In modern laser technologies, there is a need for coatings that would be compatible with flexible substrates while retaining the advantages of inorganic compounds in terms of robustness. As a first step in this direction, we developed here thin films of lanthanide oxysulfide, of optical quality, prepared by low-temperature dip coating. As a model compound in the family of oxysulfides, (Gd,Ce) 2 O 2 S anisotropic nanoplates were used. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and in situ UV and IR spectroscopic ellipsometry, showing that the band gap of the materials was preserved through the deposition process. The thickness of the films was tuned in a broad range, from a few nanometers to 150 nm, using different concentrations of the colloidal suspensions as well as single-layer and multilayer deposition. Lastly, thermal treatment of the thin films was optimized to remove the stabilizing organic ligands of the nanoparticles while preserving their integrity, as confirmed by SEM and XRD.

Herein is reported the preparation of nanostructured mesoporous supported films, in this case, titanium dioxide nanoparticles on silicon wafer, according to a new approach taking place in two consecutive deposition steps: (i) coating of a homogeneous and continuous layer of a surfactant on the selected support and (ii) building up of a second layer of the fresh metal-oxide gel precursor, followed by thermal treatment to generate porosity. This approach represents an alternative way to soft-template procedures, as for instance, the largely applied evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method, which typically consists of a single-step deposition of the mixture of gel precursor and surfactant used as a soft template to create porosity. The main advantage of the procedure reported here compared to the EISA method is the possibility of reaching tunable textural characteristics along the growing film (pore size, shape, and distribution of pores) by using gels with nanoparticles preformed at different stages via a simple regulation of the residence time of the precursors deposited on the support containing the surfactant.

Herein, we show that wetting properties such as giant wetting anisotropy and dynamic shaping can be observed when femtoliter (submicron scale) dew droplets are condensed on nanopatterned mildly hydrophilic surfaces. Large-scale, optically transparent, nanopatterned TiO 2 surfaces were fabricated by direct nanoimprinting lithography of sol-gel-derived films. Square, infinitely elongated, or circular droplets were obtained with square, line, or concentric patterns, respectively, and were visualized in situ during formation and recession using optical microscopy and environmental scanning electronic microscopy. We first describe how extremely elongated droplets could form on mildly hydrophilic surfaces, naturally contaminated in real environmental conditions. In this configuration, the dew droplet shape can be dynamically and reversibly varied by controlling the out-of-equilibrium conditions associated with condensation/evaporation kinetics. As an example of the application, we propose a "morphological" sensor that exploits the shape of the dew droplets as a transduction mode for detecting organic vapors in the outer atmosphere. Importantly, this study is underlining that environmentally stable, purely hydrophilic surfaces can be smartly engineered to induce wetting phenomena at very small scale never observed so far for hydrophobic or heterogeneous surfaces. Our versatile approach based on nanoimprinted, transparent sol-gel films could open great perspectives for the implementation of environmentally stable, mildly hydrophilic materials for "dew engineering" applications such as open microfluidics, fuming for fingerprints, vapor sensing, or water harvesting on glass windows, for instance.

Humidity is an efficient instrument for facilitating changes in local architectures of two-dimensional surfaces assembled from nanoscaled biomaterials. Here, complementary surface-sensitive methods are used to collect explicit and precise experimental evidence on the water vapor sorption into (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) oxidized cellulose nanofibril (CNF) thin film over the relative humidity (RH) range from 0 to 97%. Changes in thickness and mass of the film due to water vapor uptake are tracked using spectroscopic ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, respectively. Experimental data is evaluated by the quantitative Langmuir/Flory-Huggins/clustering model and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller model. The isotherms coupled with the quantitative models unveil distinct regions of predominant sorption modes: specific sorption of water molecules below 10% RH, multilayer build-up between 10 to 75% RH, and clustering of water molecules above 75% RH. The study reveals the sorption mechanisms underlying the well-known water uptake behavior of TEMPO oxidized CNF directly at the gas-solid interface.

The appearance of structural colors on coated-glass is a critical esthetical drawback toward industrialization of photocatalytic coatings on windows for architecture or automobile. Herein we describe a rational approach to suppress the structural color of mesoporous TiO 2 -based coatings preserving photoactivity and mechanical stiffness. Addition of SiO 2 as third component is discussed. Ti x Si (1-x) O 2 mesoporous coatings were fabricated by one-step liquid deposition process through the evaporation induced self-assembling and characterized by GI-SAXS, GI-WAXS, electron microscopies, and in situ Environmental Ellipsometry Porosimetry. Guided by optical simulation, we investigated the critical role of SiO 2 on the optical responses of the films but also on the structural, mechanical, and photocatalytic properties, important requirements to go toward real applications. We demonstrate that adding SiO 2 to porous TiO 2 allows tuning and suppression of structural colors through refractive index matching and up to 160% increase in mechanical stiffening of the films. This study leads us to demonstrate an example of "invisible" coating, in which the light reflection is angle- and thickness-independent, and exhibiting high porosity, mechanical stiffness, and photoactivity.

New fluorescent molecular liquids with a tetrazine core have been prepared. These compounds remain liquid at least down to -60 °C and display very low viscosities (28 mPa.s for liquid 1, 58 mPa.s for liquid 2). Both compounds remain fluorescent in the condensed phase. For liquid 1, intermolecular quenching is observed to a certain extent, whereas liquid 2 displays similar photophysical properties in dilute solution and in neat film.

Although gold nanoparticles stabilized by organic thiols are the building blocks in a wide range of applications, the role of the ligands on the plasmon resonance of the metal core has been mostly ignored until now. Herein, a methodology based on the combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and UV-vis spectroscopy is applied to extract dielectric functions of the different components. It is shown that aromatic thiols allow a significant charge transfer at the hybrid interface with the s and d bands of the gold core that yields "giant" red shifts of the plasmon band, up to 40 nm for spherical particles in the size range of 3-5 nm. These results suggest that hybrid nanoplasmonic devices may be designed through the suitable choice of metal core and organic components for optimized charge exchange.

In this work, unique functional devices exhibiting controlled gradients of properties are fabricated by dip-coating process in acceleration mode. Through this new approach, thin films with "on-demand" thickness graded profiles at the submillimeter scale are prepared in an easy and versatile way, compatible for large-scale production. The technique is adapted to several relevant materials, including sol-gel dense and mesoporous metal oxides, block copolymers, metal-organic framework colloids, and commercial photoresists. In the first part of the Article, an investigation on the effect of the dip coating speed variation on the thickness profiles is reported together with the critical roles played by the evaporation rate and by the viscosity on the fluid draining-induced film formation. In the second part, dip-coating in acceleration mode is used to induce controlled variation of functionalities by playing on structural, chemical, or dimensional variations in nano- and microsystems. In order to demonstrate the full potentiality and versatility of the technique, original graded functional devices are made including optical interferometry mirrors with bidirectional gradients, one-dimensional photonic crystals with a stop-band gradient, graded microfluidic channels, and wetting gradient to induce droplet motion.

The modification of the planar organic/inorganic interface of the hybrid light-emitting diodes by the addition of a tailored nanoporous crystalline metal oxide increases up to 1 order of magnitude the efficiency of the resulting devices. In this Letter, we present the preparation and characterization of the novel controlled 3D interface and discuss how the interaction between the metal oxide and the polymer at the interface results in such an improvement.

Monodisperse spherical hollow nanoparticles of mesoporous silica featuring mesopores with a radial orientation in the silica shell were synthesized via a dual-templating method. Specifically designed polystyrene latexes with anionic or cationic surface charges acted as the core templates, while cetyltrimethylammonium bromide served as a co-template to structure the mesopore formation during tetraethoxysilane hydrolysis/condensation. The particles were well-separated and presented homogeneous mesoporous silica shells. Average particle diameters were less than 200 nm, and the particles displayed high values of specific surface area and pore volume. The shell thickness and the hollow core diameter could be tuned independently while the radial pore structure was preserved. A detailed analysis of the nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms proved that the central cavity was completely isolated from the external medium, that is, only accessible through the radial mesopores of the shell. Consequently, our particles gather the advantages of a well-defined structure, straight penetrating channels across the silica shell, and a high accessible porous volume of the central core. These properties make them far better candidates than simple mesoporous particles for any storage and/or controlled release applications.
