Inspired by information processing in biological systems, sensor-combined edge-computing systems attract attention requesting artificial sensory neurons as essential ingredients. Here, we introduce a simple and versatile structure of artificial sensory neurons based on a novel three-terminal Ovonic threshold switch (3T-OTS), which features an electrically controllable threshold voltage ( V th ). Combined with a sensor driving an output voltage, this 3T-OTS generates spikes with a frequency depending on an external stimulus. As a proof of concept, we have built an artificial retinal ganglion cell (RGC) by combining a 3T-OTS and a photodiode. Furthermore, this artificial RGC is combined with the reservoir-computing technique to perform a classification of chest X-ray images for normal, viral pneumonia, and COVID-19 infections, releasing the recognition accuracy of about 86.5%. These results indicate that the 3T-OTS is highly promising for applications in neuromorphic sensory systems, providing a building block for energy-efficient in-sensor computing devices.

The strong peristaltic contraction of the stomach facilitates mixing and emptying of ingested food, which occurs rhythmically at approximately 3 cycles/min (cpm) in humans. Generally, most patients with gastroparesis show gastric electrical dysrhythmia that is disrupted electrical signals controlling gastric contractions. For treatment of gastric electrical dysrhythmia, in vivo electrical impulses to the stomach via an implanted gastric stimulator have been known to restore these gastric deformations. Nevertheless, improved sensors to monitor gastric contractions are still needed in current gastric stimulators. Recently, we have developed a new technology converting mechanical motion to electrical energy by using stretch-induced capacitance changes of a coiled carbon-nanotube (CNT) yarn. For its potential use as a gastric deformation sensor, the performance of a coiled CNT yarn was evaluated in several biological fluids. For a sinusoidal stretch to 30%, the peak-to-peak open-circuit voltage (OCV) was consistently generated at frequencies below 0.1 Hz. This sinusoidal variation in OCV augmented as the strain increased from 10 to 30%. In an in vitro artificial gastric system, the OCV was approximately linearly proportional to the balloon volume, which can monitor periodic deformations of the balloon at 2, 3, and 4 cpm as shown for human gastric deformations. Moreover, stretchy coiled yarns generate the peak electrical voltage and power when deformed. The present study shows that a self-powered CNT yarn sensor can not only monitor the changes in frequency and amplitude of volumetric change but also generate electrical power by periodic deformations of the balloon. Therefore, it seems possible to automatically deliver accurate electrical impulses according to real-time evaluation of a patient's gastric deformation based on information on the frequency, amplitude, and rate of the OCV from CNT yarn.

Graphene-based actuators are of practical interest because of their relatively low cost compared with other nanocarbon materials, such as carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate the simple fabrication of graphene oxide (GO)-based fibers with an infiltrated nylon-6,6 polymer by wet spinning. These fibers could be twisted to form torsional actuators and further coiled to form tensile actuators. By controlling the relative twisting and coiling direction of the GO/nylon fiber, we were able to realize reversible contraction or elongation actuation with strokes as high as -80 and 75%, respectively, when the samples were heated to 200 °C. The tensile actuation showed a remarkably little hysteresis. Moreover, this GO/nylon actuator could lift loads over 100 times heavier than itself and generate a stable actuation at high temperatures over the melting point of the polymer. This novel kind of GO-based actuator, which has a multidirectional actuation, has potential for a wide range of applications such as artificial muscles, robotics, and temperature sensing.

Twistable and stretchable fiber-based electrochemical devices having high performance are needed for future applications, including emerging wearable electronics. Weavable fiber redox supercapacitors and strain sensors are here introduced, which comprise a dielectric layer sandwiched between functionalized buckled carbon nanotube electrodes. On the macroscopic scale, the sandwiched core rubber of the fiber acts as a dielectric layer for capacitive strain sensing and as an elastomeric substrate that prevents electrical shorting and irreversible structural changes during severe mechanical deformations. On the microscopic scale, the buckled CNT electrodes effectively absorb tensile or shear stresses, providing an essentially constant electrical conductance. Consequently, the sandwich fibers provide the dual functions of (1) strain sensing, by generating approximately 115.7% and 26% capacitance changes during stretching (200%) and giant twist (1700 rad·m -1 or 270 turns·m -1 ), respectively, and (2) electrochemical energy storage, providing high linear and areal capacitances (2.38 mF·cm -1 and 11.88 mF·cm -2 ) and retention of more than 95% of initial energy storage capability under large mechanical deformations.

Thermophones are highly promising for applications such as high-power SONAR arrays, flexible loudspeakers, and noise cancellation devices. So far, freestanding carbon nanotube aerogel sheets provide the most attractive performance as a thermoacoustic heat source. However, the limited accessibility of large-size freestanding carbon nanotube aerogel sheets and other even more exotic materials recently investigated hampers the field. We describe alternative materials for a thermoacoustic heat source with high-energy conversion efficiency, additional functionalities, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective production technologies. We discuss the thermoacoustic performance of alternative nanostructured materials and compare their spectral and power dependencies of sound pressure in air. We demonstrate that the heat capacity of aerogel-like nanostructures can be extracted by a thorough analysis of the sound pressure spectra. The study presented here focuses on engineering thermal gradients in the vicinity of nanostructures and subsequent heat dissipation processes from the interior of encapsulated thermoacoustic projectors. Applications of thermoacoustic projectors for high-power SONAR arrays, sound cancellation, and optimal thermal design, regarding enhanced energy conversion efficiency, are discussed.

We report electrochemically powered, all-solid-state torsional and tensile artificial yarn muscles using a spinnable carbon nanotube (CNT) sheet that provides attractive performance. Large torsional muscle stroke (53°/mm) with minor hysteresis loop was obtained for a low applied voltage (5 V) without the use of a relatively complex three-electrode electromechanical setup, liquid electrolyte, or packaging. Useful tensile muscle strokes were obtained (1.3% at 2.5 V and 0.52% at 1 V) when lifting loads that are ∼25 times heavier than can be lifted by the same diameter human skeletal muscle. Also, the tensile actuator maintained its contraction following charging and subsequent disconnection from the power supply because of its own supercapacitor property at the same time. Possible eventual applications for the individual tensile and torsional muscles are in micromechanical devices, such as for controlling valves and stirring liquids in microfluidic circuits, and in medical catheters.

We report mechanically robust, electrically conductive, free-standing, and transparent hybrid nanomembranes made of densified carbon nanotube sheets that were coated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) using vapor phase polymerization and their performance as supercapacitors. The hybrid nanomembranes with thickness of ~66 nm and low areal density of ~15 μg/cm(2)exhibited high mechanical strength and modulus of 135 MPa and 12.6 GPa, respectively. They also had remarkable shape recovery ability in liquid and at the liquid/air interface unlike previous carbon nanotube sheets. The hybrid nanomembrane attached on a current collector had volumetric capacitance of ~40 F/cm(3) at 100 V s(-1) (~40 and ~80 times larger than that of onion-like carbon measured at 100 V s(-1) and activated carbon measured at 20 V s(-1), respectively), and it showed rectangular shapes of cyclic voltammograms up to ~5 V s(-1). High mechanical strength and flexibility of the hybrid nanomembrane enabled twisting it into microsupercapacitor yarns with diameters of ~30 μm. The yarn supercapacitor showed stable cycling performance without a metal current collector, and its capacitance decrease was only ~6% after 5000 cycles. Volumetric energy and power density of the hybrid nanomembrane was ~70 mWh cm(-3) and ~7910 W cm(-3), and the yarn possessed the energy and power density of ~47 mWh cm(-3) and ~538 W cm(-3)., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

The structural effects of fullerene on i-motif DNA were investigated by characterizing the structures of fullerene-free and fullerene-bound i-motif DNA, in the presence of cDNA and in solutions of varying pH, using circular dichroism and synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering. To facilitate a direct structural comparison between the i-motif and duplex structures in response to pH stimulus, we developed atomic scale structural models for the duplex and i-motif DNA structures, and for the C(60)/i-motif DNA hybrid associated with the cDNA strand, assuming that the DNA strands are present in an ideal right-handed helical conformation. We found that fullerene shifted the pH-induced conformational transition between the i-motif and the duplex structure, possibly due to the hydrophobic interactions between the terminal fullerenes and between the terminal fullerenes and an internal TAA loop in the DNA strand. The hybrid structure showed a dramatic reduction in cyclic hysteresis.

We have fabricated biocompatible nanofiber hydrogels with diverse sizes of ferritin clusters according to the mixing temperature of solutions employing electrospinning. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was used as a polymeric matrix for fabricating nanocomposites. By thermal means we controlled the interaction between the host PVA hydrogel and the protein shell on ferritin bionanoparticles to vary the size and concentration of ferritin clusters. The clustering of ferritin was based on the partial unfolding of a protein shell of ferritin. By studying the magnetic properties of the PVA/ferritin nanofibers according to the mixing temperature of the PVA/ferritin solutions, we confirmed that the clustering process of the ferritin was related to changes in the superparamagnetic properties and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast of the PVA/ferritin nanofibers. PVA/ferritin nanofiber hydrogels with diverse spatial distributions of ferritin nanoparticles are applicable as MRI-based noninvasive detectable cell culture scaffolds and as artificial muscles because of their improved superparamagnetic properties.

A reversible and robust electrochemical pH oscillator was achieved using an ethyl viologen/ionic liquid (IL) aqueous solution under an applied redox potential in a batch reactor, where the IL incorporated into the pH oscillator increased the stability of the pH oscillation by acting as an electron buffer solution.

The swelling behavior of chitosan hydrogels in ionic liquid-water binary systems was studied using hydrophilic room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) to elucidate the swelling mechanism of chitosan hydrogels. No penetration of RTIL into a dry chitosan material was observed. Swelling was achieved by soaking in water-RTIL binary mixtures, with larger swelling observed at higher water contents. In one instance, the binary mixture was acidic and produced larger than expected swelling due to the dissociation of the amine groups in the chitosan. The equilibrium binary system content behavior of the chitosan hydrogels depended upon the amount of free water, which is a measure of the number of water molecules that do not interact with the ionic liquid. After evaporation of water, remnant RTIL remained in the chitosan network and hardness testing indicated a plasticization effect, suggesting that the RTIL molecularly mixed with the chitosan. Chitosan hydrogels containing only RTIL were prepared by dropping pure RTIL onto a fully preswollen hydrogel followed by water evaporation. This method may be a useful means for preparing air-stable swollen chitosan gels.
