Over the next 5 yr DESI MWS will observe approximately seven million stars at Galactic latitudes ∣b∣ > 20°, with an inclusive target selection scheme focused on the thick disk and stellar halo. MWS will also include several high-completeness samples of rare stellar types, including white dwarfs, low-mass stars within 100 pc of the Sun, and horizontal branch stars. We summarize the potential of DESI to advance understanding of the Galactic structure and stellar evolution. We introduce the final definitions of the main MWS target classes and estimate the number of stars in each class that will be observed. We describe our pipelines for deriving radial velocities, atmospheric parameters, and chemical abundances. We use ≃500,000 spectra of unique stellar targets from the DESI Survey Validation program (SV) to demonstrate that our pipelines can measure radial velocities to ≃1 km s−1 and [Fe/H] accurate to ≃0.2 dex for typical stars in our main sample. We find the stellar parameter distributions from ≈100 deg2 of SV observations with ≳90% completeness on our main sample are in good agreement with expectations from mock catalogs and previous surveys, This equipment was funded by MoE, NSTC, and National Tsing Hua University. We report the first constraints on the growth rate of the universe, f(z)σ8(z), with intrinsic alignments (IAs) of galaxies. We measure the galaxy density-intrinsic ellipticity cross-correlation and intrinsic ellipticity autocorrelation functions over 0.16 < z < 0.7 from luminous red galaxies (LRGs) and LOWZ and CMASS galaxy samples in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and SDSS-III BOSS survey. We detect clear anisotropic signals of IA due to redshift-space distortions. By combining measured IA statistics with the conventional galaxy clustering statistics, we obtain tighter constraints on the growth rate. The improvement is particularly prominent for the LRG, which is the brightest galaxy sample and known to be strongly aligned with underlying dark matter distribution; using the measurements on scales above 10 h−1 Mpc, we obtain $f{sigma }_{8}={0.5196}_{-0.0354}^{+0.0352}$ (68% confidence level) from the clustering-only analysis and $f{sigma }_{8}={0.5322}_{-0.0291}^{+0.0293}$ with clustering and IA, meaning 19% improvement. The constraint is in good agreement with the prediction of general relativity, f σ8 = 0.4937 at z = 0.34. For LOWZ and CMASS samples, the improvement of constraints on f σ8 is found to be 10% and 3.5%, respectively. The primary DESI dark-time targets are emission line galaxies, luminous red galaxies, and quasars. In bright time, DESI will focus on two surveys known as the Bright Galaxy Survey and the Milky Way Survey. DESI also observes a selection of "secondary" targets for bespoke science goals. This paper gives an overview of the publicly available pipeline (desitarget) used to process targets for DESI observations. Highlights include details of the different DESI survey targeting phases, the targeting ID (TARGETID) used to define unique targets, the bitmasks used to indicate a particular type of target, the data model and structure of DESI targeting files, and examples of how to access and use the desitarget code base. This paper will also describe "supporting" DESI target classes, such as standard stars, sky locations, and random catalogs that mimic the angular selection function of DESI targets. The detection of gravitational waves from binary neuron star merger GW170817 and electromagnetic counterparts GRB170817 and AT2017gfo kick-started the field of gravitational wave multimessenger astronomy. The optically red to near infra-red emission (`red' component) of AT2017gfo was readily explained as produced by the decay of newly created nuclei produced by rapid neutron capture (a kilonova). However, the ultra-violet to optically blue emission (`blue' component) that was dominant at early times (up to 1.5 days) received no consensus regarding its driving physics. Among many explanations, two leading contenders are kilonova radiation from a lanthanide-poor ejecta component or shock interaction (cocoon emission). In this work, we simulate AT2017gfo-like light curves and perform a Bayesian analysis to study whether an ultra-violet satellite capable of rapid gravitational wave follow-up, could distinguish between physical processes driving the early `blue' component. We find that a Dorado-like ultra-violet satellite, with a 50 sq. deg. field of view and a limiting magnitude (AB) of 20.5 for a 10 minute exposure is able to distinguish radiation components up to at least 160 Mpc if data collection starts within 3.2 or 5.2 hours for two possible AT2017gfo-like light curve scenarios. We also study the degree to which parameters can be constrained with the obtained photometry. We find that, while ultra-violet data alone constrains parameters governing the outer ejecta properties, the combination of both ground-based optical and space-based ultra-violet data allows for tight constraints for all but one parameter of the kilonova model up to 160 Mpc. These results imply that an ultra-violet mission like Dorado would provide unique insights into the early evolution of the post-merger system and its driving emission physics., 13 pages, 2 tables, 7 figures. We present a Bayesian hierarchical framework to analyze photometric galaxy survey data with stellar population synthesis (SPS) models. Our method couples robust modeling of spectral energy distributions with a population model and a noise model to characterize the statistical properties of the galaxy populations and real observations, respectively. By self-consistently inferring all model parameters, from high-level hyper-parameters to SPS parameters of individual galaxies, one can separate sources of bias and uncertainty in the data.We demonstrate the strengths and flexibility of this approach by deriving accurate photometric redshifts for a sample of spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies in the COSMOS field, all with 26-band photometry and spectroscopic redshifts. We achieve a performance competitive with publicly-released photometric redshift catalogs based on the same data. Prior to this work, this approach was computationally intractable in practice due to the heavy computational load of SPS model calls; we overcome this challenge using with neural emulators. We find that the largest photometric residuals are associated with poor calibration for emission line luminosities and thus build a framework to mitigate these effects. This combination of physics-based modeling accelerated with machine learning paves the path towards meeting the stringent requirements on the accuracy of photometric redshift estimation imposed by upcoming cosmological surveys. The hot gas that constitutes the intracluster medium (ICM) has been studied at X-ray and millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths (Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect) for decades. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) offer an additional method of directly measuring the ICM and gas surrounding clusters via observables such as dispersion measure (DM) and Faraday rotation measure. We report the discovery of two FRB sources detected with the Deep Synoptic Array whose host galaxies belong to massive galaxy clusters. In both cases, the FRBs exhibit excess extragalactic DM, some of which likely originate in the ICM of their respective clusters. FRB 20220914A resides in the galaxy cluster A2310 at z = 0.1125 with a projected offset from the cluster center of 520 ± 50 kpc. The host of a second source, FRB 20220509G, is an elliptical galaxy at z = 0.0894 that belongs to the galaxy cluster A2311 at the projected offset of 870 ± 50 kpc. These sources represent the first time an FRB has been localized to a galaxy cluster. We combine our FRB data with archival X-ray, Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ), and optical observations of these clusters in order to infer properties of the ICM, including a measurement of gas temperature from DM and y SZ of 0.8–3.9 keV. We then compare our results to massive cluster halos from the IllustrisTNG simulation. Finally, we describe how large samples of localized FRBs from future surveys will constrain the ICM, particularly beyond the virial radius of clusters.

Gaussian Process (GP) has gained much attention in cosmology due to its ability to reconstruct cosmological data in a model-independent manner. In this study, we compare two methods for GP kernel selection: Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) Rejection and nested sampling. We analyze three types of data: cosmic Chronometer data (CC), Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa), and Gamma Ray Burst (GRB), using five kernel functions. To evaluate the differences between kernel functions, we assess the strength of evidence using Bayes factors. Our results show that, for ABC Rejection, the Mat\'ern kernel with $\nu$=5/2 (M52 kernel) outperformes the commonly used Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel in approximating all three datasets. Bayes factors indicate that the M52 kernel typically supports the observed data better than the RBF kernel, but with no clear advantage over other alternatives. However, nested sampling gives different results, with the M52 kernel losing its advantage. At z < 0.6, the DESI Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) will produce the most detailed map of the universe during the dark-energy-dominated epoch with redshifts of >10 million galaxies spanning 14,000 deg2. In this work, we present and validate the final BGS target selection and survey design. From the Legacy Surveys, BGS will target an r < 19.5 mag limited sample (BGS Bright), a fainter 19.5 < r < 20.175 color-selected sample (BGS Faint), and a smaller low-z quasar sample. BGS will observe these targets using exposure times scaled to achieve homogeneous completeness and cover the footprint three times. We use observations from the Survey Validation programs conducted prior to the main survey along with simulations to show that BGS can complete its strategy and make optimal use of "bright" time. BGS targets have stellar contamination 80% fiber assignment efficiency. Finally, BGS Bright and BGS Faint will achieve >95% redshift success over any observing condition. BGS meets the requirements for an extensive range of scientific applications. BGS will yield the most precise baryon acoustic oscillation and redshift-space distortion measurements at z < 0.4. It presents opportunities for new methods that require highly complete and dense samples (e.g., N-point statistics, multitracers). BGS further provides a powerful tool to study galaxy populations and the relations between galaxies and dark matter. © 2023. The Author(s). Cosmological surveys must correct their observations for the reddening of extragalactic objects by Galactic dust. Existing dust maps, however, have been found to have spatial correlations with the large-scale structure of the Universe. Errors in extinction maps can propagate systematic biases into samples of dereddened extragalactic objects and into cosmological measurements such as correlation functions between foreground lenses and background objects and the primordial non-gaussianity parameter $f_{NL}$. Emission-based maps are contaminated by the cosmic infrared background, while maps inferred from stellar-reddenings suffer from imperfect removal of quasars and galaxies from stellar catalogs. Thus, stellar-reddening based maps using catalogs without extragalactic objects offer a promising path to making dust maps with minimal correlations with large-scale structure. We present two high-latitude integrated extinction maps based on stellar reddenings, with a point spread function of full-width half-maximum 6.1' and 15'. We employ a strict selection of catalog objects to filter out galaxies and quasars and measure the spatial correlation of our extinction maps with extragalactic structure. Our galactic extinction maps have reduced spatial correlation with large scale structure relative to most existing stellar-reddening based and emission-based extinction maps., 21 pages, 10 figures

We search for the presence of cool cores in optically-selected galaxy clusters from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and investigate their prevalence as a function of redshift and cluster richness. Clusters were selected from the redMaPPer analysis of three years of DES observations that have archival Chandra X-ray observations, giving a sample of 99 clusters with a redshift range of $0.11 < z < 0.87$ and a richness range of $25 < λ< 207$. Using the X-ray data, the core temperature was compared to the outer temperature to identify clusters where the core temperature is a factor of 0.7 or less than the outer temperature. We found a cool core fraction of approximately 20% with no significant trend in the cool core fraction with either redshift or richness., shortened version accepted to RNAAS

In cosmological simulations without baryons, the relation between the specific angular momentum $j_{\rm h}$ and mass $M_{\rm h}$ of galactic dark matter halos has the well-established form $j_{\rm h} \propto M_{\rm h}^{2/3}$. This is invariably adopted as the starting point in efforts to understand the analogous relation between the specific angular momentum $j_{\ast}$ and mass $M_{\ast}$ of the stellar parts of galaxies, which are often re-expressed relative to the corresponding halo properties through the retention fractions $f_j = j_{\ast} / j_{\rm h}$ and $f_M = M_{\ast} / M_{\rm h}$. An important caveat here is that the adopted $j_{\rm h} \propto M_{\rm h}^{2/3}$ relation could, in principle, be modified by the gravitational back-reaction of baryons on dark matter (DM). We have tested for this possibility by comparing the $j_{\rm h}$-$M_{\rm h}$ relations in the IllustrisTNG100 and TNG50 simulations that include baryons (full-physics runs) with their counterparts that do not (DM-only runs). In all cases, we find scaling relations of the form $j_{\rm h} \propto M_{\rm h}^{\alpha}$, with $\alpha \approx 2/3$ over the ranges of mass and redshift studied here: $M_{\rm h} \geq 10^{10} \, M_{\odot}$ and $0 \leq z \leq 2$. The values of $\alpha$ are virtually identical in the full-physics and DM-only runs at the same redshift. The only detectable effect of baryons on the $j_{\rm h}$-$M_{\rm h}$ relation is a slightly higher normalization, by 12%-15% at $z=0$ and by 5% at $z=2$. This implies that existing estimates of $f_j$ based on DM-only simulations should be adjusted downward by similar amounts. We analyze clustering measurements of BOSS galaxies using a simulation-based emulator of two-point statistics. We focus on the monopole and quadrupole of the redshift-space correlation function, and the projected correlation function, at scales of $0.1\sim60~h^{-1}$Mpc. Although our simulations are based on $w$CDM with general relativity (GR), we include a scaling parameter of the halo velocity field, $\gamma_f$, defined as the amplitude of the halo velocity field relative to the GR prediction. We divide the BOSS data into three redshift bins. After marginalizing over other cosmological parameters, galaxy bias parameters, and the velocity scaling parameter, we find $f\sigma_{8}(z=0.25) = 0.413\pm0.031$, $f\sigma_{8}(z=0.4) = 0.470\pm0.026$ and $f\sigma_{8}(z=0.55) = 0.396\pm0.022$. Compared with Planck observations using a flat $\Lambda$CDM model, our results are lower by $1.9\sigma$, $0.3\sigma$ and $3.4\sigma$ respectively. These results are consistent with other recent simulation-based results at non-linear scales, including weak lensing measurements of BOSS LOWZ galaxies, two-point clustering of eBOSS LRGs, and an independent clustering analysis of BOSS LOWZ. All these results are generally consistent with a combination of $\gamma_f^{1/2}\sigma_8\approx 0.75$. We note, however, that the BOSS data is well fit assuming GR, i.e. $\gamma_f=1$. We use large simulations of Lyman-Alpha Emitters with different fractions of ionized intergalactic medium to quantify the clustering of Ly$\alpha$ emitters as measured by the Void Probability function (VPF), and how it evolves under different ionization scenarios. We quantify how well we might be able to distinguish between these scenarios with a deep spectroscopic survey using the future Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Since Roman will be able to carry out blind spectroscopic surveys of Ly$\alpha$ emitters continuously between $7 3-4\sigma$ at several redshifts between $75-8\sigma$) across the epoch of reionization, and would yield a detailed history of the reionization of the IGM and its effect on Lyman-$\alpha$ Emitter clustering., Comment: 19 total pages, 7 total figures, appendix with 3 additional figures

The scattering of Ly$\alpha$ photons from the first radiating sources in the Universe plays a pivotal role in 21-cm radio detections of Cosmic Dawn and the Epoch of Reionization through the Wouthuysen-Field effect. We present evidence for scale-independent misalignment of interstellar dust filaments and magnetic fields. We estimate the misalignment by comparing millimeter-wave dust-polarization measurements from Planck with filamentary structures identified in neutral-hydrogen (HI) measurements from HI4PI. We find that the misalignment angle displays a scale independence (harmonic coherence) for features larger than the HI4PI beam width ($16.2'$). We additionally find a spatial coherence on angular scales of $\mathcal{O}(1^\circ)$. We present several misalignment estimators formed from the auto- and cross-spectra of dust-polarization and HI-based maps, and we also introduce a map-space estimator. Applied to large regions of the high-Galactic-latitude sky, we find a global misalignment angle of $\sim 2^\circ$, which is robust to a variety of masking choices. By dividing the sky into small regions, we show that the misalignment angle correlates with the parity-violating $TB$ cross-spectrum measured in the Planck dust maps. The misalignment paradigm also predicts a dust $EB$ signal, which is of relevance in the search for cosmic birefringence but as yet undetected; the measurements of $EB$ are noisier than of $TB$, and our correlations of $EB$ with misalignment angle are found to be weaker and less robust to masking choices. We also introduce an HI-based dust-polarization template constructed from the Hessian matrix of the HI intensity, which is found to correlate more strongly than previous templates with Planck dust $B$ modes., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures

Based on independent shear measurements using the DECaLS/DR8 imaging data, we measure the weak lensing signals around isolated central galaxies (ICGs) from SDSS/DR7 at $z\sim0.1$. The projected stellar mass density profiles of surrounding satellite galaxies are further deduced, using photometric sources from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey (pDR3). The signals of ICGs $+$ their extended stellar halos are taken from Wang et al.(2021). All measurements are compared with predictions by the Illustris-TNG300-1 simulation. We find, overall, a good agreement between observation and TNG300. In particular, a correction to the stellar mass of massive observed ICGs is applied based on the calibration of He et al.(2013), which brings a much better agreement with TNG300 predicted lensing signals at $\log_{10}M_\ast/M_\odot>11.1$. In real observation, red ICGs are hosted by more massive dark matter halos, have more satellites and more extended stellar halos than blue ICGs at fixed stellar mass. However, in TNG300 there are more satellites around blue ICGs at fixed stellar mass, and the outer stellar halos of red and blue ICGs are similar. The stellar halos of TNG galaxies are more extended compared with real observed galaxies, especially for blue ICGs with $\log_{10}M_\ast/M_\odot>10.8$. We find the same trend for TNG100 galaxies and for true halo central galaxies. The tensions between TNG and real galaxies might indicate that satellite disruptions are stronger in TNG. In both TNG300 and observation, satellites approximately trace the underlying dark matter distribution beyond $0.1R_{200}$, but the fraction of total stellar mass in TNG300 does not show the same radial distribution as real galaxies., accepted by ApJ, comments welcome

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) is an untargeted spectroscopic survey that aims to measure the expansion rate of the Universe at $z \sim 2.4$ to 1% precision for both $H(z)$ and $D_A(z)$. HETDEX is in the process of mapping in excess of one million Lyman Alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies and a similar number of lower-z galaxies as a tracer of the large-scale structure. The success of the measurement is predicated on the post-observation separation of galaxies with Ly$\alpha$ emission from the lower-$z$ interloping galaxies, primarily [OII], with low contamination and high recovery rates. The Emission Line eXplorer (ELiXer) is the principal classification tool for HETDEX, providing a tunable balance between contamination and completeness as dictated by science needs. By combining multiple selection criteria, ELiXer improves upon the 20 Angstrom rest-frame equivalent width cut commonly used to distinguish LAEs from lower-$z$ [OII] emitting galaxies. Despite a spectral resolving power, R $\sim800$, that cannot resolve the [OII] doublet, we demonstrate the ability to distinguish LAEs from foreground galaxies with 98.1% accuracy. We estimate a contamination rate of Ly$\alpha$ by [OII] of 1.2% and a Ly$\alpha$ recovery rate of 99.1% using the default ELiXer configuration. The light from a source at a distance d will arrive at detectors separated by 100 AU at times that differ by as much as 120 (d/100 Mpc)^{-1} nanoseconds because of the curvature of the wavefront. At gigahertz frequencies, the arrival time difference can be determined to better than a nanosecond with interferometry. If the space-time positions of the detectors are known to a few centimeters, comparable to the accuracy to which very long baseline interferometry baselines and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) geolocations are constrained, nanosecond timing would allow competitive cosmological constraints. We show that a four-detector constellation at Solar radii of >10 AU could measure distances to individual sources with sub-percent precision and, hence, cosmological parameters such as the Hubble constant to this precision. The precision increases quadratically with baseline length. FRBs are the only known bright extragalactic radio source that are sufficiently point-like. The recent searches for z>11 galaxies using the James Webb Space Telescope have resulted in an unexpectedly high number of candidate objects, which imply at least an order of magnitude higher number density of z>11 galaxies than the previously favored predictions. A question has risen whether there are some new types of contaminants among these candidates. The candidate sample of Yan et al. (2023a), totalling 87 dropouts, is the largest one, and we notice that a number of these candidates are point-like. We hypothesize that the point-source dropouts could be supernovae at high redshifts. Further investigation shows that most of their spectral energy distributions indeed can be explained by supernovae at various redshifts from z ~ 1--15, which lends support to this hypothesis. Attributing such point-source dropouts to supernova contamination cannot eliminate the tension, however, because they only account for ~10% of the Yan et al.'s sample. On the other hand, the discovery of "contaminant" supernovae at z>3 will have a series of important implications. Ironically, the existence of supernovae at $z>10$ would still imply that the previously favored picture of early galaxy formation severely underestimates the global star formation rate density such redshifts. The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is expressed by $\phi(m) \propto m^{-\alpha}$ with the slope $\alpha$, and known as the poorly-constrained but very important function in studies of star and galaxy formation. There are no sensible observational constraints on the IMF slopes beyond Milky Way and nearby galaxies. Here we combine two sets of observational results, 1) cosmic densities of core-collapse supernova explosion (CCSNe) rates and 2) cosmic far ultraviolet radiation (and infrared re-radiation) densities, which are sensitive to massive ($\simeq 8-50 \,{\rm M}_\odot$) and moderately massive ($\simeq 2.5-7 \,{\rm M}_\odot$) stars, respectively, and constrain the IMF slope at $m>1\,{\rm M}_\odot$ with a freedom of redshift evolution. Although no redshift evolution is identified beyond the uncertainties, we find that the cosmic average IMF slope at $z=0$ is $\alpha=1.8-3.2$ at the 95 % confidence level that is comparable with the Salpeter IMF, $\alpha=2.35$, which marks the first constraint on the cosmic average IMF. We show a forecast for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope supernova survey that will provide significantly strong constraints on the IMF slope with $\delta \alpha\simeq 0.5$ over $z=0-2$. Moreover, as for an independent IMF probe instead of 1), we suggest to use diffuse supernovae neutrino background (DSNB), relic neutrinos from CCSNe. We expect that the Hyper-Kamiokande neutrino observations over 20 years will improve the constraints on the IMF slope and the redshift evolution significantly better than those obtained today, if the systematic uncertainties of DSNB production physics are reduced in the future numerical simulations., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, published in ApJ

We describe a public data release of the FIRE-2 cosmological zoom-in simulations of galaxy formation, available at http://flathub.flatironinstitute.org/fire, from the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. FIRE-2 simulations achieve parsec-scale resolution to explicitly model the multi-phase interstellar medium while implementing direct models for stellar evolution and feedback, including stellar winds, core-collapse and Ia supernovae, radiation pressure, photoionization, and photoelectric heating. We release complete snapshots from 3 suites of simulations. The first comprises 20 simulations that zoom in on 14 Milky Way-mass galaxies, 5 SMC/LMC-mass galaxies, and 4 lower-mass galaxies including 1 ultra-faint; we release 39 snapshots across z = 0 - 10. The second comprises 4 massive galaxies, with 19 snapshots across z = 1 - 10. Finally, a high-redshift suite comprises 22 simulations, with 11 snapshots across z = 5 - 10. Each simulation also includes dozens of resolved lower-mass (satellite) galaxies in its zoom-in region. Snapshots include all stored properties for all dark matter, gas, and star particles, including 11 elemental abundances for stars and gas, and formation times (ages) of star particles. We also release accompanying (sub)halo catalogs, which include galaxy properties and member star particles. For the simulations to z = 0, including all Milky Way-mass galaxies, we release the formation coordinates and an "ex-situ" flag for all star particles, pointers to track particles across snapshots, catalogs of stellar streams, and multipole basis expansions for the halo mass distributions. A numerical detection of the radius-dependent spin transition of dark matter halos is reported. Analyzing the data from the IllustrisTNG simulations, we measure the halo spin vectors at several inner radii within the virial boundaries and investigate their orientations in the principal frames of the tidal and velocity shear fields, called the Tweb and Vweb, respectively. The halo spin vectors in the high-mass section exhibit a transition from the Tweb intermediate to major principal axes as they are measured at more inner radii, which holds for both of the dark matter and baryonic components. The radius threshold at which the transition occurs depends on the smoothing scale, $R_{f}$, becoming larger as $R_{f}$ decreases. For the case of the Vweb, the occurrence of the radius-dependent spin transition is witnessed only when $R_{f}\ge 1\, h^{-1}$Mpc. Repeating the same analysis but with the vorticity vectors, we reveal a critical difference from the spins. The vorticity vectors are always perpendicular to the Tweb (Vweb) major principal axes, regardless of $R_{f}$, which indicates that the halo inner spins are not strongly affected by the generation of vorticity. It is also shown that the halo spins, as well as the Tweb (Vweb) principal axes, have more directional coherence over a wide range of radial distances in the regions where the vorticity vectors have higher magnitudes. We characterize Galactic dust filaments by correlating BICEP/Keck and Planck data with polarization templates based on neutral hydrogen (H I) observations. Dust polarization is important for both our understanding of astrophysical processes in the interstellar medium (ISM) and the search for primordial gravitational waves in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In the diffuse ISM, H I is strongly correlated with the dust and partly organized into filaments that are aligned with the local magnetic field. We analyze the deep BICEP/Keck data at 95, 150, and 220 GHz, over the low-column-density region of sky where BICEP/Keck has set the best limits on primordial gravitational waves. We separate the H I emission into distinct velocity components and detect dust polarization correlated with the local Galactic H I but not with the H I associated with Magellanic Stream I. We present a robust, multifrequency detection of polarized dust emission correlated with the filamentary H I morphology template down to 95 GHz. For assessing its utility for foreground cleaning, we report that the H I morphology template correlates in B modes at a $\sim$10-65$\%$ level over the multipole range $20 < \ell < 200$ with the BICEP/Keck maps, which contain contributions from dust, CMB, and noise components. We measure the spectral index of the filamentary dust component spectral energy distribution to be $β= 1.54 \pm 0.13$. We find no evidence for decorrelation in this region between the filaments and the rest of the dust field or from the inclusion of dust associated with the intermediate velocity H I. $R$-process enhanced stars with [Eu/Fe]$\geq+0.7$ (so-called $r$-II stars) are believed to have formed in an extremely neutron-rich environment in which a rare astrophysical event (e.g., a neutron star merger) occurred. This scenario is supported by the existence of an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, Reticulum~II, where most of the stars are highly enhanced in $r$-process elements. In this scenario, some small fraction of dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way were $r$ enhanced. When each $r$-enhanced dwarf galaxy accreted to the Milky Way, it deposited many $r$-II stars in the Galactic halo with similar orbital actions. To search for the remnants of the $r$-enhanced systems, we analyzed the distribution of the orbital actions of $N=161$ $r$-II stars in the Solar neighborhood by using the Gaia EDR3 data. Since the observational uncertainty is not negligible, we applied a newly-developed {\it greedy optimistic clustering method} to the orbital actions of our sample stars. We found six clusters of $r$-II stars that have similar orbits and chemistry, one of which is a new discovery. Given the apparent phase-mixed orbits of the member stars, we interpret that these clusters are good candidates for remnants of completely disrupted $r$-enhanced dwarf galaxies that merged with the ancient Milky Way., Main text 21 pages, References 3 pages, Appendix 16 pages. 11 figures. 3 tables. A non-negligible source of systematic bias in cosmological analyses of galaxy surveys is the on-sky modulation caused by foregrounds and variable image characteristics such as observing conditions. Standard mitigation techniques perform a regression between the observed galaxy density field and sky maps of the potential contaminants. Such maps are ad-hoc, lossy summaries of the heterogeneous sets of co-added exposures that contribute to the survey. We present a methodology to address this limitation, and extract the spurious correlations between the observed distribution of galaxies and arbitrary stacks of single-epoch exposures. We study four types of galaxies (LRGs, ELGs, QSOs, LBGs) in the three regions of the DESI Legacy Surveys (North, South, DES), which results in twelve samples with varying levels and type of contamination. We find that the new technique outperforms the traditional ones in all cases, and is able to remove higher levels of contamination. This paves the way for new methods that extract more information from multi-epoch galaxy survey data and mitigate large-scale biases more effectively., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. Reliable extraction of cosmological information from observed cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps may require removal of strongly foreground contaminated regions from the analysis. In this article, we employ an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the full sky CMB angular power spectrum between intermediate to large angular scales from the partial sky spectrum obtained from masked CMB temperature anisotropy map. We use a simple ANN architecture with one hidden layer containing $895$ neurons. Using $1.2 \times 10^{5}$ training samples of full sky and corresponding partial sky CMB angular power spectra at Healpix pixel resolution parameter $N_{side} = 256$, we show that predicted spectrum by our ANN agrees well with the target spectrum at each realization for the multipole range $2 \leq l \leq 512$. The predicted spectra are statistically unbiased and they preserve the cosmic variance accurately. Statistically, the differences between the mean predicted and underlying theoretical spectra are within approximately $3\sigma$. Moreover, the probability densities obtained from predicted angular power spectra agree very well with those obtained from `actual' full sky CMB angular power spectra for each multipole. Interestingly, our work shows that the significant correlations in input cut-sky spectra, due to mode-mode coupling introduced on the partial sky, are effectively removed since the ANN learns the hidden pattern between the partial sky and full sky spectra preserving the entire statistical properties. The excellent agreement of statistical properties between the predicted and the ground-truth demonstrates the importance of using artificial intelligence systems in cosmological analysis more widely., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

Although weak lensing (WL) is a powerful method to estimate a galaxy cluster mass without any dynamical assumptions, a model bias can arise when the cluster density profile departs from the assumed model profile. In a merging system, the bias is expected to become most severe because the constituent halos undergo significant structural changes. In this study, we investigate WL mass bias in binary cluster mergers using a suite of idealized hydrodynamical simulations. Realistic WL shear catalogs are generated by matching the source galaxy properties, such as intrinsic shape dispersion, measurement noise, source densities, etc., to those from Subaru and {\it Hubble Space Telescope} observations. We find that, with the typical mass-concentration ($M$-$c$) relation and the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, the halo mass bias depends on the time since the first pericenter passage and increases with the mass of the companion cluster. The time evolution of the mass bias is similar to that of the concentration, indicating that, to first order, the mass bias is modulated by the concentration change. For a collision between two $\sim10^{15}~M_{\odot}$ clusters, the maximum bias amounts to $\sim60\%$. This suggests that previous WL studies may have significantly overestimated the mass of the clusters in some of the most massive mergers. Finally, we apply our results to three merger cases: Abell 2034, MACS J1752.0+4440, and ZwCl 1856.8+6616, and report their mass biases at the observed epoch, as well as their pre-merger masses, utilizing their merger shock locations as tracers of the merger phases., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted to ApJ

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) can vary significantly in their rest-frame optical/UV continuum emission, and with strong associated changes in broad line emission, on much shorter timescales than predicted by standard models of accretion disks around supermassive black holes. Most such ``changing-look'' or "changing-state" AGN -- and at higher luminosities, changing-look quasars (CLQs) -- have been found via spectroscopic follow-up of known quasars showing strong photometric variability. The Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey of SDSS-IV includes repeat spectroscopy of large numbers of previously-known quasars, many selected irrespective of photometric variability, and with spectral epochs separated by months to decades. Our visual examination of these repeat spectra for strong broad line variability yielded 61 newly-discovered CLQ candidates. We quantitatively compare spectral epochs to measure changes in continuum and H$\beta$ broad line emission, finding 19 CLQs, of which 15 are newly-recognized. The parent sample includes only broad line quasars, so our study tends to find objects that have dimmed, i.e., turn-off CLQs. However, we nevertheless find 4 turn-on CLQs that meet our criteria, albeit with broad lines in both dim and bright states. We study the response of H$\beta$ and MgII emission lines to continuum changes. The Eddington ratios of CLQs are low, and/or their H$\beta$ broad line width is large relative to the overall quasar population. Repeat quasar spectroscopy in the upcoming SDSS-V Black Hole Mapper program will reveal significant numbers of CLQs, enhancing our understanding of the frequency and duty-cycle of such strong variability, and the physics and dynamics of the phenomenon., Comment: 37 pages, 14 figures, accepted by ApJ 23-May-2022

We present the current state of models for the $z\sim3$ carbon monoxide (CO) line-intensity signal targeted by the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP) Pathfinder in the context of its early science results. Our fiducial model, relating dark matter halo properties to CO luminosities, informs parameter priors with empirical models of the galaxy-halo connection and previous CO(1-0) observations. The Pathfinder early science data spanning wavenumbers $k=0.051$-$0.62\,$Mpc$^{-1}$ represent the first direct 3D constraint on the clustering component of the CO(1-0) power spectrum. Our 95% upper limit on the redshift-space clustering amplitude $A_{\rm clust}\lesssim70\,\mu$K$^2$ greatly improves on the indirect upper limit of $420\,\mu$K$^2$ reported from the CO Power Spectrum Survey (COPSS) measurement at $k\sim1\,$Mpc$^{-1}$. The COMAP limit excludes a subset of models from previous literature, and constrains interpretation of the COPSS results, demonstrating the complementary nature of COMAP and interferometric CO surveys. We demonstrate the potential of line-intensity mapping to place constraints on the initial mass function (IMF) of Population III stars via measurements of the mean He II 1640A/H$\alpha$ line-intensity ratio. We extend the 21cmFAST code with modern high-redshift galaxy-formation and photoionization models, and estimate the line emission from Population II and Population III galaxies at redshifts $5 \le z \le 20$. In our models, mean ratio values of He II/H$\alpha \gtrsim 0.1$ indicate top-heavy Population III IMFs with stars of several hundred solar masses, reached at $z \gtrsim 10$ when Population III stars dominate star formation. A next-generation space mission with capabilities moderately superior to those of CDIM will be able to probe this scenario by measuring the He II and H$\alpha$ fluctuation power spectrum signals and their cross-correlation at high significance up to $z\sim 20$. Moreover, regardless of the IMF, a ratio value of He II/H$\alpha \lesssim 0.01$ indicates low Population III star formation and, therefore, it signals the end of the period dominated by this stellar population. However, a detection of the corresponding He II power spectrum may be only possible for top-heavy Population III IMFs or through cross-correlation with the stronger H$\alpha$ signal. Finally, ratio values of $0.01 \lesssim$ He II/H$\alpha$ $\lesssim 0.1$ are complex to interpret because they can be driven by several competing effects. We discuss how various measurements at different redshifts and the combination of the line-intensity ratio with other probes can assist in constraining the Population III IMF in this case., Comment: Updated to match the accepted ApJ version. We present a measurement of the relativistic corrections to the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect spectrum, the rSZ effect, toward the massive galaxy cluster RX J1347.5-1145 by combining sub-mm images from Herschel-SPIRE with mm-wave Bolocam maps. Our analysis simultaneously models the SZ effect signal, the population of cosmic infrared background (CIB) galaxies, and galactic cirrus dust emission in a manner that fully accounts for their spatial and frequency-dependent correlations. Gravitational lensing of background galaxies by RX J1347.5-1145 is included in our methodology based on a mass model derived from HST observations. Utilizing a set of realistic mock observations, we employ a forward modelling approach that accounts for the non-Gaussian covariances between observed astrophysical components to determine the posterior distribution of SZ effect brightness values consistent with the observed data. We determine a maximum a posteriori (MAP) value of the average Comptonization parameter of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) within R$_{2500}$ to be $\langle y \rangle_{2500} = 1.56 \times 10^{-4}$, with corresponding 68~per cent credible interval $[1.42,1.63] \times 10^{-4}$, and a MAP ICM electron temperature of $\langle \textrm{T}_{\textrm{sz}} \rangle_{2500} = 22.4$~keV with 68~per cent credible interval spanning $[10.4,33.0]$~keV. This is in good agreement with the pressure-weighted temperature obtained from {\it Chandra} X-ray observations, $\langle \textrm{T}_{\textrm{x,pw}}\rangle_{2500} = 17.4 \pm 2.3$~keV. We aim to apply this methodology to comparable existing data for a sample of 39 galaxy clusters, with an estimated uncertainty on the ensemble mean $\langle \textrm{T}_{\textrm{sz}} \rangle_{2500}$ at the $\simeq 1$~keV level, sufficiently precise to probe ICM physics and to inform X-ray temperature calibration., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Originally proposed as a cosmological probe of the large-scale structure, line intensity mapping (LIM) also offers a unique window into the astrophysics of galaxy evolution. Adding to the astrophysical explorations of LIM technique that have traditionally focused on small, non-linear scales, we present a novel method to study the global star formation law using forthcoming data from large-scale baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) intensity mapping. Using the amplitude of the percent-level but scale-dependent bias induced by baryon fraction fluctuations on BAO scales, we show that combining auto- and cross-correlation power spectra of two (or more) LIM signals allows to probe the star formation law power index $\mathcal{N}$. We examine the prospect for mapping H$\alpha$ and [OIII] lines across all scales, especially where imprints of the baryon fraction deviation exist, with space missions like SPHEREx. We show that although SPHEREx may only marginally probe $\mathcal{N}$ by accessing a modest number of large-scale modes in its 200 deg$^2$ deep survey, future infrared all-sky surveys reaching a comparable depth with an improved spectral resolution ($R \gtrsim 400$) are likely to constrain $\mathcal{N}$ to a precision of 10$-$30%, sufficient for distinguishing models with varying feedback assumptions, out to $z\sim4$ using BAO intensity mapping. Leveraging this effect, large, cosmic-variance-limited LIM surveys in the far future can scrutinize the physical connection between galaxy evolution and the large-scale cosmological environment, while performing stringent tests of the standard cosmological model., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We show the improvement to cosmological constraints from galaxy cluster surveys with the addition of CMB-cluster lensing data. We explore the cosmological implications of adding mass information from the 3.1$\sigma$ detection of gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by galaxy clusters to the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) selected galaxy cluster sample from the 2500 deg$^2$ SPT-SZ survey and targeted optical and X-ray followup data. In the $\Lambda$CDM model, the combination of the cluster sample with the Planck power spectrum measurements prefers $\sigma_8 \left(\Omega_m/0.3 \right)^{0.5} = 0.831 \pm 0.020$. Adding the cluster data reduces the uncertainty on this quantity by a factor of 1.4, which is unchanged whether or not the 3.1$\sigma$ CMB-cluster lensing measurement is included. We then forecast the impact of CMB-cluster lensing measurements with future cluster catalogs. Adding CMB-cluster lensing measurements to the SZ cluster catalog of the on-going SPT-3G survey is expected to improve the expected constraint on the dark energy equation of state $w$ by a factor of 1.3 to $\sigma(w) = 0.19$. We find the largest improvements from CMB-cluster lensing measurements to be for $\sigma_8$, where adding CMB-cluster lensing data to the cluster number counts reduces the expected uncertainty on $\sigma_8$ by factors of 2.4 and 3.6 for SPT-3G and CMB-S4 respectively., Comment: Comments are welcome

The existence of primordial black holes (PBHs), which may form from the collapse of matter overdensities shortly after the Big Bang, is still under debate. Among the potential signatures of PBHs are gravitational waves (GWs) emitted from binary black hole (BBH) mergers at redshifts $z\gtrsim 30$, where the formation of astrophysical black holes is unlikely. Future ground-based GW detectors, Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope, will be able to observe equal-mass BBH mergers with total mass of $\mathcal{O}(10-100)~M_{\odot}$ at such distances. In this work, we investigate whether the redshift measurement of a single BBH source can be precise enough to establish its primordial origin. We simulate BBHs of different masses, mass ratios and orbital orientations. We show that for BBHs with total masses between $20~M_{\odot}$ and $40~M_{\odot}$ merging at $z \geq 40$ one can infer $z>30$ at up to 97\% credibility, with a network of one Einstein Telescope, one 40-km Cosmic Explorer in the US and one 20-km Cosmic Explorer in Australia. A smaller network made of one Einstein Telescope and one 40-km Cosmic Explorer in the US measures $z>30$ at larger than 90\% credibility for roughly half of the sources than the larger network. We then assess the dependence of this result on the Bayesian redshift priors used for the analysis, specifically on the relative abundance of the BBH mergers originated from the first stars, and the primordial BBH mergers., 4.5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Ground-based gravitational-wave detectors like Cosmic Explorer (CE) can be tuned to improve their sensitivity at high or low frequencies by tuning the response of the signal extraction cavity. Enhanced sensitivity above 2 kHz enables measurements of the post-merger gravitational-wave spectrum from binary neutron star mergers, which depends critically on the unknown equation of state of hot, ultra-dense matter. Improved sensitivity below 500 Hz favors precision tests of extreme gravity with black hole ringdown signals and improves the detection prospects while facilitating an improved measurement of source properties for compact binary inspirals at cosmological distances. At intermediate frequencies, a more sensitive detector can better measure the tidal properties of neutron stars. We present and characterize the performance of tuned CE configurations that are designed to optimize detections across different astrophysical source populations. These tuning options give CE the flexibility to target a diverse set of science goals with the same detector infrastructure. We find that a 40 km CE detector outperforms a 20 km in all key science goals other than access to post-merger physics. This suggests that CE should include at least one 40 km facility.

We consider a mixed population of stars and BHs and the presence of a smooth dark matter component. We adopt reverberation mapping estimates of the quasar size. According to a Bayesian analysis of the measured microlensing magnifications, a population of BHs with masses similar to 30M (circle dot) constitutes less than 0.4% of the total matter at the 68% confidence level (less than 0.9% at the 90% confidence level). We have explored the whole mass range of LIGO/Virgo BHs, finding that this upper limit ranges from 0.5% to 0.4% at the 68% confidence level (from 1.1% to 0.9% at the 90% confidence level) when the BH masses change from 10 to 60M (circle dot). We estimate a 16% contribution from the stars, in agreement with previous studies based on a single-mass population that do not explicitly consider the presence of BHs. We show that quasar microlensing can be very sensitive to the mass of the lenses, and that it is able to distinguish between stars and BHs of high mass, when the finite size of the source is taken into account. A significant presence of massive BHs would produce frequent high-flux magnifications (except for unrealistically large sources), which have been very rarely observed. On the contrary, a typical stellar population would induce flux magnifications consistent with the observations. Using the novel semi-numerical code for reionization AMBER, we model the patchy kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect by directly specifying the reionization history with the redshift midpoint $z_\mathrm{mid}$, duration $\Delta_\mathrm{z}$, and asymmetry $A_\mathrm{z}$. We further control the ionizing sources and radiation through the minimum halo mass $M_\mathrm{h}$ and the radiation mean free path $\lambda_\mathrm{mfp}$. AMBER reproduces the free electron number density and the patchy kSZ power spectrum of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations at the target resolution ($1\,{\rm Mpc}/h$) with matched reionization parameters. With a suite of $(2\,{\rm Gpc}/h)^3$ simulations using AMBER, we first constrain the redshift midpoint $6.08$ is needed to ensure an end of reionization before $z=5.5$). We show that constraints on the asymmetry require $\sim 0.1\,\mu k^2$ measurement accuracy at multipoles other than $\ell=3000$. Finally, we find that the amplitude and shape of the kSZ spectrum are only weakly sensitive to $M_h$ under a fixed reionization history and radiation mean-free path., Comment: 20 pages, 17 Figures; comments welcome

In a novel approach employing implicit likelihood inference (ILI), also known as likelihood-free inference, we calibrate the parameters of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations against observations, which has previously been unfeasible due to the high computational cost of these simulations. For computational efficiency, we train neural networks as emulators on ~1000 cosmological simulations from the CAMELS project to estimate simulated observables, taking as input the cosmological and astrophysical parameters, and use these emulators as surrogates to the cosmological simulations. Using the cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD) and, separately, stellar mass functions (SMFs) at different redshifts, we perform ILI on selected cosmological and astrophysical parameters (Omega_m, sigma_8, stellar wind feedback, and kinetic black hole feedback) and obtain full 6-dimensional posterior distributions. In the performance test, the ILI from the emulated SFRD (SMFs) can recover the target observables with a relative error of 0.17% (0.4%). We find that degeneracies exist between the parameters inferred from the emulated SFRD, confirmed with new full cosmological simulations. We also find that the SMFs can break the degeneracy in the SFRD, which indicates that the SMFs provide complementary constraints for the parameters. Further, we find that the parameter combination inferred from an observationally-inferred SFRD reproduces the target observed SFRD very well, whereas, in the case of the SMFs, the inferred and observed SMFs show significant discrepancies that indicate potential limitations of the current galaxy formation modeling and calibration framework, and/or systematic differences and inconsistencies between observations of the stellar mass function., This is the revised version from the reviewer's report (submitted to ApJ)

The motion of cosmic strings in the universe leads to the generation of wakes behind them. We study magnetized wakes of cosmic strings moving in the post recombination plasma. We show that magnetic reconnection can occur in the post shock region. Since the width of the cosmic string wake is very small, the reconnection occurs over a very short lengthscale. The reconnection leads to a large amount of kinetic energy being released in the post shock region of the cosmic string wake. This enhances the kinetic energy released during the reconnection. We make a rudimentary estimate of the kinetic energy released by the magnetic reconnection in cosmic strings wakes and show that it can account for low energy Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) in the post recombination era., Comment: 11 pages 1 figure

We perform a rigorous cosmology analysis on simulated type Ia supernovae (SN~Ia) and evaluate the improvement from including photometric host-galaxy redshifts compared to using only the "zspec" subset with spectroscopic redshifts from the host or SN. We use the Deep Drilling Fields (~50 deg^2) from the Photometric LSST Astronomical Time-Series Classification Challenge (PLaSTiCC), in combination with a low-z sample based on Data Challenge2 (DC2). The analysis includes light curve fitting to standardize the SN brightness, a high-statistics simulation to obtain a bias-corrected Hubble diagram, a statistical+systematics covariance matrix including calibration and photo-z uncertainties, and cosmology fitting with a prior from the cosmic microwave background. Compared to using the zspec subset, including events with SN+host photo-z results in i) more precise distances for z>0.5, ii) a Hubble diagram that extends 0.3 further in redshift, and iii) a 50 % increase in the Dark Energy Task Force figure of merit (FoM) based on the w0-wa CDM model. Analyzing 25 simulated data samples, the average bias on w0 and wa is consistent with zero. The host photo-z systematic of 0.01 reduces FoM by only 2 % because i) most z, 13 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables. Submitted to ApJ

The cross-correlation between the 21 cm field and the galaxy distribution is a potential probe of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The 21 cm signal traces neutral gas in the intergalactic medium and, on large spatial scales, this should be anti-correlated with the high-redshift galaxy distribution which partly sources and tracks the ionized gas. In the near future, interferometers such as the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) are projected to provide extremely sensitive measurements of the 21 cm power spectrum. At the same time, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman) will produce the most extensive catalog to date of bright galaxies from the EoR. Using semi-numeric simulations of reionization, we explore the prospects for measuring the cross-power spectrum between the 21 cm and galaxy fields during the EoR. We forecast a 14$\sigma$ detection between HERA and Roman, assuming an overlapping survey area of 500 deg$^2$, redshift uncertainties of $\sigma_z = 0.01$ (as expected for the high-latitude spectroscopic survey of Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies), and an effective Ly$\alpha$ emitter duty cycle of $f_\mathrm{LAE} = 0.1$. Thus the HERA-Roman cross-power spectrum may be used to help verify 21 cm detections from HERA. We find that the shot-noise in the galaxy distribution is a limiting factor for detection, and so supplemental observations using Roman should prioritize deeper observations, rather than covering a wider field of view., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, accepted at ApJ

We identify the intrinsic dependence of star formation quenching on a variety of galactic and environmental parameters, utilizing a machine learning approach with Random Forest classification. We have previously demonstrated the power of this technique to isolate causality, not mere correlation, in complex astronomical data. First, we analyze three cosmological hydrodynamical simulations (Eagle, Illustris, and IllustrisTNG), selecting snapshots spanning the bulk of cosmic history from comic noon ($z \sim 2$) to the present epoch, with stellar masses in the range $9 < \log(M_*/M_{\odot}) < 12$. In the simulations, black hole mass is unanimously found to be the most predictive parameter of central galaxy quenching at all epochs. Perhaps surprisingly, black hole accretion rate (and hence the bolometric luminosity of active galactic nuclei, AGN) is found to be of little predictive power over quenching. This theoretical result is important for observational studies of galaxy quenching as it cautions against using the current AGN state of a galaxy as a useful proxy for the cumulative impact of AGN feedback on a galactic system. The latter is traced by black hole mass not AGN luminosity. Additionally, we explore a sub-set of 'observable' parameters, which can be readily measured in extant wide-field galaxy surveys targeting $z = 0 - 2$, at $9 < \log(M_*/M_{\odot}) < 12$. All three simulations predict that in lieu of black hole mass, the stellar gravitational potential will outperform the other parameters in predicting quenching. Observations have found black holes spanning ten orders of magnitude in mass across most of cosmic history. The Kerr black hole solution is however provisional as its behavior at infinity is incompatible with an expanding universe. Black hole models with realistic behavior at infinity predict that the gravitating mass of a black hole can increase with the expansion of the universe independently of accretion or mergers, in a manner that depends on the black hole's interior solution. With Cosmicflows-4, distances are compiled for 55,877 galaxies gathered into 38,065 groups. Eight methodologies are employed, with the largest numbers coming from the correlations between the photometric and kinematic properties of spiral galaxies (TF) and elliptical galaxies (FP). Supernovae that arise from degenerate progenitors (type Ia Sne) are an important overlapping component. Smaller contributions come from distance estimates from the surface brightness fluctuations of elliptical galaxies and the luminosities and expansion rates of core collapse supernovae (SNII). Cepheid period-luminosity relation and tip of the red giant branch observations founded on local stellar parallax measurements along with the geometric maser distance to NGC 4258 provide the absolute scaling of distances. The assembly of galaxies into groups is an important feature of the study in facilitating overlaps between methodologies. Merging between multiple contributions within a methodology and between methodologies is carried out with Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo procedures. The final assembly of distances is compatible with a value of the Hubble constant of $H_0=74.6$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ with the small statistical error of $\pm 0.8$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ but a large potential systematic error of ~3 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. Peculiar velocities can be inferred from the measured distances. Of the 11,416 sources studied in 3.75 hr of on-sky exposure time, 7438 are M31 sources with well-measured radial velocities. The observations reveal intricate coherent kinematic structure in the positions and velocities of individual stars: streams, wedges, and chevrons. While hints of coherent structures have been previously detected in M31, this is the first time they have been seen with such detail and clarity in a galaxy beyond the Milky Way. We find clear kinematic evidence for shell structures in the Giant Stellar Stream, the Northeast Shelf, and Western Shelf regions. The kinematics are remarkably similar to the predictions of dynamical models constructed to explain the spatial morphology of the inner halo. The results are consistent with the interpretation that much of the substructure in the inner halo of M31 is produced by a single galactic immigration event 1–2 Gyr ago. Significant numbers of metal-rich stars ([Fe/H] > − 0.5) are present in all of the detected substructures, suggesting that the immigrating galaxy had an extended star formation history. We also investigate the ability of the shells and Giant Stellar Stream to constrain the gravitational potential of M31, and estimate the mass within a projected radius of 125 kpc to be ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}\,{M}_{\mathrm{NFW}}(\lt 125\,\mathrm{kpc})/{M}_{\odot }={11.80}_{-0.10}^{+0.12}$. The Mg II 2796, 2803 doublet has been suggested to be a useful indirect indicator for the escape of Ly-alpha and Lyman continuum (LyC) photons in local star-forming galaxies. However, studies to date have focused on small samples of galaxies with strong Mg II or strong LyC emission. Here we present the first study of Mg II probing a large dynamic range of galaxy properties, using newly obtained high signal-to-noise, moderate-resolution spectra of Mg II for a sample of 34 galaxies selected from the Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey. We show that the galaxies in our sample have Mg II profiles ranging from strong emission to P-Cygni profiles, and to pure absorption. We find there is a significant trend (with a possibility of spurious correlations of ~ 2%) that galaxies detected as strong LyC Emitters (LCEs) also show larger equivalent widths of Mg II emission, and non-LCEs tend to show evidence of more scattering and absorption features in Mg II We then find Mg II strongly correlates with Ly-alpha in both equivalent width and escape fraction, regardless of whether the emission or absorption dominates the Mg II profiles. Furthermore, we present that, for galaxies categorized as Mg II emitters (MgE), one can adopt the information of Mg II, metallicity, and dust to estimate the escape fraction of LyC within a factor of 3. These findings confirm that Mg II lines can be used as a tool to select galaxies as LCEs and to serve as an indirect indicator for the escape of Ly-alpha and LyC., 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted to ApJ

Star-forming galaxies can exhibit strong morphological differences between the rest-frame far-UV and optical, reflecting inhomogeneities in star-formation and dust attenuation. We exploit deep, high resolution NIRCAM 7-band observations to take a first look at the morphology of galaxies in the epoch of reionization ($z>7$), and its variation in the rest-frame wavelength range between Lyman $\alpha$ and 6000-4000\AA, at $z=7-12$. We find no dramatic variations in morphology with wavelength -- of the kind that would have overturned anything we have learned from the Hubble Space Telescope. No significant trends between morphology and wavelengths are detected using standard quantitative morphology statistics. We detect signatures of mergers/interactions in 4/19 galaxies. Our results are consistent with a scenario in which Lyman Break galaxies -- observed when the universe is only 400-800 Myrs old - are growing via a combination of rapid galaxy-scale star formation supplemented by accretion of star forming clumps and interactions., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, ApJL in press
