The kinetics of UV radiation-induced fast collapse and recovery in thermally cycled and rehydrated light- and thermo- double-responsive copolymer films of poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate- co -6-(4-phenylazophenoxy)hexyl acrylate), abbreviated as P(OEGMA 300 - co -PAHA), are probed by in situ neutron reflectivity (NR). The copolymer film is exposed to a thermal treatment starting at a temperature of 60 °C, which is well above its transition temperature (TT = 53 °C) before the temperature is rapidly decreased from 60 to 23 °C. Based on the applied protocol, the initially collapsed P(OEGMA 300 - co -PAHA) film is rehydrated due to the switching of polymer chains from a more hydrophobic to a more hydrophilic state when the temperature falls below its TT. The whole rehydration process can be divided into 3 stages: D 2 O absorption, chain rearrangement, and film reswelling. After rehydration, the thermally cycled P(OEGMA 300 - co -PAHA) film is switched by UV irradiation via setting the UV radiation on and off. Considering the UV-induced collapse and recovery, both processes are slower than those observed in freshly hydrated films without any thermal stimulus history. Therefore, the experienced thermal history of the film should be considered in the design of sensors and detectors based on double-responsive copolymer films.

The water swelling and subsequent solvent exchange including co-nonsolvency behavior of thin films of a doubly thermo-responsive diblock copolymer (DBC) are studied via spectral reflectance, time-of-flight neutron reflectometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The DBC consists of a thermo-responsive zwitterionic (poly(4-((3-methacrylamidopropyl) dimethylammonio) butane-1-sulfonate)) (PSBP) block, featuring an upper critical solution temperature transition in aqueous media but being insoluble in acetone, and a nonionic poly( N -isopropylmethacrylamide) (PNIPMAM) block, featuring a lower critical solution temperature transition in water, while being soluble in acetone. Homogeneous DBC films of 50-100 nm thickness are first swollen in saturated water vapor (H 2 O or D 2 O), before they are subjected to a contraction process by exposure to mixed saturated water/acetone vapor (H 2 O or D 2 O/acetone-d6 = 9:1 v/v). The affinity of the DBC film toward H 2 O is stronger than for D 2 O, as inferred from the higher film thickness in the swollen state and the higher absorbed water content, thus revealing a pronounced isotope sensitivity. During the co-solvent-induced switching by mixed water/acetone vapor, a two-step film contraction is observed, which is attributed to the delayed expulsion of water molecules and uptake of acetone molecules. The swelling kinetics are compared for both mixed vapors (H 2 O/acetone-d6 and D 2 O/acetone-d6) and with those of the related homopolymer films. Moreover, the concomitant variations of the local environment around the hydrophilic groups located in the PSBP and PNIPMAM blocks are followed. The first contraction step turns out to be dominated by the behavior of the PSBP block, whereas the second one is dominated by the PNIPMAM block. The unusual swelling and contraction behavior of the latter block is attributed to its co-nonsolvency behavior. Furthermore, we observe cooperative hydration effects in the DBC films, that is, both polymer blocks influence each other's solvation behavior.

The water vapor-induced swelling, as well as subsequent phase-transition kinetics, of thin films of a diblock copolymer (DBC) loaded with different amounts of the salt NaBr, is investigated in situ. In dilute aqueous solution, the DBC features an orthogonally thermoresponsive behavior. It consists of a zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine) block, namely, poly(4-( N -(3'-methacrylamidopropyl)- N , N -dimethylammonio) butane-1-sulfonate) (PSBP), showing an upper critical solution temperature, and a nonionic block, namely, poly( N -isopropylmethacrylamide) (PNIPMAM), exhibiting a lower critical solution temperature. The swelling kinetics in D 2 O vapor at 15 °C and the phase transition kinetics upon heating the swollen film to 60 °C and cooling back to 15 °C are followed with simultaneous time-of-flight neutron reflectometry and spectral reflectance measurements. These are complemented by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The collapse temperature of PNIPMAM and the swelling temperature of PSBP are found at lower temperatures than in aqueous solution, which is attributed to the high polymer concentration in the thin-film geometry. Upon inclusion of sub-stoichiometric amounts (relative to the monomer units) of NaBr in the films, the water incorporation is significantly increased. This increase is mainly attributed to a salting-in effect on the zwitterionic PSBP block. Whereas the addition of NaBr notably shifts the swelling temperature of PSBP to lower temperatures, the collapse temperature of PNIPMAM remains unaffected by the presence of salt in the films.

Spray deposition is a scalable and cost-effective technique for the fabrication of magnetic hybrid films containing diblock copolymers (DBCs) and magnetic nanoparticles. However, it is challenging to obtain spray-deposited anisotropic magnetic hybrid films without using external magnetic fields. In the present work, spray deposition is applied to prepare perpendicular anisotropic magnetic hybrid films by controlling the orientation of strontium hexaferrite nanoplatelets inside ultra-high-molecular-weight DBC polystyrene- block -poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS- b -PMMA) films. During spray deposition, the evolution of DBC morphology and the orientation of magnetic nanoplatelets are monitored with in situ grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). For reference, a pure DBC film without nanoplatelets is deposited with the same conditions. Solvent-controlled magnetic properties of the hybrid film are proven with solvent vapor annealing (SVA) applied to the final deposited magnetic films. Obvious changes in the DBC morphology and nanoplatelet localization are observed during SVA. The superconducting quantum interference device data show that ferromagnetic hybrid polymer films with high coercivity can be achieved via spray deposition. The hybrid films show a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy before SVA, which is strongly weakened after SVA. The spray-deposited hybrid films appear highly promising for potential applications in magnetic data storage and sensors.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been developed as a promising photovoltaic technology because of their excellent photovoltaic performance. However, interfacial recombination and charge carrier transport losses at the surface greatly limit the performance and stability of PSCs. In this work, the fabrication of high-quality PSCs based on methylammonium lead iodide with excellent ambient stability is reported. An anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), is introduced to simultaneously passivate the defect states and stabilize the cubic phase of the perovskite film. The SDBS located at grain boundaries and the surface of the active layer can effectively passivate under-coordinated lead ions and protect the perovskite components from water-induced degradation. As a result, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.42% is achieved with an open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) of 1.12 V, a short-circuit current ( J SC ) of 23.23 mA cm -2 , and a fill factor (FF) of 74% in combination with superior moisture stability. The SDBS-passivated devices retain 80% of their initial average PCE after 2112 h of storage under ambient conditions.

Nanostructured Ge is considered a highly promising material for Li-ion battery applications as Ge offers high specific capacity and Li-ion diffusivity, while inherent mesoporous nanostructures can contribute resistance against capacity fading as typically induced by high volume expansion in bulk Ge films. Mesoporous GeO x /Ge/C films are synthesized using K 4 Ge 9 Zintl clusters as a Ge precursor and the amphiphilic diblock copolymer polystyrene- block -polyethylene oxide as a templating tool. As compared to a reference sample without post-treatment, enhanced surface-to-volume ratios are achieved through post-treatment with a poor-good azeotrope solvent mixture. High capacities of over 2000 mA h g -1 are obtained with good stability over 300 cycles. Information from morphological and compositional characterization for both reference and post-treated sample suggests that the good electrochemical performance originates from reversible GeO 2 conversion reactions.

For PbS quantum dot (QD)-based optoelectronic devices, gold is the most frequently used electrode material. In most device architectures, gold is in direct contact with the QD solid. To better understand the formation of the interface between gold and a close-packed QD layer at an early stage, in situ grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering is used to observe the gold sputter deposition on a 1,2-ethanedithiol (EDT)-treated PbS QD solid. In the kinetics of gold layer growth, the forming and merging of small gold clusters (radius less than 1.6 nm) are observed at the early stages. The thereby formed medium gold clusters (radius between 1.9-2.4 nm) are influenced by the QDs' templating effect. Furthermore, simulations suggest that the medium gold clusters grow preferably along the QDs' boundaries rather than as a top coating of the QDs. When the thickness of the sputtered gold layer reaches 6.25 nm, larger gold clusters with a radius of 5.3 nm form. Simultaneously, a percolation layer with a thickness of 2.5 nm is established underneath the gold clusters. This fundamental understanding of the QD-gold interface formation will help to control the implementation of sputtered gold electrodes on close-packed QD solids in device manufacturing processes.

The orientation of block copolymer (BCP) features in thin films can be obtained by spin-coating a BCP solution on a substrate surface functionalized by a polymer brush layer of the appropriate random copolymer (RCP). Although this approach is well established, little work reporting the amount and distribution of residual solvent in the polymer film after the spin-coating process is available. Moreover, no information can be found on the effect of trapped solvent on the interface between the BCP film and RCP brush. In this work, systems consisting of poly(styrene)- b -poly(methyl methacrylate) thin films deposited on poly(styrene- r -methyl methacrylate) brush layers are investigated by combining neutron reflectivity (NR) experiments with simulation techniques. An increase in the amount of trapped solvent is observed by NR as the BCP film thickness increases accompanied by a significant decrease of the interpenetration length between the BCP and RCP, thus suggesting that the interpenetration between grafted chains and block copolymer chains is hampered by the solvent. Hybrid particle-field molecular dynamics simulations of the analyzed system confirm the experimental observations and demonstrate a clear correlation between the interpenetration length and the amount of trapped solvent.

The development of diblock copolymer (DBC) nanocomposite films containing magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters ( D ) over 20 nm is a challenging task. To host large iron oxide NPs (Fe 3 O 4 , D = 27 ± 0.6 nm), an ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) linear DBC polystyrene- block -poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS- b -PMMA) is used as a template in the present work. Due to hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid ligands of the NPs and the ester groups in PMMA, the NPs show an affinity to the PMMA block. The localization of the NPs inside the DBC is investigated as a function of the NP concentration. At low NP concentrations, NPs are located preferentially at the interface between PS and PMMA domains to minimize the interfacial tension caused by the strong segregation strength of the UHMW DBC. At high NP concentrations (≥10 wt %), chain-like NP aggregates (a head-to-tail orientation) are observed in the PMMA domains, resulting in a change of the morphology from sphere to ellipsoid for part of the PMMA domains. Magnetic properties of the hybrid films are probed via superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. All hybrid films show ferrimagnetism and are promising for potential applications in magnetic data storage.

The investigation of the response kinetics of smart colloidal microgel films is crucial for their optimization to enable advanced applications. We study the classical thermoresponsive microgel model system N -isopropylacrylamide cross-linked with N , N '-methylenebisacrylamide. Without the typically used polyelectrolyte coating of the substrate, thin microgel films are prepared in a single spin-coating step. Atomic force microscopy measurements reveal an extremely dense packing, resulting in a homogeneous compact thin film of microgel particles. The hydration kinetics of these films in H 2 O and D 2 O atmospheres as well as the kinetics of the solvent exchange between both water species are investigated with in situ time-of-flight neutron reflectometry (TOF-NR) and in situ Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. With accounting for a nonconstant humid atmosphere, the intrinsic diffusion dynamics of water molecules into the thin microgel film are modeled and the specific time constant τ and the effective Flory-Huggins interaction parameter χ eff are determined. Comparing the results in H 2 O and D 2 O atmospheres, TOF-NR and FTIR spectroscopy results show an increased affinity of the microgel films toward H 2 O as compared to D 2 O. From the FTIR spectroscopy data, we further identify different kinetics of intermolecular processes and order them according to their temporal evolution.

Tailoring the optical and electronic properties of nanostructured polymer-metal composites demonstrates great potential for efficient fabrication of modern organic optical and electronic devices such as flexible sensors, transistors, diodes, or photovoltaics. Self-assembled polymer-metal nanocomposites offer an excellent perspective for creating hierarchical nanostructures on macroscopic scales by simple bottom-up processes. We investigate the growth processes of nanogranular silver (Ag) layers on diblock copolymer thin film templates during sputter deposition. The Ag growth is strongly driven by self-assembly and selective wetting on the lamella structure of polystyrene- block -poly(methyl methacrylate). We correlate the emerging nanoscale morphologies with collective optical and electronic properties and quantify the difference in Ag growth on the corresponding homopolymer thin films. Thus, we are able to determine the influence of the respective polymer template and observe substrate effects on the Ag cluster percolation threshold, which affects the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT). Optical spectroscopy in the UV-vis regime reveals localized surface plasmon resonance for the metal-polymer composite. Their maximum absorption is observed around the IMT due to the subsequent long-range electron conduction in percolated nanogranular Ag layers. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, we identify the oxidation of Ag at the acrylate side chains as an essential influencing factor driving the selective wetting behavior in the early growth stages. The results of polymer-templated cluster growth are corroborated by atomic force microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy.

The ligand exchange process is a key step in fabrications of quantum dot (QD) optoelectronic devices. In this work, on the basis of grazing incidence X-ray scattering techniques, we find that the ligand exchange process with halide ions changes the PbS QD superlattice from face-centered-cubic to body-centered-cubic stacking, while the QD crystal lattice orientation also changes from preferentially "edge-up" to "corner-up". Thus, the QDs' shape is supposed to be the main factor for the alignment of QDs in close packed solids. Moreover, we tailor the alignment of the close packed solids by thermal treatments and further investigate their inner charge carrier dynamics by pump-probe transient absorption experiments. An overall better structure alignment optimizes the charge carrier hopping rate, as confirmed by the time dependence of the photon bleaching peak shift. The QD solid treated at 100 °C shows the best inner structure alignment with the best charge carrier hopping rate.

Hybrid films of zinc oxide (ZnO) and poly(3-hexylthiophen-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) show promising characteristics for application in hybrid bulk-heterojunction solar cells (HBSCs). However, the incompatibility of ZnO and P3HT may lead to a reduced interface area, thus reducing the probability of exciton separation and consequently lowering solar cell efficiencies. Here, a diblock copolymer P3HT- b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is introduced to improve the interface between ZnO and P3HT. ZnO is synthesized via a block copolymer assisted sol-gel approach, and the used zinc precursor is directly incorporated into the PEO blocks. Thus, the possibility of aggregation is reduced for both the inorganic and the organic components, and a good intermixing is ascertained. Two deposition methods, namely, spray and spin coating, are compared with respect to the resulting film structure, which is investigated with scanning electron microscopy and time-of-flight grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scattering measurements. Both the surface and inner morphologies reveal that the spin coated samples possess smaller and less diverse domain sizes than the sprayed films. Due to the advantage of spray coating in large-scale production, the morphology of the sprayed samples is tailored more meticulously by changing the weight fraction of ZnO in the films. The sprayed hybrid films show smaller domains and less aggregation with decreasing the amount of ZnO. This reveals that both the deposition method and composition of the ZnO/P3HT/P3HT- b-PEO hybrid films play an important role for tailoring the film morphology and thus for improving the performance of HBSCs in future application.

Polymer electrodes made of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) are used in many applications but are also sensitive to humidity. We study humidity-induced changes of PEDOT:PSS electrodes as monitored with in situ time-of-flight neutron reflectivity (TOF-NR) measurements under high humidity conditions. The influence of the solvent additive Zonyl and a post-treatment of PEDOT:PSS films with ethylene glycol (EG) serving as electrodes are analyzed with respect to the swelling ratio and water uptake. Depending on the applied PEDOT:PSS treatment, PEDOT and PSS enrichment layers are clearly identified with TOF-NR at the substrate-polymer and polymer-air interface, respectively. The additive Zonyl reduces the water uptake and limits film swelling. EG post-treatment further increases hydrophobicity and thereby water incorporation into the PEDOT:PSS film is strongly suppressed. The characteristic time constants and effective interaction parameters extracted from the kinetic NR data show that additive and post-treatment reduce the sensitivity of the PEDOT:PSS electrodes to humidity.

Enzyme-catalyzed controlled radical polymerization represents a powerful approach for the polymerization of a wide variety of water-soluble monomers. However, in such an enzyme-based polymerization system, the macromolecular catalyst (i.e., enzyme) has to be separated from the polymer product. Here, we present a compelling approach for the separation of the two macromolecular species, by taking the catalyst out of the molecular domain and locating it in the colloidal domain, ensuring quasi-homogeneous catalysis as well as easy separation of precious biocatalysts. We report on gold nanoparticles coated with horseradish peroxidase that can catalyze the polymerization of various monomers (e.g., N -isopropylacrylamide), yielding thermoresponsive polymers. Strikingly, these biocatalyst-coated nanoparticles can be recovered completely and reused in more than three independent polymerization cycles, without significant loss of their catalytic activity., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.
