Efficient O 2 reduction reaction (ORR) for selective H 2 O generation enables advanced fuel cell technology. Nonprecious metal catalysts are viable and attractive alternatives to state-of-the-art Pt-based materials that are expensive. Cu complexes inspired by Cu-containing O 2 reduction enzymes in nature are yet to reach their desired ORR catalytic performance. Here, the concept of mechanical interlocking is introduced to the ligand architecture to enforce dynamic spatial restriction on the Cu coordination site. Interlocked catenane ligands could govern O 2 binding mode, promote electron transfer, and facilitate product elimination. Our results show that ligand interlocking as a catenane steers the ORR selectivity to H 2 O as the major product via the 4e - pathway, rivaling the selectivity of Pt, and boosts the onset potential by 130 mV, the mass activity by 1.8 times, and the turnover frequency by 1.5 fold as compared to the noninterlocked counterpart. Our Cu catenane complex represents one of the first examples to take advantage of mechanical interlocking to afford electrocatalysts with enhanced activity and selectivity. The mechanistic insights gained through this integrated experimental and theoretical study are envisioned to be valuable not just to the area of ORR energy catalysis but also with broad implications on interlocked metal complexes that are of critical importance to the general fields in redox reactions involving proton-coupled electron transfer steps.

As a major class of mechanically interlocked molecules, not only are catenanes topologically intriguing targets that challenge the chemical synthesis to the efficient formation of mechanical bonds, but also the mechanical properties arising from the topology offer unique and attractive features for the development of novel functional molecular materials. Despite advancements in templated methods for different types of interlocked architectures, [ n]catenane possessing multiple numbers of interlocked macrocycles still remains a difficult synthetic target with very few reported examples. If the unique mechanical properties of catenanes are to be fully exploited, reliable, controllable, and efficient strategies for accessing [ n]catenanes will be necessary. In this Viewpoint, challenges, considerations, and strategies to [ n]catenanes are discussed.

Iron is an essential metal for living organisms, but misregulation of its homeostasis at the cellular level can trigger detrimental oxidative and/or nitrosative stress and damage events. Motivated to help study the physiological and pathological consequences of biological iron regulation, we now report a reaction-based strategy for monitoring labile Fe(2+) pools in aqueous solution and living cells. Iron Probe 1 (IP1) exploits a bioinspired, iron-mediated oxidative C-O bond cleavage reaction to achieve a selective turn-on response to Fe(2+) over a range of cellular metal ions in their bioavailable forms. We show that this first-generation chemical tool for fluorescence Fe(2+) detection can visualize changes in exchangeable iron stores in living cells upon iron supplementation or depletion, including labile iron pools at endogenous, basal levels. Moreover, IP1 can be used to identify reversible expansion of labile iron pools by stimulation with vitamin C or the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin, providing a starting point for further investigations of iron signaling and stress events in living systems as well as future probe development.

The discovery through dynamic combinatorial chemistry (DCC) of a new generation of donor-acceptor [2]catenanes highlights the power of DCC to access unprecedented structures. While conventional thinking has limited the scope of donor-acceptor catenanes to strictly alternating stacks of donor (D) and acceptor (A) aromatic units, DCC is demonstrated in this paper to give access to unusual DAAD, DADD, and ADAA stacks. Each of these catenanes has specific structural requirements, allowing control of their formation. On the basis of these results, and on the observation that the catenanes represent kinetic bottlenecks in the reaction pathway, we propose a mechanism that explains and predicts the structures formed. Furthermore, the spontaneous assembly of catenanes in aqueous dynamic systems gives a fundamental insight into the role played by hydrophobic effect and donor-acceptor interactions when building such complex architectures.

We describe here the assembly of new types of donor-acceptor [2]catenanes from dynamic combinatorial libraries (DCL) in water. These new catenanes contain both the donor and acceptor components in at least one of the interlocked rings, thereby possessing unusual and unexpected DAAD or DADD stacking sequences of the π units in their structures. The efficiency of the catenane assembly process can be enhanced by manipulating the DCL equilibrium in a variety of ways: adding a guest, changing the building block stoichiometries, or increasing the library concentration or the ionic strength of the solvent. The formation of catenanes and their constitutions are found to be dependent on subtle differences in the geometry, dimension, and flexibility of the donor building blocks.

Two donor-acceptor [2]catenanes have been synthesized and characterized from a single dynamic combinatorial library in water. One of these catenanes is different from earlier related interlocked molecules in that two donor units stack on each other in an unexpected order. Shifting the equilibrium by choosing the right conditions resulted in a significant increase in the yields of the individual catenanes.

The coordination chemistry of the N-substituted arylamido ligands [N(R)(C6H3R'2-2,6)] [R = SiMe3, R' = Me (L1); R = CH2But, R' = Pri (L2)] toward FeII and CoII ions was studied. The monoamido complexes [M(L1)(Cl)(tmeda)] [M = Fe (1), Co (2)] react readily with MeLi, affording the mononuclear, paramagnetic iron(II) and cobalt(II) methyl-arylamido complexes [M(L1)(Me)(tmeda)] [M = Fe (3), Co (4)]. Treatment of 2:1 [Li(L2)(THF)2]/FeCl2 affords the unusual two-coordinate iron(II) bis(arylamide) [Fe(L2)2] (5).
