We present ALMA and ACA [CI]$^{3}P_{1}-^{3}P_{0}$ ([CI](1-0)) observations of NGC6240, which we combine with ALMA CO(2-1) and IRAM PdBI CO(1-0) data to study the physical properties of the massive molecular (H$_2$) outflow. We discover that the receding and approaching sides of the H$_2$ outflow, aligned east-west, exceed 10 kpc in their total extent. High resolution ($0.24"$) [CI](1-0) line images surprisingly reveal that the outflow emission peaks between the two AGNs, rather than on either of the two, and that it dominates the velocity field in this nuclear region. We combine the [CI](1-0) and CO(1-0) data to constrain the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$) in the outflow, which is on average $2.1\pm1.2~\rm M_{\odot} (K~km~s^{-1}~pc^2)^{-1}$. We estimate that $60\pm20$ % of the total H$_2$ gas reservoir of NGC6240 is entrained in the outflow, for a resulting mass-loss rate of $\dot{M}_{\rm out}=2500\pm1200~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ $\equiv 50\pm30$ SFR. This energetics rules out a solely star formation-driven wind, but the puzzling morphology challenges a classic radiative-mode AGN feedback scenario. For the quiescent gas we compute $\langle\alpha_{\rm CO}\rangle = 3.2\pm1.8~\rm M_{\odot} (K~km~s^{-1}~pc^2)^{-1}$, which is at least twice the value commonly employed for (U)LIRGs. We observe a tentative trend of increasing $r_{21}\equiv L^{\prime}_{\rm CO(2-1)}/L^{\prime}_{\rm CO(1-0)}$ ratios with velocity dispersion and measure $r_{21}>1$ in the outflow, whereas $r_{21}\simeq1$ in the quiescent gas. We propose that molecular outflows are the location of the warmer, strongly unbound phase that partially reduces the opacity of the CO lines in (U)LIRGs, hence driving down their global $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ and increasing their $r_{21}$ values.

We present deep Chandra and XMM obervations of the galaxy cluster RDCS1252.9-2927, which was selected from the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS) and confirmed by extensive spectroscopy with the VLT at redshift z=1.237. With the Chandra data, the X-ray emission from the intra-cluster medium is well resolved and traced out to 500 kpc, thus allowing a measurement of the physical properties of the gas with unprecedented accuracy at this redshift. We detect a clear 6.7 keV Iron K line in the Chandra spectrum providing a redshift within 1% of the spectroscopic one. By augmenting our spectroscopic analysis with the XMM data (MOS detectors only), we significantly narrow down the 1 sigma error bar to 10% for the temperature and 30% for the metallicity, with best fit values kT = 6.0(+0.7,-0.5) keV, Z = 0.36(+0.12,-0.10) Z_sun. In the likely hypothesis of hydrostatic equilibrium, we measure a total mass of M_{500} = (1.9+-0.3)10^14 h_70^{-1}M_sun within R_{Delta=500} = 536 kpc. Overall, these observations imply that RDCS1252.9-2927 is the most X-ray luminous and likely the most massive bona-fide cluster discovered to date at z>1. When combined with current samples of distant clusters, these data lend further support to a mild evolution of the cluster scaling relations, as well the metallicity of the intra-cluster gas. Inspection of the cluster mass function in the current cosmological concordance model (h,Omega_m,Omega_Lambda)=(0.7,0.3,0.7) and sigma_8=0.7-0.8 shows that RDCS1252.9-2927 is an M* cluster at z=1.24, in keeping with number density expectations in the RDCS survey volume., 9 pages, 1 color figure (fig6.jpg). We present and discuss a three-dimensional diagnostic diagram for Seyfert 2 galaxies obtained using X-ray and CO mi data on a large sample of objects (reported in the Appendix). The diagram shows the Ka iron line equivalent width as a function of both the column density derived from the photoelectric cutoff and the 2-10 keV flux normalized to the CO mi optical-line flux (the latter corrected for extinction and assumed to be a true indicator of the source intrinsic luminosity). We find that the hard X-ray properties of type 2 objects depend on a single parameter, the absorbing column density along the line of sight, in accordance with the unified model. The diagram can be used to identify Compton-thick sources and to isolate and study peculiar objects. From this analysis we have obtained a column density distribution of Seyfert 2 galaxies that is thought to be a good approximation of the real distribution. A large population of heavily absorbed objects is discovered, including many Compton-thick candidates. Our results indicate that the mean log N-H cm(-2) in type 2 Seyfert galaxies is 23.5 and that as many as 23%-30% of sources have N-H greater than or equal to 10(24) cm(-2).

We present the first optical validation of an X-ray line-emitting object (XLEO) discovered in the XMM-Newton observation of the Chandra Deep Field-South. The object is an active galactic nucleus at zX ~ 0.66. An optical spectrum of the source indeed confirms and refines (zo = 0.665) the redshift obtained from the X-ray line. The X-ray and optical properties of the source are presented and discussed.

Using a long (150 ks) broadband (0.1-40 keV) BeppoSAX observation of the merging starburst system Arp 299 (=IC 694 + NGC 3690), we found the first unambiguous evidence of the presence of a deeply buried (NH 2.5 × 1024 cm-2) active galactic nucleus (AGN) having an intrinsic luminosity of L0.5-100 keV 1.9 × 1043 ergs s-1. The X-ray spectral properties of this AGN are discussed in detail, as well as the thermal component detected at soft X-ray energies, which, most likely, is associated with the starburst.

In this paper, we report the first results of a medium survey program conducted in the 2-10 keV energy band using data from the GIS2 instrument onboard the ASCA satellite. We have selected from the ASCA public archive (as of 1996 February 14) 87 images suitable for this project. Sixty serendipitous X-ray sources with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 3.5 were found. The 2-10 keV flux of the detected sources ranges from ~1.1 × 10-13 ergs cm-2 s-1 to ~4.1 × 10-12 ergs cm-2 s-1. Using this sample, we have extended the description of the 2-10 keV log N(>S)-log S to a flux limit of ~6.3 × 10-14 ergs cm-2 s-1 (the faintest detectable flux), i.e., about 2.7 orders of magnitude fainter than the Piccinotti et al. determination. The derived number-flux relationship is well described by a power-law model, N(>S) = K × S-α, with best-fit values α = 1.67 ± 0.18 and K = 2.85 × 10-21 deg-2. At the flux limit of the survey, about 27% of the cosmic X-ray background in the 2-10 keV energy band is resolved in discrete sources. A flattening of the number-flux relationship, within a factor of 10 from the flux limit of the present survey, is expected in order to avoid saturation. The implications of these results for models of the origin of the hard X-ray background are briefly discussed.

We present the X-ray Luminosity Function (XLF) of the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS) sample over the redshift range 0.05-0.8. Our results are derived from a complete flux-limited subsample of 70 galaxy clusters, representing the brightest half of the total sample, which have been spectroscopically identified down to the flux limit of 4*10^{-14} erg/cm^2/s (0.5-2.0 keV) and have been selected via a serendipitous search in ROSAT-PSPC pointed observations. The redshift baseline is large enough that evolutionary effects can be studied within the sample. The local XLF (z 2*10^{-14} arg/cm^2/s), reveal no significant evolution at least out to z=0.8, over a luminosity range 2*10^{42}-3*10^{44} erg/s in the [0.5-2 keV] band. These findings extend the study of cluster evolution to the highest redshifts and the faintest fluxes probed so far in X-ray surveys. They complement and do not necessarily conflict with those of the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey, leaving the possibility of negative evolution of the brightest end of the XLF at high redshifts.

A detailed study of the cosmological properties of X-ray selected AGN is presented. The data are analyzed within the framework of a pure luminosity evolution (PLE) model and the two most population evolutionary forms. Evidence is found for luminosity-dependent luminosity evolution if the evolution function has the exponential form. The simpler PLE model is more acceptable if the data are fitted with a power-law evolution function. Similar results are obtained in the optical domain from an analysis of a sample of optically selected QSOs with z less than 2.2 and B less than 20.

X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) and their implications for cosmological evolution are determined for 420 X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN). The local XLFs flatten considerably when L(x) is less than or equal to 5 x 10 to the 42nd ergs/s, and higher-luminosity XLF are demonstrated to fit a power-law approximation. Cosmological evolution in terms of two pure-luminosity evolutionary models is directly supported by model-independent AGN XLF, showing weak evolution when z is less than 0.4 and more pronounced evolution at higher z. The parameter C is determined for the two models, and the values support the 'slower' evolution of these AGN relative to QSOs selected optically. The deevolved XLF best-fit slope is found to be 3.05 for high luminosities and 1.35 for low luminosities, with no evidence of slope changes for other luminosities. 38 refs.

X-ray fluxes or upper limits in the 2-10 keV energy band from the HEAO 1 A-2 experiment are given for well-defined samples of QSOs and of Seyfert galaxies of types 1, 1.5 and 2, and for a list of BL Lac objects (334 sources in total). All on-orbit X-ray measurements of these objects published between 1976 and 1986 from other experiments have also been cataloged.
