We report a strategy that combines supramolecular assemblyandsolvent annealing to manipulate the microdomain orientation in blockcopolymer thin films. In supramolecular thin films formed by polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) with3-pentadecylphenol (PDP) hydrogen-bonded onto P4VP blocks, where PSblocks phase-separate into cylindrical microdomains, we found thatthe orientation of PS cylinders can be controlled by using differenttypes of solvents to anneal the films. As films are annealed underthe vapors of solvents bearing no oxygen atoms, such as chloroform,PS cylinders are perpendicular to the surface, while under those ofsolvents bearing oxygen, such as THF, PS cylinders are parallel tothe surface. Furthermore, the orientation is switchable upon the alternateuse of different types of solvents. The 1H NMR measurementsshowed that the strengths of hydrogen bonds between PDP and P4VP aregreatly weakened in oxygen-bearing solvents due to the competitionof the highly electronegative oxygen atoms. We thus suggest that thebinding capability of PDP onto P4VP is the key to determine whetherthe supramolecules can be assembled in the vapors of different typesof solvents, which in turn, regulates the orientation of PS cylinders. The cathodic limit of the electrochemical window in the second-generation ionic liquids (composed of air- and water-stable metal-free cations and anions) is traditionally believed to be determined by the reduction of the cation. More and more exceptions, however, were found in various ionic liquids. In this study, the cathodic limit of the electrochemical window in 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium salicylate ionic liquid (BMP-SAL IL) was studied. It has been found that the cathodic limit of BMP-SAL is determined by the reduction of SAL(-) anion rather than the reduction of BMP(+) cation. The cyclic voltammetric behavior, NMR spectra, and MALDI-TOF MS spectra of BMP-SAL recorded before and after the IL was electrolyzed at the cathodic limit provide sufficient evidence that the major reaction at the cathodic limit of BMP-SAL is the reduction of SAL(-) anion. The theoretical calculations support the experimental data, and the results indicate that anion reduction dominated cathodic limit should be a common phenomenon in ionic liquids.

The decarbonylation reaction of ferric carbonyl dicationic [Cp(2)Fe(2)(μ-SEt)(2)(CO)(2)](BF(4))(2) [1(BF(4))(2)] carried out in refluxing acetonitrile affords a binuclear iron-sulfur core complex [Cp(2)Fe(2)(μ-SEt)(2)(CH(3)CN)(2)](BF(4))(2) [2(BF(4))(2)] containing two acetonitrile coordinated ligands. The treatment of 2(BF(4))(2) with 2 equiv of the 1,4-diisocyanobenzene (1,4-CNC(6)H(4)NC) results in the formation of the diisocyanide complex [Cp(2)Fe(2)(μ-SEt)(2)(1,4-CNC(6)H(4)NC)(2)](BF(4))(2) [3(BF(4))(2)]. The rectangular tetranuclear iron thiolate aryldiisocyanide metallocyclophane complex [Cp(4)Fe(4)(μ-SEt)(4)(μ-1,4-CNC(6)H(4)NC)(2)](BF(4))(4) [4(BF(4))(4)] has been synthesized by a self-assembly reaction between equimolar amounts of 2(BF(4))(2) and 1,4-diisocyanobenzene or by a stepwise route involving mixing of a 1:1 molar ratio of complexes 2(BF(4))(2) and 3(BF(4))(2). Chemical reduction of 4(BF(4))(4) by KC(8) was observed to produce the reduction product 4(BF(4))(2). The spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of the iron-sulfur core complexes 1(PF(6))(2), 3(BF(4))(2), 4(BF(4))(4), and 4(BF(4))(2) were determined. Finally, differences between the redox control cavities of rectangular tetranuclear iron thiolate aryldiisocyanide complexes are revealed by a comparison of the X-ray crystallographically determined structures of complexes 4(BF(4))(4) and 4(BF(4))(2)., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)
