It has been possible to make a detailed study of photoinduced charge separation, photoconductivity and photovoltaic properties of p-Pyr-V2+-Me and p-Pyr-V2+-H in the solid-state. The photoinduced formation of long-lived charge-separated species was revealed.

Research is presented describing the use of 15N and 13C calorimetric, crystallographic and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to investigate the phase transitions and polymorphism in 2-(2,4-dinitrobenzyl)-3-methylpyridine.

The photoinduced charge separation and subsequent transport under an external electric field is studied in the poly[bipyridine/(phenylene-vinylene)] derivatives having vinylene subunits separating the bipyridylene vinylene skeleton. The result reveals that the facile electric-field-induced separation of the electron-hole pair.

The effect of environmental factors in the control of proton transfer processes in the crystalline systems of 2-(2,4-dinitrobenzyl)-3-methylpyridine was determined through induction of proton-transfer reactions in a crystalline environment. A formation of a blue-green colored NH tautomer was indictated following exposure of the crystals to near-UV radiation. The product exhibited an unusual monoexponential decay secondary to the difference in thermal stability of the two different NH species.

A systematic study of trends in the lipophilicity of prominent representatives of the opioid family, including natural, semisynthetic, synthetic, and endogenous neuropeptide opioids, is described. This was enabled by a straightforward 1 H NMR-based log P / D determination method developed for compounds holding at least one aromatic hydrogen atom. Moreover, the new method enables a direct simultaneous log D determination of opioid mixtures, overcoming the high sensitivity of this family to the measurement conditions, which is critical when a determination of the exact Δlog D values of matched pairs is required. Interpretation of the experimental Δlog D 7.4 values of selected matched pairs, focusing inter alia on the 3-OMe and 14-OMe motifs in morphinan opioids, is suggested with the aid of DFT calculations and may be useful for the discovery of new opioid therapeutics.

Systematically studying the lipophilicity of phosphorus compounds is of great importance for many chemical and biological fields and particularly for medicinal chemistry. Here, we report on the study of trends in the lipophilicity of a wide set of phosphorus compounds relevant to drug design including phosphates, thiophosphates, phosphonates, thiophosphonates, bis-phosphonates, and phosphine chalcogenides. This was enabled by the development of a straightforward log P determination method for phosphorus compounds based on 31 P-NMR spectroscopy. The log P values measured ranged between -3.2 and 3.6, and the trends observed were interpreted using a DFT study of the dipole moments and by H-bond basicity (p K HB ) measurements of selected compounds. Clear signal separation in 31 P-NMR spectroscopy grants the method high tolerability to impurities. Moreover, the wide range of chemical shifts for the phosphorus nucleus (250 to -250 ppm) enables a direct simultaneous log P determination of phosphorus compound mixtures in a single shake-flask experiment and 31 P-NMR analysis.

Modulation of the H-bond basicity (p K HB ) of various functional groups (FGs) by attaching fluorine functions and its impact on lipophilicity and bioisosterism considerations are described. In general, H/F replacement at the α-position to H-bond acceptors leads to a decrease of the p K HB value, resulting, in many cases, in a dramatic increase in the compounds' lipophilicity (log  P o/w ). In the case of α-CF 2 H, we found that these properties may also be affected by intramolecular H-bonds between CF 2 H and the FG. A computational study of ketone and sulfone series revealed that α-fluorination can significantly affect overall polarity, charge distribution, and conformational preference. The unique case of α-di- and trifluoromethyl ketones, which exist in octanol/water phases as ketone, hemiketal, and gem-diol forms, in equilibrium, prevents direct log  P o/w determination by conventional methods, and therefore, the specific log  P o/w values of these species were determined directly, for the first time, using Linclau's 19 F NMR-based method.

The first steps in the gas-phase decomposition mechanism of N3,N6-bis (1 H-tetrazol-5-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine-3,6-diamine, BTATz, anions and the kinetic isotope effects in these processes were studied using combined multistage mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and computational techniques. Two major fragmentation processes, the exergonic loss of nitrogen molecules and the endergonic loss of hydrazoic acid, were identified. The observation of a primary isotope effect supported by calculations suggests that the loss of a nitrogen molecule from the tetrazole ring involves proton migration, either to or within the terazole ring, as a rate-determining step. The fragmentation of a hydrazoic acid occurs through an asymmetrical retro-pericyclic reaction. Calculations show the relevance of these mechanisms to neutral BTATz. Our findings may contribute to the understanding of decomposition routes in these nitrogen-rich energetic materials and allow tailoring their reactivity and decomposition pathways for better control of performance.

3-(3-Ethoxymethyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-3-(1-ethoxymethyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-3H-benzo[de]isochromen-1-one, 4, is a novel photoinduced electron transfer (PET) chemosensor that becomes fluorescent upon binding metal ions and shows a strong preference toward Zn(II) ions. The new bisimidazol PET sensor and its zinc complex were prepared and characterized in terms of their crystal structures, absorption and emission spectra, and orbital energy diagrams. Free 4 is a weakly luminescent species. On the basis of detailed DFT calculations, we suggest that the poor luminescence yield of free 4 originates from its orbital structure in which two pi-orbitals of the two imidazole rings, HOMO and HOMO-1, are situated between two pi-orbitals of the isochromene-one system, HOMO-2 and LUMO. The absorption and emission processes occur between the two pi-orbitals of the isochromene-one system, HOMO-2 and LUMO, and the two pi-imidazole orbitals serve as quenchers for the excited state of the molecule through nonradiative processes. Upon binding Zn(II) ions, 4 becomes a highly luminescent species having a luminescence maximum peaking at 375 nm (lambda(ex) = 329 nm). The significant 900-fold enhancement in luminescence upon binding of the Zn(II) ions is attributed to the stabilization of the pi-orbitals of the imidazole rings upon their engagement in new bonds with the zinc ion. The affinity of 4 to zinc ions in acetonitrile is found to be very high, Ka > 3 x 10(6) M(-1), while with other metals ions, the association constants are considerably weaker.

Genes of interest can be selectively metallized via the incorporation of modified triphosphates. These triphosphates bear functions that can be further derivatized with aldehyde groups via the use of click chemistry. Treatment of the aldehyde-labeled gene mixture with the Tollens reagent, followed by a development process, results in the selective metallization of the gene of interest in the presence of natural DNA strands.

A new pi-conjugated electroactive 4,4'-bipyridinium that bears two pyridazone self-complementary units was prepared and characterized. The new system readily assembles and forms at least two stable charge-transfer crystalline structures having a thermal population of unpaired electrons. The crystals of one phase exhibit electrical bistability, displaying either high (ON) and low (OFF) conductivity, at the same applied bias, depending on the electrical history of the system. The relation between the supramolecular structure of the crystals and their electrical properties is also discussed.

The enolpyridine, OH-ketoenamime, NH equilibrium in crystals of 1,3-bis(pyridin-2-yl)propan-2-one was studied using temperature-dependent single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The relative population of the different tautomers was found to be sensitive to the temperature in the range of 100-300 K, illustrating the small thermodynamic difference between these two tautomers. This energy resemblance is partially attributed to the molecular packing in the crystal, where the molecules are arranged in the form of dimers. Ab initio electronic energy calculations (HF/6-31G** and MP2/6-31G**) reveal the effect of dimerization in the crystal on the electronic energy levels. Several tautomeric states were identified in the dimer of 1,3-bis(pyridin-2-yl)propan-2-one. A model is proposed in which four of these dimer states are populated in the crystal at ambient temperatures. The crystallographic data were treated according to this four-state dimer model, suggesting that the free energy of the OH-NH dimers is higher than that of the OH-OH dimers by 120 +/- 10 cal mol(-1) and that the NH-NH dimers are yet higher in free energy by 50 +/- 10 cal mol(-1).
