Population level data on health of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are sorely needed to identify their health status, health disparities, and health needs. Key considerations to inform programs and policies need to address prevalence, problem identification, and progress assessment. Recent advances have been made in health data about people with disabilities generally that identify strategies for improving health data for people with IDD, including critical need for a standardized operational definition and survey identifiers of IDD. Past and current actions by federal agencies' to improve health data for health equity are summarized. Emerging developments in IDD health data are identified, including increasing use of self-report, data linking and harmonizing, intersectionality, and recognition of ableism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The number of postsecondary education (PSE) programs is increasing in the United States and worldwide with the goal of improving quality-of-life (QOL) outcomes for people with intellectual disability (ID). The current study explored if people with ID entering a residential college-based PSE program differed or were the same in their reported QOL outcomes as other young adults with ID. Findings indicate that soon-to-be college students responded similarly to national samples on a majority of QOL indicators. An important difference existed in paid employment; college-bound individuals responded more often that they had a paid job compared to respondents of the national surveys. Violence prevention approaches using social-ecological models inform interventions for people with intellectual disability, who often face barriers to accessing generalist courses. This study explores the experiences of healthcare professionals leading a prevention course specifically designed for adults with intellectual disability. Through semistructured interviews, 12 Norwegian course leaders highlighted the importance of raising awareness and comprehension about rights, and the social and individual factors influencing experiences of violence and its prevention. Challenges were encountered in tailoring the course to the diverse lived experiences of participants with disabilities and addressing ongoing support needs for their safety. Meaningful progress in improving employment outcomes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities continues to be elusive, despite 40 years of investment in research, policy, and supports. This article reviews the current state of employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and describes policy, practice, and individual factors that influence employment outcomes. Research suggests the need for a holistic approach to change that addresses systems-level strategy, policy, and fiscal investment while strengthening individual experiences with employment and related day services. Recommendations address strengthening the implementation of employment policy, developing pathways to employment, and engaging individuals with IDD and, in particular, individuals with diverse social characteristics in reflecting on the quality of their experiences and supports. Family members provide significant practical and emotional support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across the lifespan. In September 2022, the State of the Science Conference on Community Living: Engaging Persons With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities From Underserved Racial, Ethnic, Linguistic, and Cultural Groups in Research was held. This article summarizes the efforts of the workgroup that developed research goals related to supporting families of people with IDD. The focus was on families with intersectional identities and minoritized communities. Recommended areas of future research include exploratory research to better understand the experiences of these families, perspectives of families with intersectional identities about the formal support system, funding for family support and services, and inclusive research strategies. This conceptual methods article parallels remarks given at the 2022 American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities conference highlighting the importance of including the voices of people with intellectual disability in research processes. The purpose of this article was to put forth a call to action to disability researchers to advance, expect, and model inclusive research practices and consider this action as a form of scholarly activism and allyship toward the intellectual and developmental disabilities community. This conceptual article is organized to engage existing inclusive research literature and offers a method of inclusive research team design with practical suggestions for consideration. Peers have a prominent place within peer-mediated interventions (PMI). Understanding how they might benefit from their experiences supporting students with disabilities is an emerging area of much-needed research. This qualitative study was designed to identify the breadth of ways peers report being affected by their diverse experiences. We held eight focus groups with 41 secondary and postsecondary peers involved in PMIs alongside students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They described nine distinct areas of impact: social impact, personal growth, changes in views, rewarding impact, skill development, advocacy, future intentions, academic impact, and negative impact. This article examines two methodological issues regarding ways of obtaining and analyzing outcome data for people with intellectual disabilities: (a) self-report and proxy-report data and (b) analysis of population-based data sets. Some people with intellectual disabilities have difficulties with self-reporting due to problems of understanding and communication. However, there are serious doubts about the validity of proxy data for subjective issues. One important challenge with secondary analysis of population-based data sets is the difficulty of accurately identifying survey participants with intellectual disabilities. This study investigated attitudes toward people with intellectual disabilities among the general Hong Kong Chinese population and compared these to a White British sample, using the Community Living Attitudes Scale-Mental Retardation form (CLAS-MR; D. Henry, C. Keys, F. Balcazar, & D. Jopp, 1996). As predicted, attitudes among the Hong Kong Chinese public (n 149) were less favorable than the British sample (n 135). The former were less opposed to the exclusion of people with intellectual disabilities, less likely to view them as similar to themselves and more in favor of sheltering such individuals. Of all demographic variables examined, ethnicity was the strongest predictor of attitudes, although it only accounted for a small part of the variance in attitudes. The purpose of this study is to lay a foundation for illustrating the importance of longitudinal data collection by sharing the results of the Independent Monitoring for Quality (IM4Q) program in Pennsylvania designed to collect data over time on the quality of services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In this article, we report on the history and characteristics of the IM4Q program, describe the key variables of interest, and highlight the trends in the key variables over 3 years of data collection (2013, 2016, and 2019). The descriptive results indicate mixed trends for the three areas of focus: comparable rates of people employed in community-based settings, less support-related choice, and better everyday choice-making outcomes. Diagnostic overshadowing is a bias in which symptoms of a psychological disorder are falsely attributed to a known diagnosis of intellectual disability. This systematic review evaluated all research on diagnostic overshadowing conducted to date, including dissertations and peer-reviewed journal articles. In total, 25 studies were included in this review. Findings suggest diagnostic overshadowing may not be as ubiquitous as originally believed, with one third of included studies finding no overshadowing. The quality of the evidence was graded as "Low" using the LEGEND tool, with common issues including outdated studies, analogue methodologies, small sample sizes and convenience samples, and inappropriate conducting or reporting of statistical analyses. This article discusses adults with intellectual disabilities who live in community settings. The author notes that these adults often report of loneliness, isolation and lack of friendship, despite their community living environment. The article then offers a program that encourages a sense of community and friendship in a community setting with intellectually disabled adults. The program also encourages literacy through the establishment of a book club, providing a valuable life skill for the disabled people while fostering a sense of community.

Researchers established that inclusive postsecondary education programs are beneficial for students with and without disabilities. However, research regarding faculty perspectives of these programs and faculty-perceived benefits and challenges is limited. This qualitative study interviewed faculty members (n=8) at a university in the southeastern United States who included university students with an intellectual disability in their general courses. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of university faculty regarding the benefits and challenges of including students with intellectual disability in their courses, as well as gaining their recommendations for faculty members who may include students with ID in future courses. Key findings included higher levels of inclusivity, increased awareness of disability, increased engagement, and a focus on improving teaching skills. Challenges were identified in the areas of awareness, worrying about making mistakes, and practical concerns. Recommendations for future instructors included being prepared with strong pedagogy, having structured classroom management plans, and being provided the opportunity to meet students with ID prior to future inclusive courses. Social inclusion is associated with better health and quality of life. Community participation is essential to inclusion and is an established human right. However, people with intellectual disability experience limitations and challenges to their participation. This study examined difficulties older Irish adults had participating in community. A sample of 609 individuals was followed over a six-year period to explore rates of difficulty experienced and associated factors. The proportion reporting the difficulties measured increased over time. Aging was associated with increased difficulty participating in community but was just one of multiple factors. Contrary to policy, more adults with intellectual disability may face exclusion from community as they age. This study is among the first pre–post examinations to explore differences in subjective well-being, adaptive and maladaptive behavior, close relationships, community integration, family members' satisfaction with residential and community living settings, and family contact before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. Participants demonstrated better life satisfaction and adaptive behavior before COVID-19 than after COVID-19. Participants reported closer relationships with family members and peers before COVID-19 and closer relationships with staff members after COVID-19. The findings reveal mixed, although mostly negative, effects of the pandemic on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the community in Israel, in accord with extant comparative research. Although there has been increasing interest in and emphasis on helping individuals with an intellectual disability find employment, there remain questions about factors related to employment and needed supports. We surveyed 127 people with an intellectual disability from three counties in southwestern PA. Data analysis revealed 100% of those who discussed employment within the past year ended up working or searching for work. Additionally, those who worked or looked for work in the past year found employment desirable; 100% voiced wanting to work in the next 3 years. Despite this, our findings revealed that no one had spoken to over half of the participants about employment. Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) need support from direct support professionals (DSPs) to engage in a healthy lifestyle. However, literature shows DSPs feel insufficiently equipped to support a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop a theory-based program for DSPs to support physical activity and healthy nutrition for people with moderate to profound levels of ID, and to design its evaluation. The Intervention Mapping Protocol (IM) was followed to develop a theory-based program for DSPs. The program evaluation consists of process and feasibility evaluations. This study provided a theory-based program consisting of a training and education section with online and face-to-face components to support DSPs in promoting health for people with ID. Supporting the academic engagement of students with intellectual disability is a central focus of the inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) movement. In this study, we used focus group interviews to explore the views of 23 university faculty involved in teaching college students with intellectual disability in traditional courses. We asked faculty about their motivations for offering inclusive courses, how they were affected by the experience, and how they perceived classmates were impacted. Faculty discussed a range of factors that drew them to this inclusive teaching experience and highlighted multiple ways in which they and their students were positively impacted by the enrollment of students with intellectual disability. We offer recommendations for research and practice aimed at expanding and strengthening the academic experiences of college students with intellectual disability within IPSE programs. There is a need for meaningful inclusion of people with disabilities in faith communities beyond physical presence. Although it has been recommended that evidence-based practices be used to increase the meaningful participation of people with intellectual disability in faith communities, there is a lack of empirical studies. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of video modeling and the system of least prompts in teaching individuals with intellectual disability to participate in a community activity. The results indicated the intervention was effective in teaching the tasks in simulated situations and following acquisition, the behaviors generalized to the actual worship service or faith community setting. This study addresses the need to reinforce the reading learning of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in general education classrooms. A standardized way of assessing support needs in reading (SNr) from the teachers' perspective is proposed. The objectives were (i) to develop an instrument and evaluate its properties and (ii) to preliminarily assess the support needs in reading of students with IDD. Participants were 86 Chilean elementary school teachers who responded about the support needs of their own students. The instrument assesses three dimensions (i.e., representation, engagement, and action and expression). Analyses showed excellent preliminary evidence of validity and reliability. The formation of friendships is central to the college experience. Yet little is known about the relationships young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities form through their inclusive postsecondary education programs or maintain after graduation. We interviewed 12 current students and alumni about their social networks and their views regarding friendships. Participants shared their perspectives on the multiple meaning of friendship, the size and composition of their social networks, and the areas in which college has positively impacted their social lives. The purpose of this study was to examine how secondary students with severe disabilities (i.e., severe intellectual disability or autism, multiple disabilities) participate in extracurricular school clubs. Using a qualitative multiple case design, the experiences of three high school students were examined. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document reviews. A single-case inductive open-coding strategy was utilized across all data sources in which codes and categories emerged, and a final cross-case thematic evaluation was conducted. The cross-case thematic analysis resulted in the following four overarching themes: (a) going with the flow; (b) social obstacles: on the outside looking in; (c) supports provided: too much, too little, just right; and (d) safety in numbers. General educators are crucial players in efforts to support inclusive education for students with intellectual disability. In this systematic review, we examined the roles of general educators within interventions delivered and evaluated in their middle and high school classrooms. Among these 40 intervention studies, the involvement of general educators could be characterized as mixed and often minimal. Across studies, general educator involvement spanned six different areas: developing the intervention, arranging peer involvement, implementing intervention components, providing perspectives, collecting data, and delivering class instruction. The ways in which general educators have contributed to the delivery of interventions in their classrooms remains uneven. Inclusive sports have emerged as a potential tool for building social inclusion within diverse populations. The Special Olympics Unified Sports programs are an example of inclusion initiatives specific to students with intellectual disability and sports that can be reevaluated with new understandings of inclusion. This systematic mixed studies review aimed to capture athlete Unified Sports experiences and identify what athletes reported about their participation. The systematic review identified nine original studies conducted by six unrelated research groups. Results across the studies are synthesized and suggestions for future research are presented. Athletes in all nine studies reviewed reported positive experiences with Unified Sports leading to increased social inclusion and/or self-concepts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

College-based transition programs offer students with intellectual disability and autism (ID/A) the opportunity to navigate adult learning experiences with similar-aged peers, accessing college coursework and employment experiences while continuing to receive support from or coordinated by their local school system. The present study used data from college-based transition programs included in the Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disability (TPSID) model demonstration program to examine the composition of employment preparation activities including paid employment and the association with having paid employment upon exiting from the program. The findings suggest that college-based transition programs hold promise as a model for supporting the transition to paid employment for students with ID/A. The purpose of this study was to describe the extent to which students with intellectual disability participate in work-based learning experiences and determine whether student characteristics (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, grade level, and support needs) relate to student participation in these activities. An online questionnaire was emailed to high school special education teachers in four states who had a state-issued teaching license in intellectual disability. A total of 266 teachers completed the questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to answer the research questions. Students participated in a variety of work-based learning experiences, with more students participating in school experiences than community experiences. The majority of work experiences were in one of three career clusters: (a) hospitality and tourism; (b) business, management, and administration; or (c) general work skills. Amount of time spent in work experiences varied greatly, with students spending more time in school experiences than community experiences. Student support needs and grade level were related to participation in community experiences. Grade level was also related to the amount of time students spent in school and community experiences. Attending college can lead to many benefits including better outcomes in adult life for college graduates. This concept is applicable to all students, including students with intellectual disability who are attending institutions of higher education programs to refine social, academic, employment, and independent living skills. Similar to their typical peers, students with intellectual disability enrolled in postsecondary education programs endure levels of stress that result in the application of coping strategies necessary to navigate various social domains of college life, including romantic relationships, friendships, roommate relationships, and social media interactions. The present study utilizes survey and interview data to examine which coping strategies are used by college students with mild intellectual disability. When faced with stressful situations, almost one-third of study participants chose Planful Problem Solving as their first choice coping strategy in the Romantic domain, and almost half of respondents used it to deal with stressful situations related to Friendships. More than a third of college students with intellectual disability chose Confrontive Coping as their preferred strategy in the Roommate and Social Media domains. Findings are consistent with previous research, which suggests that young adults with intellectual disability use Problem-Focused strategies most frequently when dealing with stressful situations. College undergraduate students (N = 259), were given a measure of tolerance toward people with intellectual disability. Half of the sample was given a version that used the term mentally retarded, and half was given a version that used person with intellectual disability. Individuals receiving the version with mentally retarded had lower levels of tolerance on all four subscales of the instrument. They scored significantly higher on the subscales of Exclusion and Sheltering and significantly lower on the subscales of Empowerment and Similarities than their peers who received the version using the term person with intellectual disability. This observational cross-sectional study presents methods employed in designing and undertaking a suite of eight health assessments, purposely named The Health Fair, as part of Wave 2 (2014) of the Intellectual Disability Supplement to the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (IDS-TILDA) study. Overall, 604 persons of all levels of intellectual disability, aged 40 years and above and in different living circumstances, participated. The Health Fair process was mobile and overcame barriers such as communication challenges or access that people with intellectual disability face. This protocol could support researchers and practitioners in clinical practice to guide and improve the health assessment of people with intellectual disability to facilitate a better understanding of their health pathways and improve health care delivery and services. The passage of the Higher Education Opportunity Act in 2008 extended the expectation of previous legislation (the Education for All Handicapped Children Act and Individuals With Disabilities Education Act) regarding general education academic access for students with intellectual disability, from elementary to secondary and now through to postsecondary education. In light of this extension of academic access, the authors conducted a systematic research review of the studies that explored access to and progress in college academics for students with intellectual disability (ID) enrolled in inclusive postsecondary education (PSE) programs. Of the 43 studies that met criteria, between 1987 and 2017, less than half provided sufficient contextual information to confirm academically inclusive course attendance or participation. Findings and implications, regarding the lack of research exploring access to and progress in academically inclusive college course content for students with ID are discussed. Authors also discuss the need for consensus on academic expectations of students with ID enrolled in college courses and the timely use of compensatory technologies and strategies. This article expands on 10 critical actions within the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) and The Arc's 2018 joint position statement on the right of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to have a free and appropriate public education (FAPE): (a) zero reject; (b) nondiscriminatory and comprehensive eligibility evaluations and appropriate assessments; (c) high expectations and FAPE; (d) autonomy, self-determination, and decision-making supports; (e) inclusion and least restrictive environments (LRE); (f) safe and supportive education environments; (g) school choice; (h) family and student participation; (i) lifelong education, transition, and postsecondary education; and (j) system capacity development, funding, oversight, and accountability. Research findings documenting positive outcomes associated with implementing each area of action are described and relevant legal mandates and case law are discussed. For most students with intellectual disability (ID), education in the least restrictive environment has been determined to be separate special education classrooms. One means to promote greater participation in general education classrooms is for educators to identify and arrange individualized supports that students need to be successful. We conducted focus group interviews with 33 educators in 6 schools from 3 states to explore how they currently plan supports for their students, obtain their opinions on the usefulness of a systematic problem-solving process for supports planning, and gather their perspectives on resources, including the nature of technical assistance, that would be most helpful in planning individualized supports. Themes from the focus group interview transcripts were identified and recommendations for increasing educator competencies in planning and monitoring individualized supports for students with ID in general education classrooms are provided. The purpose of this study was to compare the relative effects of word reading and story component interventions in developing reading comprehension of narrative texts with four students with mild levels of intellectual disability. A multielement design was used in this study. The findings revealed that the story component intervention was more effective and efficient than the word reading intervention in developing students' reading comprehension of narrative texts, and also indicated that both interventions were significantly effective in enabling subjects to answer literal questions. Only the story component intervention was significantly effective related to inferential questions. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are disproportionately impacted by potentially traumatic experiences; however, organizations serving this population have lagged in their integration of trauma-informed care (TIC). Trauma-informed care is a systemwide response to the pervasiveness of trauma that frequently requires an organizational shift rooted in staff training. Using an online statewide survey, the present study examined beliefs and training among IDD service providers. Responses from 288 service providers suggested some alignment among beliefs and staff training content with TIC principles. Although the findings indicate a foundation for TIC, intentional efforts are needed for IDD agencies to fully embrace TIC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Limited research exists on special education teachers (SETs) of students with intellectual disability (ID), developmental delay (DD), and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), their intent to leave or stay in the teaching profession, and the working conditions impacting those decisions. Through an online survey, we investigated working conditions of SETs who teach students with ID, DD, and ASD and their career intent, with attention to teacher demographic characteristics. Our investigation (n = 564) found Black/African American, Asian, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander SETs of students with ID, DD, or ASD reported higher intent to leave, as well as male SETs, compared to White SETs. Other differences are reported between groups. Results emphasize a need to focus on ways to retain SETs from underrepresented groups. The COVID-19 pandemic has been hard for everyone. For the estimated seven and a half million people in the United States who live with intellectual disability (Residential Information Systems Project, 2020), it has been very hard. Lives have been disrupted by lost jobs, lack of access to friends/family, and challenges finding enough staff to provide supports and needed healthcare. Studies have shown that people with IDD are at a much greater risk of getting COVID-19 and dying from it (Cuypers et al., 2020; Gleason et al., 2021; Kaye, 2021; Landes, Turk, & Ervin, 2020; Nygren & Lulinski, 2020). Without question, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) struggled as the COVID-19 pandemic began and as it has continued. Too many were isolated from friends and family for far too long. Too many were lonely and bored. Too many have not received the support they have needed during the pandemic. Far too many were denied treatment and far too many have died. As a nation we must reflect on what has happened and listen to people with IDD and their families about their experiences. Case management (CM) is one of the most commonly used services by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), but little is known about the workers who provide CM. This study used a mixed methods approach to gain understanding of the CM workforce in one U.S. state. An online survey was completed by 35 IDD service directors (87.5% of directors in the state); and 113 CMs and CM supervisors participated in semistructured interviews and focus groups. Results indicated an annual crude separation rate of 28.2%, and participants often complained that turnover resulted in caseload sizes that prevented optimal outcomes for people with IDD. A limited applicant pool, duties focused on regulatory compliance, and inadequate wages were cited as major challenges for CMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Examining literature that tells us what people with intellectual disability (PWID) think and feel about their sexual lives may enable families and professionals to offer a more person-centered approach to education and support. Examining the voices of many individuals across several studies may provide more convincing evidence about the experiences of these individuals-turning a solo into a chorus. Thus, the purpose of this article is to describe the results of a metasynthesis of qualitative studies highlighting the voices of PWID with respect to relationships and sexuality. Combining the results of 16 qualitative studies, 271 participants with intellectual disability were interviewed individually or in focus groups about their feelings and experiences regarding intimate relationships. Studies were conducted across Europe, in Australia, China, and in the United States. A little more than half of the participants were male; ages ranged from 13 to 89. Results revealed two competing themes of control and desire. Participants across studies desired friendships and close interpersonal relationships, yet were restricted from developing these relationships by policies, program staff, and family members. This article presents the results of a study on the perspectives of stakeholders from mainstream and specialized sports settings on seven strategies that could boost the impact of sports on social inclusion of people with intellectual disability. These strategies are: 1) developing Unified Sports, 2) conducting activities to raise awareness, 3) providing training to coaches, 4) using shadows, 5) developing a peer-support structure, 6) having a resource person available when needed, and 7) facilitating engagement in nonplaying roles. The perspectives of 28 stakeholders regarding the advantages, disadvantages, and considerations for implementation of the different strategies were gathered in discussion groups. Findings could help diversify opportunities for athletes with intellectual disability and develop programs and policies that contribute to building inclusive communities through sports. Significant advancements resulting from various legislative and grant initiatives have resulted in increases in higher education programs enrolling students with intellectual disability (ID). Information about program practices in admissions, academic access, employment, campus housing, and extracurricular activities was gathered via a national survey and offered to the public via a searchable directory. The current study provides a descriptive analysis of these survey data, addressing demographic structure and costs, as well as domains of practice including academic access, career development and employment, campus engagement, and credential attainment in higher education programs for students with ID from a sample of 257 programs. This study explores the psychometric properties of Self-Determination Inventory: Student Report (SDI:SR) in students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and without disabilities in China. The paper-and-pencil version of SDI:SR Chinese Translation (SDI:SR Chinese) was used to explore self-determination across students with IDD (n = 245) and students without disabilities (n = 315) from 16 schools across six cities in China. We examined the factor structure of the measure, conducted analysis of measurement invariance, and compared the latent means across students with IDD and without disabilities. Findings suggest that the data fit a one-factor model better than a three-factor model. We found greater variability in self-determination among students with IDD than students without disabilities. We examined the use of residential services for people with intellectual disabilities in Finland from a regional perspective. Our aims were to investigate how service supply and need, as well as municipal factors, impact the use of residential services and to analyze whether the available information in registers and databases can be effectively utilized in studies of this kind. According to the model based on the register data, after age adjustment the most important factors determining service use were service supply, the prevalence of intellectual disabilities, the municipality's level of urbanization, the number of persons granted long-term care as a percentage of all care recipients, and the percentage of middle-class and managerial households in a given municipality. Every child has the right to an education, including children with disabilities. Research findings from across the globe have shown the benefits of inclusive education, and mandates for providing accessible, inclusive education can be found in national policies and international agreements as well. This article explores the perspectives of 11 international experts on the state of inclusive education in countries spanning 5 continents. Experts participated in a focus group discussion at Inclusion International's 17th Annual World Congress 2018 in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Participants shared multifaceted factors impacting inclusive educational practices. Based on their experiences, participants also discussed strategies that were deemed effective or ineffective depending on varied contextual elements. Higher education programs for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) offer opportunities to engage in college experiences including access to typical college courses. The purpose of the present study was to examine data from federally funded programs in order to describe and identify predictors of inclusive course enrollments. Data on 672 first-year students with IDD who enrolled in 3,233 inclusive college courses were analyzed. Significant predictors were the age of the student, whether the student attended a program that offered access to regular student advising or provided an official transcript, whether the student took any specialized courses, and whether the student had a paid job or participated in particular career development experiences. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a multicomponent mathematics intervention (modified schema-based instruction, video anchors, and goal setting with self-graphing) on mathematical problem-solving skills of secondary students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Three participants were taught to solve percent of change word problems, which involved calculating the discounted price of an item or activity after using a coupon and then determining whether they had enough money to make the purchase. Results of the multiple probe across participant design indicate a functional relation between the intervention and problem solving, and all participants were able to generalize skills from word problems to real-world stimuli (i.e., coupons, receipts, menus). This qualitative study examined the beliefs and experiences of special education teachers about inclusive education for secondary age students with severe disabilities and co-existing complex health care needs. Participants were 11 middle and high school special education teachers who collectively case managed 18 students. Data were collected via demographic questionnaires and online interviews, and analyzed using an inductive coding approach. Findings portray the roles of personnel who provide student supports, the types of supports personnel and students require to be successful, benefits experienced by students, and barriers to including students. Expertise among teachers of students with extensive support needs is not well understood, and beliefs about what constitutes quality education for this population vary widely. We discuss findings from prior research on teacher preparation in relation to high-leverage practices and expertise development for students with extensive support needs within the social contexts of schools. We identify four core practices of expert teachers for students with extensive support needs, and we theorize the progression from novice to expert for each core practice using Dreyfus's (2004) model of expertise. Progress in including students with the most significant cognitive disabilities in general education environments has been unquestionably slow during the past quarter century. Systematic approaches to identifying and arranging supports are needed to accelerate this outcome. This article describes a model that systems can use to build contexts that enhance human functioning and promote valued outcomes for individuals with intellectual disability (ID). Our premise is that that systems have a responsibility to build contexts that enhance human functioning and promote valued outcomes for people with ID, and that this obligation can be met through the use of contextual analysis to deliberately design and implement support strategies that are responsive to identified contextual factors. The model employs a 2-step process to identify context-based independent and intervening variables and align support strategies with identified context-based influencing factors, disability policy goals, and associated outcome domains. We propose a number of indicators that can be used to assess the quality of a system's responsiveness based on their implementation of the model. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
