We present the change of light absorption of cyanobacteria in response to externally applied electrical polarization. Specifically, we studied the relation between electrical polarization and changes in light absorbance for a biophotoelectrode assembly comprising boron-doped diamond as semiconducting electrode and live Limnospira indica PCC 8005 trichomes embedded in either polysaccharide (agar) or conductive conjugated polymer (PEDOT-PSS) matrices. Our study involves the monitoring of cyanobacterial absorbance and the measurement of photocurrents at varying wavelengths of illumination for switched electric fields, i.e., using the bioelectrode either as an anode or as cathode. We observed changes in the absorbance characteristics, indicating a direct causal relationship between electrical polarization and absorbing properties of L. indica . Our finding opens up a potential avenue for optimization of the performance of biophotovoltaic devices through controlled polarization. Despite its broad potential applications, substitution of carbon by transition metal atoms in graphene has so far been explored only to a limited extent. We report the realization of substitutional Mn doping of graphene to a record high atomic concentration of 0.5%, which was achieved using ultralow-energy ion implantation. By correlating the experimental data with the results of ab initio Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics calculations, we infer that direct substitution is the dominant mechanism of impurity incorporation. Thermal annealing in ultrahigh vacuum provides efficient removal of surface contaminants and additional implantation-induced disorder, resulting in Mn-doped graphene that, aside from the substitutional Mn impurities, is essentially as clean and defect-free as the as-grown layer. We further show that the Dirac character of graphene is preserved upon substitutional Mn doping, even in this high concentration regime, making this system ideal for studying the interaction between Dirac conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments. More generally, these results show that ultralow energy ion implantation can be used for controlled functionalization of graphene with substitutional transition-metal atoms, of relevance for a wide range of applications, from magnetism and spintronics to single-atom catalysis.

Monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO 2 (M)) is a promising material for various applications ranging from sensing to signature management and smart windows. Most applications rely on its reversible structural phase transition to rutile VO 2 (VO 2 (R)), which is accompanied by a metal-to-insulator transition. Bottom-up hydrothermal synthesis has proven to yield high quality monoclinic VO 2 but requires toxic and highly reactive reducing agents that cannot be used outside of a research lab. Here, we present a new hydrothermal synthesis method using nontoxic and safe-to-use oxalic acid as a reducing agent for V 2 O 5 to produce VO 2 (M). In early stages of the process, polymorphs VO 2 (A) and VO 2 (B) were formed, which subsequently recrystallized to VO 2 (M). Without the presence of W 6+ , this recrystallization did not occur. After a reaction time of 96 h at 230 °C in the presence of (NH 4 ) 6 H 2 W 12 O 40 in Teflon-lined rotated autoclaves, we realized highly crystalline, phase pure W-doped VO 2 (M) microparticles of uniform size and asterisk shape (Δ H = 28.30 J·g -1 , arm length = 6.7 ± 0.4 μm, arm width = 0.46 ± 0.06 μm). We extensively investigated the role of W 6+ in the kinetics of formation of VO 2 (M) and the thermodynamics of its structural phase transition.

Surface treatment is critical for homogeneous coating over a large area and high-resolution patterning of nanodiamond (ND) particles. To optimize the interaction between the surface of a substrate and the colloid of ND particles, it is essential to remove hydrocarbon contamination by surface treatment and to increase the surface energy of the substrate, hence improving the diamond film homogeneity upon its deposition. However, the impact of substrate surface treatment on the properties of coatings and patterns is not fully understood. This study explores the impact of UV-ozone, O 2 plasma, and CF 4 plasma treatments on the wetting properties of the fused silica glass substrate surface. We identify the optimal time interval between the treatment and subsequent ND coating/patterning processes, which were conducted using inkjet printing and ultrasonic spray coating techniques. Our results showed that UV-ozone and O 2 plasma resulted in hydrophilic surfaces, while CF 4 plasma treatment resulted in hydrophobic surfaces. We demonstrate the use of CF 4 plasma treatment before inkjet printing to generate high-resolution patterns with dots as small as 30 μm in diameter. Ultrasonic spray coating showed homogeneous coatings after using UV-ozone and O 2 plasma treatment. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the hydrocarbon airborne contamination on cleaned surfaces over time even in clean-room environments and have a notable impact on the performance of liquid coatings and patterns. We highlight the importance of timing between the surface treatment and printing in achieving high resolution or homogeneity.

Nanomaterials are driving advances in technology due to their oftentimes superior properties over bulk materials. In particular, their thermal properties become increasingly important as efficient heat dissipation is required to realize high-performance electronic devices, reduce energy consumption, and prevent thermal damage. One application where nanomaterials can play a crucial role is extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, where pellicles that protect the photomask from particle contamination have to be transparent to EUV light, mechanically strong, and thermally conductive in order to withstand the heat associated with high-power EUV radiation. Free-standing carbon nanotube (CNT) films have emerged as candidates due to their high EUV transparency and ability to withstand heat. However, the thermal transport properties of these films are not well understood beyond bulk emissivity measurements. Here, we measure the thermal conductivity of free-standing CNT films using all-optical Raman thermometry at temperatures between 300 and 700 K. We find thermal conductivities up to 50 W m -1 K -1 for films composed of double-walled CNTs, which rises to 257 W m -1 K -1 when considering the CNT network alone. These values are remarkably high for randomly oriented CNT networks, roughly seven times that of single-walled CNT films. The enhanced thermal conduction is due to the additional wall, which likely gives rise to additional heat-carrying phonon modes and provides a certain resilience to defects. Our results demonstrate that free-standing double-walled CNT films efficiently dissipate heat, enhancing our understanding of these promising films and how they are suited to applications in EUV lithography.

This work introduces a polymeric backbone eutectogel (P-ETG) hybrid solid-state electrolyte with an N -isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) backbone for high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The NIPAM-based P-ETG is (electro)chemically compatible with commercially relevant positive electrode materials such as the nickel-rich layered oxide LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC622). The chemical compatibility was demonstrated through (physico)chemical characterization methods. The nonexistence (within detection limits) of interfacial reactions between the electrolyte and the positive electrode, the unchanged bulk crystallographic composition, and the absence of transition metal ions leaching from the positive electrode in contact with the electrolyte were demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis, respectively. Moreover, the NIPAM-based P-ETG demonstrates a wide electrochemical stability window (1.5-5.0 V vs Li + /Li) and a reasonably high ionic conductivity at room temperature (0.82 mS cm -1 ). The electrochemical compatibility of a high-potential NMC622-containing positive electrode and the P-ETG is further demonstrated in Li|P-ETG|NMC622 cells, which deliver a discharge capacity of 134, 110, and 97 mAh g -1 at C/5, C/2, and 1C, respectively, after 90 cycles. The Coulombic efficiency is >95% at C/5, C/2, and 1C. Hence, gaining scientific insights into the compatibility of the electrolytes with positive electrode materials that are relevant to the commercial market, like NMC622, is important because this requires going beyond the electrolyte design itself, which is essential to their practical applications., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2023 The Authors. Fabrication of patterned boron-doped diamond (BDD) in an inexpensive and straightforward way is required for a variety of practical applications, including the development of BDD-based electrochemical sensors. This work describes a simplified and novel bottom-up fabrication approach for BDD-based three-electrode sensor chips utilizing direct inkjet printing of diamond nanoparticles on silicon-based substrates. The whole seeding process, accomplished by a commercial research inkjet printer with piezo-driven drop-on-demand printheads, was systematically examined. Optimized and continuous inkjet-printed features were obtained with glycerol-based diamond ink (0.4% vol/wt), silicon substrates pretreated by exposure to oxygen plasma and subsequently to air, and applying a dot density of 750 drops (volume 9 pL) per inch. Next, the dried micropatterned substrate was subjected to a chemical vapor deposition step to grow uniform thin-film BDD, which satisfied the function of both working and counter electrodes. Silver was inkjet-printed to complete the sensor chip with a reference electrode. Scanning electron micrographs showed a closed BDD layer with a typical polycrystalline structure and sharp and well-defined edges. Very good homogeneity in diamond layer composition and a high boron content (∼2 × 10 21 atoms cm -3 ) was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Important electrochemical characteristics, including the width of the potential window (2.5 V) and double-layer capacitance (27 μF cm -2 ), were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry. Fast electron transfer kinetics was recognized for the [Ru(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+/2+ redox marker due to the high doping level, while somewhat hindered kinetics was observed for the surface-sensitive [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4- probe. Furthermore, the ability to electrochemically detect organic compounds of different structural motifs, such as glucose, ascorbic acid, uric acid, tyrosine, and dopamine, was successfully verified and compared with commercially available screen-printed BDD electrodes. The newly developed chip-based manufacture method enables the rapid prototyping of different small-scale electrode designs and BDD microstructures, which can lead to enhanced sensor performance with capability of repeated use.

Self-assembled monolayers of corrosion inhibitors of the mercaptobenzimidazole family, SH-BimH, SH-BimH-5NH 2 , and SH-BimH-5OMe, were formed on template-stripped ultraflat Au surfaces using microcontact printing, and subsequently analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and AFM-force spectroscopy (AFM-FS) using a quantitative imaging (QI) mode. Printing of all used inhibitor molecules resulted in clear patterns and in slightly more compact films compared to immersion. The stability of the monolayers is further probed by AFM-FS. Adhesion values of laterally heterogeneous inhibitor-modified surfaces compared to bare Au surfaces, nonpatterned areas, and fully covered surfaces are analyzed and discussed. Microcontact printing confers a superior nanomechanical stability to imidazole-modified films of the printed surface patches as compared to homogeneously covered surfaces by immersion into the inhibitor solution.

Polycrystalline diamond has the potential to improve the osseointegration of orthopedic implants compared to conventional materials such as titanium. However, despite the excellent biocompatibility and superior mechanical properties, the major challenge of using diamond for implants, such as those used for hip arthroplasty, is the limitation of microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques to synthesize diamond on complex-shaped objects. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate diamond growth on titanium acetabular shells using the surface wave plasma CVD method. Polycrystalline diamond coatings were synthesized at low temperatures (∼400 °C) on three types of acetabular shells with different surface structures and porosities. We achieved the growth of diamond on highly porous surfaces designed to mimic the structure of the trabecular bone and improve osseointegration. Biocompatibility was investigated on nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) and ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) coatings terminated either with hydrogen or oxygen. To understand the role of diamond surface topology and chemistry in the attachment and proliferation of mammalian cells, we investigated the adsorption of extracellular matrix proteins and monitored the metabolic activity of fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The interaction of bovine serum albumin and type I collagen with the diamond surfaces was investigated by confocal fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). We found that the proliferation of osteogenic cells was better on hydrogen-terminated UNCD than on the oxygen-terminated counterpart. These findings correlated with the behavior of collagen on diamond substrates observed by FLIM. Hydrogen-terminated UNCD provided better adhesion and proliferation of osteogenic cells, compared to titanium, while the growth of fibroblasts was poorest on hydrogen-terminated NCD and MSCs behaved similarly on all tested surfaces. These results open new opportunities for application of diamond coatings on orthopedic implants to further improve bone fixation and osseointegration.

Microplates have become a standard tool in the pharmaceutical industry and academia for a broad range of screening assays. One of the most commonly performed assays is the cell proliferation assay, which is often used for the purpose of drug discovery. Microplate readers play a crucial role in this field, as they enable high-throughput testing of large sample numbers. Common drawbacks of the most popular plate reader technologies are that they are end-point-based and most often require the use of detection reagents. As a solution, with this work, we aim to expand the possibilities of real-time and label-free monitoring of cell proliferation inside a microplate format by introducing a novel thermal-based sensing approach. For this purpose, we have developed thin-film sensors that can easily be integrated into the bottom of standard 96-well plates. First, the accuracy and precision of the sensors for measuring temperature and thermal effusivity are assessed via characterization experiments. These experiments highlight the fast response of the sensors to changes in temperature and thermal effusivity, as well as the excellent reproducibility between different sensors. Later, proof-of-principle measurements were performed on the proliferation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae . The proliferation measurements show that the thermal sensors were able to simultaneously detect relative changes in cell number as well as changes in metabolic activity. This dual functionality makes the presented sensor technology a promising candidate for monitoring microplate assays.

We report the formation of nanobubbles on graphene with a radius of the order of 1 nm, using ultralow energy implantation of noble gas ions (He, Ne, Ar) into graphene grown on a Pt(111) surface. We show that the universal scaling of the aspect ratio, which has previously been established for larger bubbles, breaks down when the bubble radius approaches 1 nm, resulting in much larger aspect ratios. Moreover, we observe that the bubble stability and aspect ratio depend on the substrate onto which the graphene is grown (bubbles are stable for Pt but not for Cu) and trapped element. We interpret these dependencies in terms of the atomic compressibility of the noble gas as well as of the adhesion energies between graphene, the substrate, and trapped atoms.

Sulfur particles with a conductive polymer coating of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) "PEDOT" were prepared by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma technology under atmospheric conditions (low temperature, ambient pressure). We report a solvent-free, low-cost, low-energy-consumption, safe, and low-risk process to make the material development and production compatible for sustainable technologies. Different coating protocols were developed to produce PEDOT-coated sulfur powders with electrical conductivity in the range of 10 -8 -10 -5 S/cm. The raw sulfur powder (used as the reference) and (low-, optimum-, high-) PEDOT-coated sulfur powders were used to assemble lithium-sulfur (Li-S) cells with a high sulfur loading of ∼4.5 mg/cm 2 . Long-term galvanostatic cycling at C/10 for 100 cycles showed that the capacity fade was mitigated by ∼30% for the cells containing the optimum-PEDOT-coated sulfur in comparison to the reference Li-S cells with raw sulfur. Rate capability, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance analyzes confirmed the improved behavior of the PEDOT-coated sulfur as an active material for lithium-sulfur batteries. The Li-S cells containing optimum-PEDOT-coated sulfur showed the highest reproducibility of their electrochemical properties. A wide variety of bulk and surface characterization methods including conductivity analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and NMR spectroscopy were used to explain the chemical features and the superior behavior of Li-S cells using the optimum-PEDOT-coated sulfur material. Moreover, postmortem [SEM and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)] analyzes of uncoated and coated samples allowed us to exclude any significant effect at the electrode scale even after 70 cycles.

The chemical patterning of graphene is being pursued tenaciously due to exciting possibilities in electronics, catalysis, sensing, and photonics. Despite the intense efforts, spatially controlled, multifunctional covalent patterning of graphene has not been achieved. The lack of control originates from the inherently poor reactivity of the basal plane of graphene, which necessitates the use of harsh chemistries. Here, we demonstrate spatially resolved multicomponent covalent chemical patterning of single layer graphene using a facile and efficient method. Three different functional groups could be covalently attached to the basal plane in dense, well-defined patterns using a combination of lithography and a self-limiting variant of diazonium chemistry requiring no need for graphene activation. The layer thickness of the covalent films could be controlled down to 1 nm. This work provides a solid foundation for the fabrication of chemically patterned multifunctional graphene interfaces for device applications.

Cable bacteria are electroactive bacteria that form a long, linear chain of ridged cylindrical cells. These filamentous bacteria conduct centimeter-scale long-range electron transport through parallel, interconnected conductive pathways of which the detailed chemical and electrical properties are still unclear. Here, we combine time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the structure and composition of this naturally occurring electrical network. The enhanced lateral resolution achieved allows differentiation between the cell body and the cell-cell junctions that contain a conspicuous cartwheel structure. Three ToF-SIMS modes were compared in the study of so-called fiber sheaths (i.e., the cell material that remains after the removal of cytoplasm and membranes, and which embeds the electrical network). Among these, fast imaging delayed extraction (FI-DE) was found to balance lateral and mass resolution, thus yielding the following multiple benefits in the study of structure-composition relations in cable bacteria: (i) it enables the separate study of the cell body and cell-cell junctions; (ii) by combining FI-DE with in situ AFM, the depth of Ni-containing protein-key in the electrical transport-is determined with greater precision; and (iii) this combination prevents contamination, which is possible when using an ex situ AFM. Our results imply that the interconnects in extracted fiber sheaths are either damaged during extraction, or that their composition is different from fibers, or both. From a more general analytical perspective, the proposed methodology of ToF-SIMS in the FI-DE mode combined with in situ AFM holds great promise for studying the chemical structure of other biological systems.

We report the incorporation of substitutional Mn atoms in high-quality, epitaxial graphene on Cu(111), using ultralow-energy ion implantation. We characterize in detail the atomic structure of substitutional Mn in a single carbon vacancy and quantify its concentration. In particular, we are able to determine the position of substitutional Mn atoms with respect to the Moiré superstructure ( i . e ., local graphene-Cu stacking symmetry) and to the carbon sublattice; in the out-of-plane direction, substitutional Mn atoms are found to be slightly displaced toward the Cu surface, that is, effectively underneath the graphene layer. Regarding electronic properties, we show that graphene doped with substitutional Mn to a concentration of the order of 0.04%, with negligible structural disorder (other than the Mn substitution), retains the Dirac-like band structure of pristine graphene on Cu(111), making it an ideal system in which to study the interplay between local magnetic moments and Dirac electrons. Our work also establishes that ultralow-energy ion implantation is suited for substitutional magnetic doping of graphene. Given the flexibility, reproducibility, and scalability inherent to ion implantation, our work creates numerous opportunities for research on magnetic functionalization of graphene and other two-dimensional materials.

We propose a method to measure the fundamental parameters that govern diffusion transport in optically thin quantum dot semiconductor films and apply it to quantum dot materials with different ligands. Thin films are excited optically, and the profile of photogenerated carriers is modeled using diffusion-based transport equations and taking into account the optical cavity effects. Correlation with steady-state photoluminescence experiments on different stacks comprising a quenching layer allows the extraction of the carrier diffusion length accurately from the experimental data. In the time domain, the mapping of the transient PL data with the solutions of the time-dependent diffusion equation leads to accurate calculations of the photogenerated carrier mobility. These findings allow the estimation of the speed limitations for diffusion-based transport in QD absorbers.

Electron emission signifies an important mechanism facilitating the enlargement of devices that have modernized large parts of science and technology. Today, the search for innovative electron emission devices for imaging, sensing, electronics, and high-energy physics continues. Integrating two materials with dissimilar electronic properties into a hybrid material is an extremely sought-after synergistic approach, envisioning a superior field electron emission (FEE) material. An innovation is described regarding the fabrication of a nanostructured carbon hybrid, resulting from the one-step growth of boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond (BNCD) and carbon nanospikes (CNSs) by a microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique. Spectroscopic and microscopic tools are used to investigate the morphological, bonding, and microstructural characteristics related to the growth mechanism of these hybrids. Utilizing the benefits of both the sharp edges of the CNSs and the high stability of BNCD, promising FEE performance with a lower turn-on field of 1.3 V/μm, a higher field enhancement factor of 6780, and a stable FEE current stability lasting for 780 min is obtained. The microplasma devices utilizing these hybrids as a cathode illustrate a superior plasma illumination behavior. Such hybrid carbon nanostructures, with superb electron emission characteristics, can encourage the enlargement of several electron emission device technologies.

The recent cost-driven transition from silver- to copper-based inks for printing on flexible substrates is connected with new key challenges. Given the high oxidation sensitivity of copper inks before, during, and after the curing process, the conductivity and thereby the device performance can be affected. Strategies to limit or even avoid this drawback include the development of metal organic decomposition (MOD) inks with selected "protective" ligands. In this study, the influence of the ligand on the oxide formation during the ink decomposition process is described using a wide variety of in situ characterization techniques. It is demonstrated that bidentate ligands provide an improved oxidation barrier, although the copper preservation mechanism has its limits: oxygen can interfere in every reduction pathway depending on the curing duration and atmospheric conditions. The generated insights can be applied in the further evolution toward ambient-curable copper MOD inks.

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy experiments under ultrahigh vacuum and low-temperature conditions have been performed on water-intercalated graphene on Pt(111). We find that the confined water layer, with a thickness around 0.35 nm, induces a strong hole doping in graphene, i.e., the Dirac point locates at round 0.64 eV above the Fermi level. This can be explained by the presence of a single "puckered bilayer" of ice-Ih, which has not been experimentally found on bare Pt(111), being confined in between graphene and Pt(111) surface. Moreover, the water intercalation makes graphene highly decoupled from the substrate, allowing us to reveal the intrinsic graphene phonons and double Rydberg series of even and odd symmetry image-potential states. Our work not only demonstrates that the electronic properties of graphene can be tuned by the confined water layer between graphene and the substrate, but also provides a generally applicable method to study the intrinsic properties of graphene as well as of other supported two-dimensional materials.

Microstructural evolution of nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) nanoneedles owing to the addition of methane and nitrogen in the reactant gases is systematically addressed. It has been determined that varying the concentration of CH 4 in the CH 4 /H 2 /N 2 plasma is significant to tailor the morphology and microstructure of NCD films. While NCD films grown with 1% CH 4 in a CH 4 /H 2 /N 2 (3%) plasma contain large diamond grains, the microstructure changed considerably for NCD films grown using 5% (or 10%) CH 4 , ensuing in nanosized diamond grains. For 15% CH 4 -grown NCD films, a well-defined nanoneedle structure evolves. These NCD nanoneedle films contain sp 3 phase diamond, sheathed with sp 2 -bonded graphitic phases, achieving a low resistivity of 90 Ω cm and enhanced field electron emission (FEE) properties, namely, a low turn-on field of 4.3 V/μm with a high FEE current density of 3.3 mA/cm 2 (at an applied field of 8.6 V/μm) and a significant field enhancement factor of 3865. Furthermore, a microplasma device utilizing NCD nanoneedle films as cathodes can trigger a gas breakdown at a low threshold field of 3600 V/cm attaining a high plasma illumination current density of 1.14 mA/cm 2 at an applied voltage of 500 V, and a high plasma lifetime stability of 881 min is evidenced. The optical emission spectroscopy studies suggest that the C 2 , CN, and CH species in the growing plasma are the major causes for the observed microstructural evolution in the NCD films. However, the increase in substrate temperature to ∼780 °C due to the incorporation of 15% CH 4 in the CH 4 /H 2 /N 2 plasma is the key driver resulting in the origin of nanoneedles in NCD films. The outstanding optoelectronic characteristics of these nanoneedle films make them suitable as cathodes in high-brightness display panels.

Methane, which has a high energy storage density and is safely stored and transported in our existing infrastructure, can be produced through conversion of the undesired energy carrier H 2 with CO 2 . Methane production with standard transition-metal catalysts requires high-temperature activation (300-500 °C). Alternatively, semiconductor metal oxide photocatalysts can be used, but they require high-intensity UV light. Here, we report a Ru metal catalyst that facilitates methanation below 250 °C using sunlight as an energy source. Although at low solar intensity (1 sun) the activity of the Ru catalyst is mainly attributed to thermal effects, we identified a large nonthermal contribution at slightly elevated intensities (5.7 and 8.5 sun) resulting in a high photon-to-methane efficiency of up to 55% over the whole solar spectrum. We attribute the excellent sunlight-harvesting ability of the catalyst and the high photon-to-methane efficiency to its UV-vis-NIR plasmonic absorption. Graphene-based two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising candidates for a number of different energy applications. A particularly interesting one is in next generation supercapacitors, where graphene is being explored as an electrode material in combination with room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) as electrolytes. Because the amount of energy that can be stored in such supercapacitors critically depends on the electrode-electrolyte interface, there is considerable interest in understanding the structure and properties of the graphene/IL interface. Here, we report the changes in the properties of graphene upon adsorption of a homologous series of alkyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ILs using a combination of experimental and theoretical tools. Raman spectroscopy reveals that these ILs cause n-type doping of graphene, and the magnitude of doping increases with increasing cation chain length despite the expected decrease in the density of surface-adsorbed ions. Molecular modeling simulations show that doping originates from the changes in the electrostatic potential at the graphene/IL interface. The findings described here represent an important step in developing a comprehensive understanding of the graphene/IL interface.

Fast and scalable low-temperature deposition of microscale metallic features is of utmost importance for the development of future flexible smart applications including sensors, wireless communication, and wearables. Recently, a new class of metal-organic decomposition (MOD) copper inks was developed, consisting of self-reducing copper formate containing amine complexes. From these novel inks, copper metal features with outstanding electrical conductivity (±10 5 S cm -1 ) are deposited at a temperature of 150 °C or less, which is well below the reduction temperature of orthorhombic α-copper formate (around 225 °C). However, the underlying principle of this reaction mechanism and the relationship between the corresponding temperature shift and the amine coordination are still under debate. The current study provides a full explanation for the shift in reduction temperatures via in situ characterization. The results clearly indicate that the structural resemblance and stability of the Cu(II) starting compound and the occurring Cu(I) intermediate during the in situ reduction are the two main variables that rationalize the temperature shift. As such, the thermal compatibility of copper MOD inks with conventional plastic substrates such as polyethylene terephthalate can be explained, based on metal-organic complex properties.

The impact of lithium-ion implantation and postannealing processes on improving the electrical conductivity and field electron emission (FEE) characteristics of nitrogen-doped nanocrystalline diamond (nNCD) films was observed to be distinctly different from those of undoped NCD (uNCD) films. A high-dose Li-ion implantation induced the formation of electron trap centers inside the diamond grains and amorphous carbon (a-C) phases in grain boundaries for both types of NCD films. Postannealing at 1000 °C healed the defects, eliminated the electron trap centers, and converted the a-C into nanographitic phases. The abundant nanographitic phases in the grain boundaries of the nNCD films as compared to the uNCD films made an interconnected path for effectual electron transport and consequently enhanced the FEE characteristics of nNCD films., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Controlling the molecular organization of organic self-assembled monolayers (SAM) is of utmost importance in nanotechnology, molecular electronics, and surface science. Here we propose two well-differentiated approaches, double printing based on microcontact printing (μ-cp) and molecular backfilling adsorption, to produce complex alkanethiol films. The resulting films on model Au surfaces were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle measurements. Double printing alkanethiols results in clear coexisting regions where no molecular displacement is observed, highlighting the slow diffusion rates of long alkanethiols and large attractive interaction between long alkyl chains. Exposing a single-print μ-cp Au substrate to an additional alkanethiol solution yields the formation of differently ordered domain boundaries with different thickness and micrometer lateral size. The high order is a result of enhanced molecular mobility and restructuring during solution backfilling. The formed molecular assemblies constitute an excellent testing ground for nanoscale phenomena that strongly depend on the nanoscale geometrical and chemical features of the surface such as designed functionality or corrosion initiation and inhibition.

The key steps of a transfer of two-dimensional (2D) materials are the delamination of the as-grown material from a growth substrate and the lamination of the 2D material on a target substrate. In state-of-the-art transfer experiments, these steps remain very challenging, and transfer variations often result in unreliable 2D material properties. Here, it is demonstrated that interfacial water can insert between graphene and its growth substrate despite the hydrophobic behavior of graphene. It is understood that interfacial water is essential for an electrochemistry-based graphene delamination from a Pt surface. Additionally, the lamination of graphene to a target wafer is hindered by intercalation effects, which can even result in graphene delamination from the target wafer. For circumvention of these issues, a direct, support-free graphene transfer process is demonstrated, which relies on the formation of interfacial water between graphene and its growth surface, while avoiding water intercalation between graphene and the target wafer by using hydrophobic silane layers on the target wafer. The proposed direct graphene transfer also avoids polymer contamination (no temporary support layer) and eliminates the need for etching of the catalyst metal. Therefore, recycling of the growth template becomes feasible. The proposed transfer process might even open the door for the suggested atomic-scale interlocking-toy-brick-based stacking of different 2D materials, which will enable a more reliable fabrication of van der Waals heterostructure-based devices and applications.

The interest in solid-supported biomimetic membranes stems from their utility in nanotechnology and biosensing. In particular, supported lipid vesicles (SLVs) have become popular in both fundamental biophysical studies and pharmaceutical screening applications. It is thus essential to gain information on the structural properties and phase behavior of SLVs. Here we report on a study on the influence of cholesterol on the phase behavior of SLVs of saturated phospholipids by using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, a label-free and nonintrusive surface-sensitive technique. Two complementary approaches have been used, a Voigt-based viscoelastic model yielding shear viscosity temperature profiles and the first-order derivative of the frequency (mass-sensitive) shifts. Anomalies in the shear viscosity and extrema in the first-order derivative frequency curves stand as a token of the main phase transition and provide information on its gradual suppression upon addition of cholesterol. This method proves convenient for its small sample volume needed, its short temperature equilibration time and the non-necessity of external labels. This work can be regarded as a starting point for further studies on more rare lipid systems and different geometries, such as tethered SLVs or biologically relevant vesicles produced by living cells.

Functional oxide films were obtained at low temperature by combination of aqueous precursors and a UV-assisted annealing process (aqueous photochemical solution deposition). For a PbTiO(3) model system, functional ferroelectric perovskite films were prepared at only 400 °C, a temperature compatible with the current Si-technology demands. Intrinsically photosensitive and environmentally friendly aqueous precursors can be prepared for most of the functional multimetal oxides, as additionally demonstrated here for multiferroic BiFeO(3), yielding virtually unlimited possibilities for this low-temperature fabrication technology.

Cellular adhesion and growth on solid-state surfaces is the central theme in the development of cell-based biosensors and implantable medical devices. Suitable interface techniques must be applied to construct stable and well-organized thin films of biologically active molecules that would control the development of neuronal cells on chips. Peptides such as RGD fragments, poly-L-lysine (PLL), or basal lamina proteins, such as laminin or fibronectin, are often used in order to promote cellular adhesion on surfaces. In this paper we describe the characterization of several self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for their ability to anchor a laminin-derived synthetic peptide, PA22-2, a peptide known to promote neuronal attachment and stimulate neurite outgrowth. We have evaluated the immobilization of PA22-2 onto 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid, 4-maleimide-N-(11-undecyldithio)butanamide, and 2-(maleimide)ethyl-N-(11-hexaethylene oxide-undecyldithio)acetamide SAM functionalized Au substrates. The neuronal attachment and outgrowth have been evaluated in embryonic mouse hippocampal neuron cultures up to 14 days in vitro. Our results show that differences in the cell morphologies were observed on the surfaces modified with various SAMs, despite the minor differences in chemical composition identified using standard characterization tools. These different cell morphologies can most probably be explained when investigating the effect of a given SAM layer on the adsorption of proteins present in the culture medium. More likely, it is the ratio between the specific PA22-2 adsorption and nonspecific medium protein adsorption that controls the cellular morphology. Large amounts of adsorbed medium proteins could screen the PA22-2 sites required for cellular attachment.

The absorption spectrum of noble metal spherical nanoparticles is known to be strongly influenced by the dielectric constant of the surrounding material, and as such, these particles are well suited for biosensing applications. To perform biosensing using nanoparticles on a substrate, the metal particles are covalently attached onto quartz using an organic adhesion layer of mercaptosilanes. The particles in solution are characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, while those attached to the quartz are characterized with UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Antibodies are attached to the metal nanoparticles, and the antigen recognition is monitored via the change of light absorption when this binding event occurs. Not only is the absorbance originating from plasmon resonances of the particles influenced by the dielectric properties of molecules attached to the nanospheres but also the interband absorption of the particles changes, which will be demonstrated in this report. A light absorption change is detected when a molecular recognition occurs between the bioreceptor molecules attached to the nanoparticle and a biomolecular counterpart. This change in absorption can be very large when adhered molecules are at resonance (interband transitions). In addition, the presented type of biosensing can be a cost-effective and easy to use alternative to conventional biosensing techniques.
