We constrain the global parameters of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by modeling the first soft X-ray (0.4–6.8 keV) observations of the entire LMC produced in a single pointing with moderate spectral resolution by the HaloSat CubeSat. These data are best fit with the sum of two thermal plasma components in collisional ionization equilibrium and a power law. We find cool (0.210 ± 0.014 keV) and hot (0.89 ± 0.14 keV) components. The total X-ray luminosity of the LMC is (1.08 ± 0.14) × 1039 erg s−1. X-ray binaries make up a large fraction of the emission with a luminosity of (6.0 ± 0.8) × 1038 erg s−1, followed by cool gas from superbubbles, supernovae, and diffuse emission with a luminosity of (3.0 ± 0.3) × 1038 erg s−1. The hot gas from star formation contributes the smallest fraction, with a luminosity of (1.9 ± 0.5) × 1038 erg s−1. We estimate the total volume of the cool gas to be between (0.2–1.2) × 1010 pc3 and the hot gas to be between (1.0–5) × 107 pc3 for filling factors of f = 1 and 0.2. These volumes result in a total thermal energy for the cool gas between (1.4–3) × 1054 erg for electron densities of 0.017–0.04 cm−3, and a thermal energy for the hot gas between (1.7–4) × 1053 erg for electron densities of 0.12–0.3 cm−3. This yields cooling timescales for the cool and hot gas of (1.5–3) × 108 yr and (1.8–6) × 107 yr, respectively.

Pulsars are neutron stars, stellar corpses left over after supernova explosions of stars about ten times as massive as our Sun, with densities comparable to the atomic nucleus', spinning with periods from few milliseconds up to few seconds, and endowed with magnetic fields thousands billion times stronger than the Earth's, where particles are accelerated to the relativistic regime producing electromagnetic radiation across the entire spectrum. Although there is a general consensus on the fact that pulsars' radio emission is coherent in nature, whereas the emission from the optical to high-energy $\gamma$-rays is due to incoherent processes, it has not been established yet at which wavelengths the transition occurs, a key information for all emission models of pulsar magnetospheres. Of course, to address this issue covering the spectral region between high-frequency radio waves and the mid-IR is crucial. We used the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) to observe the Vela pulsar (PSR\, B0833$-$45), one of the very few observed in radio and from the mid-infrared up to the very high-energy $\gamma$-rays. We detected Vela at frequencies of 97.5, 145, 233, 343.5 GHz and found that its energy density spectrum follows a power-law of spectral index $\alpha = -0.93 \pm 0.16$. The ALMA spectrum corresponds to very high brightness temperatures - from $10^{17}$ to $10^{15}$ K - suggesting that a coherent radiative process still contributes to the mm/sub-mm emission. This is, therefore, the first indication of coherent emission other than radio originating in pulsars. At the same time, we identified an extended structure, preliminarily detected in ground-based observations. We support its interpretation as a counter-jet protruding from the pulsar., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, published in ApJ Letter

We report the $a~posteriori$ confirmation of two large-scale filaments along the sight-line of the blazar 1ES~1553+113, which correspond to Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) absorption features in the X-ray and far ultraviolet. We use the WISE-SuperCOSMOS photometric catalog to map the cosmic-web in the direction of the blazar, and find significant filaments at redshifts of $z=0.23\pm0.02$ and $z=0.31\pm0.02$, which roughly align with the absorption redshifts. A third X-ray absorption feature at $z_X=0.133$ did not have any corresponding structures in the photometric catalog.

The astrophysical journal 800(1), 61 - (2015). doi:10.1088/0004-637X/800/1/61, We present the results of 71.6 hr of observations of the Geminga pulsar (PSR J0633+1746) with the VERITAS very-high-energy gamma-ray telescope array. Data taken with VERITAS between 2007 November and 2013 February were phase-folded using a Geminga pulsar timing solution derived from data recorded by the XMM- Newton and Fermi-LAT space telescopes. No significant pulsed emission above 100 GeV is observed, and we report upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the integral flux above 135 GeV (spectral analysis threshold) of 4.0 × 10$^{–1}$3 s$^{–1}$ cm$^{–2}$ and 1.7 × 10$^{–13}$ s$^{–1}$ cm$^{–2}$ for the two principal peaks in the emission profile. These upper limits, placed in context with phase-resolved spectral energy distributions determined from 5 yr of data from the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT), constrain possible hardening of the Geminga pulsar emission spectra above ~50 GeV., Published by Univ.11032, Chicago, Ill. - Abstract
35 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, HESS J0632+057 is the only gamma-ray binary known so far whose position in the sky allows observations with ground-based observatories both in the northern and southern hemispheres. Here we report on long-term observations of HESS J0632+057 conducted with the VERITAS and H.E.S.S. Cherenkov Telescopes and the X-ray Satellite Swift, spanning a time range from 2004 to 2012 and covering most of the system's orbit. The VHE emission is found to be variable, and is correlated with that at X-ray energies. An orbital period of $315 ^{+6}_{-4}$ days is derived from the X-ray data set, which is compatible with previous results, $P = (321 \pm 5$) days. The VHE light curve shows a distinct maximum at orbital phases close to 0.3, or about 100 days after periastron passage, which coincides with the periodic enhancement of the X-ray emission. Furthermore, the analysis of the TeV data shows for the first time a statistically significant ($> 6.5 \sigma$) detection at orbital phases 0.6--0.9. The obtained gamma-ray and X-ray light curves and the correlation of the source emission at these two energy bands are discussed in the context of the recent ephemeris obtained for the system. Our results are compared to those reported for other gamma-ray binaries.
