In this study, photonic balls─spherical aggregates of submicrometer-sized silica particles with uniform particle size─were investigated as structural colored materials. The structural color of these photonic balls is influenced by the ordered arrangement of the silica particles. The research focused on how the addition of electrolytes, specifically NaCl, affects the formation of photonic balls to achieve the desired structural color. Without NaCl, the photonic balls formed onion-shaped colloidal crystals. At NaCl concentrations above 0.006 mol/L, the particles aggregated into short-range ordered structures. When the concentration exceeded 0.05 mol/L, the aggregates lost their spherical shape. The study also explored the addition of carbon black (CB), a water-dispersible material due to its surface charge. The findings revealed that NaCl induced the phase separation between the charged silica particles and CB, resulting in Janus-shaped photonic balls─one side exhibiting structural color and the other side appearing black due to the presence of CB. Changing the silica particle size altered the hues of these Janus-shaped photonic balls, though they appeared uniformly colored to the naked eye. While this study did not specifically examine the applications of Janus-shaped photonic balls composed of silica particles and CB, CB is known for its ability to absorb near-infrared radiation and convert it into heat as well as its conductive properties. Silica, on the other hand, has a low thermal conductivity and acts as an electrical insulator. The structurally colored Janus-shaped photonic balls created in this study may serve as pigments in applications requiring anisotropic heat generation and electrical conduction. Additionally, the study's findings suggest the potential for creating various types of Janus-shaped photonic balls from materials with differing densities.

This study affords mechanistic insights into the formation mechanism of carbodiimide ions (NCN 2- ) from urea during the synthesis of La 2 O 2 NCN by employing the "proanion" strategy without using NH 3 gas. It is a safer, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly approach. Urea, acting as a proanion, decomposes upon heating, facilitating conversion to NCN 2- . This work meticulously examines the phase transitions and identifies intermediate species formed during the reaction using in situ X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis-mass spectrometry. The findings present a detailed mechanism in which urea initially decomposes at 140 °C, releasing HNCO, which reacts with La(OH) 3 to immobilize NCO - species on the surface of La(OH) 3 . As the temperature reaches approximately 400 °C, these NCO - anions transform into NCN 2- anions by releasing CO 2 gas, resulting in the formation of an amorphous phase rich in NCN 2- . Following further heating to 600 °C, La 2 O 2 NCN crystallizes, enhancing its crystallinity as the temperature increases. These findings elucidate the formation mechanism of La 2 O 2 NCN, introduce the "proanion method" for the alternative synthesis of metal (oxy)carbodiimides, and expand their potential for applications as functional materials.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) exhibit diverse chemical compositions and are being designed for promising applications such as CO 2 adsorbents. Although many researchers have analyzed CO 2 gas evolution and structural transformation behavior at elevated temperatures, there are still inconsistencies in results on the effect of different metal ions in LDHs. In this study, on the basis of atomic/molecular-level findings from our previous study on multistep structural/chemical transformation of Mg-Al LDHs, we analyzed the quantitative gas evolution behavior and structural transformations of M -Al-CO 3 LDHs with different divalent metal ions ( M = Mg, Zn, or Co, M /Al = 2) at elevated temperatures. Our quantitative analysis revealed that all three LDH samples undergo the three-step chemical transformations: release of interlayer water, partial dehydroxylation of the hydroxyl layers, and complete dehydroxylation of layers and decomposition of interlayer CO 3 2- . However, the temperature range for each step differs, as do the structural transformations for each sample: the layered structure collapses in the first step for Zn-Al LDH and Co-Al LDH, and the third step for Mg-Al LDH. Our results provide for quantitative and concrete understanding of the effect of divalent metal ions in LDHs on thermal decomposition.

Aromatic amides bearing secondary amide bond exist in trans conformation both in the crystal and in solution, whereas the conformation of the N -methylated derivatives is cis in the crystal and predominantly cis in various solvents. The cis conformational preference of N -alkylated benzanilide provides access to aromatic foldamers such as oligo( N -alkyl- p -benzamide)s, which adopt dynamic helical structures. Here, the conformational properties of imidazole-substituted amide in the crystal and in solution were examined. Imidazole-substituted amides 2a and 4a existed mainly in the cis conformation in solution. The ratio of the cis conformer of N -methyl- N -(1-methyl-1 H -imidazol-4-yl)benzamide ( 4a ) was smaller than that of N ,1-dimethyl- N -phenyl-1 H -imidazole-2-carboxamide ( 2a ) or N -methylbenzanilide, but the introduction of a substituent strongly affected the conformer ratio. Compounds 6a and 7a bearing an electron-withdrawing group on the imidazole ring existed predominantly in trans form. On the other hand, the introduction of an electron-withdrawing group on the phenyl ring or a bulky substituent on the amide nitrogen of 4a increased the ratio of cis conformer. Further, the major conformer of N -alkylated N -imidazolylamides was switched from cis to trans by the addition of acid. These results suggest that imidazole-substituted amides might be applicable as conformational switches in aromatic foldamers to enable environment-dependent structural change.

Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with CO 3 2- interlayer anions are promising CO 2 adsorbents. Here, we analyzed the quantitative gas evolution behaviors of Mg-Al LDH particles with different Mg/Al ratios during the multistep chemical/structural transformations at elevated temperatures. The Mg/Al molar ratio strongly affects the behavior: the transformation changes from two apparent steps to three steps depending on the Mg/Al ratio. The transformation occurs in essentially the same way as that observed for large Mg-Al LDH crystals: (1) release of the interlayer water, (2) partial dehydroxylation of the hydroxyl layers followed by coordination of carbonate ions to the metals, and (3) collapse of the layered structure. We provide a molecular/atomic level picture of the structure in each step of the transformation by first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The structurally optimized model and reexamination of experimental data showed that step (1) results in a large decrease in the interlayer distance of the LDH from ∼7.6 to ∼6.7 Å (a decrease of ∼0.9 Å) and the possible explanation is the waving of the metal hydroxide layers. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the structural changes of LDHs with various Mg/Al ratios to resolve the various interpretations in the literature.

N , N '-Diarylsquaramide and N , N '-dialkylsquaramide are conformationally stable linkers with extended (trans, trans) and folded (cis, cis) structures, respectively, independently of external conditions. Here, we show that N -monomethylated N , N '-diarylsquaramides generally take a (trans, cis) structure in the crystal but show a solvent-dependent conformational equilibrium in solution. In particular, the stable conformer of N -methyl- N , N '-bis(1-naphthyl)squaramide ( 1f ) changes depending upon the solvent. Thus, aromatic N -monomethylated squaramides could find application as components of environment-responsive molecular switches.

A general procedure for synthesizing various inorganic compounds in a similar manner is required in the field of material chemistry. The use of solid-state reactive agents with inorganic precursors is a successful approach in this direction. In this study, organic-inorganic hybrid metal hydroxide salts (MHSs) were utilized to synthesize various inorganic compounds by a simple heat treatment method because they can be assumed to be "premixed" inorganic precursors and solid-state reactive agents. Comparative studies revealed that the nanocrystalline characteristics and coordination of the carboxylate of the synthesized MHSs enabled simultaneous dehydration of hydroxides and decomposition of carboxylates and subsequent formation of metals and metal sulfides. Manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, and zinc sulfides, as well as nickel carbides, pnictides, chalcogenides, and halides were obtained using the same procedure. We believe that using nanocrystalline organic-inorganic hybrid MHSs as both inorganic precursors and organic reactive agents will be a simple and versatile way to prepare a wide variety of inorganic complex compounds.

Radical cations show a unique reactivity that is fundamentally different from that of conventional cations and have thus attracted considerable attention as alternative cationic intermediates for novel types of organic reactions. However, asymmetric catalysis to promote enantioselective radical cation reactions remains a major challenge in contemporary organic synthesis. Here, we report that the judicious design of an ion pair consisting of a radical cation and a chiral counteranion induces an excellent level of enantioselectivity. This strategy was applied to enantio-, diastereo-, and regioselective [2 + 2] cycloadditions, as well as enantio-, diastereo-, and regioselective [4 + 2] cycloadditions, by using chiral iron(III) photoredox catalysis. We anticipate that this strategy has the potential to expand the use of several mature chiral anions to develop numerous unprecedented enantioselective radical cation reactions.

Understanding the catalytic mechanism of highly active two-dimensional electrocatalysts is crucial to their rational design. Herein, we reveal the element dependence of the reactivity of two-dimensional metal dichalcogenide sheets for electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction. We found that tin(IV) disulfide (SnS 2 ) and molybdenum(IV) disulfide (MoS 2 ) sheets exhibited Faradaic efficiencies of 63.3% and ∼0%, respectively, for formic acid. Scanning electrochemical cell microscopy and theoretical calculations were used to identify the catalytically active sites of SnS 2 as terraces and edges. Owing to the effective utilization of the entire surface area, SnS 2 can effectively accelerate catalytic reactions. This finding provides a direction for material research in two-dimensional electrocatalysts for energy-efficient chemical production from electrochemical CO 2 reduction, as well as for other energy devices.

The metal-free synthesis of phenols from diaryliodonium salts with water was developed by using N -benzylpyridin-2-one as an organocatalyst. In this process, sterically congested, functionalized, and heterocycle-containing iodonium salts were smoothly converted to the desired products, and the clofibrate and mecloqualone derivatives were also synthesized in high yields. In addition, the gram-scale experiment was successfully carried out with 10 mmol of a sterically congested substrate.

Structurally colored materials consisting of arrays of submicrometer-sized particles have drawn a great deal of attention because of their advantages, including low cost, low impact on human health as well as the environment, and resistance to fading. However, their low thermal stability is considered to be a critical issue for their practical use as colorants. Black-colored substances that can absorb the white color are added to colloidal array-type structurally colored materials to enhance their chromaticity. The poor thermal stability of commonly used black coloring additives, carbon black and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, is a main factor that reduces the heat resistance of structural coloration. Here, we demonstrate the preparation of structurally colored materials with extraordinarily high heat resistance of coloration, up to 900 °C. Several metal oxides, i.e., calcium manganese-based oxide (CCMO), chromium-iron-cobalt-nickel oxide (CFCNO), and lanthanum manganite (LMO), are synthesized and employed as black additives for structurally colored coatings prepared by the electrophoretic deposition of spherical silica particles. When CCMO is used as a black additive, the coloration heat resistance of the film is stable up to 700 °C. On the other hand, the films maintain vivid structural colors after exposure to 900 °C temperatures when CFCNO and LMO are employed as black additives. On the basis of this finding, high heat resistance of structural colors requires both heat resistance of the black additives and nonreactivity with the components of the spherical particles used for colloidal arrays.

Safe, low-cost structurally colored materials are alternative colorants to toxic inorganic pigments and organic dyes. Colloidal amorphous arrays are promising structurally colored materials because of their angle-independent colors. In this study, we focused on precise tuning of the chromaticity by preparing bilayer colloidal amorphous arrays through electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Systematic investigations with various EPD conditions clarified the contributions of each condition to the EPD process and the competing electrochemical reactions, which enabled us to prepare well-colored coatings. EPD films composed of colloidal amorphous array bilayers were successfully synthesized with controlled film thickness. Chromaticity of the films was found to be precisely controlled by the EPD duration. We believe that this understanding of the EPD process and its application to synthesis of structurally colored bilayer films will bring structurally colored materials closer to practical industrial use.

The use of precrystallized nanoparticles as nanobuilding blocks (NBBs) is a promising way to obtain mesoporous materials with crystalline walls. In this study, the size effects of both hydroxide NBBs and nonionic block copolymer (BCP) templates on the formation of ordered mesostructures are investigated. The diameter of layered nickel hydroxide NBBs was controlled at the sub-2 nm scale by an epoxide-mediated alkalinization process. Commercially available nonionic BCPs (gyration radii in the range of 11.9-43.9 Å) were used. Mesoperiodic structures were formed by the evaporation-induced self-assembly process. A proper size combination of hydroxide NBBs, smaller than 12.5 Å, and BCPs, larger than 19.9 Å, is shown to be necessary to form ordered mesostructures.

A facile method was successfully developed to prepare strontium-tantalum perovskite oxynitride, SrTaO 2 N, and its solid solutions. Urea was employed as a solid nitriding agent to eliminate the use of toxic NH 3 gas. In addition, utilization of sol-gel-derived Ta 2 O 5 gel as a Ta precursor allowed for completion of nitridation within a shorter period and at a lower calcination temperature compared with the conventional ammonolysis process. Optimization of the reaction conditions, such as the urea content, allowed for the production of solid solutions of SrTaO 2 N and Sr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 2.9 . The products exhibited optical absorption and chromatic colors because of the narrower band gaps of oxynitrides compared with those of oxides. The O/N ratios of the solid solutions were easily adjusted by varying the amount of urea in the mixture of precursors. As a result, the colors of the products ranged from yellow to brown. The nitridation process and products developed in this study are interesting environmentally benign alternatives to conventional inorganic pigments.

Oxaphosphacyclophanes, a bis(triphenylphosphine oxide) moiety linked by dioxypropane, dioxybutane, dioxypentane, and dioxyhexane, were synthesized from the reaction of bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide and dibromoalkanes. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and exploring intermolecular interactions by using the Hirshfeld surface revealed that the butylene-linked oxaphosphacyclophane ( 2 ) had a one-dimensional (1D) supramolecular structure via CH/π interactions between the terminal phenyl group of 2 and a phenylene group of the cavities. In the packing diagram of pentylene-linked oxaphosphacyclophane ( 3 ) with antiform, one macrocycle recognized two terminal phenyl groups to form a 1D supramolecular chain via π/π interactions. The syn-form of 3 was obtained by the recrystallization from toluene and CHCl 3 . In this crystal, a toluene molecule avoid construction of a 1D chain. The antiform of hexylene-linked oxaphosphacyclophane 4 was obtained by the recrystallization from cyclohexane and CHCl 3 . Cyclohexane was captured in the cavity via CH/π interactions. Structurally colored coatings composed of colloidal arrays of monodisperse spherical particles have attracted great attention owing to their versatile advantages, such as low cost, resistance to fading, and low impacts on the environment and human health. However, the weak mechanical stability is considered to be a major obstacle for their practical applications as colorants. Although several approaches based on the addition of polymer additives to enhance the adhesion of particles have been reported, the challenge remains to develop a strategy for the preparation of structurally colored coatings with extremely high robustness using a simple process. Here, we have developed a novel approach to fabricate robust structurally colored coatings by cathodic electrophoretic deposition. The addition of a metal salt, i.e., Mg(NO 3 ) 2 , to the coating dispersion allows SiO 2 particles to have a positive charge, which enables the electrophoresis of SiO 2 particles toward the cathode. At the cathode, Mg(OH) 2 codeposits with SiO 2 particles because OH - ions are generated by the decomposition of dissolved oxygen and NO 3 - ions. The mechanical stability of the colloidal arrays obtained by this process is remarkably improved because Mg(OH) 2 facilitates the adhesion of the particles and substrates. The brilliant structural color is maintained even after several cycles of the sandpaper abrasion test. We have also demonstrated the coating on a stainless steel fork. This demonstration reveals that our approach enables a homogeneous coating on a complicated surface. Furthermore, the high durability of the coating is clarified because the coating did not peel off even when the fork was stuck into a plastic eraser. Therefore, the coating technique developed here will provide an effective method for the pervasive application of the structural color as a colorant.

Various cells in vivo secrete exosomes consisting of lipid bilayers. They carry mRNAs and miRNAs capable of controlling cellular functions and can be used as drug delivery system nanocarriers. There is the current need to further improve the efficiency of exosome uptake into target cells. In this study, we prepared a hybrid of exosomes and magnetic nanoparticles, which could be guided to target cells by a magnetic field for efficient uptake. Magnetic nanogels were prepared and hybridized to fluorescently labeled exosomes isolated from PC12 cells. By applying a magnetic field to a hybrid with magnetic nanogel, exosomes were efficiently transferred into target cells as confirmed by confocal laser microscopy. Finally, we found that differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells to neuron-like cells was enhanced by magnetic induction of the exosome-magnetic nanogel hybrid, indicating maintenance of the intrinsic functions of the exosomes in the differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells.

An adamantane-based macrocycle possessing eight hydroxyl groups (1) was synthesized, in which the macrocyclic framework comprises two disubstituted adamantane molecules bearing phenyl derivatives connected to two biphenylene spacers by oxygen atoms. Furthermore, functionalized macrocycles containing methyl (2) and methoxycarbonylmethyl (3) groups were prepared. From the X-ray crystallographic analysis, the backbone of the macrocycles in all crystals had a nearly hexagonal shape with a cavity and these macrocycles could be arranged into different tubular structures dependent on the substituents. In acetone, macrocycle (1) formed stable hollow spherical aggregates with multilayer membranes. In contrast, macrocycle (3) exhibited no production of self-assembled materials in chloroform. The addition of hexane into the solution caused the generation of solid spheres and their fused network aggregates, which were finally transformed into crystals owing to the solvent effects.

A solid solution of GaN and ZnO (GaN:ZnO) is promising as a photocatalyst for visible-light-driven overall water splitting to produce H 2 . However, several obstacles still exist in the conventional preparation procedure of GaN:ZnO. For example, the atomic distributions of Zn and Ga are nonuniform in GaN:ZnO when a mixture of the metal oxides, i.e. Ga 2 O 3 and ZnO, is used as a precursor. In addition, GaN:ZnO is generally prepared under a harmful NH 3 flow for long durations at high temperatures. Here, a facile synthesis of GaN:ZnO with homogeneous atomic composition via a simple and safe procedure is reported. A layered double hydroxide (LDH) containing Zn 2+ and Ga 3+ was used to increase the uniformity of the atomic distributions of Zn and Ga in GaN:ZnO. We employed urea as a nitriding agent instead of gaseous NH 3 to increase the safety of the reaction. Through the optimization of reaction conditions such as heat treatment temperature and content of urea, single-phase GaN:ZnO was successfully obtained. In addition, the nitridation mechanism using urea was investigated in detail. NH 3 released from the thermal decomposition of urea did not directly nitride the LDH precursor. X-ray absorption and infrared  spectroscopies revealed that Zn(CN 2 )-like intermediate species were generated at the middle temperature range and Ga-N bonds formed at high temperature along with dissociation of CO and CO 2 .

The catalytic activity of zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ) nanocrystals for the reaction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) with methanol to form dimethylcarbonate (DMC) was investigated. ZrO 2 nanocrystals prepared by hydrothermal synthesis at various temperatures were compared. The size of the ZrO 2 nanocrystals monotonically increased with the hydrothermal temperature, according to specific surface area, transmission electron microscope measurements, and their X-ray diffraction peak widths. The ZrO 2 nanocrystals prepared by hydrothermal synthesis were found to exhibit high catalytic activity owing to their high surface area and catalytically active surfaces arising from their high crystallinity. Next, adsorbed species generated from CO 2 on the ZrO 2 surfaces were measured using CO 2 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and in situ FT-IR spectroscopy. The results confirmed the presence of several kinds of adsorbed species including bidentate bicarbonate (b-HCO 3 - ), bidentate carbonate (b-CO 3 2- ), and monodentate carbonate (m-CO 3 2- ). The relationship between the amounts of these surface species and the catalytic activity of the ZrO 2 was investigated for the first time. The amount of the bidentate species (b-HCO 3 - and b-CO 3 2- ) was found to correlate well with the catalytic activity, demonstrating that the surface sites that afford these species contribute to the catalytic activity for this reaction.

We recently reported on newly synthesized S-galactosyl oligo(Arg) conjugates to overcome the serious problem of the passage through the E. coli cell membrane. Following in vivo expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) induced by each of the S-galactosyl (Arg)n constructs (n = 5, 6, 8) at the T5 promoter in E. coli for 18 h, we visually observed that the cultures fluoresced green light when excited with UV light. The fluorescence intensities for these cultures were greater than that found for a control culture, indicating that the peptides had induced GFP expression. In order to accomplish higher expression efficiency, we investigated the cluster effect and structural fine-tuning of new poly(2-oxazoline) containing CysArgArg as the cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) and S-galactosides when acting as inducers of recombinant protein expression under the control of lac operator/repressor systems in this article. Quantitative fluorescence intensities (calculated per molecule) also supported the observations that the cell-penetrating glyco poly(2-oxazoline)s were better inducers of GFP expression than glyco poly(2-oxazoline) containing no CPP or isopropyl β-d-thiogalactoside. Because the level of GFP expression was directly related to the number of sugar residues in each glyco poly(2-oxazoline), we propose that a cluster effect of the S-galactosides attached to the cell-penetrating poly(2-oxazoline) is responsible for how well the galactosides inhibited the lac repressor to activate the protein expression under the control of the lac operator/repressor system. A similar tendency was observed when the T7 promoter was placed upstream of the gene for an artificial extracellular matrix protein and glyco poly(2-oxazoline)s-CPP conjugates were used as inducers. To assess how the glyco poly(2-oxazoline) penetrate the cell membrane, we labeled the glyco poly(2-oxazoline) using 1-amino pyrene and directly observed the penetration process. Furthermore, we could visualize protein expression under the control of a lac promoter/operator/repressor system using transmission electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray analysis mapping.

A calix[3]aramide has been synthesized bearing three triphenylphosphinic amide moieties, which formed intramolecular cyclic hydrogen bonds that suppressed its cone/partial cone inversion. The intramolecular cyclic hydrogen bonds were disrupted by DMSO, and the insertion of H2O into the hydrogen bonds triggered the spontaneous resolution of the calix[3]aramide. Within a chiral environment, such as that afforded by the presence of optically active 2-butanol, the calix[3]aramide underwent a symmetry breaking crystallization process.

Multilayered spiroborate nanocycles were prepared from tris- or tetrakis(dihydroxynaphthalene) and tetrahydroxyanthraquinone as pillar and crossbar units via the reversible formation of a spiroborate linkage. The four-layered spiroborate nanocycle recognized two cationic aromatic guests simultaneously and exhibited the ability to form a supramolecular one-dimensional array by combining with methyl viologen dimer as the ditopic guest.

Multicomponent construction of the tetrakis(spiroborate) anionic nanocycles was achieved by reacting bis(dihydroxynaphthalene)s with tetrahydroxyanthraquinone in the presence of boric acid in a self-organized manner. These nanocycles exhibited selective molecular recognition behavior toward cationic guests such as methyl viologen derivatives. Formation of a supramolecular ring@ring and a guest@ring@ring structure was observed by combining the anionic nanocycle and the vinylogous analog of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene).

Two adamantane-based oxacyclophanes were synthesized by the SNAr reaction of bis-phenol derivatives based on adamantane with 2,6-dichloropyrazine. Their crystal structures had distorted or twisted 1,3-alternate conformations. The oxacyclophanes indicated no formation of spherical aggregates in acetone. However, addition of water into the solution caused the generation of hollow spherical aggregates with a multilayer membrane. Over time, the hollow spheres were induced into fibrous and network assemblies, which were eventually transformed into single crystals.

The aza-Clasen rearrangement of N-aryl-2-vinylazetidines has been explored. N-Aryl-2-vinylazetidines were transformed to corresponding tetrahydrobenzazocines in good yields. Unexpectedly, the tetrahydrobenzazocine was unstable and readily isomerized to vinyltetrahydroquinoline in the presence of acid. The mechanism of this ring contraction was studied in detail.

Robust infrared (IR)-shielding coating films were prepared by dispersing indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles (NPs) in a silica matrix. Hydrophobized ITO NPs were synthesized via a liquid phase process. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption of the ITO NPs could be tuned by varying the concentration of Sn doping from 3 to 30 mol %. The shortest SPR wavelength and strongest SPR absorption were obtained for the ITO NPs doped with 10% Sn because they possessed the highest electron carrier density. Coating films composed of a continuous silica matrix homogeneously dispersed with ITO NPs were obtained using perhydropolysilazane (PHPS) as a precursor. PHPS was completely converted to silica by exposure to the vapor from aqueous ammonia at 50 °C. The prepared coating films can efficiently shield IR radiation even though they are more than 80% transparent in the visible range. The coating film with the greatest IR-shielding ability completely blocked IR light at wavelengths longer than 1400 nm. The pencil hardness of this coating film was 9H at a load of 750 g, which is sufficiently robust for applications such as automotive glass.

Trifluoroacetic anhydride-mediated tandem trifluoroacetylation/cyclization of cyanoacetanilides proceeded efficiently under mild conditions to give 4-hydroxy-3-trifluoroacetylquinolin-2(1H)-ones in good yields. Isolation and direct observation of the reaction intermediates revealed that alpha-trifluoroacetylation resulted in the shortening of C[triple bond]N bonds and that the electron density of CN groups was high. A plausible reaction mechanism based on the results is also described.

Magnetoresponsive smart capsules formed with polyelectrolytes, lipid bilayers and magnetic nanoparticles were fabricated by a colloid-templating technique. Melamine-formaldehyde core particles with polyelectrolyte multilayer shell were prepared by layer-by-layer assembly. Magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) nanoparticles were selectively deposited on the capsular surface by aqueous solution deposition using Pd catalysts. Hollow capsules were obtained by the removal of the melamine formaldehyde core particles. Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurement of the capsules revealed the ferromagnetic behavior of deposited Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles. Alternating magnetic field irradiation generates heat in the capsular dispersion. Additional lipid bilayer coating was carried out on the obtained hollow capsules. Dye molecules were loaded by exploiting the temperature-dependence of the lipid membrane permeability. An encapsulated dye was released on-demand by irradiation with an alternating magnetic field, due to a phase transition in the lipid membrane, induced by heating of the magnetic nanoparticles. The magnetically induced release is attributed to the phase transition of the lipid membrane, caused by heat of Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles under magnetic stimuli, and not to rupture of the capsules.

The crystal structures and dynamic behavior in solution of aromatic amides containing terphenyl groups were revealed by X-ray crystallographic analysis and VT-NMR measurements. Controlling the synthetic yield and molecular shape of the macrocycles with intramolecular aromatic-aromatic interactions was successfully achieved. N,N'-Diethyl-N,N'-diterphenyl-1,3-benzenedicarboxamide (2) exists in the syn conformation and two terphenyl groups are on the same side of the plane of the central benzene ring due to attractive aromatic-aromatic interactions between the two terphenyl moieties. The yield of the macrocyclization reaction of 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid with bis(ethylamino)terphenyl (4) was relatively high (55% yield) because an intermediate in the macrocyclization reaction was preorganized in the syn conformation, which is similar to the diamide 2. On the other hand, N,N'-diethyl-N,N'-diterphenyl-1,4-benzenedicarboxamide (3) exists in the anti conformation and two terphenyl groups are positioned on opposite sides of the plane of the central benzene ring. In contrast to the 1,3-derivative, the yield of the macrocyclization reaction of the 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid with the diamine 4 was low (19% yield). Although macrocycle 5 exists in a planar conformation in the crystal and in solution, macrocycle 6 exists in a twisted conformation. A deformation of the twist was induced by a tilted T-shaped aromatic-aromatic interaction between the central phenylene rings of the macrocycle.

Base-promoted self-condensation reactions of trans-stilbene and diphenylacetylene monomers bearing 4-alkylamino and 4'-methoxycarbonyl groups were investigated. Reactions of N-propyl monomers under pseudohigh-dilution conditions (a THF solution of monomer was added dropwise to a THF solution of LiHMDS) afforded the corresponding cyclic triamides in good yields. X-ray crystallographic analysis showed that these cyclic triamides possessed an almost equilateral triangle structure with a cavity surrounded by tilted benzene rings.

A novel chiral spherical molecule composed of aromatic amide was synthesized in short steps. The molecule is constructed from four benzene rings connected by six amide bonds and has multiple functionalizable points and an asymmetric structure. The racemic spherical molecule constructed channel network structures in the crystalline state.

[Structure: see text] Bis(phosphine)boronium salts 3a-c were designed and prepared as key building blocks for the synthesis of highly congested diphosphinobenzenes. The preparation of sterically hindered ortho-phenylene-bridged diphosphines 1a-c was achieved by the reaction of the bis(phosphine)boronium salts 3a-c with difluorobenzenechromium complex 2 and subsequent removal of the BH2 group. The steric nature of diphosphine 1a was revealed in single-crystal X-ray analysis of its Rh complex.

An effective screening method combining parallel synthesis and solid-state CD measurements was established to identify achiral aromatic sulfonamides that show spontaneous resolution with rapidity. We found that 4 of the 12 achiral sulfonamides crystallized as chiral crystals through this method. The chirality of each sulfonamide was discriminated by solid-state CD spectra and Flack parameter in an X-ray analysis. Correspondence between the observed Cotton effect and the absolute configuration could be confirmed by time-dependent DFT calculations. [structure: see text]

Two kinds of functionalization of a lipid bilayer vesicle by titania were achieved by utilizing a cerasome-forming lipid, which is the starting material to prepare a cerasome, a morphologically stable lipid bilayer vesicle having an atomic layer of siloxane networks on its surface. One system is the preparation of the titania-coated cerasomes by immobilizing nanaometer-sizes of titania onto the surface siloxane network of cerasomes. The other is the creation of an asymmetric lipid bilayer structure on the surface of the colloidal titania particles. The characteristics of these surface- and core-functionalized vesicles were investigated, and it was found that these conjugates showed photocatalytic activity as evaluated by photolysis experiments of the cationic dye methylene blue.

Dinuclear and cubane-shaped lanthanide cluster complexes containing EuIII)and TbIII were synthesized by step-by-step construction using p-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene as a cluster-forming ligand. The sulfonylcalixarene adopts a pinched-cone conformation in the dinuclear complexes and a cone conformation in the cubane complexes. Because the calixarene has a large pi-conjugate system expanding over the entire molecule, it behaves as a good antenna chromophore for UV and near-UV light, and a slight conformational change of the calixarene (from cone to pinched-cone and vice versa) has an effect on the energy levels of excited S1 and T1 states. As a result, selectivity is observed in the luminescent properties of dinuclear and cubane-shaped systems of EuIII and TbIII.

[reaction: see text] (S)-2-(tert-Butylmethylphosphino)phenol and its methyl ether were synthesized from tert-butyldichlorophosphine via optically active phosphine-boranes as the intermediates. The former compound was used as a P/O hybrid ligand in the Cu-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition of diethylzinc to acyclic enones to achieve high enantioselectivity of up to 96%.

A triple helicate, having a macrocyclic aromatic amide structure, was synthesized in high yield because of a preorganized component of the tertiary benzenetrianilide moieties in a propeller-like syn conformation at both ends. The helicity was derived from tilted T-shaped aromatic-aromatic (CH-pi) interactions between each of the N-phenyl rings. [structure: see text]

We report the preparation of aqueous liposome dispersions of J-aggregates formed by the amphiphilic merocyanine dye (MD). A series of liposome-forming lipids were dispersed together with MD J-aggregates at different molar ratios of MD to lipid. The MD J-aggregate dispersions prepared with 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) at the MD to DMPC ratio of 0.16 exhibit good dispersibility; that is, they can be readily redispersed without any flocculation even after their precipitation. By use of different counterions for the MD molecules, two types of J-aggregate dispersions, one that exhibits an absorption band (J-band) at 635 nm (type I) and the other at 600 nm (type II), were obtained. As an example of the use of MD J-aggregates liposome dispersions, the thermochromic transformation of MD J-aggregates was demonstrated. When the dispersions are heated, J-aggregates of type I transformed into type II at a certain temperature (T(disp)). The parameters that control the speed of the transformation and the value of T(disp) were determined.

A three-dimensional packed vesicular assembly was successfully prepared by using an organic-inorganic hybrid, the Cerasome. This assembly was achieved by using an alternate layer-by-layer adsorption technique with the anionic and the cationic Cerasome derived from corresponding organoalkoxysilane amphiphiles. Adsorption quantities of each Cerasome layer were evaluated by employing a quartz crystal microbalance. The surface structure of the Cerasome paving on a substrate obtained in this way was observed by atomic force microscopy. The Cerasome particles closely packed like a stone pavement were clearly observed in both layers. In addition, the difference in the particle size for each layer indicates the cationic and anionic Cerasomes undoubtedly formed the layer-by-layer assembly. The layered paving of the vesicular nanoparticles was seen in every layer at least up to ten adsorption steps.

Neochlorogenic acid (3-CQA) and cryptochlorogenic acid (4-CQA), isolated from prune (Prunus domestica L.), were identified by NMR and MS analyses. In addition, the quantity of chlorogenic acid isomers in prune were measured by HPLC. These isomers, 3-CQA, 4-CQA, and chlorogenic acid (5-CQA), were contained in the ratio 78.7:18. 4:3.9, respectively. 4-CQA was identified and quantified in prune for the first time, and relatively high amounts of this isomer were characteristic. Antioxidative activities of the chlorogenic acid isomers, such as scavenging activity on superoxide anion radicals and inhibitory effect against oxidation of methyl linoleate, were also evaluated. Each isomer showed antioxidative activities which were almost the same.

A synthetic study was made on the active metabolite of cyclophosphamide. Ozonolysis of O-(3 butenyl)-N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)phosphorodiamidate, prepared by reaction of POC13 with 3-buten-1-ol followed by treatment with N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)amine (nor mustard) and NH3, afforded 2-[bis(2-chloroethyl)amino]-4-hydroperoxytetrahydro-2H-1, 3,2-oxazaphosphorine 2-oxide (4-hydroperoxycyclophosphamide). Deoxygenation of 4-hydroperoxycyclophosphamide by triphenylphosphine yielded 4-hydroxycyclophosphamide in a pure crystalline state. These products exhibited high cytostatic activity in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. The results give confirmatory evidence for the hypothesis that C4-hydroxylation on the 1,3,2-oxazaphosphorinane ring of cyclophosphamide is necessary for its activation.
