This study investigates the utilization of the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as a catalytic material for the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). PEDOT films doped with different counterions were electrodeposited on graphite foil. In particular, the mobile anion perchlorate and the polymeric ionomers polystyrenesulfonate, Nafion, and Aquivion were used. The electrocatalytic properties of PEDOT films were evaluated toward the TEMPO redox mediator in the absence and the presence of HMF as a substrate for oxidation reactions. The electrocatalytic HMF oxidation was confirmed to occur at PEDOT electrodes, and it was also found that the chemical nature of PEDOT counterions controls the electrocatalytic conversion of HMF by modulating the kinetics of the electrochemical generation of the oxoammonium cation TEMPO(+). Potentiostatic electrolysis experiments showed that both the reference graphite electrode and PEDOT substrates were able to convert HMF to FDCA with an 80% faradaic efficiency (FE) and a >90% yield (FDCA), but, compared to graphite, the complete conversion of HMF to FDCA required a ca. 30% shorter time when using PEDOT electrodes doped with perchlorate or Aquivion, thanks to their ability to sustain a higher current density in the initial phase of the electrolysis. In addition, while all PEDOT films were chemically stable under the electrochemical conditions herein described, only PEDOT films doped with Aquivion were also mechanically robust and stable against delamination. Thus, the new PEDOT/Aquivion composite may represent the best choice for the implementation of PEDOT-based electrodes in TEMPO-mediated electrocatalytic applications.

Supercapacitors offer notable properties as energy storage devices, providing high power density and fast charging and discharging while maintaining a long cycling lifetime. Although poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) has become a gold standard among organic electronics materials, researchers are still investigating ways to further improve its capacitive characteristics. In this work, we introduced Nafion as an alternative polymeric counterion to PSS to form highly capacitive PEDOT/Nafion; its advantageous supercapacitive properties were further improved by treatment with either dimethyl sulfoxide or ethylene glycol. Accordingly, electrochemical characterization of PEDOT/Nafion films revealed their high areal capacitance (22 mF cm -2 at 10 mV/s) and low charge transfer resistance (∼380 Ω), together with excellent volumetric capacitance (74 F cm -3 ), Coulombic efficiency (99%), and an energy density of 23.1 ± 1.5 mWh cm -3 at a power density of 0.5 W cm -3 , resulting from a more effective ion diffusion inside the conductive film, as confirmed by the results of spectroscopic studies. A proof-of-concept symmetric supercapacitor based on PEDOT/Nafion was characterized with a specific capacitance of approximately 15.7 F g -1 and impressive long-term stability (Coulombic efficiency ∼99% and capacitance ∼98.7% after 1000 charging/discharging cycles), overperforming the device based on PEDOT/PSS.

This research introduces a novel series of perfluorinated Zn(II) porphyrins with positive oxidation potentials designed as sensitizers for photoelectrosynthetic cells, with a focus on promoting the oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BzOH) mediated by the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidine N -oxyl (TEMPO) organocatalyst. Three dyes, CLICK-3 , CLICK-4 , and BETA-4 , are meticulously designed to explore the impact of substituents and their positions on the perfluorinated porphyrin ring in terms of redox potentials and energy level alignment when coupled with SnO 2 /TiO 2 -based photoanodes and TEMPO mediator. A comprehensive analysis utilizing spectroscopy, electrochemistry, photophysics, and computational techniques of the dyes in solution and sensitized thin films unveils an enhanced charge-separation character in the 4D-π-1A type BETA-4 . Incorporating four dimethylamino donor groups at the periphery of the porphyrin ring and a BTD-accepting linker at the β-pyrrolic position equips the structure with a more efficient donor-acceptor system. This enhancement ensures improved light-harvesting capacity, resulting in a doubled incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE% ≃30%) in the presence of LiI compared to meso -substituted dyes CLICK-3 and CLICK-4 . Sensitizing SnO 2 /TiO 2 thin films with BETA-4 successfully promotes the photooxidation of benzyl alcohol (BzOH) in the presence of the rapid TEMPO radical catalyst, yielding photocurrents of approximately 125 μA/cm 2 in an optimized TBPy/LiClO 4 /ACN electrolyte. Notably, when lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) replaces TBPy as the base for TEMPO-catalyzed BzOH oxidation, a remarkable photocurrent of around 800 μA/cm 2 is achieved, marking one of the highest values reported for this photoelectrochemical reaction to date. This study underscores that the proper functionalization of perfluorinated zinc porphyrins positions these dyes as ideal candidates for sensitizing SnO 2 /TiO 2 in the photodriven oxidation of BzOH. It also highlights the crucial role of carefully tuning electrolyte composition based on the electronic properties of molecular sensitizers.

PEDOT-based counter electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are generally prepared by electrodeposition, which produces polymer films endowed with the best electrocatalytic properties. This translates in fast regeneration of the redox mediator, which allows the solar cell to sustain efficient photoconversion. The sustainable fabrication of DSSCs must consider the scaling up of the entire process, and when possible, it should avoid the use of large amounts of hazardous and/or inflammable chemicals, such as organic solvents for instance. This is why electrodeposition of PEDOT-based counter electrodes should preferably be carried out in aqueous media. In this study, PEDOT/Nafion was electrodeposited on FTO and comparatively evaluated as a catalytic material in DSSCs based on either cobalt or copper electrolytes. Our results show that the electrochemical response of PEDOT/Nafion toward Co(II/III-) or Cu(I/II)-based redox shuttles was comparable to that of PEDOT/ClO 4 and significantly superior to that of PEDOT/PSS. In addition, when tested for adhesion, PEDOT/Nafion films were more stable for delamination if compared to PEDOT/ClO 4 , a feature that may prove beneficial in view of the long-term stability of solar devices., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2022 The Authors. Indole-decorated glycine derivatives are prepared through an environmentally benign cross-dehydrogenative coupling between N -aryl glycine analogues and indoles (yield of ≤81%). Merging heterogeneous organocatalysis and photocatalysis, C-H functionalization has been achieved by selective C-2 oxidation of N -aryl glycines to afford the electrophilic imine followed by Friedel-Crafts alkylation with indole. The sustainability of the process has been taken into account in the reaction design through the implementation of a metal-free recyclable heterogeneous photocatalyst and a green reaction medium. Scale-up of the benchmark reaction (gram scale, yield of 69%) and recycling experiments (over seven runs without a loss of efficiency) have been performed to prove the robustness of the protocol. Finally, mechanistic studies were conducted employing electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to unveil the roles of the photocatalyst and oxygen in the formation of odd-electron species.

The water dispersion of the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) is one of the most used material precursors in organic electronics also thanks to its industrial production. There is a growing interest for conductive polymers that could be alternative surrogates or replace PEDOT:PSS in some applications. A recent study by our group compared electrodeposited PEDOT:Nafion vs PEDOT:PSS in the use for neural recordings. Here, we introduce an easy and reproducible synthetic protocol to prepare a water dispersion of PEDOT:Nafion. The conductivity of the pristine material is on the order of 2 S cm -1 and was improved up to ≈6 S cm -1 upon treatment with ethylene glycol. Faster ion transfer was assessed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and, interestingly, an improved adhesion was observed for coatings of the new PEDOT:Nafion dispersion on glass substrates, even without the addition of the silane cross-linker needed for PEDOT:PSS. As proof of concept, we demonstrate the use of this novel water dispersion of PEDOT:Nafion in three different organic electronic device architectures, namely, an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT), a memristor, and an artificial synapse.

The electrochemical properties of both pristine single walled carbon nanohorns (SWCNHS) and their chemically oxidized form (ox-SWCNHS) spray coated onto fluorine doped SnO2 (FTO) were investigated in the framework of the fabrication of cobalt based transparent dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These new nanocarbon substrates, evaluated in conjunction with the Co(bpy)3(2+/3+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) redox mediator, are endowed with excellent electrocatalytic properties, ease of fabrication, and very promising stability and display a great potential for replacing the best noble metal and conductive polymer catalytic materials in the building of semitransparent counter electrodes in new generation photoelectrochemical devices.

A tetracoordinated redox couple, made by [Cu(2-mesityl-4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)2][PF6], 1, and its Cu(II) form [Cu(2-mesityl-4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)2][PF6]2, 2, has been synthesized, and its electrochemical and photochemical features have been investigated and compared with those of a previously published Cu(2+)/Cu(+) redox shuttle, namely, [Cu(2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)2][PF6], 3, and its pentacoordinated oxidized form [Cu(2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)2Cl][PF6], 4. The detrimental effect of the fifth Cl(-) ancillary ligand on the charge transfer kinetics of the redox shuttles has been exhaustively demonstrated. Appropriately balanced Cu-based electrolytes have been then formulated and tested in dye solar cells in combination with a π-extended benzothiadiazole dye. The bis-phenanthroline Cu-complexes, 1 and 2, have been found to provide an overall 4.4% solar energy conversion efficiency, which is more than twice that of the literature benchmark couple, 3 and 4, employing a Cl-coordinated oxidized species and even comparable with the performances of a I(-)/I3(-) electrolyte of analogous concentration. A fast counter-electrode reaction, due to the excellent electrochemical reversibility of 2, and a high electron collection efficiency, allowed through the efficient dye regeneration kinetics exerted by 1, represents two major characteristics of these copper-based electron mediators and may constitute a pivotal step toward the development of a next generation of copper-based efficient iodine-free redox shuttles.

A 1,2-bis(2-methylbenzothiophene-3-yl)maleimide model ( DAE) and two dyads in which this photochromic unit is coupled, via a direct nitrogen-carbon bond ( Ru-DAE) or through an intervening methylene group ( Ru-CH 2-DAE ), to a ruthenium polypyridine chromophore have been synthesized. The photochemistry and photophysics of these systems have been thoroughly characterized in acetonitrile by a combination of stationary and time-resolved (nano- and femtosecond) spectroscopic methods. The diarylethene model DAE undergoes photocyclization by excitation at 448 nm, with 35% photoconversion at stationary state. The quantum yield increases from 0.22 to 0.33 upon deaeration. Photochemical cycloreversion (quantum yield, 0.51) can be carried out to completion upon excitation at lambda > 500 nm. Photocyclization takes place both from the excited singlet state (S 1), as an ultrafast (ca. 0.5 ps) process, and from the triplet state (T 1) in the microsecond time scale. In Ru-DAE and Ru-CH 2-DAE dyads, efficient photocyclization following light absorption by the ruthenium chromophore occurs with oxygen-sensitive quantum yield (0.44 and 0.22, in deaerated and aerated solution, respectively). The photoconversion efficiency is almost unitary (90%), much higher than for the photochromic DAE alone. Efficient quenching of both Ru-based MLCT phosphorescence and DAE fluorescence is observed. A complete kinetic characterization has been obtained by ps-ns time-resolved spectroscopy. Besides prompt photocyclization (0.5 ps), fast singlet energy transfer takes place from the excited diarylethene to the Ru(II) chromophore (30 ps in Ru-DAE, 150 ps in Ru-CH 2-DAE ). In the Ru(II) chromophore, prompt intersystem crossing to the MLCT triplet state is followed by triplet energy transfer to the diarylethene (1.5 ns in Ru-DAE, 40 ns in Ru-CH 2-DAE ). The triplet state of the diarylethene moiety undergoes cyclization in a microsecond time scale. The experimental results are complemented with a combined ab initio and DFT computational study whereby the potential energy surfaces (PES) for ground state (S 0) and lowest triplet state (T 1) of the diarylethene are investigated along the reaction coordinate for photocyclization/cycloreversion. At the DFT level of theory, the transition-state structures on S 0 and T 1 are similar and lean, along the reaction coordinate, toward the closed-ring form. At the transition-state geometry, the S 0 and T 1 PES are almost degenerate. Whereas on S 0 a large barrier (ca. 45 kcal mol (-1)) separates the open- and closed-ring minima, on T 1 the barriers to isomerization are modest, cyclization barrier (ca. 8 kcal mol (-1)) being smaller than cycloreversion barrier (ca. 14 kcal mol (-1)). These features account for the efficient sensitized photocyclization and inefficient sensitized cycloreversion observed with Ru-DAE. Triplet cyclization is viewed as a nonadiabatic process originating on T 1 at open-ring geometry, proceeding via intersystem crossing at transition-state geometry, and completing on S 0 at closed-ring geometry. A computational study of the prototypical model 1,2-bis(3-thienyl)ethene is used to benchmark DFT results against ab initio CASSCF//CASPT2 results and to demonstrate the generality of the main topological features of the S 0 and T 1 PES obtained for DAE. Altogether, the results provide strong experimental evidence and theoretical rationale for the triplet pathway in the photocyclization of photochromic diarylethenes.
