) velocity. The peak force prior to each slip increases with the temporal period logarithmically, and decreases with velocity logarithmically, consistent with stick-slip behavior at the macroscale. However, unlike macroscale behavior, the minimum force after each slip is independent of velocity. The temporal period scales with velocity in a nearly power law fashion with an exponent between -1 and -2, similar to macroscale behavior. With increasing velocity, stick-slip behavior transitions into steady sliding. In the transition regime between stick-slip and smooth sliding, some slip events exhibit only partial force drops. The results are interpreted in the context of interfacial chemical bond formation and rate effects previously identified for nanoscale contacts. These results contribute to a physical picture of interfacial chemical bond-induced stick-slip, and further establish RSF laws at the nanoscale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The tribological properties of two-dimensional (2D) atomic layers are quite different from three-dimensional continuum materials because of the unique mechanical responses of 2D layers. It is known that friction on graphene shows a remarkable decreasing behavior as the number of layers increases, which is caused by the puckering effect. On other graphene derivatives, such as graphene oxide (GO) or reduced graphene oxide (rGO), the thickness dependence of friction is important because of the possibilities for technical applications. In this report, we demonstrate unexpected layer-dependent friction behavior on GO and rGO layers. Friction force microscopy measurements show that nanoscale friction on GO does not depend on the number of layers; however, after reduction, friction on rGO shows an inverse thickness dependence compared with pristine graphene. We show that the friction on rGO is higher than that on SiO2 at low load, and that an interesting crossover behavior at higher load occurs because of the lower friction coefficient and higher adhesion of the rGO. Knowledge of the nanoscale distribution of proteins in chromatographic resins is critical to our mechanistic understanding of separations performance. However, the nano- to mesoscale architecture of these materials is challenging to characterize using conventional techniques. Small-angle neutron scattering was used to probe (1) the nano- to mesoscale structure of chromatographic media and (2) protein sorption in these media in situ with protein-scale resolution. In particular, we characterize the effect of the architecture of cellulose-based and traditional and dextran-modified agarose-based ion-exchange resins on the nanoscale distribution of a relatively small protein (lysozyme) and two larger proteins (lactoferrin and a monoclonal antibody) at different protein loadings. Traditional agarose-based resins (SP Sepharose FF) can be envisioned as comprising long, thin strands of helical resin material around which the proteins adsorb, while higher static capacities are achieved in dextran-modified resins (SP Sepharose XL and Capto S) due to protein partitioning into the increased effective binding volume provided by the dextran. While protein size is shown not to affect the underlying sorption behavior in agarose-based resins such as SP Sepharose FF and XL, it plays an important role in the cellulose-based S HyperCel and the more highly cross-linked agarose-based Capto S, where size-exclusion effects prevent larger proteins from binding to the base matrix resin strands. Based on the data, we propose that entropic partitioning effects such as depletion forces may drive the observed protein crowding. In general, these observations elucidate the structure and point to the mechanism of protein partitioning in different classes of chromatographic materials, providing guidance for optimizing their performance. The reduced magnitude of the optical trapping forces exerted over sub-200 nm dielectric nanoparticles complicates their optical manipulation, hindering the development of techniques and studies based on it. Improvement of trapping capabilities for such tiny objects requires a deep understanding of the mechanisms beneath them. Traditionally, the optical forces acting on dielectric nanoparticles have been only correlated with their volume, and the size has been traditionally identified as a key parameter. However, the most recently published research results have shown that the electrostatic characteristics of a sub-100 nm dielectric particle could also play a significant role. Indeed, at present it is not clear what optical forces depend. In this work, we designed a set of experiments in order to elucidate the different mechanism and properties (i.e., size and/or electrostatic properties) that governs the magnitude of optical forces. The comparison between experimental data and numerical simulations have shown that the double layer induced at nanoparticle's surface, not considered in the classical description of nanoparticle's polarizability, plays a relevant role determining the magnitude of the optical forces. Here, the presented results constitute the first step toward the development of the dielectric nanoparticle over which enhanced optical forces could be exerted, enabling their optical manipulation for multiples purposes ranging from fundamental to applied studies. Atomic force microscopy coupled with infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) was combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the tridimensional lamella assembly and polymer segregation mechanism at the nanoscale of equimolar crystalline/crystalline poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) blends, isothermally crystallized at different temperatures. The combination of solvent etching and thermal quenching-induced fractures of spherulites enabled the direct visualization of the lamella assembly and interior 3D spherulitic structure by SEM. Two different spherulitic patterns (banded and cone-like) were investigated after removing the PEG by ethanol etching. The banded spherulites are composed of perpendicularly oriented lamellae while flat-on lamellae are observed in the valleys. The transition ridge-valley region contains right-handed, helically twisted lamellae. Cone-like spherulites are composed of highly ordered lamellae about 500 nm deep from the sample-air interface, and disordered structures are found deeper. The AFM-IR images and nanoscale infrared spectra reveal that the PEG components are mainly trapped into various interlamellae regions of PHB depending on the structure of the PHB crystal template. We report herein, for the first time, several tridimensional chemical images with full information on the diffusion of PEG in the PHB structure at the nanoscale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multi-nanolayered polystyrene/poly(l,l-lactide) (PS/PLLA) films were obtained by the layer-multiplying coextrusion process, with an individual PLLA layer thickness as thin as 20 nm. The confinement of the amorphous PLLA induced a change in the molecular mobility, evidenced by a drop of the cooperative rearranging region (CRR) size at the glass transition. The annealing of confined PLLA layers revealed slower crystallization kinetics and two-dimensional crystalline growth geometry. Furthermore, the annealing of PLLA in confined layers allowed a decoupling between the amorphous and crystalline phase, evidenced by the absence of a rigid amorphous fraction (RAF). As a consequence, the dynamic heterogeneity at the glass transition remained unaffected by the annealing procedure. In bulk polymers, where the level of coupling between amorphous and crystals is high, the glass transition temperature increased significantly whereas the CRR size fell. It is deduced that the glass transition dynamics in semicrystalline polymers is strongly related to the mobility landscape at the interface with crystals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ability to manipulate block copolymers on the nanoscale has led to many scientific and technological advances. These include nanoscale ordered bulk and thin films and also solution phase components; these are promising materials for making smaller ordered electronics, selective membranes, and also biomedical applications. The ability to manipulate block copolymer material architectures on such small scales has risen from thorough investigations into the properties that affect the architectures. Polyelectrolytes are an important class of polymers that are used to make amphiphilic block copolymers. In this context the authors synthesized polystyrene-b-polyphosphonium block copolymers with different anions coordinated to the polyphosphonium block in order to study the effect of the anion on the aqueous self-assembly of the polymers. The anions play an important role in the solubility of the monomeric materials which results in differences in the self-assembly observed through dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. We carried out a series of molecular dynamics simulations in order to examine the evaporative cooling of a nanoscale droplet of a Lennard-Jones liquid. After thermally equilibrating a droplet at a temperature Tini/Tt ≃ 1.2 (Tt is the triple-point temperature), we started the evaporation into vacuum by removing vaporized particles and monitoring the change in droplet size and the temperature inside. As free evaporation proceeds, the droplet reaches a deep supercooled liquid state of T/Tt ≃ 0.7. The temperature was found to be uniform in spite of the fast evaporative cooling on the surface. The time evolution of the evaporating droplet properties was satisfactorily explained with a simple one-dimensional phase-change model. After a sufficiently long run, the supercooled droplet was crystallized into a polycrystalline fcc structure. The crystallization is a stochastic nucleation process. The time and the temperature of inception were evaluated over 42 samples, which indicate the existence of a stability limit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A comprehensive overview of the process of digestive ripening that is known to convert polydisperse nanocrystals to monodisperse ones is presented. Apart from highlighting the role of organic molecules (ligands) in achieving size control, the roles of other parameters such as the nanocrystal-ligand binding strength and the temperature at which the reaction is carried out in accomplishing size control are also delineated. The generality of the procedure is illustrated by providing examples of how it is used to prepare monodisperse nanocrystals of different metals, alloy systems, and ultrasmall nanocrystals and also to narrow the size distribution in complex binary and ternary nanocrystal systems. Finally, the current status as far as the theoretical understanding of how size control is being achieved by digestive ripening is laid out, emphasizing at the same time the necessity to undertake more systematic studies to completely realize the full potential of this practically very useful procedure. The self-assembly of supramolecular architectures bound together by noncovalent interactions offers, at present, the most promising route to constructing devices at the nanoscale. However, the ability to pick molecular components that will result in a desired supramolecular structure and functionality remains a challenge. We suggest these goals can be met by using easily computed descriptors that correlate molecular form and formula with supramolecular architecture and energetics. Using a combination of theory and experiment, we show the feasibility of such an approach for a set of molecules comprised of three hosts (carboxylic acid derivatives of phenyleneethynylene) and five guests (naphthalene, phenanthrene, benzo-c-phenanthrene, benzo-ghi-perylene, and coronene), self-assembled on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite. Both scanning tunneling microscopy experiments and density functional theory calculations show that the host-guest combinations display rich structural diversity, assembling in hexagonal, linear, or random glass-like patterns. For certain host-guest combinations, the introduction of the guest triggers structural reorganization, including a disorder-to-order transition. By correlating with computed free energies, we formulate host and guest descriptors. These descriptors can be evaluated at essentially zero computational cost, as they depend only on the geometry and number of chemical motifs of specific types in the isolated molecules. However, they can successfully predict the structures and energetics of the host-guest assemblies, including systems not included in the original database used when determining the form of the descriptors. Structures of the same kind are found to cluster in the descriptor space. This suggests the way forward for the descriptor-based rational design of self-assembled nanostructured systems on surfaces. Classical nucleation theory predicts that a binary system which is immiscible in the bulk should become miscible at the nanoscale when lowering its size below a critical size. Here we tackle the problem of miscibility in nanoalloys with a combination of ab initio and atomistic calculations, developing a statistical-mechanics approach for the free energy cost of forming phase-separated aggregates. We apply it to the controversial case of AuCo nanoalloys. AuCo is immiscible in the bulk, but a rich variety of nanoparticle configurations, both phase-separated and intermixed, have been obtained experimentally. Our calculations strongly point to the permanence of an equilibrium miscibility gap down to the nanoscale and to the nonexistence of a critical size below which phase separation is impossible. We show that this is due to nanoscale effects of general character, caused by the existence of preferred nucleation sites in nanoparticles, which lower the free-energy cost for phase separation with respect to bulk systems. Multiple emulsions have received great interest due to their ability to be used as templates for the production of multicompartment particles for a variety of applications. However, scaling these complex droplets to nanoscale dimensions has been a challenge due to limitations on their fabrication methods. Here, we report the development of oil-in-water-in-oil (O1/W/O2) double nanoemulsions via a two-step high-energy method and their use as templates for complex nanogels comprised of inner oil droplets encapsulated within a hydrogel matrix. Using a combination of characterization methods, we determine how the properties of the nanogels are controlled by the size, stability, internal morphology, and chemical composition of the nanoemulsion templates from which they are formed. This allows for identification of compositional and emulsification parameters that can be used to optimize the size and oil encapsulation efficiency of the nanogels. Our templating method produces oil-laden nanogels with high oil encapsulation efficiencies and average diameters of 200-300 nm. In addition, we demonstrate the versatility of the system by varying the types of inner oil, the hydrogel chemistry, the amount of inner oil, and the hydrogel network cross-link density. We demonstrate an exceptionally bright photon source based on a single nitrogen-vacancy center (NV center) in a nanodiamond (ND) placed in the nanoscale gap between two monocrystalline silver cubes in a dimer configuration. The system is operated near saturation at a stable photon rate of 850 kcps, while we further achieve strongly polarized emission and high single photon purity, evident by the measured autocorrelation with a g(2)(0) value of 0.08. These photon source features are key parameters for quantum technological applications, such as secure communication based on quantum key distribution. The cube antenna is assembled with an atomic force microscope, which allows us to predetermine the dipole orientation of the NV center and optimize cube positioning accordingly, while also tracking the evolution of emission parameters from isolated ND to the one- and two-cube configuration. The experiment is well described by finite element modeling, assuming an instrinsic quantum efficiency of 0.35. We attribute the large photon rate of the assembled photon source, to increased quantum efficiency of the NV center and high antenna efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The investigation of phononic collective excitations in soft matter systems at the molecular scale has always been challenging due to limitations of experimental techniques in resolving low-energy modes. Recent advances in inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) enabled the study of such systems with unprecedented spectral contrast at meV excitation energies. In particular, it has become possible to shed light on the low-energy collective motions in materials whose morphology and phase behavior can easily be manipulated, such as mesogenic systems. The understanding of collective mode behavior with a Q-dependence is the key to implement heat management based on the control of a sample structure. The latter has great potential for a large number of energy-inspired innovations. As a first step toward this goal, we carried out high contrast IXS measurements on a liquid crystal sample, D7AOB, which exhibits solid-like dynamic features, such as the coexistence of longitudinal and transverse phononic modes. For the first time, we found that these terahertz phononic excitations persist in the crystal, smectic A, and isotropic phases. Furthermore, the intermediate smectic A phase is shown to support a van der Waals-mediated nonhydrodynamic mode with an optical-like phononic behavior. The tunability of the collective excitations at nanometer-terahertz scales via selection of the sample mesogenic phase represents a new opportunity to manipulate optomechanical properties of soft metamaterials. Single-molecule (SM) surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) have emerged as analytical techniques for characterizing molecular systems in nanoscale environments. SERS and TERS use plasmonically enhanced Raman scattering to characterize the chemical information on single molecules. Additionally, TERS can image single molecules with subnanometer spatial resolution. In this review, we cover the development and history of SERS and TERS, including the concept of SERS hot spots and the plasmonic nanostructures necessary for SM detection, the past and current methodologies for verifying SMSERS, and investigations into understanding the signal heterogeneities observed with SMSERS. Moving on to TERS, we cover tip fabrication and the physical origins of the subnanometer spatial resolution. Then, we highlight recent advances of SMSERS and TERS in fields such as electrochemistry, catalysis, and SM electronics, which all benefit from the vibrational characterization of single molecules. SMSERS and TERS provide new insights on molecular behavior that would otherwise be obscured in an ensemble-averaged measurement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reproducible gram-scale synthesis of crystalline nanoscale multiferroics is critical for the development of the next generation of commercially relevant electronic devices. Of the subset of multiferroic materials, yttrium manganese oxide (YMnO3) is highly attractive, because of its large magneto-electric coupling constants and the recent observation of giant polarization under pressure in these types of rare earth manganites. Utilizing a unique synthetic methodology that combines metal-oleate thermal degradation with the use of a molten salt protocol, we were able to reproducibly generate monodisperse distributions of morphologically distinctive yttrium manganese oxides. Specifically, using a molten NaCl flux, we were able to synthesize phase-pure, single-crystalline hexagonal YMnO3 nanoplates, measuring 441 ± 241 nm in diameter and 46 ± 6 nm in height. Moreover, these nanoplates gave rise to multiferroic behavior, which was confirmed by the observation of a ferroelectric phase from a combination of high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis. Magnetic measurements are consistent with the onset of a spin glass state below 5 K. To highlight the generalizability of the synthetic method we have developed herein, as a demonstration of principle, we have also successfully used the same protocol to produce nanocubes of lanthanum aluminum oxide (LaAlO3). Stacking of guanine quartets (GQs) can trigger the formation of DNA or RNA quadruple helices, which play numerous biochemical roles. The GQs are stabilized by alkali cations, mainly K+ and Na+, which can reside in, or channel through, the central axis of the GQ stems. Further, ion conduction through GQ wires can be leveraged for nanochemistry applications. G-quadruplex systems have been extensively studied by classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using pair-additive force fields or by quantum-chemical (QC) calculations. However, the non-polarizable force fields are very approximate, while QC calculations lack the necessary sampling. Thus, ultimate description of GQ systems would require long-enough simulations using advanced polarizable molecular mechanics (MM). However, to perform such calculations, it is first mandatory to evaluate the method’s accuracy using benchmark QC. We report such an evaluation for SIBFA polarizable MM, bearing on the channeling (movement) of an alkali cation (Li+, Na+, K+, or Rb+) along the axis of two stacked G quartets interacting with either one or two ions. The QC energy profiles display markedly different features depending upon the cation but can be retrieved in the majority of cases by the SIBFA profiles. An appropriate balance of first-order (electrostatic and short-range repulsion) and second-order (polarization, charge-transfer, and dispersion) contributions within ΔE is mandatory. With two cations in the channel, the relative weights of the second-order contributions increase steadily upon increasing the ion size. In the G8 complexes with two K+ or two Rb+ cations, the sum of polarization and charge-transfer exceeds the first order terms for all ion positions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unlocking the full performance capabilities of battery materials will require a thorough understanding of the underlying electrochemical mechanisms at a variety of length scales. A broad arsenal of X-ray microscopy and mapping techniques is now available to probe these processes down to the nanoscale. The tunable nature of X-ray sources allows for the extraction of chemical states through spectromicroscopy. The addition of phase contrast imaging can retrieve the complex-valued refraction of the material, giving an even more nuanced chemical picture. Tomography and coherent Bragg diffraction imaging provide a reconstructed three-dimensional volume of the specimen, as well as internal strain information from the latter. Many recent insights into battery materials have been achieved through the creative use of these, and similar, methods. Experiments performed while the battery is being actively cycled reveal behavior that differs significantly from what is observed at equilibrium and metastable conditions. Planned improvements to X-ray source brightness and coherence will extend these techniques by alleviating the current trade-off in time, chemical, and spatial resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe a 2 h introductory laboratory procedure that prepares a novel magnetic antimicrobial activated carbon nanocomposite in which nanoscale sized magnetite and silver particles are incorporated (MACAg). The MACAg nanocomposite has achieved the synergistic properties derived from its components and demonstrated its applicability as an effective and recoverable antimicrobial agent for water disinfection. The principle is successfully illustrated by a significant reduction in the number of microbes in an Escherichia coli (E. coli) solution of 2 x 106 colony forming units following its treatment with MACAg for 10 min. The exercise allows the college students to (1) be introduced to an exciting class of advanced materials, known as nanocomposites, at an early stage, (2) gain working experiences at nanochemistry-microbiology interface, and (3) see the use and experience the fun of chemistry. The experiment uses readily available materials, can be run in a general or introductory chemistry laboratory environment, and is well received and enjoyed by the students. Aggregation/assembly induced emission (AIE) has been observed for metal nanoclusters (NCs), but the origin of the enhanced emission is not fully understood, yet. In this work, the significant contribution of metal defects on AIE is revealed by engineering the self-assembly process of Cu NCs using ethanol. The presence of ethanol leads to a rapid assembly of NCs into ultrathin nanosheets, promoting the formation of metal defects-rich surface. Detailed studies and computer simulation confirm that the metal defects-rich nanosheets possess increased Cu(I)-to-Cu(0) ratio, which greatly influences ligand-to-metal-metal charge transfer and therewith facilitates the radiative relaxation of excitons. Solid-state electrolytes are known for nonflammability, dendrite blocking, and stability over large potential windows. Garnet-based solid-state electrolytes have attracted much attention for their high ionic conductivities and stability with lithium metal anodes. However, high-interface resistance with lithium anodes hinders their application to lithium metal batteries. Here, we demonstrate an ultrathin, conformal ZnO surface coating by atomic layer deposition for improved wettability of garnet solid-state electrolytes to molten lithium that significantly decreases the interface resistance to as low as ~20 ω·cm2. The ZnO coating demonstrates a high reactivity with lithium metal, which is systematically characterized. As a proof-of-concept, we successfully infiltrated lithium metal into porous garnet electrolyte, which can potentially serve as a self-supported lithium metal composite anode having both high ionic and electrical conductivity for solid-state lithium metal batteries. Morphology-controlled nanoparticles of high entropy intermetallic compounds are quickly becoming high-value targets for catalysis. Their ordered structures with multiple distinct crystallographic sites, coupled with the "cocktail effect" that emerges from randomly mixing a large number of elements, yield catalytic active sites capable of achieving advanced catalytic functions. Despite this growing interest, little is known about the pathways by which high entropy intermetallic nanoparticles form and grow in solution. As a result, controlling their morphology remains challenging. Here, we use the high entropy intermetallic compound (Pd,Rh,Ir,Pt)Sn, which adopts a NiAs-related crystal structure, as a model system for understanding how nanoparticle morphology, composition, and structure evolve during synthesis in solution using a slow-injection reaction. By performing a time-point study, we establish the initial formation of palladium-rich cube-like Pd-Sn seeds onto which the other metals deposit over time, concomitant with continued incorporation of tin. For (Pd,Rh,Ir,Pt)Sn, growth occurs on the corners, resulting in a sample having a mixture of flower-like and cube-like morphologies. We then synthesize and characterize a library of 14 distinct intermetallic nanoparticle systems that comprise all possible binary, ternary, and quaternary constituents of (Pd,Rh,Ir,Pt)Sn. From these studies, we correlated compositions, morphologies, and growth pathways with the constituent elements and their competitive reactivities, ultimately mapping out a framework that rationalizes the key features of the high entropy (Pd,Rh,Ir,Pt)Sn intermetallic nanoparticles based on those of their simpler constituents. We then validated these design guidelines by applying them to the synthesis of a morphologically pure variant of flowerlike (Pd,Rh,Ir,Pt)Sn particles as well as a series of (Pd,Rh,Ir,Pt)Sn particles with tunable morphologies based on control of composition.

Methods for depositing thin films are important in generating functional materials for diverse applications in a wide variety of fields. Over the last half-century, the layer-by-layer assembly of nanoscale films has received intense and growing interest. This has been fueled by innovation in the available materials and assembly technologies, as well as the film-characterization techniques. In this Review, we explore, discuss, and detail innovation in layer-by-layer assembly in terms of past and present developments, and we highlight how these might guide future advances. A particular focus is on conventional and early developments that have only recently regained interest in the layer-by-layer assembly field. We then review unconventional assemblies and approaches that have been gaining popularity, which include inorganic/organic hybrid materials, cells and tissues, and the use of stereocomplexation, patterning, and dip-pen lithography, to name a few. A relatively recent development is the use of layer-by-layer assembly materials and techniques to assemble films in a single continuous step. We name this “quasi�-layer-by-layer assembly and discuss the impacts and innovations surrounding this approach. Finally, the application of characterization methods to monitor and evaluate layer-by-layer assembly is discussed, as innovation in this area is often overlooked but is essential for development of the field. While we intend for this Review to be easily accessible and act as a guide to researchers new to layer-by-layer assembly, we also believe it will provide insight to current researchers in the field and help guide future developments and innovation. The mechanochemical effects of 5 nm spherical heterogeneities on the reactivity of shocked crystalline erythritol tetranitrate (ETN), an emerging improvised explosive, are revealed for the first time. Reactive molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with the symmetric plate-impact technique, are employed to characterize different stages of the process, including shock-void interaction, void collapse, enhanced reactivity, and subsequent molecular decomposition. The formation of supersonic nanojets from the proximal void surface is observed to greatly enhance local heating following impact of the nanojets on the distant void surface. It is demonstrated that the nanovoid collapse closely matches a Rayleigh-type hydrodynamic bubble collapse, including a spherical-to-crescent shape transformation. The chemical decomposition mechanism of condensed phase ETN is analyzed and is shown to follow a unimolecular path. A stoichiometric two-dimensional (2-D) WO3 layer has been fabricated by vapor-phase deposition of (WO3)3 clusters onto a Pd(100) surface and characterized by a combined experimental/theoretical multitechnique approach. The oxide forms a WO2 + O bilayer with a well-ordered c(2 × 2) structure, displaying at the full monolayer coverage a regular nanoscale pattern of antiphase domain boundaries, as revealed by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and rationalized by DFT analysis as a consequence of elastic strain relief. The stability of the WO2 + O bilayer is provided by polarity compensation via charge rearrangement at the WO3/Pd interface and allows for surface redox chemistry via reversible release and restoration of oxygen atoms of the tungstyl or W O groups. We directly measure the free energy of confinement for semiflexible polymers from the nanoscale to bulk regimes in slit-like confinement. We use convex lens-induced confinement (CLiC) microscopy of DNA to directly count molecules at equilibrium in a single chamber of smoothly increasing height. Our data, acquired across a continuum of confinement regimes, provide a bridge with which to connect scaling theories established for qualitatively different regimes. We present new experimental data and simulations that connect the Odijk theory describing sub-persistence-length confinement, the interpolation model by Chen and Sullivan extending Odijk to moderate confinement, and the Casassa theory describing the transition from moderate confinement to bulk. Further, this work establishes a robust, quantitative platform for understanding and manipulating biopolymers at the nanoscale, with key applications and insights toward emerging genomic analysis tools. Despite the growing scientific and technological relevance of polydopamine (PDA), a eumelanin-like adhesive material widely used for surface functionalization and coating, knowledge of its structural and physicochemical properties, including in particular the origin of paramagnetic behavior, is still far from being complete. Herein, we disclose the unique ability of ionic liquids (ILs) to disassemble PDA, either as a suspension or as a thin film, up to the nanoscale, and to establish specific interactions with the free radical centers exposed by deaggregation of potential investigative value. Immersion of PDA-coated glasses into four different ILs ([C1C1im][(CH3O)HPO2], [C1C1im][(CH3O)CH3PO2], [C1C1im][(CH3O)2PO2], [N1888][C18:1]) at room temperature caused the fast and virtually complete removal of the coating as determined by UV-visible spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the colored supernatants from PDA suspensions in ILs revealed the presence of nanostructures not exceeding 50 nm in diameter. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis indicated profound IL-dependent modifications in signal intensity, line-width, and g-factor values of PDA. These differences were interpreted in terms of a partial conversion of C-centered radicals into O-centered semiquinone-type components following destacking and interaction with the anion component in ILs. The discovery of ILs as a powerful tool to disassemble PDA under mild conditions provides a new entry both to detailed investigations of this biopolymer on the nanoscale and to mild removal of coatings from functionalized surfaces, greatly expanding the scope of PDA-based surface functionalization strategies. Conspectus: It is now possible to reliably measure single molecule conductance in a wide variety of environments including organic liquids, ultrahigh vacuum, water, ionic liquids, and electrolytes. The most commonly used methods deploy scanning probe microscopes, mechanically formed break junctions, or lithographically formed nanogap contacts. Molecules are generally captured between a pair of facing electrodes, and the junction current response is measured as a function of bias voltage. Gating electrodes can also be added so that the electrostatic potential at the molecular bridge can be independently controlled by this third noncontacting electrode. This can also be achieved in an electrolytic environment using a four-electrode bipotentiostatic configuration, which allows independent electrode potential control of the two contacting electrodes. This is commonly realized using an electrochemical STM and enables single molecule electrical characterization as a function of electrode potential and redox state of the molecular bridge. This has emerged as a powerful tool in modern interfacial electrochemistry and nanoelectrochemistry for studying charge transport across single molecules as a function of electrode potential and the electrolytic environments. Such measurements are possible in electrolytes ranging from aqueous buffers to nonaqueous ionic liquids. In this Account, we illustrate a number of examples of single molecule electrical measurements under electrode potential control use a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and demonstrate how these can help in the understanding of charge transport in single molecule junctions. Examples showing charge transport following phase coherent tunneling to incoherent charge hopping across redox active molecular bridges are shown. In the case of bipyridinium (or viologen) molecular wires, it is shown how electrochemical reduction leads to an increase of the single molecule conductance, which is controlled by the liquid electrochemical gating. This has been referred to as to a “single molecule transistor configuration” with the gate voltage being provided by the controllable potential achieved through the electrochemical double layer. It is shown how the electrolyte medium can control such gating, with ionic liquids providing more efficient gate coupling than aqueous electrolytes. Control of the conductance of viologen molecular wires can also be achieved by encapsulating the viologen redox moiety within a molecular cage, thereby controlling its immediate environment. Molecular conductance can also be gated through multiple redox states. This has been shown for the redox moiety pyrrolo-tetrathiafulvalene, which undergoes single molecule electrochemical transistor gating through three redox states in molecular junctions. Charge transport through this junction follows a two-step hopping mechanism, demonstrating the role of the redox center in electron transfer across the molecular bridge. Recent electrolyte gating studies of rigid, conjugated redox-active metal complexes with tailored terpyridine coordinating ligands and anchors are also presented. These aforementioned studies have all been performed with gold electrode contacts. The Account concludes with recent data showing that it is now possible to study single molecule electrochemical gating with nickel electrodes. This opens up new perspectives for studying interfacial charge transfer with a wide variety of other electrode materials including semiconductor electrodes and also points toward future opportunities for coupling molecular spintronics and nanoelectrochemistry. Conspectus: In the past several decades, electrochemical machining (ECM) has enjoyed the reputation of a powerful technique in the manufacturing industry. Conventional ECM methods can be classified as electrolytic machining and electroforming: the former is based on anodic dissolution and the latter is based on cathodic deposition of metallic materials. Strikingly, ECM possesses several advantages over mechanical machining, such as high removal rate, the capability of making complex three-dimensional structures, and the practicability for difficult-to-cut materials. Additionally, ECM avoids tool wear and thermal or mechanical stress on machining surfaces. Thus, ECM is widely used for various industrial applications in the fields of aerospace, automobiles, electronics, etc. Nowadays, miniaturization and integration of functional components are becoming significant in ultralarge scale integration (ULSI) circuits, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and miniaturized total analysis systems (μ-TAS). As predicted by Moore’s law, the feature size of interconnectors in ULSI circuits are down to several nanometers. In this Account, we present our perseverant research in the last two decades on how to “confine” the ECM processes to occur at micrometer or even nanometer scale, that is, to ensure ECM with nanoscale accuracy. We have been developing the confined etchant layer technique (CELT) to fabricate three-dimensional micro- and nanostructures (3D-MNS) on different metals and semiconductor materials since 1992. In general, there are three procedures in CELT: (1) generating the etchant on the surface of the tool electrode by electrochemical or photoelectrochemical reactions; (2) confining the etchant in a depleted layer with a thickness of micro- or nanometer scale; (3) feeding the tool electrode to etch the workpiece. Scavengers, which can react with the etchant, are usually adopted to form a confined etchant layer. Through the subsequent homogeneous reaction between the scavenger and the photo- or electrogenerated etchant in the electrolyte solution, the diffusion distance of the etchant is confined to micro- or nanometer scale, which ensures the nanoscale accuracy of electrochemical machining. To focus on the “confinement” of chemical etching reactions, external physical-field modulations have recently been introduced into CELT by introducing various factors such as light field, force field, hydrodynamics, and so on. Meanwhile, kinetic investigations of the confined chemical etching (CCE) systems are established based on the finite element analysis and simulations. Based on the obtained kinetic parameters, the machining accuracy is tunable and well controlled. CELT is now applicable for 1D milling, 2D polishing, and 3D microfabrication with an accuracy at nanometer scale. CELT not only inherits all the advantages of electrochemical machining but also provides advantages over photolithography and nanoimprint for its applicability to different functional materials without involving any photocuring and thermoplastic resists. Although there are some technical problems, for example, mass transfer and balance, which need to be solved, CELT has shown its prospective competitiveness in electrochemical micromachining, especially in the semiconductor industry. Metal-semiconductor hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) offer interesting synergistic properties, leading to unique behaviors that have already been exploited in photocatalysis, electrical, and optoelectronic applications. A fundamental aspect in the synthesis of metal-semiconductor hybrid NPs is the possible diffusion of the metal species through the semiconductor lattice. The importance of understanding and controlling the co-diffusion of different constituents is demonstrated in the synthesis of various hollow-structured NPs via the Kirkendall effect. Here, we used a postsynthesis room-temperature reaction between AuCl3 and InAs nanocrystals (NCs) to form metal-semiconductor core-shell hybrid NPs through the "reversed Kirkendall effect". In the presented system, the diffusion rate of the inward diffusing species (Au) is faster than that of the outward diffusing species (InAs), which results in the formation of a crystalline metallic Au core surrounded by an amorphous, oxidized InAs shell containing nanoscale voids. We used time-resolved X-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) spectroscopy to monitor the diffusion process and found that both the size of the Au core and the extent of the disorder of the InAs shell depend strongly on the Au-to-NC ratio. We have determined, based on multielement fit analysis, that Au diffuses into the NC via the kick-out mechanism, substituting for In host atoms; this compromises the structural stability of the lattice and triggers the formation of In-O bonds. These bonds were used as markers to follow the diffusion process and indicate the extent of degradation of the NC lattice. Time-resolved X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to measure the changes in the crystal structures of InAs and the nanoscale Au phases. By combining the results of XAFS, XRD, and electron microscopy, we correlated the changes in the local structure around Au, As, and In atoms and the changes in the overall InAs crystal structure. This correlative analysis revealed a co-dependence of different structural consequences when introducing Au into the InAs NCs. Therefore, this study of diffusion effects in nanocrystals has relevance to powerful concepts in solid-state nanochemistry related to processes of cation exchange, doping reactions, and diffusion mechanisms. Thermoelectrics directly converts waste heat into electricity and is considered a promising means of sustainable energy generation. While most of the recent advances in the enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) resulted from a decrease in lattice thermal conductivity by nanostructuring, there have been very few attempts to enhance electrical transport properties, i.e., the power factor. Here we use nanochemistry to stabilize bulk bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) that violates phase equilibrium, namely, phase-pure n-type K0.05Bi2Te3.18. Incorporated potassium and tellurium in Bi2Te3 far exceed their solubility limit, inducing simultaneous increase in the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient along with decrease in the thermal conductivity. Consequently, a high power factor of &#126+;43 µW cm-1 K-2 and a high ZT > 1.1 at 323 K are achieved. In this work, we designed a nanoscaled porphyrinic metalorganic framework (PorMOF) with iron porphyrin as linker and zirconium ion as node for electrochemical detection of telomerase activity. The asprepared PorMOF was characterized with scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and spectroscopic techniques and demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activity toward O2 reduction. Sequentially, the functionalization of PorMOF with streptavidin results in a water-stable electrochemical tracer for detection of telomerase. Upon the telomerasetriggered extension, the assistant DNA 1 (aDNAl)--assistant DNA 2 (aDNA2) duplex could switch into a hairpin structure, and thus, the aDNA2 was released and then hybridized with the capture DNA Therefore, the PorMOF@SA tracer could be introduced on the electrode surface via biotin-- Potential streptavidin recognition, leading to the strong electrochemical signal for readout The developed approach displayed desirable dynamic range and limitation of detection down to 30 HeLa cells mL-1 The telomerase activity was 2.2 × 10-11 IU in a single HeLa cell with good reproducibility and stability. The nanoscaled porphyrinic MOF provided a powerful platform for electrochemical signal transduction and had a promising application in the determination of various biomolecules. All-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-hexyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ([C6mmim][FSI]) and its binary mixtures with acetonitrile (ACN) have been reported for the first time. The presence of ACN as a cosolvent, similar to the effect of increasing temperature, causes enhancements in the ion translational motion and fluidity of the IL, leading to significant improvement of ionic conductivity and self-diffusion, which is well explained by a microscopic structural analysis. In neat IL and a concentrated IL mixture, self-diffusion of the cation is higher than that of the corresponding anion; however, further addition of ACN into the diluted mixtures with IL molar fractions (xIL's) below 0.50 results in more weakened interactions among the nearest ACN-anion neighbors compared to those among the ACN-cation neighbors so that the number of isolated anions is more than that of isolated cations under this condition, and the anions diffuse faster than the cations, as expected on the basis of their relative sizes. The velocity autocorrelation function analysis indicates an inverse relation between xIL and the mean collision time of each species. Additionally, at a fixed xIL, both the mean collision time and velocity randomization time of ACN are shorter than those of the ions. Gradual addition of ACN changes the morphology of nanosegregated domains and tends to disrupt ionic clusters (i.e., it scatters and decomposes both the polar and nonpolar domains) compared with pure IL, whereas both the radial and spatial distribution functions show the stabilization role of ACN in the close-contact ion-pair association. On the other hand, increasing ACN causes weakening of the structural correlations of the cation-cation and anion-anion neighbors in the solutions. ACN molecules appeared as a bridge, with balanced affinities between the polar and nonpolar domains, and no indication was observed for aggregation of ACN molecules in the studied mixtures that can rationalize good miscibility with imidazolium-based ILs. Visualizing proton-transfer processes at the nanoscale is essential for understanding the reactivity of zeolite-based catalyst materials. In this work, the Brønsted-acid-catalyzed oligomerization of styrene derivatives was used for the first time as a single molecule probe reaction to study the reactivity of individual zeolite H-ZSM-5 crystals in different zeolite framework, reactant and solvent environments. This was accomplished via the formation of distinct dimeric and trimeric fluorescent carbocations, characterized by their different photostability, as detected by single molecule fluorescence microscopy. The oligomerization kinetics turned out to be very sensitive to the reaction conditions and the presence of the local structural defects in zeolite H-ZSM-5 crystals. The remarkably photostable trimeric carbocations were found to be formed predominantly near defect-rich crystalline regions. This spectroscopic marker offers clear prospects for nanoscale quality control of zeolite-based materials. Interestingly, replacing n-heptane with 1-butanol as a solvent led to a reactivity decrease of several orders and shorter survival times of fluorescent products due to the strong chemisorption of 1-butanol onto the Brønsted acid sites. A similar effect was achieved by changing the electrophilic character of the para-substituent of the styrene moiety. Based on the measured turnover rates we have established a quantitative, single turnover approach to evaluate substituent and solvent effects on the reactivity of individual zeolite H-ZSM-5 crystals. This experiment was designed and successfully introduced to complement the nanochemistry taught to undergraduate students in a useful and interesting way. Colloidal Ag nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple, room-temperature method, and the resulting suspension was then used to study the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of methylene blue. The colloid was also characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, and these results were used to help explain some of the observed SERS features. The students looked at the effects of concentration and acquisition time on the measured SERS spectra, and the final part of the experiment was based around using their newly acquired knowledge to investigate the lowest concentration of methylene blue that could be detected. Concentrations of 5 × 10-10 M were routinely achieved. The combination of UV-visible spectroscopy, SERS, and nanochemistry made for an interesting and thought-provoking laboratory experience.
