Two metal-organic framework materials, MFM-130 and MFM-131 (MFM = Manchester Framework Material), have been synthesized using two oligoparaxylene (OPX) tetracarboxylate linkers containing four and five aromatic rings, respectively. Both fof-type non-interpenetrated networks contain Kagomé lattice layers comprising [Cu2(COO)4] paddlewheel units and isophthalates, which are pillared by the OPX linkers. Desolvated MFM-130, MFM-130a, shows permanent porosity (BET surface area of 2173 m²/g, pore volume of 1.0 cm³/g), high H2 storage capacity at 77 K (5.3 wt% at 20 bar and 2.2 wt% at 1 bar), and a higher CH4 adsorption uptake (163 cm³(STP)/cm³ (35 bar and 298 K)) compared with its structural analogue, NOTT-103. MFM-130a also shows impressive selective adsorption of C2H2, C2H4, and C2H6 over CH4 at room temperature, indicating its potential for separation of C2 hydrocarbons from CH4. The single-crystal structure of MFM-131 confirms that the methyl substituents of the paraxylene units block the windows in the Kagomé lattice layer of the framework, effectively inhibiting network interpenetration in MFM-131. This situation is to be contrasted with that of the doubly interpenetrated oligophenylene analogue, NOTT-104. Calculation of the mechanical properties of these two MOFs confirms and explains the instability of MFM-131 upon desolvation in contrast to the behavior of MFM-130. The incorporation of paraxylene units, therefore, provides an efficient method for preventing network interpenetration as well as accessing new functional materials with modified and selective sorption properties for gas substrates. A rapid and efficient synthesis of the extended bipyridinium-based class of cyclophanes-that is, ExnBox4+ (n = 0-3), where n is the number of p-phenylene rings inserted between the pyridinium rings-is demonstrated, resulting in much higher yields of products along with a reduced output of oligomeric byproducts. Although each cyclophane can be synthesized readily without die use of a precise stoichiometric amount of template, ExBox4+ can be prepared in 66% yield (following crystallization) using six equivalents of pyrene in a template-directed protocol. This new methodology has been employed to synthesize, in modest yield, a nearly 2.5 nm long cyclophane consisting of 12 aromatic rings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Incorporation of two biphenylene-bridged 4,4'-bipyridinium extended viologen units into a para-phenylene-based cyclophane results in a synthetic receptor that is ~2 nm long and adopts a box-like geometry. This cyclophane, Ex2Box4+, possesses the ability to form binary and ternary complexes with a myriad of guest molecules ranging from long π-electron-rich polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as tetracene, tetraphene, and chrysene, to p-electron-poor 2,6-dinitrotoluene, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, and both the 9,10- and 1,4-anthraquinone molecules. Moreover, Ex²Box4+ is capable of forming one-to-one complexes with polyether macrocycles that consist of two p-electron-rich dioxynaphthalene units, namely, 1,5-dinaphtho[38]crown-10. This type of broad molecular recognition is possible because the electronic constitution of Ex²Box4+ is such that the pyridinium rings located at the "ends" of the cyclophane are electron-poor and prefer to enter into donor-acceptor interactions with π-electron-rich guests, while the "middle" of the cyclophane, consisting of the biphenylene spacer, is more electron-rich and can interact with π-electron-poor guests. In some cases, these different modes of binding can act in concert to generate one-to-one complexes which possess high stability constants in organic media. The binding affinity of Ex2Box4+ was investigated in the solid state by way of single-crystal X-ray diffraction and in solution by using UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy for 12 inclusion complexes consisting of the tetracationic cyclophane and the corresponding guests of different sizes, shapes, and electronic compositions. Additionally, density functional theory was carried out to elucidate the relative energetic differences between the different modes of binding of Ex2Box4+ with anthracene, 9,10-anthraquinone, and 1,4-anthraquinone in order to understand the degree with which each mode of binding contributes to the overall encapsulation of each guest. A novel, elegant, and significantly improved protocol for the synthesis of a protected octaacetylene phthalocyanine is described. Inexpensive, mild, and environmentally benign iodination of 1,2-dibromobenzene and subsequent optimized chemoselective palladium-catalyzed cyanation are employed to effectively build up the key intermediate 4,5-dibromophthalonitrile in two steps. Introduction of the tert-butyldimethylsilyl-protected acetylene moieties via a Sonogashira cross-coupling provides the desired phthalonitrile precursor that, after cyclization, yielded the protected octaacetylene phthalocyanine. Subsequently, in situ deprotection and "clicking" are employed as a highly efficient and quantitative route to a novel class of octatriazole-functionalized phthalocyanines. The ability of such triazole-derived phthalocyanines to form well-defined supramolecular structures upon doping with zinc(lI) triflate is demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although pristine C60 prefers to adopt a face-centered cubic packing arrangement in the solid state, it has been demonstrated that noncovalent-bonding interactions with a variety of molecular receptors lead to the complexation of C60 molecules, albeit usually with little or no control over their long-range order. Herein, an extended viologen-based cyclophane-ExBox24+-has been employed as a molecular receptor which, not only binds C60 one-on-one, but also results in the columnar self-assembly of the 1:1 inclusion complexes under ambient conditions. These one-dimensional arrays of fullerenes stack along the long axis of needle-like single crystals as a consequence of multiple noncovalent-bonding interactions between each of the inclusion complexes. The electrical conductivity of these crystals is on the order of 10-7 S cm-1, even without any evacuation of oxygen, and matches the conductivity of high-quality, unfunctionalized C60-based materials that typically require stringent high-temperature vaporization techniques, along with the careful removal of oxygen and moisture, prior to measuring their conductance. Fusion of three benzene rings in a triangular fashion gives rise to the smallest open-shell graphene fragment, the phenalenyl radical, whose π-extension leads to an entire family of non-Kekulé triangular nanographenes with high-spin ground states. Here, we report the first synthesis of unsubstituted phenalenyl on a Au(111) surface, which is achieved by combining in-solution synthesis of the hydro-precursor and on-surface activation by atomic manipulation, using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. Single-molecule structural and electronic characterizations confirm its open-shell S = 1/2 ground state that gives rise to Kondo screening on the Au(111) surface. In addition, we compare the phenalenyl's electronic properties with those of triangulene, the second homologue in the series, whose S = 1 ground state induces an underscreened Kondo effect. We demonstrate that structurally complex carbon nanostructures can be achieved via a synthetic approach that capitalizes on a π-radical reaction cascade. The cascade is triggered by oxidation of a dihydro precursor of helical diradicaloid nonacethrene to give a chiral contorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon named hypercethrene. In this ten-electron oxidation process, four σ-bonds, one π-bond, and three six-membered rings are formed in a sequence of up to nine steps to yield a 72-carbon-atom warped framework, comprising two configurationally locked [7]helicene units, a fluorescent peropyrene unit, and two precisely installed sp 3 -defects. The key intermediate in this cascade is a closed nonacethrene derivative with one quaternary sp 3 -center, presumably formed via an electrocyclic ring closure of nonacethrene, which, when activated by oxidation, undergoes a reaction cascade analogous to the oxidative dimerization of phenalenyl to peropyrene. By controlling the amount of oxidant used, two intermediates and one side product could be isolated and fully characterized, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and two intermediates were detected by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. In concert with density functional theory calculations, these intermediates support the proposed reaction mechanism. Compared to peropyrene, the absorption and emission of hypercethrene are slightly red-shifted on account of extended π-conjugation and the fluorescence quantum yield of 0.45 is decreased by a factor of ∼2. Enantiomerically enriched hypercethrene displays circularly polarized luminescence with a brightness value of 8.3 M -1 cm -1 . A simple abiological host-guest system demonstrates racemase activity with catalytic rate enhancements of 10 4 without employing traditional functional groups. Cooperative weak interactions enhanced through shape-complementarity between the catalyst active site and the reaction transition state drive this activity, as proposed by Pauling for enzymes. In analogy to the Jencks' concept of catalytic antibodies, it is shown that a hapten resembling the planar transition state of the bowl inversion acts as a potent inhibitor of this catalytic process. In contrast, no substrate/product inhibition is detected, and a relatively weak binding of the substrate is observed ( K a ≈ 10 2 M -1 at 293 K). This simple box-and-bowl system demonstrates that shape selectivity arising from cooperative dispersive forces suffices for the emergence of a catalytic system with an enzyme-like thermodynamic profile.

A new member of the cycloparaphenylene double-nanohoop family was synthesized. Its π-framework features two oval cavities that display different shapes depending on the crystallization conditions. Incorporation of the peropyrene bridge within the nanoring cycles via bay -regions alleviates steric effects and thus allows 1:1 complexation with C 60 in the solid state. This nanocarbon adopts a lamellar packing motif, and our results suggest that the structural adjustment of this double nanohoop could enable its use in supramolecular and semiconductive materials.

How does edge modification affect spin distribution in open-shell graphene fragments? We investigated this effect by analyzing spin-delocalization in benzo[ cd ]-triangulene, a spin 1/2 graphene fragment composed of seven benzenoid rings fused in a hybrid zigzag/armchair fashion. Six rings of this system form the core of Clar's hydrocarbon triangulene, to which an additional ring is annulated in the zigzag region. The singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) of this hydrocarbon radical resembles both SOMOs of triangulene, but the spin density is distributed over the core in a nonuniform fashion. The uneven spin distribution is reflected in the reactivity-reaction with oxygen occurs selectively at a position with the highest spin density-and correlates nicely with relative stabilities of the corresponding Clar resonance structures. The spin distribution is different from that of a topologically similar compound composed of the same number of sp 2 carbon atoms but featuring six rings only, illustrating the impact of subtle structural changes on spin-density distribution. This compound was characterized by means of UV-vis and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. The experimental results are supported by density functional theory calculations.

Cyclophanes, especially those where pyridinium units in conjugation with each other are linked up face-to-face within platforms that are held approximately 7 Å apart by rigid linkers, are capable of forming inclusion complexes with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with high binding affinities as a result of a combination of noncovalent bonding interactions, including face-to-face [π···π] stacking and orthogonal [C-H···π] interactions. Here, we report the template-directed, catalyst-assisted synthesis of a three-fold symmetric, extended pyridinium-based, cage-like host (ExCage(6+)) containing a total of six π-electron-deficient pyridinium units connected in a pairwise fashion by three bridging p-xylylene linkers, displayed in a trigonal (1,3,5) fashion around two opposing and parallel 1,3,5-tris(4-pyridinium)benzene platforms. The association constants (K(a)) of eight complexes have been measured by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) in acetonitrile and were found to span the range from 2.82 × 10(3) for naphthalene up to 5.5 × 10(6) M(-1) for perylene. The barriers to decomplexation, which were measured in DMF-d7 for phenanthrene, pyrene, triphenylene, and coronene by dynamic (1)H NMR spectroscopy undergo significant stepwise increases from 11.8 → 13.6 → 15.5 → >18.7 kcal mol(-1), respectively, while complexation experiments using rapid injection (1)H NMR spectroscopy in DMF-d7 at -55 °C revealed the barriers to complexation for pyrene and coronene to be 6.7 and >8 kcal mol(-1), respectively. The kinetic and thermodynamic data reveal that, in the case of ExCage(6+), while the smaller PAHs form complexes faster than the larger ones, the larger PAHs form stronger complexes than the smaller ones. It is also worthy of note that, as the complexes become stronger in the case of the larger and larger PAHs, the Rebek 55% solution formula for molecular recognition in the liquid state becomes less and less relevant.

Multielectron acceptors are essential components for artificial photosynthetic systems that must deliver multiple electrons to catalysts for solar fuels applications. The recently developed boxlike cyclophane incorporating two extended viologen units joined end-to-end by two p-phenylene linkers-namely, ExBox(4+)-has a potential to be integrated into light-driven systems on account of its ability to complex with π-electron-rich guests such as perylene, which has been utilized to great extent in many light-harvesting applications. Photodriven electron transfer to ExBox(4+) has not previously been investigated, however, and so its properties, following photoreduction, are largely unknown. Here, we investigate the structure and energetics of the various accessible oxidation states of ExBox(4+) using a combination of spectroscopy and computation. In particular, we examine photoinitiated electron transfer from perylene bound within ExBox(4+) (ExBox(4+)⊂perylene) using visible and near-infrared femtosecond transient absorption (fsTA) spectroscopy. The structure and conformational relaxation dynamics of ExBox(3+)⊂perylene(+) are observed with femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS). From the fsTA and FSRS spectra, we observe that the central p-phenylene spacer in one of the extended viologen units on one side of the cyclophane becomes more coplanar with its neighboring pyridinium units over the first ∼5 ps after photoreduction. When the steady-state structure of chemically generated ExBox(2+) is investigated using Raman spectroscopy, it is found to have the central p-phenylene rings in both of its extended viologen units rotated to be more coplanar with their neighboring pyridinium units, further underscoring the importance of this subunit in the stabilization of the reduced states of ExBox(4+).

A template-directed protocol, which capitalizes on donor-acceptor interactions, is employed to synthesize a semi-rigid cyclophane (ExBox(4+)) that adopts a box-like geometry and is comprised of π-electron-poor 1,4-phenylene-bridged ("extended") bipyridinium units (ExBIPY(2+)). ExBox(4+) functions as a high-affinity scavenger of an array of different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), ranging from two to seven fused rings, as a result of its large, accommodating cavity (approximately 3.5 Å in width and 11.2 Å in length when considering the van der Waals radii) and its ability to form strong non-covalent bonding interactions with π-electron-rich PAHs in either organic or aqueous media. In all, 11 PAH guests were observed to form inclusion complexes with ExBox(4+), with coronene being the largest included guest. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data for the 11 inclusion complexes ExBox(4+)⊂PAH as well as UV/vis spectroscopic data for 10 of the complexes provide evidence of the promiscuity of ExBox(4+) for the various PAHs. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetric analyses of 10 of the inclusion complexes are employed to further characterize the host-guest interactions in solution and determine the degree with which ExBox(4+) binds each PAH compound. As a proof-of-concept, a batch of crude oil from Saudi Arabia was subjected to extraction with the water-soluble form of the PAH receptor, ExBox·4Cl, resulting in the isolation of different aromatic compounds after ExBox·4Cl was regenerated.

A novel method to extend aromaticity by one benzene and two triazole rings was developed and optimized. This two-step route employs the copper-catalyzed azide-haloalkyne cycloaddition reaction of an ortho-bis(iodoacetylene) system and the subsequent intramolecular homocoupling fusion of the neighboring iodotriazoles, a process in which an additional benzene ring is formed. This versatile methodology allows one to extend the core size of chromophores and, consequently, to tune the material's properties.
