Rotational transitions for omicron-benzyne were measured with a pulsed-beam, Fourier transform microwave spectrometer for all unique, singly substituted (super 13)C and single-D isotopomers. The new data combined with previous data for the normal isotopomer, provide a complete set of structural parameters for this molecule and the r(sub s) substitution coordinates and the coordinates from a least-squares fit are reported.

The rotational spectrum of thiozene that is S3 by Fourier transform microwave (FTM) spectroscopy of a molecular beam is detected. It is analyzed that the symmetry of S3 can detect its structure with the two geometrical parameters.

High-accuracy coupled cluster methods in combination with microcanonicalsemiclassical transition state theory are used to investigate a plausibleformation mechanism of the simplest Criegee intermediate in a CH4/O2discharge experiment. Our results suggest thatthe Criegee intermediate is produced in a three-step process: (i)production of methyl radical by cleavage of a C–H bond of CH4; (ii) association of methyl radical with molecular oxygento form a vibrationally excited methyl peroxy, which is in a rapidmicroequilibrium with the reactants; and finally, (iii) H-abstractionof CH3OO by O2, which results in the formationof cool CH2OO, which has insufficient internal energy torearrange to dioxirane. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are hybrid organic–inorganic nanoporous materials that exhibit regular crystalline lattices with relatively well-defined pore structures. Chemical functionalization of the organic linkers in the structures of MOFs affords facile control over pore size and chemical/physical properties, making MOFs attractive for a variety of industrial applications including membrane-based gas separations. A wealth of reports exists discussing the synthesis and applications of MOFs; however, relatively few reports exist discussing MOF membranes. This disparity owes to challenges associated with fabricating films of MOF materials, including poor substrate–film interactions, moisture sensitivity, and thermal/mechanical instability. Since even nanometer-scale cracks and defects can affect the performance of a membrane for gas separation, these challenges are particularly acute for the fabrication of MOF membranes. Here, we review recent progress on MOF membranes with an emphasis on their fabrication techniques, challenges involved in membrane synthesis, reported strategies to address these challenges (issues), and gas separation performance. Finally, we conclude with our perspectives on future research directions in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the effort of U.S. government agencies in identifying and prioritizing the research needs for the country's transportation sector. Over the past years, particulate matter has become one of the most important air quality problems in the country. Furthermore, the transportation planning agencies have a vested interest in understanding particulate matter problems and contributing to their effective control. In addition, non-attainment areas are required to developed a state implementation plan.

Recently, searches were made for H 2 CCS and HCCSH in a variety of interstellar environments─all of them resulted in nondetections of these two species. Recent findings have indicated the importance of destruction pathways, e.g., with atomic hydrogen, in explaining the consistent nondetection of other species, such as the H 2 C 3 O family of isomers. We have thus performed ab initio calculations looking at reactions of H 2 CCS, HCCSH, and related species with atomic hydrogen. Our results show that H 2 CCS and HCCSH are both destroyed barrierlessly by atomic hydrogen, thus providing a plausible explanation for the nondetections. We further find that subsequent reactions with atomic hydrogen can barrierlessly lead to CH 3 CH 2 SH, which has been detected. Astrochemical simulations including these reactions result not only in reproducing the observed abundance of H 2 CCS in TMC-1 but also show that CH 3 CH 2 SH, produced via our H-addition pathways and subsequently trapped on grains, can desorb in warmer sources up to abundances that match previous observations of CH 3 CH 2 SH in Orion KL. These results, taken together, point to the importance of grain-surface H-atom addition reactions and highlight the chemical links between cold prestellar cores and their subsequent, warmer evolutionary stages.

The cyanate anion (NCO - ) is a species of considerable astrophysical relevance. It is widely believed to be embedded in interstellar ices present in young stellar objects but has not yet been detected in the dense gas of the interstellar medium. Here we report highly accurate laboratory measurements of the rotational spectrum of the N 13 CO - isotopologue at submillimeter wavelengths along with the detection of three additional lines of the parent isotopologue up to 437.4 GHz. With this new data, the rotational spectrum of both isotopologues can be predicted to better 0.25 km s -1 in equivalent radial velocity up to 1 THz, more than adequate for an astronomical search in any source. Moreover, a semiexperimental equilibrium structure of the anion is derived by combining the experimental ground-state rotational constants of the two isotopologues with theoretical vibrational corrections, obtained by using the coupled-cluster method with inclusion of single and double excitations and perturbative inclusion of triple excitations (CCSD(T)). The estimated accuracy of the two bond distances is on the order of 5 × 10 -4 Å: a comparison to the values obtained by geometry optimization with the CCSD(T) method and the use of a composite scheme, including additivity and basis-set extrapolation techniques, reveals that this theoretical procedure is very accurate.

Astrochemistry lies at the nexus of astronomy, chemistry, and molecular physics. On the basis of precise laboratory data, a rich collection of more than 200 familiar and exotic molecules have been identified in the interstellar medium, the vast majority by their unique rotational fingerprint. Despite this large body of work, there is scant evidence in the radio band for the basic building blocks of chemistry on earth-five- and six-membered rings-despite long-standing and sustained efforts during the past 50 years. In contrast, a peculiar structural motif, highly unsaturated carbon in a chainlike arrangement, is instead quite common in space. The recent astronomical detection of cyanobenzene, the simplest aromatic nitrile, in the dark molecular cloud TMC-1, and soon afterward in additional prestellar and possibly protostellar sources, establishes that aromatic chemistry is likely widespread in the earliest stages of star formation. The subsequent discovery of cyanocyclopentadienes and even cyanonaphthalenes in TMC-1 provides further evidence that organic molecules of considerable complexity are readily synthesized in regions with high visual extinction but where the low temperature and pressure are remarkably low. This review focuses on laboratory efforts now underway to understand the rich transition region between linear and planar carbon structures using microwave spectroscopy. We present key features, advantages, and disadvantages of current detection methods, a discussion of the types of molecules found in space and in the laboratory, and approaches under development to identify entirely new species in complex mixtures. Studies focusing on the cyanation of hydrocarbons and the formation of benzene from acyclic precursors are highlighted, as is the role that isotopic studies might play in elucidating the chemical pathways to ring formation.

Some reactions produce extremely hot nascent products which nevertheless can form sufficiently long-lived van der Waals (vdW) complexes-with atoms or molecules from a bath gas-as to be observed via microwave spectroscopy. Theoretical calculations of such unbound resonance states can be much more challenging than ordinary bound-state calculations depending on the approach employed. One encounters not just the floppy, and perhaps multiwelled potential energy surface (PES) characteristic of vdWs complexes, but in addition, one must contend with excitation of the intramolecular modes and its corresponding influence on the PES. Straightforward computation of the (resonance) rovibrational levels of interest, involves the added complication of the unbound nature of the wave function, often treated with techniques such as introducing a complex absorbing potential. Here, we have demonstrated that a simplified approach of making a series of vibrationally effective PESs for the intermolecular coordinates-one for each reaction product vibrational quantum number of interest-can produce vdW levels for the complex with spectroscopic accuracy. This requires constructing a series of appropriately weighted lower-dimensional PESs for which we use our freely available PES-fitting code AUTOSURF. The applications of this study are the Ar-CS and Ar-SiS complexes, which are isovalent to Ar-CO and Ar-SiO, the latter of which we considered in a previously reported study. Using a series of vibrationally effective PESs, rovibrational levels and predicted microwave transition frequencies for both complexes were computed variationally. A series of shifting rotational transition frequencies were also computed as a function of the diatom vibrational quantum number. The predicted transitions were used to guide and inform an experimental effort to make complementary observations. Comparisons are given for the transitions that are within the range of the spectrometer and were successfully recorded. Calculations of the rovibrational level pattern agree to within 0.2% with experimental measurements.

The high resolution far-infrared spectrum of trans -butadiene has been reinvestigated by Fourier-transform spectroscopy at two synchrotron radiation facilities, SOLEIL and the Canadian Light Source, at temperatures ranging from 50 to 340 K. Beyond the well-studied bands, two new fundamental bands lying below 1100 cm -1 , ν 10 and ν 24 , have been assigned using a combination of cross-correlation (ASAP software) and Loomis-Wood type (LWWa software) diagrams. While the ν 24 analysis was rather straightforward, ν 10 exhibits obvious signs of a strong perturbation, presumably owing to interaction with the dark ν 9 + ν 12 state. Effective rotational constants have been derived for both the v 10 = 1 and v 24 = 1 states. Since only one weak, infrared active fundamental band (ν 23 ) of trans -butadiene remains to be observed at high resolution in the far-infrared, searches for the elusive gauche conformer can now be undertaken with considerably greater confidence in the dense ro-vibrational spectrum of the trans form.

Rotational transitions are unique identifiers of molecular species, including isotopologues. This article describes the rotational detections of two laser-volatilized salts, NaCl and KCl, made with a miniature Fourier transform millimeter-wave (FTmmW) cavity spectrometer that could one day be used to measure solid composition in the field or in space. The two salts are relevant targets for icy moons in the outer solar system, and in principle, other molecular solids could be analyzed with the FTmmW instrument. By coupling the spectrometer to a collisionally cooling laser ablation source, (a) we demonstrate that the FTmmW instrument is sensitive enough to detect ablation products, and (b) we use the small size of the FTmmW cavity to measure ablation product signal along the carrier gas beam. We find that for 532 nm nanosecond pulses, ablated molecules are widely dispersed in the carrier-gas jet. In addition to the miniature spectrometer results, we present several complementary measurements intended to characterize the laser ablation process. For pulse energies between 10 and 30 mJ, the ablation product yield increases linearly, reaching approximately 10 12 salt molecules per 30 mJ pulse. Using mass spectrometry, we observe Li + , Na + , and K + in the plumes of ablated NaCl, KCl, and LiCl, which implies dissociation of the volatilized material. We do not observe salt ions (e.g., NaCl + ). However, with 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses, the triatomic ion clusters Li 2 Cl + , Na 2 Cl + , and K 2 Cl + are produced. Finally, we observe incomplete volatilization with the nanosecond pulses: some of the ejecta are liquid droplets. The insights about ablation plume physics gleaned from these experiments should guide future implementations of the laser-volatilization technique.

Supercritical CO 2 is an appealing nontoxic, environmentally friendly solvent for the industrial extraction of many classes of compounds, from caffeine to natural product drug precursors to petrochemical impurities. Apolar in isolation, the ability of supercritical CO 2 to dissolve polar species has been empirically shown to be greatly enhanced by the addition of a small molar percentage of a polar cosolvent, often ethanol. Computational work predicts that the isolated ethanol-CO 2 complex can exist either in an electron-donor configuration or through a hydrogen-bonding one; yet, neither has been previously experimentally observed. Here, we demonstrate by rotational spectroscopy that the isolated, gas-phase ethanol-CO 2 dimer is an electron donor-acceptor complex.

The equilibrium structure of germanium dicarbide GeC 2 has been an open question since the late 1950s. Although most high-level quantum calculations predict an L-shaped geometry, a T-shaped or even a linear geometry cannot be ruled out because of the very flat potential energy surface. By recording the rotational spectrum of this dicarbide using sensitive microwave and millimeter techniques, we unambiguously establish that GeC 2 adopts a vibrationally averaged T-shaped structure in its ground state. From analysis of 14 isotopologues, a precise r 0 structure has been derived, yielding a Ge-C bond length of 1.952(1) Å and an apex angle of 38.7(2)°.

Thionitrous acid (HSNO), a potential key intermediate in biological signaling pathways, has been proposed to link NO and H2S biochemistries, but its existence and stability in vivo remain controversial. We establish that HSNO is spontaneously formed in high concentration when NO and H2S gases are mixed at room temperature in the presence of metallic surfaces. Our measurements reveal that HSNO is formed by the reaction H2S + N2O3 → HSNO + HNO2, where N2O3 is a product of NO disproportionation. These studies also suggest that further reaction of HSNO with H2S may form HNO and HSSH. The length of the S-N bond has been derived to high precision and is found to be unusually long: 1.84 Å, the longest S-N bond reported to date for an R-SNO compound. The present structural and, particularly, reactivity investigations of this elusive molecule provide a firm foundation to better understand its potential physiological chemistry and propensity to undergo S-N bond cleavage in vivo.

Replacing carbon with silicon can result in dramatic and unanticipated changes in isomeric stability, as the well-studied CO2H2 and the essentially unknown SiO2H2 systems illustrate. Guided by coupled-cluster calculations, three SiO2H2 isomers have been detected and spectroscopically characterized in a molecular beam discharge source using rotational spectroscopy. The cis,trans conformer of dihydroxysilylene HOSiOH, the ground-state isomer, and the high-energy, metastable dioxasilirane c-H2SiO2 are abundantly produced in a dilute SiH4/O2 electrical discharge, enabling precise structural determinations of both by a combination of isotopic measurements and calculated vibrational corrections. The isotopic studies also provide insight into their formation route, suggesting that c-H2SiO2 is formed promptly in the expansion but that cis,trans-HOSiOH is likely formed by secondary reactions following formation of the most stable dissociation pair, SiO + H2O. Although less abundant, the rotational spectrum of trans-silanoic acid, the silicon analogue of formic acid, HSi(O)OH, has also been observed.

Both glycolaldehyde and glyoxal were pyrolyzed in a set of flash-pyrolysis microreactors. The pyrolysis products resulting from CHO-CH2OH and HCO-CHO were detected and identified by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization mass spectrometry. Complementary product identification was provided by argon matrix infrared absorption spectroscopy. Pyrolysis pressures in the microreactor were about 100 Torr, and contact times with the microreactors were roughly 100 μs. At 1200 K, the products of glycolaldehyde pyrolysis are H atoms, CO, CH2═O, CH2═C═O, and HCO-CHO. Thermal decomposition of HCO-CHO was studied with pulsed 118.2 nm photoionization mass spectrometry and matrix infrared absorption. Under these conditions, glyoxal undergoes pyrolysis to H atoms and CO. Tunable VUV photoionization mass spectrometry provides a lower bound for the ionization energy (IE)(CHO-CH2OH) ≥ 9.95 ± 0.05 eV. The gas-phase heat of formation of glycolaldehyde was established by a sequence of calorimetric experiments. The experimental result is ΔfH298(CHO-CH2OH) = -75.8 ± 1.3 kcal mol(-1). Fully ab initio, coupled cluster calculations predict ΔfH0(CHO-CH2OH) of -73.1 ± 0.5 kcal mol(-1) and ΔfH298(CHO-CH2OH) of -76.1 ± 0.5 kcal mol(-1). The coupled-cluster singles doubles and noniterative triples correction calculations also lead to a revision of the geometry of CHO-CH2OH. We find that the O-H bond length differs substantially from earlier experimental estimates, due to unusual zero-point contributions to the moments of inertia.

The fraction of the collisionally stabilized Criegee species CH2OO produced from the ozonolysis of ethylene is calculated using a two-dimensional (E, J)-grained master equation technique and semiclassical transition-state theory based on the potential energy surface obtained from high-accuracy quantum chemical calculations. Our calculated yield of 42 ± 6% for the stabilized CH2OO agrees well, within experimental error, with available (indirect) experimental results. Inclusion of angular momentum in the master equation is found to play an essential role in bringing the theoretical results into agreement with the experiment. Additionally, yields of HO and HO2 radical products are predicted to be 13 ± 6% and 17 ± 6%, respectively. In the kinetic simulation, the HO radical product is produced mostly from the stepwise decomposition mechanism of primary ozonide rather than from dissociation of hot CH2OO.

The rotational spectrum of the elusive but fundamentally important silicon carbide SiCSi has been detected using sensitive microwave techniques aided by high-level ab initio methods. Its equilibrium structure has been determined to very high precision using isotopic substitution and vibrational corrections calculated quantum-chemically: it is an isosceles triangle with a Si-C bond length of 1.693(1) Å, and an apex angle of 114.87(5)°. Now that all four Si(m)C(n) clusters with m + n = 3 have been observed experimentally, their structure and chemical bonding can be rigorously compared. Because Si2C is so closely linked to other Si-bearing molecules that have been detected in the evolved carbon star IRC+10216, it is an extremely promising candidate for detection with radio telescopes.

Highly accurate, coupled-cluster-based quartic force fields (QFFs) have been employed recently to provide spectroscopic reference for a myriad of molecules. Here, we are extending the same approach to provide vibrational and rotational spectroscopic reference data for the sulfur analogues of HOCO, HSCO, and HOCS, in both the cis and trans conformations as well as the D and (34)S isotopologues of each system. The resulting energies corroborate previous computations showing that trans-HSCO is the lowest-energy isomer for this system. The vibrational frequencies are computed with both second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) and vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) methods. The VPT2 and VCI QFF frequencies largely agree with one another to better than 5.0 cm(-1) (often better than 1.0 cm(-1)) and are also consistent with the type of behavior exhibited in previous studies. As such, the reference data provided here should assist in analysis of environments in which these sulfur systems may be found, including the interstellar medium, combustion flames, or laboratory simulations of either.

The state-dependent spectroscopy of α-methylbenzyl radical (α-MeBz) has been studied under jet-cooled conditions. Two-color resonant two-photon ionization (2C-R2PI), laser-induced fluorescence, and dispersed fluorescence spectra were obtained for the D0-D1 electronic transition of this prototypical resonance-stabilized radical in which the methyl group is immediately adjacent to the primary radical site. Extensive Franck-Condon activity in hindered rotor levels was observed in the excitation spectrum, reflecting a reorientation of the methyl group upon electronic excitation. Dispersed fluorescence spectra from the set of internal rotor levels are combined with the excitation spectrum to obtain a global fit of the barrier heights and angular change of the methyl group in both D0 and D1 states. The best-fit methyl rotor potential in the ground electronic state (D0) is a flat-topped 3-fold potential (V3" = 151 cm(-1), V6" = 34 cm(-1)) while the D1 state has a lower barrier (V3' = 72 cm(-1), V6' = 15 cm(-1)) with Δφ = ± π/3, π, consistent with a reorientation of the methyl group upon electronic excitation. The ground state results are compared with calculations carried out at the DFT B3LYP level of theory using the 6-311+G(d,p) basis set, and a variety of excited state calculations are carried out to compare against experiment. The preferred geometry of the methyl rotor in the ground state is anti, which switches to syn in the D1 state and in the cation. The calculations uncover a subtle combination of effects that contribute to the shift in orientation and change in barrier in the excited state relative to ground state. Steric interaction favors the anti conformation, while hyperconjugation is greater in the syn orientation. The presence of a second excited state close by D1 is postulated to influence the methyl rotor properties. A resonant ion-dip infrared (RIDIR) spectrum in the alkyl and aromatic CH stretch regions was also recorded, probing in a complementary way the state-dependent conformation of α-MeBz. Using a scheme in which infrared depletion occurs between excitation and ionization steps of the 2C-R2PI process, analogous infrared spectra in D1 were also obtained, probing the response of the CH stretch fundamentals to electronic excitation. A reduced-dimension Wilson G-matrix model was implemented to simulate and interpret the observed infrared results. Finally, photoionization efficiency scans were carried out to determine the adiabatic ionization threshold of α-MeBz (IP = 6.835 ± 0.002 eV) and provide thresholds for ionization out of specific internal rotor levels, which report on the methyl rotor barrier in the cation state.

Pure rotational transitions of silicon monoxide, involving the main ((28)Si(16)O) as well as several rare isotopic species, were observed in their ground vibrational states by employing long-path absorption spectroscopy between 86 and 825 GHz (1 ≤ J" ≤ 18). Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy was used to study the J" = 0 transition frequencies in the ground and several vibrationally excited states. The vibrational excitation of the newly studied isotopologues extend to between υ = 9 and 29 for (28)Si(17)O and (30)Si(16)O, respectively. Data were extended for some previously investigated species up to υ = 51 for the main isotopologue. The high spectral resolution allowed us to resolve the hyperfine structure in (28)Si(17)O caused by the nuclear electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments of (17)O for the first time, and to resolve the much smaller nuclear spin-rotation splitting for isotopic species containing (29)Si. These data were combined with previous rotational and rovibrational (infrared) data to determine an improved set of spectroscopic parameters of SiO in one global fit which takes the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation into account. Highly accurate rotational transition frequencies for this important astronomical molecule can now be predicted well into the terahertz region with this parameter set. In addition, a more complete comparison among physical properties of group 14/16 diatomics is possible.

The formation mechanisms of silicon nitride and silicon nitrogen hydrogen films, both produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques and widely used in electronic device fabrication, are poorly understood. Identification of gas-phase intermediates formed from starting materials, typically silane, ammonia, and/or nitrogen, is a critical step in assessing the interplay between gas and surface processes in film formation. Two potential intermediates in this process, HSiNSi and H3SiNSi, have now been detected in a molecular beam by means of rotational spectroscopy. Both molecules were produced in electrical discharges of CVD-like gas mixtures and are the most readily observed silicon-nitrogen-containing molecules in the 6-20 GHz frequency range, though neither has been the subject of prior experimental or theoretical studies. HSiNSi and H3SiNSi are likely formed from reactions involving the silanitrile radical (SiN, isoelectronic to CN), implying that similar gas-phase reactions may be involved in film growth.

The rotational spectrum of nitrogen-protonated nitrous oxide (HNNO(+)), an isomer whose existence was first inferred from kinetic studies more than 30 years ago, has now been detected by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy, guided by new high-level coupled-cluster calculations of its molecular structure. From high-resolution measurements of the hyperfine splitting in its fundamental rotational transition, the rotational constant (B + C)/2 and the quadrupole tensor element χaa(N) for both nitrogen atoms have been precisely determined. The derived constants agree well with quantum-chemical calculations here and others in the literature. The χaa(N) values for the two isomers of protonated nitrous oxide are qualitatively consistent with the valence bond description of H-N═N(+)═O for the electronic structure of the nitrogen-protonated form and N≡N(+)-O-H for the oxygen-protonated form. HNNO(+) is found to be 2-4 times less abundant than NNOH(+) under a range of experimental conditions, as might be expected because this metastable isomer is known to be only ∼6 kcal mol(-1) less stable than ground-state NNOH(+) from kinetic measurements by Ferguson and co-workers.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive for gas separation membrane applications due to their microporous channels with tunable pore shape, size, and functionality. Conventional MOF membrane fabrication techniques, namely in situ and secondary growth, pose challenges for their wider commercial applications. These challenges include reproducility, scalability, and high manufacturing cost. Recognizing that the coordination chemistry of MOFs is fundamentally different from the covalent chemistry of zeolites, we developed a radically different strategy for MOF membrane synthesis. Using this new technique, we were able to produce continuous well-intergrown membranes of prototypical MOFs, HKUST-1 and ZIF-8, in a relatively short period of time (tens of min). With a minimal consumption of precursors and a greatly simplified synthesis protocol, our new technique provides potential for a continuous, scalable, reproducible, and easily commercializable route for the rapid synthesis of MOF membranes. RTD-prepared MOF membranes show greatly improved gas separation performances as compared to those prepared by conventional solvothermal methods, indicating improved membrane microstructure.

Sulfoxylic acid (HOSOH), a chemical intermediate roughly midway along the path between highly reduced (H2S) and highly oxidized sulfur (H2SO4), has been detected using Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and double resonance techniques, guided by new high-level CCSD(T) quantum-chemical calculations of its molecular structure. Rotational spectra of the two most stable isomers of HOSOH, the putative ground state with C2 symmetry and the low-lying C(s) rotamer, have been measured to high precision up to 71 GHz, allowing accurate spectroscopic parameters to be derived for both isomers. HOSOH may play a role in atmospheric and interstellar chemistry, and the present work provides the essential data to enable remote sensing and/or radioastronomical searches for these species. Spectroscopic characterization of HOSOH suggests that other transient intermediates in the oxidation of SO2 to H2SO4 may be amenable to laboratory detection as well.

Ion-molecule reactions are thought to play a crucial role in the formation of metastable isomers, but relatively few protonated intermediates beyond HNCH(+) have been characterized at high spectral resolution. We present here laboratory measurements of the rotational spectra of protonated isocyanic acid in two isomeric forms, the ground state H2NCO(+) with C2v symmetry and a low-lying bent chain HNCOH(+), guided by coupled cluster calculations of their molecular structure. Somewhat surprisingly, HNCOH(+) is found to be more abundant than H2NCO(+), even though this metastable isomer is calculated to lie approximately 15-20 kcal/mol higher in energy. In the same way that HCNH(+) serves as a key intermediate in ion-molecule reactions that form HNC via dissociative electron recombination in cold dense interstellar molecular clouds, HNCOH(+) may play an analogous role in the conversion of HNCO to HOCN.

Silicon oxysulfide, OSiS, and seven of its minor isotopic species have been characterized for the first time in the gas phase at high spectral resolution by means of Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The equilibrium structure of OSiS has been determined from the experimental data using calculated vibration-rotation interaction constants. The structural parameters (rO-Si = 1.5064 Å and rSi-S = 1.9133 Å) are in very good agreement with values from high-level quantum chemical calculations using coupled-cluster techniques together with sophisticated additivity and extrapolation schemes. The bond distances in OSiS are very short in comparison with those in SiO and SiS. This unexpected finding is explained by the partial charges calculated for OSiS via a natural population analysis. The results suggest that electrostatic effects rather than multiple bonding are the key factors in determining bonding in this triatomic molecule. The data presented provide the spectroscopic information needed for radio astronomical searches for OSiS.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are hybrid organic-inorganic microporous materials that exhibit zeolite-like structures and can be synthesized with a wide range of pore sizes and chemical functionality. ZIFs as thin films and membranes are of interest for their applications in sensors and gas separation. Here, we report a method for ZIF film and membrane fabrication, based on support surface modification and in situ solvothermal growth, which has potential for general application to other ZIF membranes. Our simple surface modification method results in strong covalent bonds between α-Al(2)O(3) supports and imidazolate ligands, which promote the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of ZIF crystals. The microstructure of ZIF-8 films can be controlled by controlling the pH of the growth solution. ZIF-7 films were fabricated to demonstrate the potential for general applicability of our method. Finally, the separation performance of several ZIF-8 membranes was evaluated, revealing molecular sieving behavior with an ideal selectivity for H(2)/CH(4) of 13.
