We present an IGM H I tomographic map in a survey volume of 16 x 19 x 131 h(-3) comoving Mpc(3) (cMpc(3)) centered at MAMMOTH-1 nebula and three neighboring quasars at z = 2.3. The MAMMOTH-1 nebula is an enormous Ly alpha nebula (ELAN), hosted by a type-II quasar dubbed MAMMOTH1-QSO, that extends over 1 h(-1) cMpc with no clear physical origin. Here we investigate the H I-gas distribution around MAMMOTH1-QSO with the ELAN and three neighboring type-I quasars, making the IGM H I tomographic map with a spatial resolution of 2.6 h(-1) cMpc. Our H I tomographic map is reconstructed with H I Lya forest absorption of bright background objects at z = 2.4-2.9: one eBOSS quasar and 16 Keck/LRIS galaxy spectra. We estimate the radial profile of H I overdensity for MAMMOTH1-QSO, and find that MAMMOTH1-QSO resides in a volume with fairly weak H I absorption. This suggests that MAMMOTH1-QSO may have a proximity zone where quasar illuminates and photoionizes the surrounding H I gas and suppresses H I absorption, and that the ELAN is probably a photoionized cloud embedded in the cosmic web. The H I radial profile of MAMMOTH1-QSO is very similar to those of three neighboring type-I quasars at z = 2.3, which is compatible with the AGN unification model. We compare the distributions of the H I absorption and star-forming galaxies in our survey volume, and identify a spatial offset between density peaks of star-forming galaxies and H I gas. We utilize the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope to search for extended Lyα emission around the z ~ 6.6 QSO J0305−3150. After carefully subtracting the point spread function, we reach a nominal 5σ surface-brightness limit of SB_(5σ) = 1.9 × 10^(−18) erg s^(−1)cm^(−2) arcsec^(−2) over a 1 arcsec2 aperture, collapsing five wavelength slices centered at the expected location of the redshifted Lyα emission (i.e., at 9256 Å). Current data suggest the presence (5σ accounting for systematics) of a Lyα nebula that extends for 9 kpc around the QSO. This emission is displaced and redshifted by 155 km s^(−1) with respect to the location of the QSO host galaxy traced by the [C II] 158 μm emission line. The total luminosity is L(Lyα) = (3.0 ± 0.4) × 10^(42) erg s^(−1). Our analysis suggests that this emission is unlikely to rise from optically thick clouds illuminated by the ionizing radiation of the QSO. It is more plausible that the Lyα emission is due to the fluorescence of the highly ionized optically thin gas. This scenario implies a high hydrogen volume density of n_H ~ 6 cm^(−3). In addition, we detect a Lyα emitter (LAE) in the immediate vicinity of the QSO, i.e., with a projected separation of ~12.5 kpc and a line-of-sight velocity difference of 560 km s^(−1). The luminosity of the LAE is L(Lyα = (2.1 ± 0.2) × 10^(42) erg s^(−1) and its inferred star-formation rate is SFR ~ 1.3 M⊙ yr^(−1). The probability of finding such a close LAE is one order of magnitude above the expectations based on the QSO–galaxy cross-correlation function. This discovery is in agreement with a scenario where dissipative interactions favor the rapid build-up of supermassive black holes at early cosmic times.

With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar sightline can be used to study a foreground quasar's environment in absorption. We use a sample of 650 projected quasar pairs to study the HI Lya absorption transverse to luminous, z~2 quasars at proper separations of 30kpc < R < 1Mpc. In contrast to measurements along the line-of-sight, regions transverse to quasars exhibit enhanced HI Lya absorption and a larger variance than the ambient intergalactic medium, with increasing absorption and variance toward smaller scales. Analysis of composite spectra reveals excess absorption characterized by a Lya equivalent width profile W = 2.3A (R/100kpc)^-0.46. We also observe a high (~60%) covering factor of strong, optically thick HI absorbers (HI column log NHI > 17.3) at separations R, Accepted to ApJ; 38 pages, 25 figures. Comments still welcome
