We investigate applying 3D deep convolutional neural networks as fast surrogate models of the formation and feedback effects of primordial stars in hydrodynamic cosmological simulations of the first galaxies. Here, we present the surrogate model to predict localized primordial star formation; the feedback model will be presented in a subsequent paper. The star formation prediction model consists of two sub-models: the first is a 3D volume classifier that predicts which (10 comoving kpc)$^3$ volumes will host star formation, followed by a 3D Inception-based U-net voxel segmentation model that predicts which voxels will form primordial stars. We find that the combined model predicts primordial star forming volumes with high skill, with $F_1 >0.995$ and true skill score $>0.994$. The star formation is localized within the volume to $\lesssim5^3$~voxels ($\sim1.6$~comoving kpc$^3$) with $F_1>0.399$ and true skill score $>0.857$. Applied to simulations with low spatial resolution, the model predicts star forming regions in the same locations and at similar redshifts as sites in resolved full-physics simulations that explicitly model primordial star formation and feedback. When applied to simulations with lower mass resolution, we find that the model predicts star forming regions at later redshift due to delayed structure formation resulting from lower mass resolution. Our model predicts primordial star formation without halo finding, so will be useful in spatially under-resolved simulations that cannot resolve primordial star forming halos. Upcoming measurements of the highly redshifted 21cm line with next-generation radio telescopes such as HERA and SKA will provide the intriguing opportunity to probe dark matter (DM) physics during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), Cosmic Dawn, and the Dark Ages. With HERA already under construction, there is a pressing need to thoroughly understand the impact of DM physics on the intergalactic medium (IGM) during these epochs. We present first results of a hydrodynamic simulation suite with $2 \times 512^3$ particles in a $(100 \ h^{-1} \ \text{Mpc})^3$ box with DM annihilation and baryonic cooling physics. We focus on redshift $z \sim 11$, just before reionization starts in our simulations, and discuss the imprint of DM annihilation on the IGM and on structure formation. We find that whereas structure formation is not affected by thermal WIMPs heavier than $m_\chi \gtrsim 100 \ \text{MeV}$, heating from $\mathcal{O}$(GeV) DM particles may leave a significant imprint on the IGM that alters the 21cm signal. Cold gas in low density regions is particularly susceptible to the effects of DM heating. We explore the possibility that the recently detected black hole binary (BHB) merger event GW190521 originates from the first generation of massive, metal-free, so-called Population III (Pop III), stars. Based on improved binary statistics derived from N-body simulations of Pop III star clusters, we calculate the merger rate densities of Pop III BHBs similar to GW190521, in two evolution channels: classical binary stellar evolution and dynamical hardening in high-redshift nuclear star clusters. Both channels can explain the observed rate density. But the latter is favoured by better agreement with observation and less restrictions on uncertain parameters. Our analysis also indicates that given the distinct features of the two channels (with merger rates peaked at $z\lesssim2$ and $z\sim 10$, respectively), future observation of BHB mergers similar to GW190521 with third-generation gravitational wave detectors will greatly improve our knowledge of the evolution of Pop III BHBs, especially for their dynamics during cosmic structure formation., Comment: 6+4 pages, 3+3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL, with improved models for the dynamics of Pop III BHs/BHBs in NSC hosts

We used the mark weighted correlation functions (MCFs), $W(s)$, to study the large scale structure of the Universe. We studied five types of MCFs with the weighting scheme $\rho^\alpha$, where $\rho$ is the local density, and $\alpha$ is taken as $-1,\ -0.5,\ 0,\ 0.5$, and 1. We found that different MCFs have very different amplitudes and scale-dependence. Some of the MCFs exhibit distinctive peaks and valleys that do not exist in the standard correlation functions. Their locations are robust against the redshifts and the background geometry, however it is unlikely that they can be used as ``standard rulers'' to probe the cosmic expansion history. Nonetheless we find that these features may be used to probe parameters related with the structure formation history, such as the values of $\sigma_8$ and the galaxy bias. Finally, after conducting a comprehensive analysis using the full shapes of the $W(s)$s and $W_{\Delta s}(\mu)$s, we found that, combining different types of MCFs can significantly improve the cosmological parameter constraints. Compared with using only the standard correlation function, the combinations of MCFs with $\alpha=0,\ 0.5,\ 1$ and $\alpha=0,\ -1,\ -0.5,\ 0.5,\ 1$ can improve the constraints on $\Omega_m$ and $w$ by $\approx30\%$ and $50\%$, respectively. In the hierarchical structure formation model of the universe, galaxy clusters are assembled through a series of mergers. Accordingly, it is expected that galaxy clusters in the early universe are actively forming and dynamically young. Located at a high redshift of z=1.71, SpARCS1049+56 offers a unique look into the galaxy cluster formation process. This cluster has been shown to be rich in cluster galaxies and to have intense star formation. Its high redshift pushes a weak-lensing analysis beyond the regime of the optical spectrum into that of the infrared. Equipped with deep Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 UVIS and IR observations, we present a weak-lensing characterization of SpARCS1049+56. As few IR weak-lensing studies have been performed, we discuss the details of PSF modeling and galaxy shape measurement for an IR weak-lensing procedure and the systematics that come with the territory. It will be critical to understand these systematics in future weak-lensing studies in the IR with the next generation space telescopes such as JWST, Euclid, and WFIRST. Through a careful analysis, the mass distribution of this young galaxy cluster is mapped and the convergence peak is detected at a 3.3 sigma level. The weak-lensing mass of the cluster is estimated to be $3.5\pm1.2\times10^{14}\ \text{M}_\odot$ and is consistent with the mass derived from a mass-richness scaling relation. This mass is extreme for a cluster at such a high redshift and suggests that SpARCS1049+56 is rare in the standard $\Lambda$CDM universe., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, Accepted to ApJ

We present a statistical analysis of flybys of dark matter halos compared to mergers using cosmological $N$-body simulations. We mainly focus on gravitationally interacting target halos with mass of $10^{10.8}-10^{13.0}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$, and their neighbors are counted only when the mass ratio is 1:3$-$3:1 and the distance is less than the sum of the virial radii of target and neighbor. The neighbors are divided into the flyby or merger samples if the pair's total energy is greater or smaller, respectively, than the capture criterion with consideration of dynamical friction. The main results are as follows: (a) The flyby fraction increases by up to a factor of 50 with decreasing halo mass and by up to a factor of 400 with increasing large-scale density, while the merger fraction does not show any significant dependencies on these two parameters; (b) The redshift evolution of the flyby fraction is twofold, increasing with redshift at $01$, while the merger fraction increases monotonically with redshift at $z=0\sim4$; (c) The multiple interactions with two or more neighbors are on average flyby-dominated, and their fraction has a mass and environment dependence similar to that for the flyby fraction; (d) Given that flybys substantially outnumber mergers toward $z=0$ (by a factor of five) and the multiple interactions are flyby-dominated, the flyby's contribution to galactic evolution is stronger than ever at the present epoch, especially for less massive halos and in the higher density environment. The relationship between galaxies and the state/chemical enrichment of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) expected to dominate the baryon budget at low-z provides sensitive constraints on structure formation and galaxy evolution models. We present a deep redshift survey in the field of 1ES1553+113, a blazar with a unique combination of UV+X-ray spectra for surveys of the circum-/intergalactic medium (CGM/IGM). Nicastro et al. 2018 reported the detection of two O VII WHIM absorbers at $z=0.4339$ and $0.3551$ in its spectrum, suggesting that the WHIM is metal-rich and sufficient to close the missing baryons problem. Our survey indicates that the blazar is a member of a $z=0.433$ group and that the higher-$z$ O VII candidate arises from its intragroup medium. The resulting bias precludes its use in baryon censuses. The $z=0.3551$ candidate occurs in an isolated environment 630 kpc from the nearest galaxy (with stellar mass $\log M_*/M_\odot \approx 9.7$) which we show is unexpected for the WHIM. Finally, we characterize the galactic environments of broad H I Ly$\alpha$ absorbers (Doppler widths of $b=40-80$ \kms; $T\lesssim4\times10^5$ K) which provide metallicity independent WHIM probes. On average, broad Ly$\alpha$, absorbers are ${\approx}2\times$ closer to the nearest luminous ($L>0.25 L_*$) galaxy (700 kpc) than narrow ($b, Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters; 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table with the full version available on the journal webpage (or by request); v2 corrects one reference

A challenging requirement posed by next-generation observations is a firm theoretical grasp of the impact of baryons on structure formation. Cosmological hydrodynamic simulations modeling gas physics are vital in this regard. A high degree of modeling flexibility exists in this space making it important to explore a range of methods in order to gauge the accuracy of simulation predictions. We present results from the first cosmological simulation using Conservative Reproducing Kernel Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (CRK-SPH). We employ two simulations: one evolved purely under gravity and the other with non-radiative hydrodynamics. Each contains 2x2304^3 cold dark matter plus baryon particles in an 800 Mpc/h box. We compare statistics to previous non-radiative simulations including power spectra, mass functions, baryon fractions, and concentration. We find self-similar radial profiles of gas temperature, entropy, and pressure and show that a simple analytic model recovers these results to better than 40% over two orders of magnitude in mass. We quantify the level of non-thermal pressure support in halos and demonstrate that hydrostatic mass estimates are biased low by 24% (10%) for halos of mass 10^15 (10^13) Msun/h. We compute angular power spectra for the thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects and find good agreement with the low-l Planck measurements. Finally, artificial scattering between particles of unequal mass is shown to have a large impact on the gravity-only run and we highlight the importance of better understanding this issue in hydrodynamic applications. The chemical separation of Li+ ions induced by a magnetic field during the hierarchical structure formation can reduce initial Li abundances in cosmic structures. It is shown that cosmological reionization of neutral Li atoms quickly completes as soon as the first star is formed. Since almost all Li is singly ionized during the main course of structure formation, it can efficiently separate from gravitationally collapsing neutral gas. The separation is more efficient in smaller structures which formed earlier. In the framework of the hierarchical structure formation, extremely metal-poor stars can have smaller Li abundances because of their earlier formations. It is found that the chemical separation by a magnetic field thus provides a reason that Li abundances in extremely metal-poor stars are lower than the Spite plateau and have a large dispersion as well as an explanation of the Spite plateau itself. In addition, the chemical separation scenario can explain Li abundances in NGC 6397 which are higher than the Spite plateau. The standard self-similar model of galaxy cluster formation predicts that the X-ray luminosity-temperature ($L_X$-$T_X$) relation of galaxy clusters should have been $L_X\propto T_X^2$ in absence of the baryonic physics, such as radiative cooling and feedback from stars and black holes. However, this baseline relation is predicted without considering the fact that the halo concentration and the characteristic density of clusters increases as their mass decreases, which is a consequence of hierarchical structure formation of the universe. Here, we show that the actual baseline relation should be $L_X\propto T_X^\alpha$, where $\alpha\sim 1.7$, instead of $\alpha=2$, given the mass dependence of the concentration and the fundamental plane relation of galaxy clusters. Numerical simulations show that $\alpha\sim 1.6$, which is consistent with the prediction. We also show that the baseline luminosity-mass ($L_X$-$M_\Delta$) relation should have been $L_X\propto M_\Delta^\beta$, where $\beta\sim 1.1$-1.2, in contrast with the conventional prediction ($\beta=4/3$). In addition, some of the scatter in the $L_X$-$M_\Delta$ relation can be attributed to the scatter in the concentration-mass ($c$-$M$) relation. The confirmation of the shallow slope could be a proof of hierarchical clustering. As an example, we show that the new baseline relations could be checked by studying the temperature or mass dependence of gas mass fraction of clusters. Moreover, the highest-temperature clusters would follow the shallow baseline relations if the influences of cool cores and cluster mergers are properly removed., Comment: Matches the version to appear in ApJ

Wave dark matter (WaveDM) has recently gained attention as a viable candidate to account for the dark matter content of the universe. In this paper we explore the extent to which, and under what conditions, dark matter halos in this model are able to reproduce strong-lensing systems. First, we explore analytically the lensing properties of the model, finding that a pure WaveDM density profile, the soliton profile, produces a weaker lensing effect than similar cored profiles. Then, we analyze models with a soliton embedded within a Navarro, Frenk, and White (NFW) profile, as has been found in numerical simulations of structure formation. We use a benchmark model with a boson mass of ma = 10−22 eV, for which we see that there is a bimodality in the contribution of the external NFW part of the profile, and some of the free parameters associated with it are not well constrained. We find that for configurations with boson masses 10−23 to 10−22 eV, a range of masses preferred by dwarf galaxy kinematics, the soliton profile alone can fit the data, but its size is incompatible with the luminous extent of the lens galaxies. Likewise, boson masses of the order of 10−21 eV, which would be consistent with Lyα constraints and consist of more compact soliton configurations, necessarily require the NFW part in order to reproduce the observed Einstein radii. We then conclude that lens systems impose a conservative lower bound ma > 10−24 eV and that the NFW envelope around the soliton must be present to satisfy the observational requirements.

We present a systematic study of the cosmic variance that existed in the formation of first stars and galaxies. We focus on the cosmic variance induced by the large-scale density and velocity environment engraved at the epoch of recombination. The density environment is predominantly determined by the dark-matter overdensity, and the velocity environment by the dark matter-baryon streaming velocity. Toward this end, we introduce a new cosmological initial condition generator BCCOMICS, which solves the quasi-linear evolution of small-scale perturbations under the large-scale density and streaming-velocity environment and generates the initial condition for dark matter and baryons, as either particles or grid data at a specific redshift. We also describe a scheme to simulate the formation of first galaxies inside density peaks and voids, where a local environment is treated as a separate universe. The resulting cosmic variance in the minihalo number density and the amount of cooling mass are presented as an application. The majority of hydrogen in the interstellar medium (ISM) is in atomic form. The transition from atoms to molecules and, in particular, the formation of the H$_2$ molecule, is a key step in cosmic structure formation en route to stars. Quantifying H$_2$ formation in space is difficult, due to the confusion in the emission of atomic hydrogen (HI) and the lack of a H$_2$ signal from the cold ISM. Here we present the discovery of a rare, isolated dark cloud currently undergoing H$_2$ formation, as evidenced by a prominent "ring" of HI self-absorption. Through a combined analysis of HI narrow self-absorption, CO emission, dust emission, and extinction, we directly measured, for the first time, the [HI]/[H$_2$] abundance varying from 2% to 0.2%, within one region. These measured HI abundances are orders of magnitude higher than usually assumed initial conditions for protoplanetary disk models. None of the fast cloud formation model could produce such low atomic hydrogen abundance. We derived a cloud formation timescale of 6$\times$10$^6$ years, consistent with the global Galactic star formation rate, and favoring the classical star formation picture over fast star formation models. In hierarchical models of large-scale structure formation, most galaxies grow in clusters, where merging is an essential, if not dominant process. Understanding the merger process is greatly aided by examples in the vicinity of the Milky Way due to the availability of high quality positional and kinematic data. The Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy at a distance of 25 kpc is a prime example. Detailed observations of stars in this dwarf galaxy and its associated tidal streams also provide a unique probe of the gravitational field of the Milky Way. To fully utilize this probe requires not only excellent observations but also accurate models of the merging event. We investigate the recent history of the Sagittarius Dwarf with the smoothed particle hydrodynamics/N-body GADGET-2 code, treating both the Milky Way and the dwarf galaxy as a particle system. In addition to considerations of particle number, gravitational softening, stability criteria such as Toomre Q parameter, and angular momentum transport, we add the distinction between static and dynamic potential differences as another aspect that deserves consideration. We find that the commonly employed approximation of a static Milky Way potential induces changes in the orbit corresponding to position changes on the sky of order 0.5°-1°. The weak dependence of the results on the live versus static Milky Way model justify the use of static potentials in situations which do not require very high positional accuracy.

Studying the nature and origin of the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) is an outstanding problem of cosmology. Measuring Faraday rotation would be a promising method to explore the IGMF in the large-scale structure (LSS) of the universe. We investigated the Faraday rotation measure (RM) due to the IGMF in filaments of galaxies using simulations for cosmological structure formation. We employed a model IGMF based on turbulence dynamo in the LSS of the universe; it has an average strength of $< B > \sim 10$ nG and a coherence length of several $\times\ 100\ h^{-1}$ kpc in filaments. With the coherence length smaller than path length, the inducement of RM would be a random walk process, and we found that the resultant RM is dominantly contributed by the density peak along line of sight. The rms of RM through filaments at the present universe was predicted to be $\sim 1\ {\rm rad\ m^{-2}}$. In addition, we predicted that the probability distribution function of $|{\rm RM}|$ through filaments follows the log-normal distribution, and the power spectrum of RM in the local universe peaks at a scale of $\sim 1\ h^{-1}$ Mpc. The orientation of galaxy spin vectors within the large scale structure has been considered an important test of our understanding of structure formation. We investigate the angular changes of galaxy spin vectors in clusters - denser environments than are normally focused upon, using hydrodynamic zoomed simulations of 17 clusters YZiCS and a set of complementary controlled simulations. The magnitude by which galaxies change their spin vector is found to be a function of their rotational support with larger cumulative angular changes of spin vectors when they have initially lower $V_{\theta}/\sigma$. We find that both mergers and tidal perturbations can significantly swing spin vectors, with larger changes in spin vector for smaller pericentre distances. Strong tidal perturbations are also correlated with the changes in stellar mass and specific angular momentum of satellite galaxies. However, changes in spin vector can often result in a canceling out of previous changes. As a result, the integrated angular change is always much larger than the angular change measured at any instant. Also, overall the majority of satellite galaxies do not undergo mergers or sufficiently strong tidal perturbation after infall into clusters, and thus they end up suffering little change to their spin vectors. Taken as a whole, these results suggest that any signatures of spin alignment from the large scale structure will be preserved in the cluster environment for many gigayears., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We studied how the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) affects the propagation of super-GZK protons that originate from extragalactic sources within the local GZK sphere. Toward this end, we set up hypothetical sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays (UHECRs), virtual observers, and the magnetized cosmic web in a model universe constructed from cosmological structure formation simulations. We then arranged a set of reference objects mimicking active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the local universe, with which correlations of simulated UHECR events are analyzed. With our model IGMF, the deflection angle between the arrival direction of super-GZK protons and the sky position of their actual sources is quite large with the mean value of $ \sim 15^{\circ}$ and the median value of $\tilde \theta \sim 7 - 10^{\circ}$. On the other hand, the separation angle between the arrival direction and the sky position of nearest reference objects is substantially smaller with $ \sim 3.5 - 4^{\circ}$, which is similar to the mean angular distance in the sky to nearest neighbors among the reference objects. This is a direct consequence of our model that the sources, observers, reference objects, and the IGMF all trace the matter distribution of the universe. The result implies that extragalactic objects lying closest to the arrival direction of UHECRs are not necessary their actual sources. With our model for the distribution of reference objects, the fraction of super-GZK proton events, whose closest AGNs are true sources, is less than 1/3. We present a large X-ray selected serendipitous cluster survey based on a novel joint analysis of archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data. The survey provides enough depth to reach clusters of flux of $\approx 10^{-14} {ergs} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$ near $z$ $\approx$ 1 and simultaneously a large enough sample to find evidence for the strong evolution of clusters expected from structure formation theory. We detected a total of 723 clusters of which 462 are newly discovered clusters with greater than 6$\sigma$ significance. In addition, we also detect and measure 261 previously-known clusters and groups that can be used to calibrate the survey. The survey exploits a technique which combines the exquisite Chandra imaging quality with the high throughput of the XMM-Newton telescopes using overlapping survey regions. A large fraction of the contamination from AGN point sources is mitigated by using this technique. This results in a higher sensitivity for finding clusters of galaxies with relatively few photons and a large part of our survey has a flux sensitivity between $10^{-14}$ and $10^{-15} {ergs} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$. The survey covers 41.2 square degrees of overlapping Chandra and XMM-Newton fields and 122.2 square degrees of non-overlapping Chandra data. We measure the log N-log S distribution and fit it with a redshift-dependent model characterized by a luminosity distribution proportional to $e^{-\frac{z}{z_0}}$. We find that $z_0$ to be in the range 0.7 to 1.3, indicative of rapid cluster evolution, as expected for cosmic structure formation using parameters appropriate to the concordance cosmological model., Comment: 16 pages, 26 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We use time-varying models of the coupled evolution of the HI, H_2 gas phases and stars in galaxy-sized numerical simulations to: a) test for the emergence of the Kennicutt-Schmidt (K-S) and the H_2-pressure relation, b) explore a realistic H_2-regulated star formation recipe which brings forth a neglected and potentially significant SF-regulating factor, and c) go beyond typical galactic environments (for which these galactic empirical relations are deduced) to explore the early evolution of very gas-rich galaxies. In this work we model low mass galaxies ($M_{\rm baryon} \le 10^9 \msun$), while incorporating an independent treatment of CO formation and destruction, the most important tracer molecule of H2 in galaxies, along with that for the H2 gas itself. We find that both the K-S and the H_2-pressure empirical relations can robustly emerge in galaxies after a dynamic equilibrium sets in between the various ISM states, the stellar component and its feedback. A large amount of observations have constrained cosmological parameters and the initial density fluctuation spectrum to a very high accuracy. However, cosmological parameters change with time and the power index of the power spectrum varies with mass scale dramatically in the so-called concordance Lambda CDM cosmology. Thus, any successful model for its structural evolution should work well simultaneously for various cosmological models and different power spectra. We use a large set of high-resolution N-body simulations of a variety of structure formation models (scale-free, standard CDM, open CDM, and Lambda CDM) to study the mass accretion histories (MAHs), the mass and redshift dependence of concentrations and the concentration evolution histories of dark matter halos. We find that there is significant disagreement between the much-used empirical models in the literature and our simulations. According to two simple but tight correlations we find from the simulation results, we develop new empirical models for both the MAHs and the concentration evolution histories of dark matter halos, and the latter can also be used to predict the mass and redshift dependence of halo concentrations. These models are accurate and universal: the same set of model parameters works well for different cosmological models and for halos of different masses at different redshifts and the model predictions are highly accurate even when the histories are traced to very high redshift. Merging compact binaries are the one source of gravitational radiation so far identified. Because short-period systems which will merge in less than a Hubble time have already been observed as binary pulsars, they are important both as gravitational wave sources for observatories such as LIGO but also as progenitors for short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs). The fact that these systems must have large systemic velocities implies that by the time they merge, they will be far from their formation site. The locations of merging sites depend sensitively on the gravitational potential of the galaxy host, which until now has been assumed to be static. Here we refine such calculations to incorporate the temporal evolution of the host's gravitational potential as well as that of its nearby neighbors using cosmological simulations of structure formation. This results in merger site distributions that are more diffusively distributed with respect to their putative hosts, with locations extending out to distances of a few Mpc for lighter halos. The degree of mixing between neighboring compact binary populations computed in this way is severely enhanced in environments with a high number density of galaxies. We find that SGRB redshift estimates based solely on the nearest galaxy in projection can be very inaccurate, if progenitor systems inhere large systematic kicks at birth., 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

NGC 1407 is the central elliptical in a nearby evolved galaxy group apparently destined to become a cluster core. We use the kinematics of globular clusters to probe the dynamics and mass profile of the group's center, out to 60 kpc (~10 R_eff) -- the most extended data set to date around an early-type galaxy. This sample consists of 172 GC velocities, most of them newly obtained using Keck/DEIMOS, with a few additional objects identified as DGTOs or as IGCs. We find weak rotation in the GC system's outer parts, with the metal-poor and metal-rich GCs misaligned. The RMS velocity profile declines rapidly to a radius of ~20 kpc, and then becomes flat or rising to ~60 kpc. There is evidence that the GC orbits have a tangential bias that is strongest for the metal-poor GCs -- possibly contradicting theoretical expectations. We construct cosmologically-motivated galaxy+dark halo dynamical models and infer a mass within 60 kpc of ~3x10^12 M_Sun, extrapolating to a virial mass of ~6x10^13 M_Sun for a typical LCDM halo -- in agreement with results from group galaxy kinematics. We present an independent Chandra-based analysis, whose relatively high mass at ~20 kpc disagrees strongly with the GC-based result unless the GCs are assumed to have a peculiar orbit distribution, and we discuss some general comparisons between X-ray and optical results. The group's B-band mass-to-light ratio of ~800 is extreme even for a rich galaxy cluster, much less a poor group -- placing it among the most dark matter dominated systems in the universe, and also suggesting a massive reservoir of baryons lurking in an unseen phase, in addition to the nonbaryonic dark matter. An alternative bosonic dark matter model is examined in detail via high-resolution simulations. These bosons have particle mass of order $10^{-22}eV$ and are non-interacting. If they do exist and can account for structure formation, these bosons must be condensed into the Bose-Einstein state and described by a coherent wave function. This matter, also known as Fuzzy Dark Matter (Hu, Barkana & Gruzinov 2000),, is speculated to be able, first, to eliminate the sub-galactic halos to solve the problem of over-abundance of dwarf galaxies, and, second, to produce flat halo cores in galaxies suggested by some observations. Our simulation results show that although this extremely light bosonic dark matter indeed suppresses low-mass halos, it can, to the contrary of expectation, yield singular halo cores. The density profile of the singular halo is almost identical to the halo profile of Navarro, Frenk & White (1997). Such a profile seems to be universal, in that it can be produced via either accretion or merger., 21 pages, 10 figures

The first, self-consistent calculations of the cosmological H_2 dissociating UV background produced during the epoch of reionization (EOR) by the sources of reionization are presented. Large-scale radiative transfer simulations of reionization trace the impact of all the ionizing starlight on the IGM from all the sources in our simulation volume down to dwarf galaxies of mass ~ 10^8 solar mass, identified by very high-resolution N-body simulations, including the self-regulating effect of IGM photoheating on dwarf galaxy formation. The UV continuum emitted below 13.6 eV by each source is then transferred through the same IGM, attenuated by atomic H Lyman series resonance lines, to predict the evolution of the inhomogeneous background in the Lyman-Werner band of H_2 between 11 and 13.6 eV., Comment: First Stars III Conference Proceedings; This is a summarized version of the journal paper to be submitted soon

Modeling the structure formation in the universe, we extend the spherical collapse model in the context of MOND starting with the linear Newtonian structure formation followed by the MONDian evolution. In MOND the formation of structures speed up without a need for dark matter. Starting with the top-hat over-dense distribution of the matter, the structures virialize with a power--law profile of the distribution of matter. We show that the virialization process takes place gradually from the center of the structure to the outer layers. In this scenario the smaller structures enter to the MONDian regime earlier and evolve faster, hence they are older than larger structures. We also show that the virialization of the structures occur in the MONDian regime, in which the smaller structures have stronger gravitational acceleration than the larger ones. This feature of the dynamical behavior of the structures is in agreement with this fact that the smaller structures as the globular clusters or galactic bulges have been formed earlier and need less dark matter in CDM scenario., 23 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepted

The first stars in the universe form inside $\sim 10^6 M_\odot$ dark matter (DM) haloes whose initial density profiles are laid down by gravitational collapse in hierarchical structure formation scenarios. During the formation of the first stars in the universe, the baryonic infall compresses the dark matter further. The resultant dark matter density is presented here, using an algorithm originally developed by Young to calculate changes to the profile as the result of adiabatic infall in a spherical halo model; the Young prescription takes into account the non-circular motions of halo particles. The density profiles obtained in this way are found to be within a factor of two of those obtained using the simple adiabatic contraction prescription of Blumenthal et al. Our results hold regardless of the nature of the dark matter or its interactions and rely merely on gravity. If the dark matter consists of weakly interacting massive particles, which are their own antiparticles, their densities are high enough that their annihilation in the first protostars can indeed provide an important heat source and prevent the collapse all the way to fusion. In short, a ``Dark Star'' phase of stellar evolution, powered by DM annihilation, may indeed describe the first stars in the universe., 14 pages, 3 figures, and 1 table

We present new results characterizing cosmological shocks within adaptive mesh refinement N-Body/hydrodynamic simulations that are used to predict non-thermal components of large-scale structure. This represents the first study of shocks using adaptive mesh refinement. We propose a modified algorithm for finding shocks from those used on unigrid simulations that reduces the shock frequency of low Mach number shocks by a factor of ~3. We then apply our new technique to a large, (512 Mpc/h)^3, cosmological volume and study the shock Mach number (M) distribution as a function of pre-shock temperature, density, and redshift. Because of the large volume of the simulation, we have superb statistics that results from having thousands of galaxy clusters. We find that the Mach number evolution can be interpreted as a method to visualize large-scale structure formation. Shocks with Mach20 generally follow accretion onto filaments and galaxy clusters, respectively. By applying results from nonlinear diffusive shock acceleration models using the first-order Fermi process, we calculate the amount of kinetic energy that is converted into cosmic ray protons. The acceleration of cosmic ray protons is large enough that in order to use galaxy clusters as cosmological probes, the dynamic response of the gas to the cosmic rays must be included in future numerical simulations., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, Accepted to ApJ, minor changes made

(Abridged) We conduct a series of high-resolution, dissipationless N-body simulations to investigate the cumulative effect of substructure mergers onto thin disk galaxies in the context of the LCDM paradigm of structure formation. Our simulation campaign is based on a hybrid approach. Substructure properties are culled directly from cosmological simulations of galaxy-sized cold dark matter (CDM) halos. In contrast to what can be inferred from statistics of the present-day substructure populations, accretions of massive subhalos onto the central regions of host halos, where the galactic disk resides, since z~1 should be common occurrences. One host halo merger history is subsequently used to seed controlled numerical experiments of repeated satellite impacts on an initially-thin Milky Way-type disk galaxy. We show that these accretion events produce several distinctive observational signatures in the stellar disk including: a ring-like feature in the outskirts; a significant flare; a central bar; and faint filamentary structures that (spuriously) resemble tidal streams. The final distribution of disk stars exhibits a complex vertical structure that is well-described by a standard ``thin-thick'' disk decomposition. We conclude that satellite-disk encounters of the kind expected in LCDM models can induce morphological features in galactic disks that are similar to those being discovered in the Milky Way, M31, and in other disk galaxies. These results highlight the significant role of CDM substructure in setting the structure of disk galaxies and driving galaxy evolution. Numerous cosmological hydrodynamic studies have addressed the formation of galaxies. Here we choose to study the first stages of galaxy formation, including non-equilibrium atomic primordial gas cooling, gravity and hydrodynamics. Using initial conditions appropriate for the concordance cosmological model of structure formation, we perform two adaptive mesh refinement simulations of ~10^8 M_sun galaxies at high redshift. The calculations resolve the Jeans length at all times with more than 16 cells and capture over 14 orders of magnitude in length scales. In both cases, the dense, 10^5 solar mass, one parsec central regions are found to contract rapidly and have turbulent Mach numbers up to 4. Despite the ever decreasing Jeans length of the isothermal gas, we only find one site of fragmentation during the collapse. However, rotational secular bar instabilities transport angular momentum outwards in the central parsec as the gas continues to collapse and lead to multiple nested unstable fragments with decreasing masses down to sub-Jupiter mass scales. Although these numerical experiments neglect star formation and feedback, they clearly highlight the physics of turbulence in gravitationally collapsing gas. Dark matter (DM) halos formed in CDM cosmologies seem to be characterized by a power law phase-space density profile. The density of the DM halos is often fitted by the NFW profile but a better fit is provided by the Sersic fitting formula. These relations are empirically derived from cosmological simulations of structure formation but have not yet been explained on a first principle basis. Here we solve the Jeans equation under the assumption of a spherical DM halo in dynamical equilibrium, that obeys a power law phase space density and either the NFW-like or the Sersic density profile. We then calculate the velocity anisotropy, beta(r), analytically. Our main result is that for the NFW-like profile the beta - gamma relation is not a linear one (where gamma is the logarithmic derivative of the density rho[r]). The shape of beta(r) depends mostly on the ratio of the gravitational to kinetic energy within the NFW scale radius R_s. For the Sersic profile a linear beta - gamma relation is recovered, and in particular for the Sersic index of n = 6.0 case the linear fit of Hansen & Moore is reproduced. Our main result is that the phase-space density power law, the Sersic density form and the linear beta - gamma dependence constitute a consistent set of relations which obey the spherical Jeans equation and as such provide the framework for the dynamical modeling of DM halos., 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

Hierarchical structure formation inevitably leads to the formation of supermassive binary black holes (BBHs) with a sub-parsec separation in galactic nuclei. However, to date there has been no unambiguous detection of such systems. In an effort to search for potential observational signatures of supermassive BBHs, we performed high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of two black holes in a binary of moderate eccentricity surrounded by a circumbinary disk. Building on our previous work, which has shown that gas can periodically transfer from the circumbinary disk to the black holes when the binary is on an eccentric orbit, the current set of simulations focuses on the formation of the individual accretion disks, their evolution and mutual interaction, and the predicted radiative signature. The variation in mass transfer with orbital phase from the circumbinary disk induces periodic variations in the light curve of the two accretion disks at ultraviolet wavelengths, but not in the optical or near-infrared. We present general properties of ionized hydrogen (HII) bubbles and their growth based on a state-of-the-art large-scale (100 Mpc/h) cosmological radiative transfer simulation. The simulation resolves all halos with atomic cooling at the relevant redshifts and simultaneously performs radiative transfer and dynamical evolution of structure formation. Our major conclusions include: (1) for significant HII bubbles, the number distribution is peaked at a volume of $\sim 0.6 {\rm Mpc^{3}/h^{3}}$ at all redshifts. But, at $z\le 10$, one large, connected network of bubbles dominates the entire HII volume. (2) HII bubbles are highly non-spherical. (3) The HII regions are highly biased with respect to the underlying matter distribution with the bias decreasing with time. (4) The non-gaussianity of the HII region is small when the universe becomes 50% ionized. The non-gaussianity reaches its maximal near the end of the reionization epoch $z\sim 6$. But at all redshifts of interest there is a significant non-gaussianity in the HII field. (5) Population III galaxies may play a significant role in the reionization process. Small bubbles are initially largely produced by Pop III stars. At $z\ge 10$ even the largest HII bubbles have a balanced ionizing photon contribution from Pop II and Pop III stars, while at $z\le 8$ Pop II stars start to dominate the overall ionizing photon production for large bubbles, although Pop III stars continue to make a non-negligible contribution. We use semi-analytic models of structure formation to interpret gravitational lensing measurements of substructure in galaxy cluster cores (R~0.8 and to have suffered ~0.4 (e.g. A68, A773) are interpreted as, on average, forming since z~0.4 and suffering >10% mass growth in the ~500Myr preceding z=0.2, i.e. since z=0.25. In summary, observational measurements of f_sub can be combined with structure formation models to estimate the age and assembly history of observed clusters. One of the most important and poorly-understood issues in structure formation is the role of outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN). Using large-scale cosmological simulations, we compute the impact of such outflows on the small-scale distribution of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Like gravitationally-heated structures, AGN outflows induce CMB distortions both through thermal motions and peculiar velocities, by processes known as the thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effects, respectively. For AGN outflows the thermal SZ effect is dominant, doubling the angular power spectrum on arcminute scales. But the most distinct imprint of AGN feedback is a substantial increase in the thermal SZ distortions around elliptical galaxies, post-starburst ellipticals, and quasars, which is linearly proportional to the outflow energy. While point source subtraction is difficult for quasars, we show that by appropriately stacking microwave measurements around early-type galaxies, the new generation of small-scale microwave telescopes will be able to directly measure AGN feedback at the level important for current theoretical models., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, submitted to ApJ (comments welcome)

We derive a semi-analytical extension of the spherical collapse model of structure formation that takes account of the effects of deviations from spherical symmetry and shell crossing which are important in the non-linear regime. Our model is designed so that it predicts a relation between the peculiar velocity and density contrast that agrees with the results of N-body simulations in the region where such a comparison can sensibly be made. Prior to turnaround, when the unmodified spherical collapse model is expect to be a good approximation, the predictions of the two models coincide almost exactly. The effects of a late time dominating dark energy component are also taken into account. The improved spherical collapse model is a useful tool when one requires a good approximation not just to the evolution of the density contrast but also its trajectory. Moreover, the analytical fitting formulae presented is simple enough to be used anywhere where the standard spherical collapse might be used but with the advantage that it includes a realistic model of the effects of virialisation., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Recently, new observations of Li6 in Pop II stars of the galactic halo have shown a surprisingly high abundance of this isotope, about a thousand times higher than its predicted primordial value. In previous papers, a cosmological model for the cosmic ray-induced production of this isotope in the IGM has been developed to explain the observed abundance at low metallicity. In this paper, given this constraint on the Li6, we calculate the non-thermal evolution with redshift of D, Be, and B in the IGM. In addition to cosmological cosmic ray interactions in the IGM, we include additional processes driven by SN explosions: neutrino spallation and a low energy component in the structures ejected by outflows to the IGM. We take into account CNO CRs impinging on the intergalactic gas. Although subdominant in the galactic disk, this process is shown to produce the bulk of Be and B in the IGM, due to the differential metal enrichment between structures (where CRs originate) and the IGM. We also consider the resulting extragalactic gamma-ray background which we find to be well below existing data. The computation is performed in the framework of hierarchical structure formation considering several star formation histories including Pop III stars. We find that D production is negligible and that a potentially detectable Be and B plateau is produced by these processes at the time of the formation of the Galaxy (z ~ 3)., 9 pages, 7 figures

We investigate the formation and evolution of galactic disks immersed in assembling live DM halos. Disk/halo components have been evolved from the cosmological initial conditions and represent the collapse of an isolated density perturbation. The baryons include gas (which participates in star formation [SF]) and stars. The feedback from the stellar energy release onto the ISM has been implemented. We find that (1) The growing triaxial halo figure tumbling is insignificant and the angular momentum (J) is channeled into the internal circulation; (2) Density response of the disk is out of phase with the DM, thus diluting the inner halo flatness and washing out its prolateness; (3) The total J is neathly conserved, even in models accounting for feedback; (4) The specific J for the DM is nearly constant, while that for baryons is decreasing; (5) Early stage of disk formation resembles the cat's cradle -- a small amorphous disk fueled via radial string patterns; (6) The initially puffed up gas component in the disk thins when the SF rate drops below ~5 Mo/yr; (7) About 40%-60% of the baryons remain outside the SF region; (8) Rotation curves appear to be flat and account for the observed disk/halo contributions; (9) A range of bulge-dominated to bulgeless disks was obtained; Lower density threshold for SF leads to a smaller, thicker disk; Gravitational softening in the gas has a substantial effect on various aspects of galaxy evolution and mimics a number of intrinsic processes within the ISM; (10) The models are characterized by an extensive bar-forming activity; (11) Nuclear bars, dynamically coupled and decoupled form in response to the gas inflow along the primary bars., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal. We study the structure of 107 bright sigmoids using full-resolution (2.5'' pixels) images from the Yohkoh Soft X-Ray Telescope (SXT) obtained between 1991 December and 2001 December. We find that none of these sigmoids are made of single loops of S or inverse-S shape; all comprise a pattern of multiple loops. We also find that all S-shaped sigmoids are made of right-bearing loops and all inverse-S-shaped sigmoids of left-bearing loops, without exception. We co-align the SXT images with Kitt Peak magnetograms to determine the magnetic field directions in each sigmoid. We use a potential-field source surface model to determine the direction of the overlying magnetic field. We find that sigmoids for which the relative orientation of these two fields has a parallel component outnumber antiparallel ones by more than an order of magnitude. We find that the number of sigmoids per active region varies with the solar cycle in a manner that is consistent with this finding. Finally, those few sigmoids that are antiparallel erupt roughly twice as often as those that are parallel. We briefly discuss the implications of these results in terms of formation and eruption mechanisms of flux tubes and sigmoids.

We discuss the effects of non-linear structure formation on the signature of acoustic oscillations in the late-time galaxy distribution. We argue that the dominant non-linear effect is the differential motion of pairs of tracers separated by 150 Mpc. These motions are driven by bulk flows and cluster formation and are much smaller than the acoustic scale itself. We present a model for the non-linear evolution based on the distribution of pairwise Lagrangian displacements that provides a quantitative model for the degradation of the acoustic signature, even for biased tracers in redshift space. The Lagrangian displacement distribution can be calibrated with a significantly smaller set of simulations than would be needed to construct a precise power spectrum. By connecting the acoustic signature in the Fourier basis with that in the configuration basis, we show that the acoustic signature is more robust than the usual Fourier-space intuition would suggest because the beat frequency between the peaks and troughs of the acoustic oscillations is a very small wavenumber that is well inside the linear regime. We argue that any possible shift of the acoustic scale is related to infall on 150 Mpc scale, which is O(0.5%) fractionally at first-order even at z=0. For the matter, there is a first-order cancellation such that the mean shift is O(10^{-4}). Brightness-temperature fluctuations in the redshifted 21-cm background from the cosmic dark ages are generated by irregularities in the gas-density distribution and can then be used to determine the statistical properties of density fluctuations in the early Universe. We first derive the most general expansion of brightness-temperature fluctuations up to second order in terms of all the possible sources of spatial fluctuations. We then focus on the three-point statistics and compute the angular bispectrum of brightness-temperature fluctuations generated prior to the epoch of hydrogen reionization. For simplicity, we neglect redshift-space distortions. We find that low-frequency radio experiments with arcmin angular resolution can easily detect non-Gaussianity produced by non-linear gravity with high signal-to-noise ratio. The bispectrum thus provides a unique test of the gravitational instability scenario for structure formation, and can be used to measure the cosmological parameters. Detecting the signature of primordial non-Gaussianity produced during or right after an inflationary period is more challenging but still possible. An ideal experiment limited by cosmic variance only and with an angular resolution of a few arcsec has the potential to detect primordial non-Gaussianity with a non-linearity parameter of f_NL ~ 1. Additional sources of error as weak lensing and an imperfect foreground subtraction could severely hamper the detection of primordial non-Gaussianity which will benefit from the use of optimal estimators combined with tomographic techniques.

The observed relationship between X-ray luminosity and temperature of the diffuse intercluster medium clearly shows the effect of nongravitational heating on the formation of galaxy clusters. Quasar feedback into the intergalactic medium can potentially be an important source of heating, and can have significant impact on structure formation. This feedback process is a source of thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich distortions of the cosmic microwave background. Using a simple one-dimensional Sedov-Taylor model of energy outflow, we calculate the angular power spectrum of the temperature distortion, which has an amplitude on the order of one micro-Kelvin. This signal will be at the noise limit of upcoming arcminute-scale microwave background experiments, including the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the South Pole Telescope, but will be directly detectable with deep exposures by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array or by stacking many microwave images., The discussion of detectability is expanded. The clustering properties of dark matter halos are a firm prediction of modern theories of structure formation. We use two large volume, high-resolution N-body simulations to study how the correlation function of massive dark matter halos depends upon their mass and formation history. We find that halos with the lowest concentrations are presently more clustered than those of higher concentration, the size of the effect increasing with halo mass; this agrees with trends found in studies of lower mass halos. The clustering dependence on other characterizations of the full mass accretion history appears weaker than the effect with concentration. Using the integrated correlation function, marked correlation functions, and a power-law fit to the correlation function, we find evidence that halos which have recently undergone a major merger or a large mass gain have slightly enhanced clustering relative to a randomly chosen population with the same mass distribution., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures; text improved, references and one figure added; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results from a large volume simulation of Hydrogen reionization. We combine 3d radiative transfer calculations and an N-body simulation, describing structure formation in the intergalactic medium, to detail the growth of HII regions around high redshift galaxies. Our simulation tracks 1024^3 dark matter particles, in a box of co-moving side length 65.6 Mpc/h. This large volume allows us to accurately characterize the size distribution of HII regions throughout most of the reionization process. At the same time, our simulation resolves many of the small galaxies likely responsible for reionization. It confirms a picture anticipated by analytic models: HII regions grow collectively around highly-clustered sources, and have a well-defined characteristic size, which evolves from a sub-Mpc scale at the beginning of reionization to R > 10 Mpc towards the end. We present a detailed statistical description of our results, and compare them with a numerical scheme based on the analytic model by Furlanetto, Zaldarriaga, and Hernquist. We find that the analytic calculation reproduces the size distribution of HII regions and the 21 cm power spectrum of the radiative transfer simulation remarkably well. The ionization field from the simulation, however, has more small scale structure than the analytic calculation, owing to Poisson scatter in the simulated abundance of galaxies on small scales. We propose and validate a simple scheme to incorporate this scatter into our calculations. Our results suggest that analytic calculations are sufficiently accurate to aid in predicting and interpreting the results of future 21 cm surveys. We calculate the evolution of Li6 generated from cosmic rays produced by an early population of massive stars. The computation is performed in the framework of hierarchical structure formation and is based on cosmic star formation histories constrained to reproduce the observed star formation rate at redshift z \la 6, the observed chemical abundances in damped Lyman alpha absorbers and in the intergalactic medium, and to allow for an early reionization of the Universe at z\sim 11 by Pop III stars as indicated by the third year results released by WMAP. We show that the pregalactic production of the Li6 isotope in the IGM via these Pop III stars can account for the Li6 plateau observed in metal poor halo stars without additional over-production of Li7. Our results depend on the efficiency of cosmic rays to propagate out of minihalos and the fraction of supernovae energy deposited in cosmic rays. We also compute the cosmic ray heating of the IGM gas. In general, we find somewhat high temperatures (of order 10^5 K) implying that the cosmic rays production of Li6 may be required to be confined to the so-called warm-hot IGM., Comment: 9 pages 8 figures

This paper examines the generation of seed magnetic fields due to the growth of cosmological perturbations. In the radiation era, different rates of scattering from photons induce local differences in the ion and electron density and velocity fields. The currents due to the relative motion of these fluids generate magnetic fields on all cosmological scales, peaking at a magnitude of ~ 10^{-24} Gauss at the epoch of recombination. To explain the properties of the most massive low-redshift galaxies and the shape of their mass function, recent models of galaxy evolution include strong AGN feedback to complement starburst-driven feedback in massive galaxies. Using the near-infrared integral-field spectrograph SPIFFI on the VLT, we searched for direct evidence for such a feedback in the optical emission line gas around the z=2.16 powerful radio galaxy MRC1138-262, likely a massive galaxy in formation. The kpc-scale kinematics, with FWHMs and relative velocities L* galaxy within a few 10 to 100 Myrs, fast enough to preserve the observed [alpha/Fe] overabundance in massive galaxies at low redshift. Using simple arguments, it appears that feedback like that observed in MRC1138-262 may have sufficient energy to inhibit material from infalling into the dark matter halo and thus regulate galaxy growth as required in some recent models of hierarchical structure formation.

Although N-body simulations of cosmic structure formation suggest that dark matter halos have density profiles shallower than isothermal at small radii and steeper at large radii, whether observed galaxy clusters follow this profile is still ambiguous. We use one such density profile, the asymmetric NFW profile, to model the mass distributions of 11 galaxy clusters with gravitational arcs observed by HST. We characterize the galaxy lenses in each cluster as NFW ellipsoids, each defined by an unknown scale convergence, scale radius, ellipticity, and position angle. For a given set of values of these parameters, we compute the arcs that would be produced by such a lens system. To define the goodness of fit to the observed arc system, we define a chi^2 function encompassing the overlap between the observed and reproduced arcs as well as the agreement between the predicted arc sources and the observational constraints on the source system. We minimize this chi^2 to find the values of the lens parameters that best reproduce the observed arc system in a given cluster. Here we report our best-fit lens parameters and corresponding mass estimates for each of the 11 lensing clusters. We find that cluster mass models based on lensing galaxies defined as NFW ellipsoids can accurately reproduce the observed arcs, and that the best-fit parameters to such a model fall within the reasonable ranges defined by simulations. These results assert NFW profiles as an effective model for the mass distributions of observed clusters.

We study the gravitational wave background produced from the formation and assembly of supermassive black holes within the cosmological paradigm of hierarchical structure formation. In particular, we focus on a supermassive black hole formation scenario in which the present-day population of supermassive black holes is built from high-mass seed black holes and we compute the concomitant spectrum of gravitational radiation produced by mergers of the seed black holes. We find that this scenario predicts a large, gravitational wave background that should be resolved into individual sources with space interferometers such as the proposed Laser Interferometric Space Antenna (LISA). The number of inspiral, merger and ringdown events above a signal to noise ratio of 5 that result from massive black hole seeds is of order 10^3. This prediction is robust and insensitive to several of the details of the model. We conclude that an interferometer such as LISA will be able to effectively rule out or confirm a class of models where supermassive black holes grow from high-mass seed black holes and may be able to place strong limits on the role of mergers as a channel for supermassive black hole growth. Supermassive black hole seeds likely form in the earliest proto-galactic structures at high redshift and the masses of supermassive black holes are known to be strongly correlated with the potentials of the spheroids in which they reside, therefore these results imply that space interferometers can be used as a powerful probe of the physics of galaxy formation and proto-galaxy formation at very high redshift., Comment: Replaced to match version accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Radiation hydrodynamical transport of ionization fronts in the next generation of cosmological reionization simulations holds the promise of predicting UV escape fractions from first principles as well as investigating the role of photoionization in feedback processes and structure formation. We present a multistep integration scheme for radiative transfer and hydrodynamics for accurate propagation of I-fronts and ionized flows from a point source in cosmological simulations. The algorithm is a photon-conserving method which correctly tracks the position of I-fronts at much lower resolutions than non-conservative techniques. The method applies direct hierarchical updates to the ionic species, bypassing the need for the costly matrix solutions required by implicit methods while retaining sufficient accuracy to capture the true evolution of the fronts. We review the physics of ionization fronts in power-law density gradients, whose analytical solutions provide excellent validation tests for radiation coupling schemes. The advantages and potential drawbacks of direct and implicit schemes are also considered, with particular focus on problem timestepping which if not properly implemented can lead to morphologically plausible I-front behavior that nonetheless departs from theory. The luminosity dependence of kinematical and isophotal properties of elliptical galaxies is investigated using numerical simulations of galaxy merging, combined with semi-analytical models of hierarchical structure formation. Mergers of spiral galaxies as the only formation mechanism for elliptical galaxies can neither reproduce the kinematical and photometric properties of very massive elliptical galaxies nor the change from rotationally flattened disky to anisotropic boxy systems with increasing luminosity. We present numerical simulations showing that binary mergers of early-type galaxies open an additional channel for the formation of anisotropic, slowly rotating and boxy ellipticals. Including this channel in a semi-analytical model we can successfully reproduce the observed trend that more luminous giant ellipticals are more boxy and less flattened by rotation. This trend can be strengthened by suppressing residual gas infall and star formation for galaxies with stellar bulge masses $M_* \geq 3 \times 10^{10} M_{\odot}$.
