High-efficiency electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is among the promising approaches for future low-cost hydrogen production. The cost and effectiveness challenges of electrocatalysts have significantly limited the development of electrochemical HER. Metal–organic framework (MOF) derivatives with tunable conformations and remarkable activity have shown unique capabilities in electrocatalytic hydrogen precipitation. Herein, we report a simple method for the synthesis of MOF-derived MoO2/NC with decorated Pt nanostructures. Thus, the synthesized MoO2/NC/Pt-20 nanostructures with a rod-like structure exhibit better pH-universal HER performance with overpotentials of 32, 53, and 70 mV in alkaline, acidic, and neutral conditions (10 mA·cm–2), respectively. Also, the electrocatalysts show low cell voltages of 1.58, 1.59, and 1.70 V at 10 mA·cm–2 for overall water splitting in alkaline, acidic, and neutral conditions, respectively. An efficient fragment-based approach for predicting the ground-state energies and structures of large molecules at the Hartree-Fock (HF) and post-HF levels is described. The physical foundation of this approach is attributed to the "quantum locality" of the electron correlation energy and the HF total energy, which is revealed by a new energy decomposition analysis of the HF total energy proposed in this work. This approach is based on the molecular fractionation with conjugated caps (MFCC) scheme (Zhang, D. W.; Zhang, J. Z. H. J. Chem. Phys. 2003, 119, 3599), by which a macromolecule is partitioned into various capped fragments and conjugated caps formed by two adjacent caps. We find that the MFCC scheme, if corrected by the interaction between non-neighboring fragments, can be used to predict the total energy of large molecules only from energy calculations on a series of small subsystems. The approach, named as energy-corrected MFCC (EC-MFCC), computationally achieves linear scaling with the molecular size. Our test calculations on a broad range of medium- and large molecules demonstrate that this approach is able to reproduce the conventional HF and second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) energies within a few millihartree in most cases. With the EC-MFCC optimization algorithm described in this work, we have obtained the optimized structures of long oligomers of trans-polyacetylene and BN nanotubes with up to about 400 atoms, which are beyond the reach of traditional computational methods. In addition, the EC-MFCC approach is also applied to estimate the heats of formation for a series of organic compounds. This approach provides an appealing approach alternative to the traditional additivity rules based on either bond or group contributions for the estimation of thermochemical properties. Lightweight materials with high strength and long cyclic lifespan are greatly demanded in practical applications, yet these properties are usually mutually exclusive. Here, we present a strong, lightweight, highly deformation-tolerant, and fatigue-resistant carbon nanotube (CNT) composite enabled by an amorphous/crystalline heterophase carbon shell. In particular, we obtain nanocrystallites with CNT-induced crystalline orientation uniformly embedded within an amorphous matrix by controlled thermal annealing. The heterophase carbon shell effectively alleviates the stress concentration and inhibits crack propagation, which renders our composite superior mechanical properties and high fatigue resistance (10 6 compression cycles at 20% strain with high stress of 144 kPa, or 5 × 10 5 cycles at 50% strain with stress up to 260 kPa). This study provides a deep understanding of amorphous-crystalline phase transition and insight into utilizing phase engineering to design and develop other high-performance functional materials such as structural materials and catalysis.

2D MoS 2 attracts increasing attention for its application in flexible electronics and photonic devices. For 2D material optoelectronic devices, the light absorption of the molecularly thin 2D absorber would be one of the key limiting factors in device efficiency, and conventional photon management techniques are not necessarily compatible with them. In this study, we show two semimetal composite nanostructures deposited on 2D MoS 2 for synergistic photon management and strain-induced band gap engineering: (1) the pseudo-periodic Sn nanodots, (2) the conductive SnO x ( x < 1) core-shell nanoneedle structures. Without sophisticated nanolithography, both nanostructures are self-assembled from physical vapor deposition. Optical absorption enhancement spans from the visible to the near-infrared regime. 2D MoS 2 achieves >8× optical absorption enhancement at λ = 700-940 nm and 3-4× at λ = 500-660 nm under Sn nanodots, and 20-30× at λ = 700-900 nm under SnO x ( x < 1) nanoneedles. The enhanced absorption in MoS 2 results from strong near-field enhancement and reduced MoS 2 band gap due to the tensile strain induced by the Sn nanostructures, as confirmed by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Especially, we demonstrate that up to 3.5% biaxial tensile strain is introduced to 2D MoS 2 using conductive nanoneedle-structured SnO x ( x < 1), which reduces the band gap by ∼0.35 eV to further enhance light absorption at longer wavelengths. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a synergistic triple-functional photon management, stressor, and conductive electrode layer on 2D MoS 2 . Such synergistic photon management and band gap engineering approach for extended spectral response can be further applied to other 2D materials for future 2D photonic devices.

Relative energies and binding energies are crucial quantities that determine various molecular properties of ice and water. We developed a new effective method to compute those energies of bulk ice-liquid water systems. In this work, ten ice-liquid 144-mers and ten periodic ice-liquid (H 2 O) 64 systems are taken from the molecular dynamics simulations in the melting process of ice-Ih crystals. They are investigated at the levels of density functional theory (DFT), explicitly correlated second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2-F12), and coupled-cluster singles and doubles with noniterative triples corrections [CCSD(T)-F12b] in the framework of generalized energy-based fragmentation approach. Our results show that the changing of noncovalent interactions significantly influences the performances of DFT and electron correlation methods for those systems in the melting process of ice. Various DFT methods predict quite different results for ice and mixed ice-liquid structures but give similar results for pure liquid ones. It also explains why many DFT-based simulations lead to inaccurate densities of ice and liquid water. The CCSD(T)-F12b results suggest that the MP2-F12 method provides satisfactory results and is expected to be employed to simulate the phase transitions of ice crystal.

The synergistic combination of two or more chemotherapeutics frequently requires packaging in single delivery vehicles for the sequential release of each substance in a predictable manner. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that the rational engineering of a prodrug cocktail into single polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) can enable the sequential release of chemotherapeutics in a controllable manner. Exploiting combretastatin-A4 (CA4, 1) as a model antiangiogenesis agent, two ester derivatives, 2 and 3, tethered with saturated fatty acids (butanoic and heptanoic acid for 2 and 3, respectively) were synthesized. 7-Ethyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin (SN38) derivative 4, esterified with α-linolenic acid, was used as a cytotoxic drug. Because of their augmented lipophilicity and miscibility, all constructed prodrugs readily assembled with clinically approved polymeric matrices. Results showed that altering the aliphatic chains of modifiers for CA4 chemical derivatization enabled the drug retention capacity within particle systems to be adjusted, leading to the identification of the prodrug cocktail of 2 and 4 as an optimal combination for subsequent preclinical studies. Furthermore, in vivo assessements indicated that the resulting NPs simultaneously formulating 2 and 4 exhibited synergistic activities and outperformed NPs loaded with individual prodrugs 2 or 4 in terms of therapeutic efficacy. These findings highlight a novel and versatile strategy for tailoring chemically disparate prodrug cocktails for adaptation within a single nanoplatform as a potential modality for synergistic cancer therapy.

The generalized energy-based fragmentation (GEBF) approach for molecular crystals with periodic boundary condition (PBC) (denoted as PBC-GEBF) is extended to allow vibrational spectra of molecular crystals to be easily computed at various theory levels. Within the PBC-GEBF approach, the vibrational frequencies of a molecular crystal can be directly evaluated from molecular quantum chemistry calculations on a series of nonperiodic molecular systems. With this approach, the vibrational spectra of molecular crystals can be calculated with much reduced computational costs at various theory levels, as compared to those required by the methods based on periodic electronic structure theory. By testing the performance of the PBC-GEBF method for two molecular crystals (CO2 and imidazole), we demonstrate that the PBC-GEBF approach can reproduce the results of the methods based on periodic electronic structure theory in predicting vibrational spectra of molecular crystals. We apply the PBC-GEBF method at second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (PBC-GEBF-MP2 in short) to investigate the vibrational spectra of the urea and ammonia borane crystals. Our results show that the PBC-GEBF-MP2 method can provide quite accurate descriptions for the observed vibrational spectra of the two systems under study.

Anomeric sulfonium ions are attractive glycosyl donors for the stereoselective installation of 1,2-cis glycosides. Although these donors are receiving increasing attention, their mechanism of glycosylation remains controversial. We have investigated the reaction mechanism of glycosylation of a donor modified at C-2 with a (1S)-phenyl-2-(phenylsulfanyl)ethyl chiral auxiliary. Preactivation of this donor results in the formation of a bicyclic β-sulfonium ion that after addition of an alcohol undergoes 1,2-cis-glycosylation. To probe the importance of the thiophenyl moiety, analogs were prepared in which this moiety was replaced by an anisoyl or benzyl moiety. Furthermore, the auxiliaries were installed as S- and R-stereoisomers. It was found that the nature of the heteroatom and chirality of the auxiliary greatly influenced the anomeric outcome and only the one containing a thiophenyl moiety and having S-configuration gave consistently α-anomeric products. The sulfonium ions are sufficiently stable at a temperature at which glycosylations proceed indicating that they are viable glycosylation agents. Time-course NMR experiments with the latter donor showed that the initial rates of glycosylations increase with increases in acceptor concentration and the rate curves could be fitted to a second order rate equation. Collectively, these observations support a mechanism by which a sulfonium ion intermediate is formed as a trans-decalin ring system that can undergo glycosylation through a bimolecular mechanism. DFT calculations have provided further insight into the reaction path of glycosylation and indicate that initially a hydrogen-bonded complex is formed between sulfonium ion and acceptor that undergoes SN2-like glycosylation to give an α-anomeric product., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

The chemical synthesis of an orthogonally protected trisaccharide derived from the polysaccharide of Staphylococcus aureus Type 5, which is an attractive candidate for the development of immunotherapies, is described. The challenging α-fucosylation and β-mannosylation are addressed through the careful choice of protecting groups. Lactamization of a β-D-ManpNAcA moiety during deprotection was avoided by a late stage oxidation approach. Versatility of the trisaccharide was demonstrated by its transformation into a spacer-containing repeating unit suitable for immunological investigations.

We extend the generalized energy-based fragmentation (GEBF) approach to molecular crystals under periodic boundary conditions (PBC), and we demonstrate the performance of the method for a variety of molecular crystals. With this approach, the lattice energy of a molecular crystal can be obtained from the energies of a series of embedded subsystems, which can be computed with existing advanced molecular quantum chemistry methods. The use of the field compensation method allows the method to take long-range electrostatic interaction of the infinite crystal environment into account and make the method almost translationally invariant. The computational cost of the present method scales linearly with the number of molecules in the unit cell. Illustrative applications demonstrate that the PBC-GEBF method with explicitly correlated quantum chemistry methods is capable of providing accurate descriptions on the lattice energies and structures for various types of molecular crystals. In addition, this approach can be employed to quantify the contributions of various intermolecular interactions to the theoretical lattice energy. Such qualitative understanding is very useful for rational design of molecular crystals.

Four electron-donor-substituted aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compounds, N,N'-bis(4-methoxylsalicylidene)-p-phenylenediamine (BSPD-OMe), N,N'-bis(4-methylsalicylidene)-p-phenylenediamine (BSPD-Me), N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-p-phenylenediamine (BSPD), and N,N'-bis(4-hydroxylsalicylidene)-p-phenylenediamine (BSPD-OH), are designed and synthesized. They are all found to exhibit controlled self-assembly behaviors and good thermal properties. By changing the terminal electron-donor groups, they are controlled to self-assemble into three emission colors (green, yellow, and orange) and four morphologies (microblocks, microparticles, microrods, and nanowires) in THF/water mixtures. Their self-assembled structures were investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fluorescent microscopy images, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) techniques. In addition, the emission colors of BSPD-OH can be successfully controlled to three colors (green → yellow → orange) through simply changing the water fraction (fw). Their thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicate that their thermal decomposition temperatures (Td, corresponding to 5% weight loss) range from 282 to 319 °C. Their differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data show that BSPD-OH bears a glass-transition temperature (Tg) of 118 °C. The good Td and Tg values will ensure them to be luminogens for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The theoretical calculations and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of BSPD-OMe and BSPD suggest that the stronger electron donor substituent can twist the molecular conformation, decrease the degree of π conjugation, increase the energy gap, and then induce the emission colors' blue shift and morphology variation. The results are meaningful in controlling the emission colors and self-assembly shapes of these derivatives, and they also provide a novel but facile way to get color-tunable AIE luminogens for OLEDs.

The development of selectively protected monosaccharide building blocks that can reliably be glycosylated with a wide variety of acceptors is expected to make oligosaccharide synthesis a more routine operation. In particular, there is an urgent need for the development of modular building blocks that can readily be converted into glycosyl donors for glycosylations that give reliably high 1,2-cis-anomeric selectivity. We report here that 1,2-oxathiane ethers are stable under acidic, basic, and reductive conditions making it possible to conduct a wide range of protecting group manipulations and install selectively removable protecting groups such as levulinoyl (Lev) ester, fluorenylmethyloxy (Fmoc)- and allyloxy (Alloc)-carbonates, and 2-methyl naphthyl ethers (Nap). The 1,2-oxathiane ethers could easily be converted into bicyclic anomeric sulfonium ions by oxidization to sulfoxides and arylated with 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene. The resulting sulfonium ions gave high 1,2-cis-anomeric selectivity when glycosylated with a wide variety of glycosyl acceptors including properly protected amino acids, primary and secondary sugar alcohols and partially protected thioglycosides. The selective protected 1,2-oxathianes were successfully employed in the preparation of a branched glucoside derived from a glycogen-like polysaccharide isolated form the fungus Pseudallescheria boydii , which is involved in fungal phagocytosis and activation of innate immune responses. The compound was assembled by a latent-active glycosylation strategy in which an oxathiane was employed as an acceptor in a glycosylation with a sulfoxide donor. The product of such a glycosylation was oxidized to a sulfoxide for a subsequent glycosylation. Aberrant glycosylation of α-dystroglycan (α-DG) results in loss of interactions with the extracellular matrix and is central to the pathogenesis of several disorders. To examine protein glycosylation of α-DG, a facile synthetic approach has been developed for the preparation of unusual phosphorylated O-mannosyl glycopeptides derived from α-DG by a strategy in which properly protected phospho-mannosides are coupled with a Fmoc protected threonine derivative, followed by the use of the resulting derivatives in automated solid-phase glycopeptide synthesis using hyper-acid-sensitive Sieber amide resin. Synthetic efforts also provided a reduced phospho-trisaccharide, and the NMR data of this derivative confirmed the proper structural assignment of the unusual phospho-glycan structure. The glycopeptides made it possible to explore factors that regulate the elaboration of critical glycans. It was established that a glycopeptide having a 6-phospho-O-mannosyl residue is not an acceptor for action by the enzyme POMGnT1, which attaches β(1,2)-GlcNAc to O-mannosyl moietes, whereas the unphosphorylated derivate was readily extended by the enzyme. This finding implies a specific sequence of events in determining the structural fate of the O-glycan. It has also been found that the activity of POMGnT1 is dependent on the location of the acceptor site in the context of the underlying polypeptide/glycopeptide sequence. Conformational analysis by NMR has shown that the O-mannosyl modification does not exert major conformational effect on the peptide backbone. It is, however, proposed that these residues, introduced at the early stages of glycoprotein glycosylation, have an ability to regulate the loci of subsequent O-GalNAc additions, which do exert conformational effects. The studies show that through access to discrete glycopeptide structures, it is possible to reveal complex regulation of O-glycan processing on α-DG that has significant implications both for its normal post-translational maturation, and the mechanisms of the pathologies associated with hypoglycosylated α-DG.

The spatial orbital formulations of block correlated coupled cluster (BCCC) theory with a general CASSCF reference function (CAS-BCCC in short) is derived and an efficient implementation of this approach at the four-block correlation level (abbreviated CAS-BCCC4) is reported. We have applied the CAS-BCCC4 approach to investigate energy barriers for several reactions (the ring-opening isomerization of the cyclopropyl radical, cyclobutene, cyclobutadiene, and bicyclo[3.1.0]hex-2-ene), spectroscopic constants in several multibond diatomic molecules (C(2), O(2), CO, and N(2)), and singlet-triplet gaps in two diradicals (trimethylenemethane and oxyallyl). A comparison of CAS-BCCC4 results with the experimental data or other theoretical estimates shows that the present approach can provide very satisfactory descriptions for all the studied systems.

The generalized energy-based fragmentation (GEBF) approach (Li, W.; Li, S.; Jiang, Y. J. Phys. Chem. A 2007, 111, 2193) is extended for geometry optimizations and vibrational spectra calculations of general large molecules or clusters. In this approach, the total energy and its derivatives, and some molecular properties, of a target system are obtained from conventional calculations on a series of subsystems derived from the target system. Each subsystem is electronically embedded in the background point charges generated by all other atoms outside the subsystem so that the long-range interactions and polarization effects between remote fragments are approximately taken into account. The approach computationally scales linearly with the system size and can be easily implemented for large-scale parallelization. By comparing the results from the conventional and GEBF calculations for several test molecules including a polypeptide and a water cluster, we demonstrate that the GEBF approach is able to provide quite reliable predictions for molecular geometries, vibrational frequencies, and thermochemistry data and satisfactory descriptions for vibrational intensities, for general molecules with polar or charged groups.

The spatial orbital formulations of block-correlated coupled cluster (BCCC) theory with a complete active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) reference function and its efficient implementation is presented. In the present implementation, the cluster operator is truncated to the four-block correlation level, and the CASSCF(2,2) reference function is assumed (thus, the method is abbreviated as CAS-BCCC4). We have applied this method to investigate the spectroscopic constants in seven single-bond diatomic molecules (LiH, HF, HCl, Li(2), F(2), ClF, and Cl(2)) and the singlet-triplet gaps in a series of typical diradicals, including carbon, oxygen, and silicon atoms, methylene (CH(2)) and its isovalent species (NH(2)(+), SiH(2), and PH(2)(+)), and three benzyne isomers. A comparison of our results with the experimental data or other theoretical estimates shows that the present approach can provide quantitative descriptions for all of the studied systems.

[reaction: see text] A series of new chiral C(3)-symmetric tris(beta-hydroxy phosphoramide) ligands have been synthesized via the reaction of trisphosphoramide ester and Grignard reagents. The catalytic asymmetric borane reduction of ketones with these new C(3)-symmetric chiral tris(beta-hydroxy phosphoramide)s was investigated. Structurally well-defined, recoverable ligand 1d is an efficient catalyst for the enantioselective borane reduction of both electron-deficient and electron-rich ketones, and high enantioselectivities were achieved (up to 98% ee).

A series of new chiral C3-symmetric tris(beta-hydroxy amide) ligands have been synthesized via the reaction of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic chloride and optically pure amino alcohols (up to 96% yield). The asymmetric catalytic alkynylation of aldehydes with these new C3-symmetric chiral tris(beta-hydroxy amide) ligands and Ti (O(i)'Pr)4 was investigated. Ligand 4c synthesized from (1R,2S)-(-)-2-amino-1,2-diphenylethanol is effective for the enantioselective alkynylation of various aldehydes, and high enantioselectivity was obtained with aromatic aldehydes and alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde (up to 92% ee).

[reaction: see text] C(2)-symmetric tridentate bis(oxazoline) and bis(thiazoline) ligands with a diphenylamine backbone have been investigated in the catalytic asymmetric Henry reaction of alpha-keto esters with different Lewis acids. Their Cu(OTf)(2) complexes furnished S enantiomers, while Et(2)Zn complexes afforded R enantiomers, both of them with higher enantioselectivities (up to 85% ee). Reversal of enantioselectivity in asymmetric Henry reactions was achieved with the same chiral ligand by changing the Lewis acid center from Cu(II) to Zn(II). The results show that the NH group in C(2)-symmetric tridentate chiral ligands plays a very important role in controlling both the yields and enantiofacial selectivity of the Henry products.

Supercritical CO2 can be used to separate oxygenated compounds from essential oils. This technique still cannot replace vacuum distillation as an industrial process because of low recoveries and inconsistent results. In the present work, a comparison between the two methods was made in terms of composition, recovery, and color. Vacuum distillation and supercritical CO2 are complementary processes for producing high quality oxygenated compounds with high recovery rates. The former is more suitable for removing monoterpenes at low fraction temperatures (< or =308 K), and the latter is more suitable for separating oxygenated compounds from pigments and waxes. Consequently, the two methods were combined. For supercritical CO2 fractionation, the parameters of pressure, temperature gradient, and the ratio of solvent to feed were investigated for the fractionation of oxygenated compounds with high recoveries (> or =85%) and without other macromolecules, such as pigments and waxes.
