The popularity of intelligent and green electronic devices means that the use of renewable mechanical energy has gradually become an inevitable choice for social development. However, it is difficult for the existing energy harvesters to meet the requirement for efficient collection of discrete mechanical energy due to the limitation of traditional two-dimensional (2D) film deformation. In this research, a green and convenient supercritical carbon dioxide foaming (Sc-CO2)-assisted selective laser sintering method was developed, and piezoelectric energy harvesters with a 3D porous structure of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/barium titanate (BaTiO3) were successfully constructed. The 3D structure combined with the porous structure made full use of the normal space, amplified the stress-strain effect, and improved the piezoelectric output capability. Under the synergistic effect of BaTiO3, the foams exhibited high output with an output voltage of 20.9 V and a current density of 0.371 nA/mm2, which exceeded most of the known PVDF/BaTiO3 energy harvesters, and the prepared piezoelectric energy harvester could directly light up 11 green light-emitting diodes and charge a 1 μF commercial capacitor to 4.98 V within 180 s. This work emphasizes the key role of 3D printing and Sc-CO2 foaming in fabricating 3D piezoelectric energy harvesters.

Nowadays, heavy metal pollution has attracted wide attention. Many electrochemical methods have been developed to detect heavy metal ions. The electrode surface usually needs to be modified, and the process is complicated. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of electrodes by direct laser sintering on commercial polymer films. The prepared porous carbon electrodes can be used directly without any modification. The electrodes were fixed in a 3D-printed flow reactor, which led to very little analyte required during the detection process. The velocities of the analyte under stirring and flowing conditions were simulated numerically. The results prove that flow detection is more conducive to improving detection sensitivity. The limit of detection is about 0.0330 mg/L for Pb2+. Moreover, the electrode has been proved to have good repeatability and stability.

The 1,3-diaryl-β-carboline derivatives, including 3,4-dihydro variants, were synthesized via a multiple-step approach. These compounds possess rigid and twisted configurations, which are expected to exhibit unique optical properties. The absorption and fluorescence properties of the newly synthesized compounds were investigated. These synthetic 1,3-diaryl-β-carbolines displayed strong emission in the range of 387-409 nm and exhibited absolute photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 74%. Density functional theory calculations were performed to better elucidate the geometric, electronic, and optical properties of these novel 1,3-diaryl-β-carbolines.

The coupling agent TESPT (bis-[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl] tetrasulfide) was modified by substituting polyisoprenyl (PI) carbanions for the ethoxyl groups on silicon for increasing the interaction of rubber with its fillers. The modification was carried out by the reaction of TESPT with polyisoprenyllithium, which had been previously prepared by anionic polymerization of isoprene using butyllithium. The success of the substitution was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and the molecular weight of the modified TESPT (PI-TESPT) was determined from gel permeation chromatography measurements. The effects of tethered PI, as well as of its chain length, on the mechanical and dynamic properties of rubber compounds were examined using a universal testing machine and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). In rubber sample preparation, the amount of PI3-TESPT (PI of 2900 g/mol) used in rubber compounding is equal to that of the reference sample with TESPT (STESPT). For SPI-TESPT samples, the amounts of PI6-TESPT (PI of 5500 g/mol) and PI14-TESPT (PI of 13,700 g/mol) used were calculated as molar ethoxyl groups which are nearly equivalent to those of PI3-TESPT. At the same wt % (parts per hundred, phr) of elemental sulfur in rubber compounds, despite the order of cross-linking density being STESPT (sample prepared with TESPT) > SPI3-TESPT > SPI6-TESPT > SPI14-TESPT, the exhibited tensile strength is of the order of SPI3-TESPT > SPI6-TESPT > STESPT ≈ SPI14-TESPT. The better mechanical properties of SPI3-TESPT, as opposed to those of STESPT, could be attributed to the extra reinforcement from the PI–rubber chain linkage and better silica dispersion, as suggested by the mixing torque and Payne effect (ΔG′) measurements. While the dynamic properties of SPI3-TESPT are inferior to those of STESPT, these properties can be improved by adding more elemental sulfur to increase the cross-linking density.

The mechanisms of cellular absorption and transport underlying the differences between flavonoid aglycones and glycosides and the effect of the structural feature are not well established. In this study, aglycone, mono-, and diglycosides of quercetin and cyanidin were selected to examine the effects of the structural feature on the bioavailability of flavonoids using hexose transporters SGLT1 and GLUT2 in a Caco-2 BBe1 cell model. Cellular uptake and transport of all glycosides were significantly different. The glycosides also significantly inhibited cellular uptake of d-glucose, indicating the involvement of the two hexose transporters SGLT1 and GLUT2 in the absorption, and the potential of the glycosides in lowering the blood glucose level. The in silico prediction model also supported these observations. The absorption of glycosides, especially diglycosides but not the aglycones, was significantly blocked by SGLT1 and GLUT2 inhibitors (phloridzin and phloretin) and further validated in SGLT1 knockdown Caco-2 BBe1 cells.

Zeolites are microporous crystalline materials widely used in catalysis and adsorption applications. The fabrication of zeolite thin films and membranes has also opened up the possibility of using zeolites in electronic devices and membrane separations. The existing approach to growing zeolite films involves exposing the substrate to a high-pH environment; however, this process is applicable to only specific types of substrates. Our group has developed the direct wet deposition of zeolites via ultrasonic nozzle spray deposition to address this issue; however, the relationship between wetting properties and thin-film quality has yet to be investigated. In this study, we prepared zeolite CHA (Si:Al:P = 3:10:20) suspensions using different solvents and surfactants in various concentrations. We then examined the relationships among the composition of the cast solution, their wetting behavior on the glass substrate, and the uniformity of the resulting thin films. We found that using ethanol as a solvent with zeolite crystals in low concentrations with added surfactant yielded zeolite films of high quality. We were also able to produce low-haze zeolite coatings on glass. The zeolite coatings with high hydrophilicity and adsorption capacity presented excellent antifogging capability.

Hierarchical structures in shell with transition metal underneath is a promising design for high-performance and low-cost heterogeneous nanocatalysts (NCs). Such a design enables the optimum extent of synergetic effects in NC surface. It facilitates intermediate reaction steps and, therefore, boosts activity of NC in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, carbon nanotube (CNT)-supported ternary metallic NC comprising Cucluster-in-Pdcluster nanocrystal and surface decoration of atomic Pt clusters (14 wt %) is synthesized by using the wet chemical reduction method with sequence and reaction time controls. By annealing in H2 environment (H2/N2 = 9:1, 10 sccm) at 600 K for 2 h, specific activity of Cu@Pd/Pt is substantially improved by ∼2.0-fold as compared to that of the pristine sample and commercial Pt catalysts.
