Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising stationary energy storage technology for leveling power supply from intermittent renewable energy sources with demand. A central objective for the development of practical, scalable RFBs is to identify affordable and high-performance redox-active molecules as storage materials. Herein, we report the design, synthesis, and evaluation of a new organic scaffold, indolo[2,3- b ]quinoxaline, for highly stable, low-reduction potential, and high-solubility anolytes for nonaqueous redox flow batteries (NARFBs). The mixture of 2- and 3-( tert -butyl)-6-(2-methoxyethyl)-6 H -indolo[2,3- b ]quinoxaline exhibits a low reduction potential (-2.01 V vs Fc/Fc + ), high solubility (>2.7 M in acetonitrile), and remarkable stability (99.86% capacity retention over 49.5 h (202 cycles) of H-cell cycling). This anolyte was paired with N -(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethyl)phenothiazine (MEEPT) to achieve a 2.3 V all-organic NARFB exhibiting 95.8% capacity retention over 75.1 h (120 cycles) of cycling.

Strategies to improve stretchability of polymer semiconductors, such as introducing flexible conjugation-breakers or adding flexible blocks, usually result in degraded electrical properties. In this work, we propose a concept to address this limitation, by introducing conjugated rigid fused-rings with optimized bulky side groups and maintaining a conjugated polymer backbone. Specifically, we investigated two classes of rigid fused-ring systems, namely, benzene-substituted dibenzothiopheno[6,5- b :6',5'- f ]thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene (Ph-DBTTT) and indacenodithiophene (IDT) systems, and identified molecules displaying optimized electrical and mechanical properties. In the IDT system, the polymer PIDT-3T-OC12-10% showed promising electrical and mechanical properties. In fully stretchable transistors, the polymer PIDT-3T-OC12-10% showed a mobility of 0.27 cm 2 V -1 s -1 at 75% strain and maintained its mobility after being subjected to hundreds of stretching-releasing cycles at 25% strain. Our results underscore the intimate correlation between chemical structures, mechanical properties, and charge carrier mobility for polymer semiconductors. Our described molecular design approach will help to expedite the next generation of intrinsically stretchable high-performance polymer semiconductors.

In recent years, ensuring the rational use and effective control of antibiotics has been a major focus in the eco-environment, which requires an effective monitoring method. However, on-site rapid detection of antibiotics in water environments remains a challenging issue. In this study, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used to systematically achieve selective, rapid, and highly sensitive detection of sulfonamides, based on their fingerprint characteristics. The results show that the trade-off between the competitive and coadsorption behaviors of target molecules and agglomerates (inorganic salts) on the surface of the SERS substrate determines whether the molecules can be detected with high sensitivity. Based on this, the qualitative differentiation and quantitative detection of three structurally similar antibiotics, sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, and sulfamethazine, were achieved, with the lowest detectable concentration being 1 μg/L for sulfadiazine and 50 μg/L for sulfamerazine and sulfamethazine.

In spectroscopic analysis, push-to-the-limit sensitivity is one of the important topics, particularly when facing the qualitative and quantitative analyses of the trace target. Normally, the effective recognition and extraction of weak signals are the first key steps, for which there has been considerable effort in developing various denoising algorithms for decades. Nevertheless, the lower the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the greater the deviation of the peak height and shape during the denoising process. Therefore, we propose a denoising algorithm along with peak extraction and retention (PEER). First, both the first and second derivatives of the Raman spectrum are used to determine Raman peaks with a high SNR whose peak information is kept away from the denoising process. Second, an optimized window smoothing algorithm is applied to the left part of the Raman spectrum, which is combined with the untreated Raman peaks to obtain the denoised Raman spectrum. The PEER algorithm is demonstrated with much better signal extraction and retention and successfully improves the temporal resolution of Raman imaging of a living cell by at least 1 order of magnitude higher than those by traditional algorithms.

Electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs) have become a topic of intense interest in recent years because of their great potential in electrochemical energy storage, electrocatalysis, and sensing applications. Most of the cMOFs reported hitherto are 2D structures, and 3D cMOFs remain rare. Herein we report FeTHQ, a 3D cMOF synthesized from tetrahydroxy-1,4-quinone (THQ) and iron(II) sulfate salt. FeTHQ exhibited a conductivity of 3.3 ± 0.55 mS cm -1 at 300 K, which is high for 3D cMOFs. The conductivity of FeTHQ is valence-dependent. A higher conductivity was measured with the as-prepared FeTHQ than with the air-oxidized and sodium naphthalenide-reduced samples.

This study aimed to explore the dynamic variations in the phenolic and volatile organic compounds of sugarcane vinegar subjected to different production processes. The determination of phenolic and volatile organic compounds was performed by UPLC-MS and solid phase micro extraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The complete fermentation process of sugarcane lasted nine days, and production of vinegar of up to 3.04% (w/v), total acids, and 4.1° alcoholicity was accomplished. Various phenolic compounds of sugarcane juice (non-sterilized) and those of alcoholic and acetic acid fermentation were obtained after nine days of fermentation. These were benzoic acid (2.024, 1.002, and 1.027 mg L -1 ), ferulic acid (0.060, 0.205, and 1.124 mg L -1 ), quinic acid (0.019, 0.074, and 0.031 mg L -1 ), chlorogenic acid (0.349, 1.635, and 1.217 mg L -1 ), apigenin (0.002, 0.099, and 0.004 mg L -1 ), kaempferol (0.003, 0.336, and 0.003 mg L -1 ), caffeic acid (-, 0.005, and 0.005 mg L -1 ), luteolin (0.003, 0.323, and 0.005 mg L -1 ), and p -coumaric acid (0.018, 0.015, and 0.027 mg L -1 ). Forty-five volatile organic compounds were also identified. Silicon (Si) plays an important role in the sustainable agriculture industry. The increasing demand for crop production with a significant reduction of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticide use is a big challenge nowadays. The use of Si has been proven to be an environmentally sound way of enhancing crop productivity by facilitating plant growth and development through either a direct or indirect mechanism, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. In particular, it has been investigated for its role in water stress management. The aim of the current experiment was to examine the protective role of Si in the photosynthetic capacity of different leaf segments and the ultrastructure of sugarcane ( Saccharum officinarm ) plants under water stress. Sugarcane cv. GT 42 plants were supplied with 0, 100, 300, and 500 mg L -1 Si and exposed for 60 days under each stress condition such as 100-95, 55-50, and 35-30% of field capacity. For the photosynthetic responses, each leaf was observed and separated into three equal parts (base, middle, and tip). We used intact leaves and were able to assess leaf photosynthetic responses. Under moderate and severe stress conditions, applied Si increased the photosynthesis (base, ∼16-143%; middle, 20-66%; and tip leaf part, 41-71%), transpiration rate (base, 15-97%; middle, 26-68%; and tip leaf part, 6-61%), and stomatal conductance (base, 26-137%; middle, 12-70%; and tip leaf part, 7-75%) in sugarcane plants. Ultrastructural examination of sugarcane leaves using scanning electron microscopy showed the remarkable effects on stomata ultrastructure. Silicon increased plant growth development, photosynthetic efficiency, and biomass/yield, and promoted better adaptation of stomata to drought. Oxidative side reaction is one of the major factors hindering the development of hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs). To avoid the oxidative toxicity, we designed and synthesized polydopamine-coated hemoglobin (Hb-PDA) nanoparticles via simple one-step assemblage without any toxic reagent. Hb-PDA nanoparticles showed oxidative protection of Hb by inhibiting the generation of methemoglobin (MetHb) and ferryl (Fe IV) Hb, as well as excellent antioxidant properties by scavenging free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Interestingly, the scavenging rate of Hb-PDA nanoparticles for ABTS + radical is at most 89%, while for DPPH radical it reaches 49%. In addition, Hb-PDA efficiently reduced the intracellular H 2 O 2 -induced ROS generation. Moreover, Hb-PDA nanoparticles exhibited high oxygen affinity, low effect on blood constituents, and low cytotoxicity. The results indicate that polydopamine-coated hemoglobin might be a promising approach for constructing novel oxygen carriers with the capacity to reduce oxidative side reaction.

In our effort to improve the efficiency and yield of xylose-to-ethanol bioconversion in Pichia stipitis, the transaldolase (TAL) in the pentose phosphate pathway was identified as a rate-limiting enzyme for improvement. A mutant containing the Q263R change was first obtained by directed evolution with 5-fold increase of activity, which was then incorporated into P. stipitesvia the pYDS vector to produce a genetically stable strain for fermentation on xylose. In comparison with the parental strain, TAL-Q263R(+) increases ethanol prodcution by 36% and 100% as measured by volumetric production rate and specific production rate, respectively. Thus improving the transaldolase activity in P. stipitis can significantly increase the rate and yield of xylose conversion to ethanol.

A recombinant mungbean defensin VrD1 was previously shown to exhibit antifungal and bruchid-resistant activity. To study the function and regulation of VrD1, genomic DNAs of plant defensins were isolated from Vigna radiata VC6089A and azuki bean Vigna angularis Kao Hsiung No. 6. The azuki bean defensin genomic DNA VaD1 was sequenced and converted to VaD1 cDNA. VaD1 defensin was purified from Vigna angularis Kao Hsiung No. 6 to apparent homogeneity. The complete amino acid sequence of the purified VaD1 was determined and was found to be exactly the same as the sequence deduced from VaD1 cDNA. VaD1 is a basic protein containing 46 amino acids with four conserved disulfide bonds and shares high sequence homology (78.3%) with VrD1. VaD1 inhibited the growth of Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. pisi, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Salmonella typhimurium. VaD1 also inhibited in vitro protein synthesis and bruchid larval development, but was less active than the recombinant VrD1.

It was shown previously that a bacterially expressed mungbean defensin VrCRP exhibited both antifungal and insecticidal activities. To isolate this protein in a large quantity for its characterization, the defensin cDNA was expressed in Pichia pastoris and the recombinant defensin (rVrD1) was purified. The recombinant VrD1 was shown to inhibit the growth of fungi such as Fusarium oxysporum, Pyricularia oryza, Rhizoctonia solani, and Trichophyton rubrum and development of bruchid larva. The protein also inhibits in vitro protein synthesis. These biological activities are similar to that of the bacterially expressed defensin. Functional expression of VrD1 in Pichia pastoris provides a highly feasible system to study the structure-function relationship of VrD1 using the mutagenesis approach.
