Abstract

Research has been conducted on nickel, palladium and platinum tetracyanometalates with 2,2'-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline cyclic diquaternary cations. The synthesis and characterization of these compounds have been carried out and the results are reported.

Abstract

With the aim of improving the response in magnetic hyperthermia treatments and other biomedical applications, a nanoparticle system based on nickel ferrites has been investigated. Monodisperse ferrite nanoparticles with different proportions of Ni ions and sizes have been produced by an optimized synthesis based on the thermal decomposition method and the seed-growth technique. All samples were chemically and structurally characterized by different methods, and the magnetic behavior has been analyzed by means of field and temperature dependent magnetization measurements and electronic magnetic resonance. It has been proved that low proportions of Ni cation in the structure favors high saturation magnetization values and a reduction of the magnetic anisotropy constant. The optimized nanoparticles were transferred to water. Such nanoparticles are innocuous at concentrations up to 0.5 mg/mL and are convenient MRI contrast agents. Those samples with lower percentages of Ni atoms and bigger particle sizes presented the highest specific absorption rate, and, for instance, they are the most adequate for magnetic hyperthermia applications.

Abstract

We report a direct observation of the intrinsic magnetization behavior of Au in thiol-capped gold nanoparticles with permanent magnetism at room temperature. Two element specific techniques have been used for this purpose: X-ray magnetic circular dichroism on the L edges of the Au and 197Au Mössbauer spectroscopy. Besides, we show that silver and copper nanoparticles synthesized by the same chemical procedure also present room-temperature permanent magnetism. The observed permanent magnetism at room temperature in Ag and Cu dodecanethiol-capped nanoparticles proves that the physical mechanisms associated to this magnetization process can be extended to more elements, opening the way to new and still not-discovered applications and to new possibilities to research basic questions of magnetism.
