Abstract

Quasielastic neutron scattering is used to probe the solid-state ligand dynamics in the coordination polymer Mn [N (CN)(sub 2)](sub 2)(pyz) {pyz = pyrazine} which has double-interpenetrating 3D lattices. The pyrazine ligand is seen to liberate in a deep potential in the low temperature monoclinic phase.

Abstract

The reaction between Cr[(CO).sub.6] and trimesic acid in presence of DMF was performed to obtain the metal-organic framework [Cr.sub.3][(BTC).sub.2]*nDMF ([BTC.sup.3-] = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate), which is isostructural to [Cu.sub.3][(BTC).sub.2]*3[H.sub.2]O. The infrared and X-ray absorption spectra offer insight into formation of an [O.sub.2] adduct with partial charge transfer from the [Cr.sup.II] centers exposed on the surface of the framework.

Abstract

A series of isostructural metal-organic framework frameworks of composition [[Cu.sub.2](L)[([H.sub.2]O).sub.2]] (L = tetracarboxylate ligands) (NOTT-nn) and their [H.sub.2] absorption properties are described. The correlation of the [H.sub.2] uptake capacity and heats of adsorption with pore metrics and the effects of functional groups on the ligands are examined.

Abstract

Neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques have shown that the metal-organic framework, MIL-53, has displayed a reversible structural transition between an open-pored and a closed-pored structure as a function of temperature without the presence of any guest molecules. The transition from the open to closed structure at low temperature has shown very slow kinetics.

Abstract

The construction and examination of a highly stable porous lanthanide metal-organic framework displaying highly selective sorption behaviors of hydrogen over nitrogen gas molecules for hydrogen storage are described. The studies have shown that an optimal pore size has strengthened the interactions between [H.sub.2] molecules with pore walls and has enhanced the hydrogen adsorption from the interaction between hydrogen molecules with the pore walls rather than with the open metal sites within the framework.

Abstract

Use of the tritopic bridging ligand 1,3,4-benzenestristetrazolate ([BTT.sup.3-]) facilitates formation of [[Mn(DMF)6]3[[(Mn4Cl).sub.3][(BTT).sub.8][([H.sub.2]O).sub.12].sub.2].42DMF.11[H.sub.2O].20[CH.sub.3]OH, featuring a porous metal-organic framework an unknown cubic topology. Crystals of the compound remain intact upon desolvation and show a total [H.sub.2] uptake of 6.9 wt % at 77 K and 90 bar, which at 60 g [H.sub.2]/L gives a storage density 85% of that of liquid hydrogen.

Abstract

The location of six [D.sub.2] binding sites in [Cu.sub.3] [(1,3,5,-benzenetricarboxylate).sub.2] ([Cu.sub.3(BTC).sub.2]) is revealed using neutron power diffraction and an intricate filling order of the framework is described. Direct structural evidence of the potential importance of metal sites to hydrogen storage is provided by the location of the primary site at the coordinative unsaturated Cu atoms.

Abstract

Quasi-elastic neutron scattering, binary solutions of water and fructose are studied from the dilute to concentrated regimes. The neutron scattering data based on the jump-diffusion model is consistent within a transition from continuous to hopping or jump diffusion at 29 wt percent fructose concentrations.

Abstract

Angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements on azafullerene solid (C59N)2 up to 22 GPa at room temperature showed a somewhat less compressible solid than pristine C60. The experiments were designed to probe the diversity of bonding interactions present in the material with pressure tuning of the intermolecular distances. The non-alignment of the C-C bridging bonds of the dimer with the unit cell axes explains the lack of strong anisotropy in the compressibility. However, faster compressibility of the interdimer distances is noted with increase in pressure, leading to a novel, high-pressure solid structure.
